[ Task Two ]

I-it's cold...

That's really all Zanna can process as she opens her eyes, on a bed that fields as hard as the ice she felt in her body. It was firm, metallic, and she pressed her hand to it, immediately drawing her hand away as she realized she did not at all like the sensation. It's so bright that it hurts, and Zanna brought her hands up to cover her eyes almost instantly, shutting them tightly and opening them again as she attempted to get used to the blaring spotlight she couldn't understand. What was she doing here?

When had she fallen asleep?

It was hard to stand, and she felt herself stumble, but she needed to get out of here before she was very literally blinded in this room of white and light and it was all too much, it hummed in her head, and-- oh good, the door was unlocked, perhaps she could escape but -- it was only as equally bright out there, and going outside did not help terribly much. A small whine escaped Zanna Kosa's throat, eyes darting behind her in hopes that maybe there wouldn't be anymore light back there, but instead, she heard a door slam.

Zanna jumped, before squinting at the door, attempting to understand why the door still appeared to be open. There was nothing there, but yet she heard a slam. Where had that come from? Eyes darted from left to right, lightly gnawing on her lip as she attempted to figure out what had happened.

It didn't matter, did it? She needed to leave. This place was stifling.

Up ahead of her, if she squinted enough, she could make out the way out. That was where she wanted to go. Zanna picked up her pace, letting her legs carry her down the hallway as she tried to get her way out of this location. She was startled by a thud, and she turned around, attempting to make out if there was anything behind her. There was nothing still. But yet, when she turned her head around to attempt advancing again, it came again, feeling louder this time, and startling her once again.

This felt like a nightmare. It had to be a nightmare.

When she turned around, she saw it.

Whatever it was.

It was approaching, and she had to run. Without another thought, though with a rather loud screech, Zanna bolted, a panic setting into her bones that she didn't quite understand. She didn't want to fight this. She needed to leave. She needed to get out of here! This door had to let her out! She had to escape! There had to be an exit, there just had to be, and -- no, no, no, it was locked!

What was she going to do?!

If the door wasn't going to budge, she desperately needed another solution ... and fast, before that thing caught up to her. Her blue heart felt like it was lodged in her throat, but she couldn't let herself freeze up now. She had to leave. She had to get out of that door and get out of there before it was too late for her and whatever this was got her and did what it wanted and she was terrified and what was that on the ground anyway--?!

Zanna picked up the piece of paper, attempting not to panic. She had to get out of there, why was she reading a piece of paper? What did this piece of paper even mean?! A was ... 0, what? She guessed it sounded like a simple cypher of sorts but how could she decipher anything if there was nothing in the first place to ... decipher?! What was this for? Was that what it was for?! Zanna had no idea.

All she knew was that it felt like the other was getting closer and closer, her heart beating fast as she fidgeted in her own panic. What was she going to do?! How did this nonsense help?! Whose idea was it to put her to sleep in a room full of creepy shadows!

Hanging on to the piece of paper for now, Zanna scrambled to find something else of use.

"Ow!"

In a fit of panic, Zanna managed to stumble over herself and trip, falling forward and into the door, which didn't at all budge. She cried out in frustration, glancing down at the piece of paper again and then back at the door. Maybe the door would budge if she hit it hard enough, because it wasn't like she was going to get anywhere with this stupid useless piece of paper.

With a scream, Zanna threw her body into the door, attempting to get the damn thing to just pop open and let her flee. When she found that to be useless--indeed, the door didn't budge--she heard the thud again, and then a voice.

The voice sounded close. Too close. She had to get out of here.

"You're going to die, trapped, just like the others~"

What did that even mean?! Zanna glared behind her, throwing herself against the door again. Was she not the only person this horrible thing had done this to? Whatever. It didn't really matter. Nothing mattered, did it? The only thing that Zanna cared about was getting right out of this horrible room before something else happened. She needed to end it. She needed to get out of here right the hell now!

Zanna screamed as she hopelessly slammed against the door again. Why wouldn't it budge? Why couldn't she see a way out? There had to be something around here, but all she could find was that useless piece of paper and the damned door that wouldn't even budge no matter how hard she shoved on it. The door didn't even partially open, not even enough for her to try and jam that piece of paper in there. She didn't want to die in here. She really didn't want to die in here!

"Remember how you weren't there? So comical!~"

She could do without that damnable taunting, too. Zanna glared over her should once more, only to freeze when she realized how much closer the shadow seemed to have gotten. She needed to get out of there right now, before it became too late for her...

Zanna was looking around so rapidly that she barely noticed the fact that her vision fuzzed--it already had seemed blurred from the tears that were starting to well in her eyes from the fear she was feeling in her heart.

But then it hit her like a ton of bricks.

She didn't recognize the person she saw, but she felt drawn to them, arms reaching out in an attempt to grasp them. It felt like it was successful, but only in her mind, gathering the other person in a desperate hug of happiness to see them once again, a warmth that distracted her from the scene that was falling apart as every moment ticked by.

But her enthusiasm was not met with equal enthusiasm, and the person stepped back, leaving Zanna with arms empty and a sudden chill in her heart. There was a murmur she couldn't quite make out, and a glare that cut so deep it almost made her cry on its own. "I- I didn't mean to --" Zanna found herself stumbling words out, attempting to beg for forgiveness, but the other figure turned their back to her, refusing to face her.

"You may have not meant it, but you certainly did it."

"You did it!~" The sing-song voice that was even closer than it had been broke her from the illusion, and Zanna was brought back to the reality of the room too bright with the door still all too locked. With another scream, Zanna attempted, once again, to find what she was looking for, ignoring the sudden pain in her head.

The pain seemed to only increase by the moment, her vision swirling again as she saw yet another flash of what seemed to be greener pastures, a place she could go that was still bright though not nearly as bright, though the cold snow that reflected off the ground was something of a mirror--

"Perhaps we should go elsewhere?"

Zanna felt the giggles escape from her lips, eyes lighting up as, for the moment, her reality was forgotten, replaced with a rather pleasant thought. Together, alone? That sounded absolutely exciting, though she wasn't completely positive why it was. Her feet carried her behind him, though when he stopped, she stopped, looking up and offering a small frown.

"What's wrong?"

He looked back at her, head slightly inclined down, in a rather thin line. "Don't you ever come up with your own suggestions?"

The response confused her, and Zanna opened her mouth to respond, but just like that, the world melted back into where she was, and she heard the braying of that awful shadow again. Desperately, she attempted to yank the handle off.

To no prevail.

Of course the damn door didn't open.

Why did she even bother?!

The damn thing was getting closer and closer, and it was hopeless. She was done. Yanking on the door did nothing, pushing on the door did nothing, and all she had was this damn piece of paper to show for any of her efforts ... and a bunch of confusing words!

Zanna usually didn't get so frustrated, but her blood was running high. She had to leave. She was needed for something, perhaps even by the goddesses, and nothing would let her fail another ... not even this.

She ... wasn't ... going ... to ... let ... this ... thing ... win!

Maybe her shoulder was really starting to hurt ... like... really starting to hurt, but Zanna didn't care. She couldn't find any other solution. Perhaps it was the definition of insanity to keep trying the same thing while expecting some sort of different result--she had well established the door was not going to budge by this point--but there was little else she could do. If she saw no other solution, she had to attempt to get out of here somehow. She had to.

Even if that meant turning her elbow an even darker shadowy color than it had started at.

What the--?

Was that another piece of paper?

With the same thing on it?!

Zanna swore that the Goddess of Ruin was mocking her somewhere, but in the end, it didn't matter. The shadow was already upon her, and none of her struggling was able to remove it from her. She was done. She was done and she knew it, too. That was, perhaps, part of what made it so painful as she looked up at the shadow, not even caring what it was telling her. It only hurt for a moment. Of course it only hurt for a moment. That was what they all --

It was white hot pain. It ripped through her body, and she felt it from her head to her toes. She wanted to scream, but it didn't come out. She wanted to struggle to end it, but she couldn't move. She was done.

The second snip happened, and then the pain disappeared with it.

And in that moment, she saw them wander off with her heart.

[ Task One ]

Cautiously, Zanna approached the shrine. It looked the same as it ever had, with the exception of one thing ... one of the goddesses was oddly missing. She blinked, tilting her head, before wandering just a bit closer. Had something changed? Why were only two of the goddesses present?

The words caught her eye as she examined the plaque.

The Goddess, wrought with Paranoia, created ====, her last and final project before ====. It was then that she discovered how to replicate ====.

What were those words? Zanna leaned in closer, as if it would allow her to finally make them out, but at no prevail. What had she done? What had she replicated? What--

Her ponderings were interrupted by the Goddess' voice behind her. Nearly jolting to attention, Zanna whipped around and looked to the Goddess, eyes wide. She couldn't stare at a Goddess like this! Fidgeting, she straightened herself out, brushed herself out, and bowed deeply in respect to the godly figure that was staring down at her.

A bag? What was this? As Zanna straightened herself out once again, she took a look at the bag, pulling at the key, before attempting to pull it open as directed. When there was nothing in there, the Goddess almost seemed a bit flustered, apologizing... before instantly changing tracks to ask if Zanna could help her recover it. With scissors? What was the woman asking her to do?

... A ...

A heart?

Zanna's own blue heart welled up in her throat, making it hard to swallow. They didn't make it? How did that excuse cutting out their heart? It was innately upsetting to Zanna, but she also knew better than to argue with a Goddess, the one who would determine her future.

She fidgeted, before bowing her head and taking her key. "I will do as asked."

It was as simple as that, the candidate scurrying off to the three doors. She was surprised at the sensations coming off each door, the first peaceful, the second unnerving, and the third outright malicious. It seemed to make sense that she should pick the first door, the one that came of least threat to her and gave off the best impression, but something in Zanna was always drawn to the things that seemed the worst off, wanting to soothe them before they became worse. It was something she was ... born feeling.

With a swallow, she stepped into the third door.

The room was terrible.

It was dark. It was silent. It was unnerving. All she could hear was the sounds of thuds, the sounds of thumps, and sounds she could barely even place. Zanna closed her eyes, for the moment, deciding it did her little to no good to even have them open. All she realized with them open was that it was dark. If she wanted to not be terrified, she needed to not concentrate on the fact that it was dark. If it was dark with her eyes closed, the darkness felt natural.

Zanna walked right into an obstacle, perhaps as a consequence of her closed eyes. What was that? Unable to keep eyes closed anymore, she opened her eyes, looking down and attempting to make out better what she saw. Was what a ... crate? What was making that noise?

She saw what was sticking out -- an arm.

It didn't belong.

She knew where the noise was coming from now, the arm moving around in an odd motion that kept thudding against the crate. Perhaps she could stop it. Instinctively, to make it stop, she grabbed onto the arm with one hand, holding tightly until the thumping ended. When it did, Zanna calmed down significantly. It was alright. She could do this. She could handle whatever the Goddess requested her do.

With the arm subdued, Zanna decided to reach into the obstructing crate, feeling around in an attempt to figure out what was inside. The material was strange, firm, but yet soft to the touch of her fingers. As she attempted to understand more, she moved in more ... and then heard it.

The heart.

Zanna swallowed hard, knowing that this was what the Goddess requested. This, below her hand, was what was requested. She didn't want to do it--and she felt the sickness forming in her stomach at the idea of a heart much like her own being put out--but she wouldn't let it stop her, taking out the scissors that the Goddess had given her.

She cut in, feeling around. Zanna both knew what she felt and didn't know what she felt, nor did she truly want to know what she was feeling. It was a knowledge she could do without, a knowledge made worse by the scream that echoed in her ears.

"NKOSAZANA!"

What was that name? Zanna froze, for a moment, shivering at the way the hand was clawing into her arm. Her body shook as she resumed, eyes shutting tight as she dug in further. The name, what was that? It sounded so familiar, that pain, and it was something she knew she had heard before. She saw a face, even with her eyes closed, and their eyes were closed too. They were crying. They were in pain, and Zanna couldn't figure out what to do about it. How could she comfort them? Was she able to? She needed to. Zanna knew that the person was someone she felt driven to comfort, a deep pulling at her heart as they seemed wrecked by their own emotion...

And then it was gone again, just as she got her hand on the heart, pulling on it in an attempt to pull it out. Something still had it. Why did something still have it?

As she cut the pieces off, she felt something else...

"Hello." His smile was terribly charming. Zanna felt a flush form on her face, eyes glancing to the side. Sure, he was of another clan, but that didn't mean she couldn't have a bit of an innocent crush, right? They had just met in person, anyway ... before, Zanna had only seen him from afar, because she didn't go to the other Isles terribly often.

"H-hey."

She was nervous. She felt nervous, in fact, and her hands were shaking as she, on autopilot, shoved the heart into the bag and shut it tight. To her, she was only putting away a gem from a jewelcrafter, a shy grin forming on her face. "I'm sorry. I am not usually approached. Do you need something?"

He laughed. That was horribly charming, too.

"Perhaps the hand of a fair maiden?"

"I'm afraid I'm not a maiden any longer."

He winked. "We may be long-lived, but that doesn't mean we are aged."

Zanna shook her head out of it, rubbing her temple. What was that ...? Whatever. She wanted to get out of here. She would do that now. Zanna turned and started to head back from where she came.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 16, 2013 1:35 pm

Zanna's adventure seemed to be mostly alone, though it felt like it took much longer to leave than it ever had coming in. In fact, the floor felt like it was changing underneath her. She pressed her feet into the ground, disturbed by how pliant the ground was, and how much it almost seemed to absorb her.

It continued as she moved on, beginning to surround her feet, feeling much less like solid ground and more like she was walking and treading in water. Had she taken a wrong turn? Cautious, she gulped, moving forward as she attempted to tread the water properly.

The cold was unpleasant, and Zanna shivered. She tried to walk faster, but to no prevail.

"Please give it back."

What was that? Zanna whipped her head around, looking for the source, but found herself unable to find it. The paranoia gripped her heart, and she had to move forward. The water only got deeper. She didn't care, though. She needed to go faster. She had to get away. Zanna picked up her pace, but found herself slowed by the water building around her, until she couldn't even move, up to her neck in water that felt like it was trying to drag her down. She had to turn around; she hadn't a choice. There was not a single other option for her.

"Please give me back my--"

Zanna would have screamed, but she couldn't get herself the breath too. She felt like she was drowning, unable to find the air. She struggled to get the hands off her neck, grabbing at them with her hands as she struggled underneath their grasp.

"Give me back my heart."

When she saw their face, as terrifying as it was, it appeared to melt into something else, a flash in her mind of her bringing her face closer to theirs. Why would she ever want to be closer? She flailed, struggling under the grip, though in her mind's eye, she pressed her lips to theirs, a small sigh escaping her lips.

"I love you," they mouthed.

Though they begged for their heart aloud.

Zanna pushed harder against the one she was fighting against, trying to ignore the thoughts her mind was swimming with. She had taken the heart of someone that important to her. She knew what the relationship there had once was. It was a relationship that she had broken from her, but it wasn't a relationship that she was angry with. It was a relationship she looked back on fondly, even if it didn't belong to her anymore.

And they were trying to kill her.

Because she had taken a lover's heart.

She felt her body losing strength the more the moments ticked on. She was going to die. It was going to end like this, and Zanna did not have a chance of fulfilling what the goddesses desired of her. She struggled, harder, pushing against the hands, but at no prevail.

There was no option left.

She knew what she lived for. What was most important to her was the goddesses and their blessings. One day, she would be one of them. Her goal was to become one of the goddesses and sit at their sides, as she was told was her purpose when she entered this world.

Zanna struggled, fishing for her only weapon. She had used them earlier to tear their heart out, and now she needed to use it to end them. When this was over, and when she was a goddess too, she could come back for them, and it would be okay.

Then it would be okay.

Until then, she grabbed the scissors, thrusting them forward into the murky, greyed cavity she saw in front of her. There was a scream--

And then nothing.

Zanna coughed up the water that had gathered in her lungs, breathing in and out sharply as she attempted to orient herself. Was there light? She could see light. Zanna needed to escape. She--shakily--got up to her feet, turning towards the exit. Yes. She could leave; leave this all behind her and deliver the necessary heart to the goddess. That was how she would please the goddesses, and eventually become one of her own.

For a moment, she turned back behind her.

The figure was--

Zanna didn't give herself another moment to look before she fled into the light.

[ Task Three ]

"Yet, you are still so little."

Zanna found that, today, there was another goddess. This one she recognized fondly, her own blue heart matching the coloration of the blues on the goddess. She was a devotee of Longing, and this was the Goddess of Longing. The goddess gave a much different impression than the others she had seen, nervous and inclined to fidget where she stood. Zanna could not resist the offer of cookies, though, and took one from the tray.

"Thank you," offered she to the goddess, humbly, bowing her head as the deity continued. It was an odd proposal, she gave. Teas? Knowing emotions? How would teas help her learn emotions? They were drinks, were they not? She seemed so desperate, too, and eager, and Zanna had a hard time even questioning if she should resist.

But of course, she should not. This was a goddess, and she was a Candidate. As a Candidate, she needed to do what she was told by the goddesses.

At the urging, Zanna nodded, heading over to the table as she was told. It was time to see what ... emotions she would make? Hm...

The music was soothing.

Zanna did not quite recognize it, but it made her feel nostalgic. She admittedly did not understand what the nostalgia was for--nothing here reminded her of anything she could actively remember--but she felt something fond brewing in her heart, something she wished she could go back to and do once again. She sighed, contentedly, closing her eyes and letting herself enjoy that and the crunch of the odd, white substance underneath her feet. It was pleasant. She felt ... welcomed here.

When she arrived at the table, she saw that there were two jars standing there. Her hand fidgeted as she glanced between the two, trying to figure out which of the jars she was supposed to be taking. One was pink, and one was blue. The blue one leaked feelings of displeasure, something tense, something that erased the good feeling she felt and made her feel more nervous. That was not what she wanted, but perhaps that was what she was seeking? To solve the problems that she felt in her heart?

The other one, though, was pink, and the sensation the pink jar gave her was one that warmed her bones. The nostalgic feeling she felt came back, redoubled with a fondness she so desperately wanted to enjoy.

But perhaps she really should understand what the Blue was. Perhaps that would bring more meaning.

She selected the blue teapot and drank from it, the nostalgic, happy feeling being washed away with the urge that she couldn't forget something that was slipping right out of her fingers. An agitation began to build in her form, her body fidgeting as she attempted to understand. Perhaps she should wash this down. That might help the sensation that was overtaking her. Uncomfortable, she looked around for anything, finding that the table was changing right before her eyes.

A cupcake, candy, and chocolate?

None of it looked particularly appetizing, and Zanna admitted she was beginning to feel a regret for her choice ... just like those candies were regretful. She shook her head, wondering why any of these seemed to be a decent option, and why she couldn't just let herself drink from the pink jar--

No, she couldn't let herself forget.

Carefully, she picked up the candies, deciding they suited the mood she suddenly felt herself in. Immediately, the mood weighed on her deeper, a guilt building in her heart she couldn't explain. Perhaps she didn't want to eat those candies? Washing this down would be good. She looked around for something to wash the candies down with, not wanting to taste these disgusting things any longer.

That was when she discovered the table had changed again.

Three cups, all of which invoked a sensation she did not want. Not wanting to look at them any longer, but wanting to be rid of the horrible taste, Zanna grabbed at the first one she saw, a cup with molted black and grey. The sensation of regret and guilt only seemed to get worse, causing her heart to ache as her eyes widened with some level of horror.

This was her memory.

"Nkosazana! Come out of there!"

Her eyes lifted as she looked behind her, a regretful smile on her face as she shook her head. "I'm sorry." She felt the words come out of her lips, and for some reason, they made her internally wince. Why? "I'm busy at the moment. We can talk later." That phrasing sounded familiar, like she had said it almost all too often. Absorbed in her studies, Nkosazana was, but it was only so she could become the best priestess she could possibly be. Her life was for her people.

As much as she knew that, the guilt that ached in her heart only seemed to grow stronger with the blips she saw in her mind, along with a panic rising in her heart. Her blue heart was beating hard as she found herself running to someone an indiscernible amount of time later--but perhaps the time didn't really matter. She felt herself saying, "Is he okay? Please tell me he's okay! He's not hurt too badly is he? Is he too sick? Will he survive?" The panic she felt welling up was enough to make Nkosazana shake, hands clenching and unclenching as she tried to figure out what she could possibly do.

The woman she was talking to turned to her. She couldn't remember her name, but her name didn't matter. There was some regret in her eyes, as she turned away. "I don't know. By the time they found him, he was already in this state..." The woman turned away, for a moment, before turning back to face her.

"And--?"

The woman sighed. "Someone said he was calling for you. For help? I don't know. But you couldn't hear him, so he just kept staying out there. I don't think his type is used to the colder weather. It isn't quite like us; we're always like this. Why didn't you come out?"

Nkosazana fell silent. The moments felt like infinity, and the pain that dug in only seemed to dig in deeper as the moments went by. It was no longer a sharp panic she felt. It was concern. It was some amount of horror. Had she ... ignored him too long? He had stayed out there? She didn't once think to get up and see if he was okay! She had thought he had left, and done something else, but she had just let one of her fellow horsemen... even if of a different clan... stay outside of her abode and freeze. And everyone saw it. There was no way no one would have noticed. "He ... stayed out there?"

"Yes. A few of the others reported seeing him out there for hours. War doesn't really stay in the chill much, you know."

"So it's ... my fault?"

The woman shook her head, but it was already too late. It was her fault. She was the one who had caused it. She was the reason why he needed the attention of a skilled healer ... and everyone knew it. She wasn't attentive enough. Everyone knew it. The embarrassment dug in, and Nkosazana--

=======

-- wanted nothing more than to be rid of it.

Zanna was glad when the memory was over, but the shame she felt kept stirring in her heart. No, she didn't like this. It was right, it was time to sample someone else's tea. Perhaps she would feel better after that. She wouldn't cause any injuries due to her own self-absorption there. How shameful; couldn't she look up for one damn moment?
