Step 1: Capture Win: 50-100 (-5 for Drakeins, +20 for trying to capture this creature ten times before, +10 for having two companions) 25-100 Rolled: 83 Outcome: Success! Words: 378
Sam shook his head stiffly as he flew over the cliffs of Ayr. He could scarcely believe how much work this whole taming business was turning into. When he started, he was pretty sure he'd breeze right through. Dive in, pick Crowell up his pet, and be done with it. But no. This was turning into a real challenge. He'd even had to recruit (by chance, of course) two companions to aid in his quest. It seemed like a good idea, at first, but after Grrel rallied the last Dactyl nest Samael tried to infiltrate, he started to wonder if it really was beneficial... Oh, well. There was no going back on it now. Since he was already this far in, Sam was going to finish this. Glancing down, he spotted a few scattered nests. Not much of a colony, but better than nothing. "Hey, look down there!" He called to the two other Drakeins.

Grrel flew slightly behind Sameal and Toki as she smugly digested her small snack. The things were rather tasty! She'd have to wait for them to kidnap one to try and tame it before going in and grabbing herself another snack though. When Sameal called out, she looked down and saw several nests. Tiny so maybe she shouldn't eat these ones... the bigger hoards of the little beasts tended to be easier to snag while the small groups fought to defend every member of their group..... "Looks good I guess.. Kinda small so Toki and I can hold off any attacks while you go in and grab an egg...." She said as she hovered over the pitiful nests.
Toki was wondering if Grrel would be much help in this taming business. Eating the Dactyl's like she did certainly wasn't going to help them! he could smell some Dactyls nearby, but nothing like the large clan they'd just left behind. At Grrel's words he nodded, "Best you do that Sameal, my eye loss would mean I'd probably destroy an egg before I managed to pick one up. Lets go for as little destruction as we can." With this he turned his head to glare sightlessly at Grrel, a clear warning for her to behave herself this time.

Sam had never really seen the smaller group as a bad thing. It always seemed like a good idea to have less creatures to fight. He nodded dutifully. "Sounds like a plan." His wings beat heavily and quickly as he flew around slowly, trying to pick the best target. "Hm..." His gaze wandered slowly and landed on a nest guarded by four of the fluttering creatures. Nothing he couldn't maneuver through, and if, for some reason, he couldn't Grrel and Toki shouldn't have too much trouble defending him. "Alright, try and keep up, Grrel!" He teased playfully, grinning toothily as he swooped up then dove toward the nest, tucking his wings tightly against his body. The Dactyls were hardly aware of Samael until he was right on top of them. He clutched at the rock face, digging his sharpened claws into the stone to hold himself in place while the tiny, annoying creatures were taken care of. When a group shrieked and dove for him, the Drakein summoned a flurry of assaulting pebbles from the cliffside to shoo them away. Slowly, he slunk toward the nest, depending on his two companions to keep the Dactyls away as he delicately scooped one of the eggs into his jaws, careful not to crush it. Once his prize was collected, he shot back toward the ground.

Grrel grinned at Sameal's flung back tease as he dove, keep up with him ehh? Kiandri's were the fastest Drakeins about! There was no way she couldn't keep up with him! She too then dove down, following him closely with ease. Once they hit the Dactyl group, she flared her wings and lashed her tail out to knock away any Dactyls near Sameal. This would be easy! She hissed a challenge at the Dactyls as she hovered above Sameal. Once she saw Sameal fly off, she followed, making sure to lead keep herself between Toki and the cliff so he wouldn't run into it.
Toki too chuckled at Sameal's sally and dove after them. Youngsters! he thought with a smile, always in a rush! It was easy to keep up with them, he just let his large weight speed his fall and then he pulled up slightly after Grrel. He could easily sense her and knew from her position how far to go to stay away from the nests and cliff face. All the adults of the clan knew how to fly when with Toki: they had all learned that he based his position of of them and instinctively flew at a certain distance from obstacles when with him. He could always sense the ground but while going at fast paces he could, and had in the past, misjudged the distances. It was easier to sense the magic of another Drakein than it was to sense the Earth. He just hovered there until he sensed Sameal shoot off towards the ground. Folding his wings, he followed Sameal downwards.
Step 2: Taming Win: 50-100 (-5 for Drakeins, +20 for trying to capture this creature ten times before, +10 for having two companions) 25-100 Rolled: 51 Outcome: Success! Words: 531
Sam landed as gently as he possibly could, fanning his wings to stall his fall much sooner than he normally would. He didn't want to jar the tiny unborn creature before it had a chance to hatch. Once safely on the ground, he tipped his whole body to the side, letting the egg roll free of his teeth. Once he physically saw it sitting on the ground before him, all peaceful and quiet and not rotten, Sam beamed. "We did it!" He chirped, prancing in a circle around his new charge. "Oh, this is great! I can't wait to tell Crowell! He'll be so excited! I mean, he was the first couple of times too, but those didn't turn out so well..." He paused in his rambling to turn an eye toward the other two Drakeins. "But I've got a good feeling about this one." Sam said with a grin.

Grrel and Toki landed next to Sameal and both smiled at him as he pranced about excitedly. Grrel's smile was slightly superior: you wouldn't find her acting that silly! "Oh good, then I guess..." She was about to say before Toki poked her in the side with his tail. She gave him an offended look as he spoke up.
"I would like to stick around and help you try and tame it now. My taming attempts usually end badly, so perhaps watching you will help me to figure it out," He said with a smile. He knew Grrel hated Ayr, but he wasn't going to go back now! He wanted to 'see' how Sameal would do this. Plus she could always go out and try fighting while he and Sameal figured out this taming stuff.
Grrel grumbled and sighed but finally gave in. A bland stare from Toki usually made most people cave in. Something about how they were blind and yet seem to focus right in on you was nerve wracking.

"Stick around..." Sam said thoughtfully. He usually brought his catch straight home, so that he could raise it in the comfort of his own den. But maybe the trick was to do it where the Dactyl would be most comfortable, in the climate it would normally grow up in. Plus, Sam could watch the other Dactyls from afar to see how they cared for their young. He smiled. "Yes, I'd like that a lot! Let's see what we can do with this little bugger!"
The next few weeks felt like forever. After obtaining his egg, Sam hunted for a decent place to hole up until the thing hatched. He wanted to be near the other Dactyls without making them suspicious and also as far away from any wandering Ayralas as he possible could be. Eventually, he settled on a secluded rock outcropping on the ground. The slanted stones met with the cliff, providing a decent shelter. The most boring part was waiting for the egg to hatch. Ocassionally, Sam would catch Toki taking a nap and would - as discretely as he possibly could - slip the unhatched egg under one of the older Drakein's wings while Samael went out to stretch, fly, hunt, or Dactyl watch. He found he couldn't be bothered by Grrel's complaining. Sometimes, he'd even join in, if only because he was getting desperate to return to his own den.
Fortunately, the egg was under Sam's protection when it hatched. It promptly peeped and screeched its nearby relatives into a frenzy. Scooping the thing into his mouth, Sam had decided that to prevent this from happening again, they should find a new niche. Possibly one a little higher up. And confined, at least until the thing learned it needed to come to them for food, though, frankly, it seemed to know Grrel was the one to go to if it wanted to eat... He shook his head as one evening it sat near her screeching and begging for some of her kill. Sam sighed. The little Dactyl seemed to be getting along okay... He'd have to take it home to Crowell before too much longer. Hopefully it would take to him like it had taken to Grrel. Sam couldn't help but chuckle as it hoped on her.

Over the next few weeks Grrel was slightly unhappy. She was stuck in this damp chilly place and had to help baby sit an egg. Eggs were fine, if they were Drakein. Grrel was happy when Sameal complained too, maybe they could throw this harebrained scheme out the window and go someplace decent that good sun. But Toki just smirked and ignored their complaints, treating them like little kids when they complained. Grrel spent the time usually stalking Dragons to try and see how to better fight them. She felt safer since she knew Sameal and Toki were nearby and could help her if she needed it so she tended to be m0ore aggressive. She didn't fight any to the death, but she did manage to make them flee sometimes instead of fleeing herself, which made her enormously proud. The Cave of Dragons had helped after all. Grrel was napping when the Dactyl finally hatched and started screeching. Startled out of her nap by the loud noise, she was halfway through preparing a spell when she realized that it wasn't an attack. But then the nearby Dactyls got antsy and nervous so when Sameal left the cave she followed and helped clear out a new one to live in. Now that the thing had hatched, she was just a bit curious about it. Kienlings were much more adorable and less noisy in her opinion, but it wasn't that bad.... Since Toki was blind, she didn't want to let him go wandering about trying to hunt, so she took that duty upon herself. Because she always brought in food, the tiny thing followed her about, always begging. She pretended to act aloof and ignore it mostly, but she always sneaked it food when she thought no one was looking.
Toki was enjoying his vacation, as he thought of it. He wasn't being bothered by the clan or having to teach the clan's children. It was rather nice. Though he still had two overgrown children with him it seemed. Sameal and Grrel both liked to complain. He spent a lot of his timing napping as they waited for the egg to hatch. He felt Sameal sneak the egg under his wings every now and then. He found it amusing rather amusing and allowed Sameal to continue doing so. Once the egg hatched he sighed, it was like a Keinling, so noisy.... At least it has spunk, the Lirkrepts I got just whimpered all the time, he thought. After the move, he paid close attention to what the Dactyl did. Apparently bringing back dead beasts and feeding it makes it like you, he was very much amused at Grrel and her attempts to be aloof and failing. Maybe I should go for a Lirkrept egg next he thought, they seem to be easier to tame. It liked Grrel well enough, but wasn't this supposed to be for a friend of Sameal's?
"So you've managed to keep this one a live and it seems tame. But will it stay with your friend?" Toki asked Sameal one day when the Dactyl was sleeping and Grrel out hunting again. It was good that the young Dactyl was thriving, but if it was to be a gift, its attachment to Grrel wasn't going to be a good thing.
Step 3: Training Win: 50-100 (-5 for Drakeins, +20 for trying to capture this creature ten times before, +10 for having two companions, +5 for Dactyl training bonus) 20-100 Rolled: 76 Outcome: Success! FINALLY! Words:
Sam sighed at Toki's question. He'd never actually gotten this far before, so it was difficult to say. "I don't really know." He admitted with a shrug. Hopefully it would follow them without a fuss back to Eowyn... He bet if he let Grrel string it along with a bit of food it'd be perfectly content to fly with them. Sam couldn't help but chuckle at the thought. But Crowell could hardly hunt for himself... Sam shook his head. Maybe that would be something to look into, once he was back home. Getting the thing to hunt for itself when the timing was right. "Hm..." Sam hummed thoughtfully, his tail twitching against the ground. "If you wouldn't mind, would you accompany me back to Eowyn? I know it's a bit of trouble, but it would be unfortunate to loose the little beast this far in."

Grrel came back from hunting and dropped the dead Sriliarn on the floor. "Leaving? Finally! And we're headed to Eowyn anyways! That's where our clan lives." She lashed her tail happily, finally time to leave this damp and dreary place!
Toki chuckled. "Grrel can accompany you. I'll take my time and visit a few places before I return to the clan." He wasn't ready to go back into the daily grind of being a shaman, now that he was about and about, he felt the old call of adventure and exploration that he once had heard long ago. Besides, how was he to find a Drakein to train if he just sat at home? No one int eh clan had the urges to be a shaman, so he had to go find one! Grrel stared at him, "Wha-? Not that I mind leaving you behind old one, but I'll get in trouble if I let you wander about on your own! Sides, how are you going to find your way back to the clan?"
Toki sighed and rolled over to scratch his back up against the floor. "Oh hush you. I can find my way back just fine! I've been getting lost and unlost longer than you're parents have been alive! So long as there are two of you then I'm sure that you can train the Dactyl to be a pet or something."

The Dactyl chirped loudly and darted to the newly captured prey, throwing its beak down into the fleshy creature. Samael could only shake his head as he watched the little nuisance. It was going to be quite the bother. He chuckled in amusement at Grrel's excitement. He had to admit that he was ready to get home as well... Though it seemed like Toki... wasn't? The brown Drakein tilted his head and sidled closer to his orange friend. "Is it really alright to leave him behind?" Of course, it didn't seem like Toki cared too much, but Sam would feel awful if something were to happen to the older Drakein... "Maybe we should stay for a bit longer. Just to see how well it takes to training..." Sam stared at the little Dactyl, chewing happily through it's meal. "He's supposed to be a good guard pet for a young friend of mine, but he likes Grrel so much, I'm just not sure he'd take to anyone else..." Samael started thoughtfully. "Let's try and get him to hunt on his own." He decided. Maybe that would help quell the little beast's attraction to Grrel and make him into a more useful guard.

Toki snorted loudly. Of course he would be just fine! But he let it go, no sense in getting in a tiffle about that. And Sameal's idea about the training seemed like a good one. "Perhaps if instead we give him commands and stuff and reward him when he does the correct thing? It works with Keinlings..." Toki had only ever trained intelligent creatures before.. well, Drakeins with the potential of intelligence at least.
Grrel sighed at Sameal's comment. No it probably wasn't a good idea, but Toki had that stubborn look to him. There probably wasn't a way to keep Toki from exploring, so she'd just have to tail him or something. Or let him get lost... He was always setting tests for her so why not the other way around? If he got lost, she'd be able to find him anyways. And if he didn't? Well, then maybe the chief would stop sending people to babysit the older Drakein. "I'd like to leave as soon as possible, I really hate this place. Maybe we can get your friend to train him? That way the little beast knows who his boss is?" Plus a younger Drakein would be very eager to do this while she was much too lazy to try and train something!

Despite how Sam felt about leaving Toki behind, the other two Drakein probably knew and understood more than some outsider did, so Samael let it drop and focused his energy on the Dactyl. More than anything, Sam was worried the little beast would flutter off on the trip back to Eowyn, but he found that by dangling a small morsel in front of it's face every few minutes, he could lead it just about anywhere, even scaling the Ayr cliffsides. Fortunately, he found that even if he ran out, the little beast would actually sit dutifully by him and wait for Sam to collect a bit more prey. That didn't stop him from being a nervous wreck as he and Grrel flew back toward his home, though. By now, he expected the thing wouldn't get much larger, and it seemed to know that it would never be hungry if it stuck by the two Drakeins. The Dactyl peeped, chirped and screeched nearly the whole way, though every time it quieted for even an instant, Sam paused mid-flight to whirl around and search for it. If it wasn't near him, it was chattering next to Grrel, eagerly awaiting his next bite. Every so often, it would even take up a perch on one of them, not being built to fly the longer distances the Drakein could handle. It was these times when the creature lay tucked between his shoulder-blades that Sam felt he'd made the perfect pet choice.
By the time he landed amongst the crags of his home, the Dactyl was awake again. And hungry. They hadn't been able to carry too much with them, for fear of lagging. The foreign sounds from the Dactyl summoned a few curious heads peeking from their lairs. And a few annoyed ones. But Sam did his best to quiet any complaints. Another thing to teach this little squirt was silence... Of course, none were quite as interested as the flightless little Keindred once he saw that his clanmate had returned with -not an egg - but a nearly grown Dactyl!
Crowell's eyes lit up as Sam glided down to the youngsters cave, bringing the Dactyl with him. The Keindred's excitement only encouraged further peeps from the creature. Sam instantly realized that silence should be his top priority. Crowell's eagerness to play with his new pet wasn't the best motivation, but after a while, Sam managed to convince him that one of the older Drakein might eat him if he continued to screech like that. Eventually, they were all on the same level. The Dactyl was ignored and not given food while incessantly chirping. But, if it managed to remain quiet for more than a few seconds, Crowell rewarded him with a small piece of meat.
Crowell particularly enjoyed a similar training session, one that his mother actually agreed to participate in. The Dactyl learned that it was okay to speak when another Drakein entered the lair, and after a bit of practice was even capable of signaling who. Once for Nigerey, Crowell's mother; twice for Sam or Grrel; and three times for anyone else. The little beast learned it received the most positive attention from Crowell and was more than eager to follow him around. It even flew on the edge nearest the cliff, hoping to keep the Keindred from straying too close.
As it aged a bit more, Crowell clambered to the bottom of the cliffs, where the Dactyl learned to find tasty snacks; ones it didn't have to wait for if it took to hunting itself. Sam was always in range, of course, though he was starting to feel like an unnecessary third wheel...

Toki stayed with Sameal and Grrel for part of the flight back. He was much amused by the method of getting the Dactylto follow. The little glutton was certainly bribe-able! But then he smelled Serenia on the wind; it had a distinctive green and peaceful scent, one that he remembered very well. Bidding them goodbye, he banked off and flew away towards Serenia, eager to begin his tiny little adventure.
Grrel stuck with Samael all the way to Eowyn, helping give the little beast rides and feeding it sometimes. She managed to catch a few sea birds to sustain them on their flight but was still hungry when land came into sight.
She let Samael lead the way to his come in the crags, much as she wanted to go home for a bit. But then they'd ask where Toki was.. yeah, good idea to avoid the clan for a bit. She smirked when she saw people's reactions to the loud Dactyls cries. Apparently this clan had its own share of crotchety elders! She tried her best to not feed the Dactyl as Sameal was trying to get it attached to Crowell, but it was tough. She'd gotten used to the little pest! Maybe she should go find one of her own? Less noisy preferably....
She was quiet happy when Sameal came up with the idea of giving the Dactyl food when it was quiet and ignoring it when it was loud. It lead to some very loud angry hissy fits from the Dactyl, but hey, eventually it calmed down and was some what quieter! I'll have to tell Toki that trick! All in all, watching Sameal and Crowell train the Dactyl was intriguing and it gave her ideas.. perhaps Toki wasn't the only one who would have a pet some day! Eventually the Dactyl was trained and she left the clan to go back to her own home. She hoped Toki had made it back before her so he could bear teh brunt of the Chief's ire!
