Elesh Norn floated silently in the Howling Forest, her eyes closed as she shut everything out. A loud cackle echoed from somewhere deeper within the forest, and she almost missed the small glimmer of familiarity. Tears welled in her eyes and her lips curved into a smile.
She's here.
With blinding speed, the darkrai glided through the forest toward Motterosa. Wait for me, Lenore...!

Lenore watched with vague interest as Mephistopheles defeated yet another wild pokemon. "We can battle the gym leader any time we want, right? You don't have to battle wild pokemon anymore if you don't want to."
Mephistopheles shook his head. "No, it's better this way. If I just battle the same pokemon over and over again, I'll grow complacent." He floated over to the girl, who had gone back to reading her book. "Winning battles gets us money, which gets you food." He glanced down at the book in her hands and rolled his eye. "Even if you spend most of it on books..."
Lenore looked up at the duskull and tilted her head, confused. "I don't eat much, and you said that you get all the energy you need from my soul, right? Why's it a problem?"
Mephistopheles shook his head. "It's not, it's just -" He broke off and spun around to look at the hill behind him.
Lenore tried to see what he was looking at, but it was too dark out and the hill too far away for her to discern anything. "What's wrong?"
Mephistopheles raised his arms, and an army of tendrils erupted into being around him. "Someone's here. Someone strong."

Elesh Norn arrived at the top of a hill and felt the presence she had been hoping to find for so long. Five years! Five years she had searched and searched for the girl, and finally they could be together again! Tears of joy streamed down her face as she remembered all the happy moments they had shared together. Countless happy moments, ripped away by a single, awful, moment.
But as she looked down at the girl, her joyous expression turned to that of horror. She wanted to scream out to the girl, to tell her to run, to run as far as possible and never look back. But she couldn't scream out to her, couldn't even whisper to the girl of the danger she was in. She rushed down the hill with blinding speed as the familiar tendrils of shadow erupted around the pokemon she hated more than anything in existence. She glared through her tears with hatred at Mephistopheles.
She launched a blast of pure darkness at the duskull, but the tendrils intercepted the attack. The blast expanded on impact before shrinking out of existence, and all trace of the tendrils were gone.
I won't let you kill her again!

Mephistopheles was caught off guard by the power of the attack - it was as if the tendrils had been erased from existence itself. He rapidly called up more to defend against other such attacks.
"Lenore, get away from here! This one is too strong!" He spared a quick glance away from the darkrai towards the girl to find her frozen in place, wide-eyed. Another blast forced his concentration back to the battle that was playing out before him. Summoning more tendrils, he sent them racing at the darkrai. "NOW!"
Startled by the duskull's outburst, Lenore scrambled to her feet and rushed away.

Elesh Norn scowled as more tendrils appeared. She cast a quick glance at Lenore to make sure she was alright, and saw Mephistopheles looking at her as well. She wasn't moving from her spot in the grass. The darkrai wanted to cry out to her to run while she distracted the duskull, and she cursed her inability to do so.
Get away from her!
She fired another blast at the tendrils, and again they blinked out of existence, grabbing the duskull's attention. However, more replaced them just as quickly, and then rushed towards her. Her eyes wide, Elesh Norn retreated backwards before sending another blast at the newest batch of tendrils.
From behind the duskull, the girl began to run away, and the darkrai breathed a sigh of relief. I'm so glad... She turned a hateful glare upon Mephistopheles. Don't worry, Lenore; I'll absolutely protect you this time. I swear it!
The runes all over her body began to glow and pulse with immense power as she tapped into what few remaining reserves she had left. If it gets rid of that monster and saves Lenore, then it's worth it. Any price is worth it. She outstretched her arms as the runes glowed with ever-greater intensity, and darkness pooled above her, swirling like a maelstrom of pure hatred. A stunning pain ripped into Elesh Norn as a tendril impaled her in the shoulder, and she gasped in agony. Gritting her teeth, she glared at Mephistopheles again. I'm not as easy to kill as Lenore, monster...!
The dark energy stopped swirling and spread out like a tidal wave as it rushed towards Mephistopheles.
Disappear!

Such hatred...!
Mephistopheles wasn't sure what he'd done to earn such ire from the other pokemon, but he wasn't about to let anything happen to Lenore. The tendrils disappeared again, and the darkrai began to glow. Material similar to the blasts it had been firing began to collect in the air above it and Mephistopheles' jaw dropped. There was no way he could protect against something like that.
His arm shot forward, and a single tendril rocketed at the darkrai, stabbing into her shoulder, but the darkrai merely continued to glare at him with those hate-filled eyes. The material stopped collecting and spread over the sky before falling down upon him. The duskull looked on in despair, knowing there was no way he could escape something that huge.
"STOP IT!"
Out of the corner of his eye, the duskull saw Lenore run back toward him, tears in her eyes. That fool! He rushed toward her, trying in vain to shield her from what he knew he couldn't stop.

"STOP IT!"
Elesh Norn's attention was ripped from the duskull as Lenore rushed in front of Mephistopheles, and the darkrai stared in abject horror as she realized what would happen. She was too spent to be able to stop the attack; Mephistopheles would vanish, but so would Lenore. She would kill Lenore with the very power she used to try to save her. Elesh Norn immediately began to glide to Lenore.

Lenore scrambled away from the battle, stunned by Mephistopheles' outburst. She had been with the duskull for months and had never seen him so worked up. Was his opponent truly that dangerous? She cast a glance over her shoulder to see Mephistopheles' tendrils vanish as they were hit by the darkrai's attack. Gone, without any trace that they were ever there.
A cold feeling washed over her as she thought about what would happen if Mephistopheles was hit by such an attack. She stopped running as tears welled up in her eyes, her thoughts dragged back to that day in Orre. The fire burning, roaring, drowning out her cries, the jeers of the crowd. The girl's eyes went wide as she relived that day, her breathing quick and shallow.
The fire, too big, they're killing him, they're killing him, oh make it stop make it stop make it stop! Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? I don't want to be alone again! Why? Leave him alone!
A tear streamed down the girl's face, frozen in fear. "No...." Shaking uncontrollably, she turned back to Mephistopheles and began running back to him. "STOP IT!"
She wasn't sure what she could do to help - no, that wasn't true. She knew there wasn't anything she could do to help. She was weak, a weak and pathetic girl who had been left alone in a place she didn't know surrounded by people that didn't like her. But Mephistopheles changed all that, and she couldn't just let him die. Not then, not now.
Mephistopheles charged towards her, and she saw the darkrai do the same. If she was more calm, she would have wondered about the darkrai's actions, but as it were, she could only think about Mephistopheles and her desire to protect him. A burning sensation erupted on her chest, but she paid it no mind - protecting Mephistopheles was more important. Reaching the duskull, she grabbed him in a hug, holding him as tightly as she possibly could.
The world faded to white.

Elesh Norn was stunned as she saw Lenore wrap Mephistopheles in a hug. He's not trying to kill her? The duskull began to glow a faint red, and a wall of tendrils erupted into being behind Elesh Norn, holding off the dark energy. As they disappeared, more and more appeared to take their place. But even so, the wall of energy continued to press forward. Elesh Norn redoubled her charge as the world faded to white.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ellie. Ellie!"
The darkrai opened a single eye to the woman standing above her. {What is it, Lenore?}
Lenore brushed her long black hair out of her eyes and scoffed. "We have a match today, remember? Come on, it's about to start!" The woman grabbed the darkrai by the hand and began tugging. "We're gonna be late!"
Elesh Norn allowed herself to be pulled up by Lenore, smiling all the while. The woman narrowed her eyes and a teasing expression crossed her lips. "What's with that smile, Ellie? You thinking about what's-his-face?"
Suddenly flustered, the darkrai started waving her hands. {No, no! It's not like that! I just respect him, that's all! There's absolutely nothing going on between us, Lenore! Nothing!}
Lenore clasped her hands behind her back as she spun around, grinning. "Oh, really? Even though I never said there was, and was just meaning about our battle today? You sure?"
If Elesh Norn could blush, she'd have been color variant at that moment. She fumbled over her words for a time before just flying ahead. Lenore laughed and called after the darkrai. "Aw, c'mon, Ellie! I'm just teasing you!"
Once she was far enough ahead of Lenore that she was sure she wouldn't be seen, the darkrai placed a hand up to her lips, thinking of him again. {Mephistopheles...}

"You got that, monster? Kill the girl, and our deal is done."
Mephistopheles gave a cold glare to the man he had formed a pact with. A fat, slovenly creature; unworthy of respect. "Understood." The duskull floated down into the stadium, and bowed before Elesh Norn, who gave him a hurried bow back.
The duskull didn't bear any ill will towards Lenore; from what little he had seen, she was a genuinely kind person, if a bit rude. Nevertheless, the pact was what it was. She had to die.
He wasn't one for sneak attacks, but the strength of the darkrai all but required it. He had spent months gaining Elesh Norn's trust, and it gave him no pleasure to betray that trust in such a horrific way. But it didn't matter what he wanted. The pact was absolute. He raised his arms and summoned up a legion of spectral tendrils as he had so many times. A strategy that Elesh Norn had seen time and time again.
Elesh Norn failed to see the single tendril that rose up behind Lenore.
Mephistopheles cast an apologetic glance at the woman he was to murder. Perhaps, in another life, I could have formed a pact with you instead.
The tendril lurched forward, piercing Lenore's heart.

Elesh Norn gave a flustered bow to the duskull, Lenore's teasing still on her mind. She watched as Mephistopheles summoned his tendrils again, and she prepared to counter the way she always did. It was like a strange dance she had long since memorized. Mephistopheles' attention wasn't on the fight, however. The duskull was looking behind her. The darkrai turned just in time to see Lenore impaled by a single long tendril.
As the tendril vanished into a wispy shadow, Lenore fell forward, blood streaming from her chest and her mouth. Elesh Norn screamed, a sound that surprised even herself. The rock she had summoned crashed down in front of her as she rushed to Lenore's side, pushing the woman onto her back. She stared in abject horror as blood continued to pool around her, unslowing.
Lenore reached out to the darkrai and coughed up blood, grimacing. Elesh Norn looked back to Mephistopheles, but the duskull was gone, a wall of wispy shadow the only inclination he was ever there. Turning back to Lenore, the darkrai tried in vain to stop the bleeding, and the woman coughed up more blood. Lenore gazed into Elesh Norn's eyes for a fleeting moment before her arm dropped to her side, the blood splashing as her hand slammed down.
Elesh Norn shook the woman. {Lenore... Lenore! Please get up, please! I'll do anything! I'll listen to whatever you say, I promise! Just get up!} The darkrai choked back a sob as the tears began to flow. {Don't leave me!} The only response she received was the whisper of the wind blowing passively through the empty stadium.
The darkrai screamed again, a bestial roar that seemed to shake reality itself. The runes upon her body pulsated and glowed. unimaginable power being dragged forward. Please... Just let me see Lenore again.... Let me talk with her again... Let me do it all over.... I'd give anything! Please! The air hummed with power and the darkrai vanished.

Lenore grinned as she watched Elesh Norn's flustered bow. She totally likes him. Her attention was dragged away from Elesh Norn by the feeling that she was being watched. Mephistopheles was looking at her, not Elesh Norn. She tilted her head and a cold pain filled her upper body. Looking down, she saw one of the duskulls tendrils jutting out of her chest, soaked in blood.
"Oh."
The tendril vanished and she fell forward, slamming down hard. ...Am I dying? She'd never given how she'd die much thought. Was this a cool way to go, she wondered? A scream captured her attention, and Lenore cast a tired gaze upward. Ellie? She felt herself flipped onto her back and saw the darkrai's horror-filled face. I guess I am dying, then. Not exactly how I wanted it to happen. Didn't really want it to happen at all, I guess.
Lenore realized Elesh Norn would try to use her power to save her, and she reached out to the darkrai. "Ellie, it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself. Don't try to get me back, it's not worth it." She wanted to say all of that, but all that came out was a gurgle of blood. Lenore grimaced. Is that all I can do? Am I supposed to just let Ellie live with that self-imposed burden...?
Elesh Norn pressed her hands against the hole in the woman's chest, but the blood continued to flow freely. "Ellie! Don't do anything for me! Live for yourself!" But again all that came out was a simple gurgle. Lenore looked into the darkrai's wide eyes, feeling the life fading from her.
Ellie, I'm sorry.
Her hand dropped to her side as everything faded to black.

"So, it's done, then?" Mephistopheles nodded to the fat man. "Good. Serves the b***h right."
The duskull stared with revilement at the man he had formed a pact with, but he knew that it was simply a mirror of the hatred he felt for himself. Was the red skull so important to him that he had given up everything he believed in? He shook his head in disgust.
The man began to walk off. "Our pact's done, then, right? Go back to hell, monster." He stopped dead in his tracks as Mephistopheles appeared in front of him, lance in hand. "What are you doing?"
Mephistopheles gave the man a cold glare. "You said it yourself. The pact is done. I don't have to work with you anymore." He jabbed the lance into the fat man's foot, and he squealed like a pig. "I don't need you alive anymore."
"W-w-w-w-w-wait! You don't have to kill me! Look, if it's about calling you a monster, I apologize, alright?!" The duskull jabbed another lance into his other foot, and the man screeched in agony. "Don't kill me, please!"
Mephistopheles tilted his head mockingly at the man, a cruel glint in his eye. "'Kill you'? Like you ordered me to kill Lenore? No. Before long you'll be begging me to grant you as kind a mercy as death. Your soul is mine, remember? We're going to be together for a while longer."
The man began to sob from both fear and pain. "Why? I thought you hated things like this!"
"I do. But what's one more?" A portal opened up beneath the man, and he was dragged screaming into the abyss. Mephistopheles cast one final glance towards the stadium before going in after him.

Elesh Norn looked around, seeing a vastly different surrounding than the stadium she had been in just moments before. What happened...? Seeing a number of buildings in the distance, she flew over to them.
Once there, she noted a newspaper stand and looked at the date - the same as it was before she used her power, so it didn't manifest itself as time travel, then. She flipped through the newspaper for any information on Lenore, but there was nothing. Elesh Norn began to put the pieces together when she heard a gasp from behind her. She turned around, hoping to see Lenore, but it was a kid she'd never seen before. The child stood gaping in awe at the legendary pokemon, and the darkrai began to ask about Lenore but no sound emerged.
Placing a hand to her throat, Elesh Norn began to understand the terms of the contract she had created. As the child called out for his parents, the darkrai flew away. Alone in the outskirts of the town, she began to compile the information she had. It's not the same reality that I met Lenore in. The fact that I'm here means that the Lenore in this world is alive. The price seems to be my ability to speak. She didn't know if the price was permanent or temporary, but that wasn't important right now.
The runes along her body began to glow again. Where is Lenore now? Her mind filled with images of a girl sitting alone reading a book. That was Lenore? She was so young! She couldn't have been more than ten years old in this reality. But she was alive, and that's all that mattered. The images flickered and disappeared, and this time Elesh Norn knew the price immediately; she wouldn't be able to divine Lenore's location anymore. But before the images vanished, she was able to see that Lenore was in a desert-like environment, so that narrowed the coming search down greatly.
I'll find you, Lenore. I promise.

Elesh Norn's eyes opened slowly to see Lenore bending over her, a curious expression on her face. Lenore? Is this a dream? To her side, a voice convinced her it wasn't.
"Why did you save us?" Mephistopheles floated beside Lenore, watching the Darkrai carefully. Elesh Norn remembered little of what had happened after she began rushing at Lenore. She shook her head.
Lenore piped up. "Mef says you pushed us out of the way of your attack." She tilted her head. "Why'd you attack us if you didn't want us hurt?" Elesh Norn shook her head vigorously. She wanted so badly to explain that she only wanted to kill Mephistopheles, never to hurt Lenore. She cursed her inability to speak. Tears streamed freely down her face as she wished so fervently to be able to explain herself. Mephistopheles clearly held no ill will against the girl in this reality; she could see that now. Why did everything have to get so messed up? As she cried, she felt small arms wrap themselves around her as Lenore hugged her.
"I don't know why, but it feels like we've met before." Lenore stepped back, smiling. "You wanna come with us?" Huh? Mephistopheles began to object. "Lenore, I don't think you should be so quick to trust-" Another voice from behind Elesh Norn cut him off. "And why not? The girl allows me to accompany you." The darkrai turned to see a gastly grinning mischievously at the duskull. She felt an evil aura from the gastly, and she momentarily drew power, but the gastly gave her look that seemed to say 'don't even try it'. Remembering her previous discovery about Mephistopheles, she stood down.
The duskull turned to the gastly. "This doesn't concern you, Jin-Gitaxias." Jin-Gitaxias grinned. "Why shouldn't it? Am I not part of this team?" Lenore looked on as the two pokemon exchanged veiled threats in confusion. "Is something wrong?"
Mephistopheles continued to glare at Jin-Gitaxias. "It's nothing." The gastly continued to grin as the duskull turned and vanished.
