He was beyond the borders of the Summit, Wyeth knew. It was probably not the most sensible of courses to take, given the danger of the current situation and his very noticeable coat. It was also not the most responsible of courses, given that he was supposed to be keeping tabs on the herd border. Still, he hadn't just flown off willy-nilly, having first talked to the guard immediately to the east of his own territory. He had agreed to cover for Wyeth while the younger stallion went further south beyond the Summit territory.
Wyeth was grateful, because there was something else that bothered him beyond his own actions and the state of the Kalona herd. Namely, his younger brother, who was not a true fighter, was currently beyond the safely of the Summit and Wyeth had no idea where.
He understood the need for Raines to put distance between himself and their home, and could even respect his brother's individuality, up to a point. but right now was no time for indulging whims, and nothing would please Wyeth nearly as much as seeing his brother home safely. He had asked to widen his flight pattern with the specific hope of seeing either Raines, or the massive flocks of birds Raines traveled with.
He had not expected to see a Kalona.
Wyeth saw the Kalona before it saw him, his high height effectively muffling the sound of his wingbeats. But after a few heart stopping moments during which Wyeth pondered the best course of action, he realized, rather to his amazement, that the kalona took no notice of him at all. It's attention seemed to be completely focused on a large shrub...
From his aerial viewpoint, Wyeth had a slight advantage over the kalona when it came to perspective. As he looked to see what it was that could be attracting the Kalona, he caught sight of red and brown in the middle of the shrub...
A mare. There was a mare in there, and the Kalona was hunting her. Everything crystalized in the span of a moment for Wyeth, and without hesitating, he was descending as rapidly as he could, horn down and ready for action as he rammed full-bodily into the Kalona stallion, who had turned too late to fully avoid the alicorn's attack. Both stallions were driven back several lengths by the force of impact, and Wyeth's expression was fierce as he snarled at the Kalona, "Back off!"
