As your hand rests upon the green pillar, you feel something pull at you. Your surroundings grow dark as you are pulled elsewhere.
You feel something moving beneath you. The air is pleasant and warm, complete with a brisk chill. Before you can open your eyes you feel something heavy clap your shoulder.
With a jolt you awaken, blinking and squinting at the bright light you find yourself facing. Loud laughter erupts from around you as the weight lifts from your shoulder, only to reappear as a quick slap on your back. "Haha! Fell asleep there, eh?" The hand belongs to someone made out of shadows smiling widely at you. They are riding upon a shadowy creature. You notice that you are on a similar beast.
Another beast and rider pulls up next to you on the other side. "Come on, it's not that far now. We'll be able to get this all sorted out soon." They nod forward, "See? It's already in sight."
You can make out a building in front of you. The building is decorated with figures that have been worn down by the passing of time, leaving them open to interpretation. The building itself looks as if it was carved out of the cliff-side it was built into. Or was it built against it? It's difficult to tell from here.
As you look around, you notice you are surrounded by a group of seven shadow-people, each one mounted upon a shadow beast. There is a sense of familiarity about them, then the memory teases itself free: all of you set out together, each unified in a single goal. There is something here, something that is hidden at the end of the map. Didn't you pay a pretty penny for that map? Or did you steal it? It's... it's a bit unclear, and hurts to think too much upon.
Your thoughts are shattered as a shout reverberates throughout the area. A dark arrow hisses out of the surroundings, lodging itself into the throat of the shadow-person beside you. You watch helplessly as they fall off their beast with a gurgle, clutching at their throat. "Take cover!" It didn't matter who shouted it; whether it was you or one of your six remaining companions, you now have something else to worry about.

Welcome to THE GAUNTLET. This island will act similar to an artifact quest in which you and your party will be presented with several prompts. Do not RP in this thread; please create a thread in this subforum with the title [ ISLE 2 ] The Gauntlet - *names of participants* and RP within that thread. This thread is more of a guideline as to what prompts you and your party will react to.
You can complete this island in a group consisting of 2-4 others (for a total of 5 players), or you can solo it. Regardless of your group size, you are also traveling with six NPC characters. These characters will be useful to you in that they can provide a wide variety of benefits. These characters are also shared amongst all of you.
If you have more than one character in the meta you may place them all within the same thread.
It is entirely up to you to decide how many NPC characters make it to the end. There is no magic number, as ensuring they all make it to the end provides a bonus just as much as sacrificing one or two or all of them will. There is no magic number or right or wrong answer.
In addition, you may give your shadow NPC companions names/personalities/etcetc. Just don't get too attached to them, as once they are lost they stay lost.
NPC Benefits
Depending on how many NPC companions you have with you, you can receive bonuses FOR THIS ISLAND ONLY. These bonuses are not cumulative; if I have only two NPCs I do NOT get to +2 to my dice total and the perk "desperation;" I only get the +2 perk.
Anyone caught cheating or with inaccurate NPC counts will be publicly shamed.
If you have the following number of NPCs with you at any given time on this island, here are your perks:
6 Characters: Add 6 to the TOTAL you roll in battle. Click the spoiler to see an example.
Let's say this is my artifact:
According to the card, in order to attack I need to roll two eight-sided dice then subtract six from the total. Let's say I roll 3 and a 7. 3+7=10. Normally I wold subtract six to find my damage, however with a full party of 6 NPC's I can add 6 to my total of 10, making it 16. Subtract 6, and my party dishes out a total of 10 damage. Not bad!
5 Characters: Add +50 to your HP total. So if you're at the max 80/80, it is now 130/130. This number is not doubled, and will drop if you lose an NPC. ie if you are at 110/130 HP and a group member sacrifices an NPC (below), then your HP caps at 80/80 the instant you lose an NPC.
4 Characters: Add 4 to the TOTAL you roll in battle. See the above spoiler for examples.
3 Characters: Add +30 to your HP total. So if you're at the max 80/80, it is now 130/130. This number is not doubled, and will drop if you lose an NPC. ie if you are at 110/130 HP and a group member sacrifices an NPC (below), then your HP caps at 80/80 the instant you lose an NPC.
2 Characters: Add 2 to the TOTAL you roll in battle.
1 Character: Determination - Add 10 to the TOTAL you roll in battle.
SACRIFICING: At any time on this island you can SACRIFICE an NPC to heal yourself any time, including in the middle of the trap rooms or in the middle of battle. Sacrificing an NPC restores the entire party to 100% HP.
If someone dies you can sacrifice an NPC to bring them back.
If you are SOLOING then upon your death an NPC will automatically sacrifice themselves for you and bring you back to 100% HP.
SHORTCUTTING: At any time in a room, you can SACRIFICE an NPC to bypass a room. So if you dislike the thought of having to roll for a prompt then you can bypass it. If you opt to bypass a battle, you also bypass the loot.
CONCERNING GAME OVER: If you run out of HP, you will not be able to continue in the Gauntlet. Should you hit 0 HP and you have no NPCs left, you cannot continue. Please return to the main ORP hub. Should there be time, you may try again in 1 hour.
If you are in a party, after a battle (unless otherwise noted) you will need to sacrifice an NPC in order to bring them back to life. Someone who is dead cannot proceed to the next part and must be resurrected.
At any time you may abandon the quest, even if you are in a group. Upon abandoning, you must wait 1 IRL hour in order to try again.
FAQ: Q: I'm in a group with multiple player characters. Where are they in the opening cutscene? Use your imagination and pretend they're in the background. This thread is written in the second person perspective and focuses on one character; tweak the prompt as needed to turn "you" into "you and your group" as needed.
Q: Am I a shadow-person still? Nope, you're in full color. Just your NPC companions are shadow.
Q: Can I sac all my NPCs ahead of time and go into this on hard mode? Why would you even -- sure. Why not?
Q: When does the retry cool-down start? As soon as you end the Gauntlet by beating the Guardian or by Game Over.
Q: Help, my group is inactive! What can I do? After one hour of inactivity you may try the Gauntlet again, however if you began acquiring loot in the now-inactive thread you may only continue to receive loot in that thread, regardless if you reach that point again in another thread or not.
Q: Can I use my weapon/prereg abilities here? You can use these abilities at any time.
You dismount off your shadow-beast and run, taking cover. There must be several hiding, watching with bows drawn and arrows notched for any of your party to reveal themselves. You can hear the determined stomp and crash as others still search for your group on foot.
Your companion who was shot earlier is still there in the middle of the road. As you watch, they slowly begin to fade away. There was no time to pull them aside, to offer them last rights. And to be truthful, there are more pressing matters on your mind. You need to get out of there.
Your group can either fight them directly or sneak around. Should you have multiple player-characters in your group, you may choose different options.
The OOC
Please make your choice, then click the spoiler to see what happens next and for instruction on what to do.

When the enemy is defeated and everyone's mobs have been defeated proceed to the next part.
SNEAK
You and your party opts to instead try and use your surroundings to your advantage. If you are successful, it will be easier to engage the enemy. If you are spotted, it will become more difficult to defeat them.
In order to determine your success, please roll 1d6 (one 6-sided dice) and match your result to the following: You've been spotted! The enemy is aware of your plans and they're hitting you harder until you can lose them again. You are now engaged in combat. Please click "stand and fight" for the mob's HP and information, however for the first three combat turns, YOU take an automatic 8 damage per move you make, then at the fourth turn switch to 5 damage.
This is also the "ALERTED KNIGHT." This mob is separate than the other mobs that may be up and has 30/30 HP. If another person rolls the same result, please add 15 to its HP to represent a second one.
ie Bob, Sue, and Jack are in a group. Bob fights the Insanity Knight. Sue unsuccessfully sneaks and spawns the Alerted Knight. By the time Jack can post, Bob has killed his knight and is helping Sue with her's at 17/30. However, Jack bungles his roll. The Alerted Knight is now at 32/45 HP.
You've been spotted! The enemy has engaged in evasive maneuvers of their own. You are now engaged in combat. For the first three combat rounds, raise your attack modifier by -5. ie if you normally subtract 6 to determine your damage, you will now subtract 11. When the fourth round of combat comes around, you may switch back to your normal modifier. Please use the following to keep track of your posts:
You are now fighting the "EVASIVE KNIGHT." Please follow the guidelines for the Insanity Knight above, however the Evasive Knight has 40/40 HP. If another person rolls the same result, please add 20 to its HP to represent a second one. Please see the "Alert Knight" for an example.
You've been spotted! Both you and your enemy attempt to engage in evasive maneuvers. You are now engaged in combat. No adjustments to auto damage or modifiers.
You have spawned an "Insanity Knight." Please scroll up and use the Insanity Knight template. If another person rolls the same result, please add 25 to its HP to represent a second one. Please see the "Alert Knight" for an example.
You see an opportunity to strike and you take it! CRITICAL HIT! . Please scroll up and use the template from "Insanity Knight," however their HP is now 10/30. If another person rolls the same result, please add 10 to its HP to represent a second one. Please see the "Alert Knight" for an example.
Sneaking is child's play. You manage to sneak around. If no knights are up, move to the next area. If a knight is alive, you launch a sneak attack and critically hit it for 20 HP damage.
They never saw you coming. If no knights are up, move to the next area. If a knight is alive, you take them out in an instant effortlessly.
- Sneak loot tables are shared by "Fight" loot tables. - If you sneak attack/assassinate the knight you get loot. - If you sneak around and encounter NO combat then you earn this:

THE GAUNTLET - PART 2 With the enemies taken care of, you now proceed into the building itself. There is a fountain inside. You and your party use it to quench your thirst and wash off the dust from battle. You are now at full HP.
After you gather your party and journey forth, you are greeted by a narrow hallway. It looks like a plain, ordinary hallway with slits and holes in the wall. One of your companions knees down and picks a pebble off the floor before tossing it in. With a mechanical roar the hallway springs to life as saws, spears, arrows, and all matter of traps rush out to eliminate the intruder.
You search for a way around it. There isn't one.
THE OOC
Welcome to part 2 - The Trapped Hallway. To get passed this, you will need to roll 6d8, or six 8-sided dice. Each dice represents a trap, and your ability to bypass them. If you roll odd you take 5 damage. If you roll even you are not harmed.
You are free to create whatever sort of traps your devious mind can create, however please keep them medieval. No lasers or guns or explosives please! The encouragement/taunting of any teammates is encouraged.
Don't forget you can also sacrifice an NPC to bypass this room. Sacrificing an NPC to bypass counts for the entire party, as we're going to assume you send the poor sap forward to disable the traps only to lose them tragically in the process.
There is no chance to rest and recuperate. While bearing the injuries (if any) from the hallway, you and what remains of your party look out over the next room. It is a wide room filled with many tiles, each bearing a different picture. Like before, one of your companions scoops a rock off the floor and throws it out. It clatters and lands upon a tile, whereupon it is obliterated by a pillar of fire.
You sigh, taking comfort in the fact that whatever lies at the very end of this dungeon will be well-worth it considering how much trouble someone went through to put all these deadly traps in place.
Quote:
Welcome to part 3 - Deathsweeper Mystic Tiles. Depending on which tile you step on, you may suffer or partake in a beneficial consequence. Please roll 5d10 (five 10-sided dice) and match the effect to your roll. For ease of convenience, please place the following in your post:

THE GAUNTLET - PART 4
At last you and your companions (if any) have reached the end. The room is circular and filled with many shelves, each one containing many different kinds of goblets. There is a fountain in the middle of the room. Something tells you that you must take a goblet and drink from it. You take a step into the room, only to be stop as a shadowy javelin plants itself in the ground in front of you. Had the thrower put a bit more force into it, there's no doubt that it would have passed through you, pinning you to the ground through your midsection.
The room shakes, the treasures on the shelves rattling with each step as the Guardian strides into the light. Their head is held high, and they are already armed with another javelin to throw at you.
"HALT. YOU SHALL NOT PASS."

gaia_crownCHALLENGED THE BOSS WHEN IT WAS AT 150/150? Take -50 HP off. All participants in the 150/150 battle may roll 3d6 for loot.
If you already beat him at 150/150, take an extra piece of loot.
aka IF AT ANY POINT you fought the boss at 150/150 before 6:10pm PST 8/20/2013 you may take a total of three pieces of loot regardless of who landed the killing blow.
IF YOU SKIPPED THE BOSS: You may keep your blessing.
With the Guardian taken care of, you are now free to examine the shelves before you. You have made it, you are now at the chamber that holds the treasure you were after: the Grail.
As you study the shelves, you notice with growing dismay that there are many grails in varying shapes, sizes, colors, and materials. It will be a mighty task to narrow down the ideal one, the one and only Grail.
Your memory asserts itself; you can hear ---'s voice. They had told you that in order to reclaim part of what you lost you would need to drink from the Grail. "But be warned,"They cautioned, "For should you choose wrong your true self will be lost to you, and you will live a lie. Go forth with a strong heart with the shades of my dearest Companions. They will lead you to your heart's desire."
It's now or never. Will you choose to drink or will you refrain from drinking?
THE OOC
You have reached the end of the Gauntlet! Should you choose to NOT drink, your task ends here.
Should you, instead, choose to drink let's stop for a moment.
DO YOU HAVE ALL 6 SHADOW-COMPANION NPCS?
Your shadow-companions will give you the goblet you desire. You may choose ANY of the prompts below and drink from that goblet.
If you have 5 or less shadow-companions (or none at all), then please roll 1d6, and find out what happens to you when you drink in the next post.

You raise your chosen grail to your lips and...
...you have chosen wisely. As the cool liquid courses down your throat you feel something seem to shift and change within you. Something you've lost has been returned to you. You regain an ability based off of your character's faction:
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a STUDENT: you may now turn into your character's natural form. Weapon effects and dice carry over. If your character does not have a natural form, then you instead may CREATE a natural form based off of the weapon your character has equipped. This form will be made out of Insanity, so your character will be mainly greys! Otherwise those with natural forms get them as-is without Insanity. Reapers may summon their familiar/weapon, however they cannot shift into an Insanity-weapon-beast if they choose this option!
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a HUNTER: you regain your hunter's weapon, ie your hunter can hear them again. Your Weapon's form then overrides the appearance of your Insanity-weapon, however stats/abilities will remain the same. (ie, Aria is equipped with Desperation, however with this she now wields Symphony her flamethrower and burns things instead of punching them with 2d10-8 ) Your Weapon will share your Hunter's memories, however the clarity they will remember them is on par with a dream: ie did that really happen? I could've sworn you did x and y and -- wait that's real? Stop pulling my leg.
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a HORSEMAN: your currently equipped Weapon takes on the form of your character's actual weapon. In addition, you may also summon your character's mount. There is no time penalty, so yes you could keep your character's butt on their pretty pony while looking down on all the other characters for the rest of the meta if you wanted to.
...you have chosen something spiked. The liquid is warm with an unexpected flavor that reminds you of a pumpkin. You feel different. Your character now believes they are a member of the Halloween Faction. All memories gained to this point and acquired later are now tweaked to support this theory.
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a STUDENT: Your character's race is now different! Please choose one of the four Halloween races that is not your character's (ie I have an Undead student, I can choose between Demon, Monster, Ghost, or Reaper. Please see the specie guides in World Information for subrace ideas). Your character now takes on traits/aspects of that race. These traits are shadowy overlays. These traits do not give you natural abilities (ie wings won't let you fly).
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a HUNTER or HORSEMAN: You are now a member of Halloween! Please choose a race and a subrace. Your character now believes they are this species for the rest of the meta until further notice. Your character also takes on the traits of the creature you selected, and these traits are shadowy overlays. ie, if your character believes they are a dragon they now will have shadowy horns/wings/tail/etc.
...you have chosen dangerously. The liquid is cold and refreshing, and you feel yourself focus. You feel different. Your character now believes they are a member of the Deus Ex. All memories gained to this point and acquired later are now tweaked to support this theory.
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a STUDENT or HORSEMAN: Please choose a division from Deus Ex (more info here). Your character now gains a shadow coat with the division emblem glowing in their former core's color on the back. In addition, you may fabricate/hallucinate a Weapon personality (more info here). Their currently equipped weapon however does NOT change.
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a HUNTER: Your character's division is now different! Please choose one of the four Divisions that is not your character's (ie I have a Mist hunter, I can choose between Sun, Moon, Life, or Death.) Your character now gains a shadow coat with the division emblem glowing in their former core's color on the back. In addition, you may fabricate/hallucinate a Weapon personality (more info here). This weapon personality is NOT their normal Weapon; please create a new one. Their currently equipped weapon however does NOT change.
...you have chosen apocalypticly. The liquid has a heavy weight to it, deep and foreboding. You feel different. Your character now believes they are a member of the Lost Clan, aka they believe they are a Horseman. All memories gained to this point and acquired later are now tweaked to support this theory.
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a STUDENT or HUNTER: Please choose a Horseman Clan (more info here). Your character now gains shadowy traits reflective of that clan, ie new Conquest-delusionists now sport shadowy robes with bling embellished in the color of their core-Heart from part 1. You can now also summon and ride a horse based off of the clan you chosen: xxxxx ► Conquest: - Light grey shadowy Insanity-horse with a white core. xxxxx ► Famine: - Dark grey shadowy Insanity-horse with a yellow core. xxxxx ► War: - Grey shadowy Insanity-horse with a red code. xxxxx ► Death: - Very light, very transparent shadowy Insanity-horse with a black core.
xxxgaia_diamond If you are a HORSEMAN: Your character now believes they are part of a different clan. Please choose one of the three Clans that your character is not a member of (ie I have a War horseman, I can choose between Conquest, Death, or Famine). Your character now takes on shadowy traits of that clan new Conquest-delusionists now sport shadowy robes with bling embellished in the color of their core-Heart from part 1. You can also summon a horse to ride. This horse looks different based off of the clan chosen: xxxxx ► Conquest: - Light grey shadowy Insanity-horse with a white core. xxxxx ► Famine: - Dark grey shadowy Insanity-horse with a yellow core. xxxxx ► War: - Grey shadowy Insanity-horse with a red code. xxxxx ► Death: - Very light, very transparent shadowy Insanity-horse with a black core.
...you have chosen fantastically. The liquid fizzles and pops as you drink it, filling you with something you've never had. You feel different. Your character now believes they are a magic girl/boy, an ordinary human who can turn into an extraordinary magical alter-ego that can't be recognized. All memories gained to this point and acquired later are now tweaked to support this theory.
xxxgaia_diamondCHARACTERS FROM ALL FACTIONS now believe they are human. Your friends were your comrades, and together you formed a magical unstoppable force. By shouting your magic spell you turn into your magic form, gaining a new outfit and skills. Your character will take on shadowy aspects of what your character's magical form looks like, ie they could wear a modified school uniform/body suit/spandex/etc etc. While your magical abilities may not work exactly as they did before, at least you have a nifty weapon to aid you in their stead. Now, on to save the world!
...you have chosen something unreal. The smooth liquid glides down your throat, giving you an involuntary shudder. You feel different. Your character believes they were 100% human. all memories gained to this point and acquired later are now tweaked to support this theory.
xxxgaia_diamondCHARACTERS FROM ALL FACTIONS now believe they are human. They are an actor portraying your character for a hit TV series/web show/children's action show/drama/etc, and... this is all a delusion, right? This can't be real. Or maybe they're still filming. Regardless of what happened, they're here and now and they're sticking to the script. Your character does not gain any traits, as they are convinced makeup did a really, really good job making them look like their character. You can choose to RP your human's persona (ie give them a "real" name and have them have human reactions) or pretend they're sticking to their character as best as they can (that is RP someone trying to RP/act like your character). Sadly as a human, you gain no abilities or shadowy bits; your character is now an actor posing as your character.
The OOC
Stumped with these "rewards"? Essentially the Grail is giving back your memory of what it meant to be YOU. Namely, you remember how to use your abilities.
However, if you select the wrong grail (2-6), then you get to create FABRICATED MEMORIES. Your character is 100% convinced that they are whatever prompt you rolled for them; your character's memories have been tweaked to reflect this. ie, if you rolled #3 and had a Student character, your Student's acceptance to Amityville would be their acceptance to Deus Ex. Their best friend may be their comrade on Deus Ex, or even their rival on Halloween-side.
So long as you guys stick to the main "thing" of the prompt, you guys have as much flexibility with this as you'd like. If you're stumped, try reaching out to players that RP in that faction for ideas/advice/plots! We admin are here too, but asking players familiar with a particular faction would result in a much faster answer.
I rolled the horsemen prompt. Why am I stuck with a horse and not a different mount? Because Grail budget busted and all you get are ponies. Please stick to ponies; only Horsemen characters who rolled a 1 can use their non-horse mounts.
Can I choose to not drink from a grail? Certainly.
How long is my character this delusional? Until a GM announcement otherwise, please assume this status effect persists until the end of the meta.
I really don't like the Grail prompt I rolled and I can't think of how to play it! HALP! Good news! You may redo the Gauntlet. After your first run you need to wait 1 IRL HOUR before you can retry the Gauntlet. Keep in mind that you can only get loot ONCE. So if you redo the Gauntlet and the first run you stand and fight then successfully sneak the second time, you cannot get loot because you already claimed it!
Upon completing the Gauntlet for the first time AND UPON DEFEATING THE GUARDIAN BOSS, you also receive:
Please add this to your Heart Log as a blessing! Make sure you RP drinking your grail and log the effects of your drink in your heart log so you can refer to it later! Your characters abilities are based off of what you drink!
Don't like what you rolled? Should time permit, you may retry this task to get a different Grail. However, you cannot gain loot. In addition you must wait one IRL hour between attempts.
Due to an unforeseen exploit, you may no longer sacrifice an NPC in order to skip a room. With the sac-skip the Gauntlet became a cakewalk and not the grueling trials as intended. D: You can still sac an NPC for a free 100% HP refill any time during the task though!
You may sacrifice an NPC to skip a room a maximum of three times.

GUARDIAN BOSS UPDATES:
gaia_crownHP BUFF: The Guardian's HP has been raised to 150/150 HP.
gaia_crownSAC-SKIPPING: I realize that the thread is misleading, as when writing the Gauntlet I considered the grail status effects and blessing to be part of the Guardian's loot. As such, if you have skipped the boss and claimed loot, you no longer have the Blessing of the Grail. Please remove it from your Heart Journal.
Those that have skipped the boss and claimed loot will also be resummoned to their threads.
REMEMBER: IN ORDER TO CLAIM LOOT YOU MUST FILL OUT ALL POSTS WITH RP.
One-worded reserve posts or gifs do not count. Again, if you claim loot without putting RP in your post your Blessing will be stripped from you and you will receive public shaming.
THESE CHANGES GO INTO EFFECT FROM HERE ON OUT! If you are in the middle of a Gauntlet run and you have not faced the boss yet please adhere to these rules. If you have faced and DEFEATED the boss without skipping don't worry about this. If you are in the middle of the boss, just continue onwards. You must have been in the middle prior to this effect going live.
As always please post any questions about the Gauntlet here thank you~

THE GAUNTLET HAS BEEN UPDATED
gaia_crown There is no limit to how many rooms you can skip.
gaia_crown You can sacrifice an NPC at any time, even in the middle of trap/combat to restore yourself to 100% HP.
gaia_crown Sacrificing an NPC to restore health will restore the person who performed the sacrifice to 100% HP.
gaia_crown If you are soloing the Gauntlet and you die, an NPC will now automatically sacrifice themselves to bring you back to life.
gaia_crown The Guardian boss' HP has been nerfed to 100/100. If you fought the boss at 150/150 at any time (timestamp must be made before 6:10 pm on 8/20), you may collect 3 pieces of loot regardless of whether or not you landed the killing blow.
gaia_crown If you are in combat with the Guardian, remove 50 HP from it. If it dies, see the above.
gaia_crown You can only receive the Blessing of the Grail if you defeat the Guardian in combat.
gaia_crown If you skipped fighting the boss, you may keep your status effect and blessing.
