She was lurking right around the pride. Not quite around the dens or living areas, but not very far away. Hunting had not lasted long before she'd come back to sulk around the edges. She really went out and tried! She did. Just none of the prey ever cooperated the way she wanted it to. Today had been a fail from the start. The tawny lioness had decided she'd had enough after a couple hours. It was going to be her unofficial day off.
As much as she wanted to go back and relax, she didn't want to come back too soon. Kakra was making half-hearted attempts at hunting while she crept around. It was good the pride had better hunters than she, the lioness thought. Though she tried, more often than not she came back empty pawed. Rarely did she come back with a kill, and rarer still when it wasn't very young, scrawny, or old. She sighed and wondered where she went wrong. Others could do it; she couldn't. Enough time had passed now. Leaving off she rose up and openly moved toward the main area.

Madhu was enjoying adulthood, even the responsibilities. His thick mane felt good, he walked proudly, and was thrilled to be considered big enough and old enough to pull his weight in the pride. He didn't quite strut, but he did beam brightly at every individual he met. It felt good to be grown up!
It was his turn to hunt, so he was padding out towards the borders, tail swinging in high spirits behind him. He slowed though as he caught sight of a lioness coming back in. It wasn't someone he recognized, but his soft heart and good intentions were touched by the dejectedness she exuded. He stopped her, peering into her eyes with sympathy. "What's wrong, friend? Was the prey scarce?" His open expression encouraged sharing, and there was no mockery or scorn to be seen in his eyes. Madhu wanted to help, no question.

A lion came into sight far to quickly for her peace of mind. Had he been watching and waiting for her? Kakra tried to look calm as she walked past. Act cool and he won't notice.... The tawny lioness did her best not to cringe as he not only noticed her, but questioned her.
"I ah...... Oh the prey.... was ah.... quite skittish...." She nervously did a verbal sidestep around the question. It wasn't the prey had been scarce per se, but that her skill in stalking and catching it had been. Kakra looked for a way out and quickly. "So where are you going this fine day?" Distractions. They always worked.

magnadearel Sorry for the long delay! Life has been horribly hectic! She answered him, but acted... afraid of him? Perhaps not, but something was off. His brow furrowed, but not with anger or distrust. Rather, he was concerned, and nearly asked what was wrong. He stopped himself just short, though, as she genuinely looked anxious about him. If something was indeed wrong, it didn't seem she wanted him involved. Perhaps he was just reading too much into it all. He mentally shrugged, stayed watchful, but tried to let it go.
"Skittish, eh? Well, I was just heading out to hunt myself." His tone held a fair bit of ruefulness. A male hunting skittish prey was likely to come back empty pawed. His large, fluffy, dark mane made it a good bit more difficult for him to hide and stalk when his prospective target was already on the lookout. He wiggled his whiskers in thought, then gave her a speculative look. "We could... work together, and at least be able to bring something home between the two of us, rather than both having nothing." It seemed a logical option. Hunting alone wasn't always the best way to bring down prey. In fact, it was often the opposite. Granted, the girls weren't as likely to hunt with the boys, but that wasn't true of everyone.

Talencia I'm sorry! My muses ran away with the haitus. Kakra put on her best smile. It seemed to be working as he didn't ask any further awkward questions. She hated having to admit she sucked at hunting. "Oh, I'm sure you'll have much better luck than I did. I guess today just isn't my day." She gave a bit of a laugh at herself, to invite him into the joke. His offer to work together surprised her a great deal that she stopped laughing. Work together?
"That.... that doesn't sound like a bad idea." She scuffed her paw into the dirt. "If you have something in mind for me that doesn't require a lot of skills. I'm great at scaring prey away from me." Hopefully he didn't want any finesse.

He pondered this. Even the clumsiest hunters could succeed if they used their abilities, however limited, to their best advantage! "I sometimes have trouble too," he admitted aloud, heading towards the pride's open lands. "My mane makes it harder for me to sneak up on anything observant." He gave her a companionably rueful look. "Big waving tuft of hair tends to alert them that I'm out hunting them." He ran a paw over his mane, mussing it a little so it stood up at odd angles, then gave her a grin. "Perhaps if they are running from you, they won't be too picky about running past a poorly hidden mane?" He smiled, inviting her to both chuckle at his predicament as well as comment on his suggested strategy.
"My name is Madhu, by the way," he introduced himself with another winning smile. "I'm glad you are coming with me," he added sincerely. "Two is always better than one when it comes to hunting. Alone, I'd probably just catch a fat, waddling rabbit." He puffed his cheeks out and took a few steps in a wide, waddling stance, slanting a sideways look to see if she had relaxed at all with his antics. He really wasn't much of a comic, but he thought she looked like she could use a laugh.

She could appreciate his problem. Lions know she'd tried and tried to perfect her hunting technique. There wasn't anything he could do about his mane. Kakra nodded with sympathy. She eyed his messed up mane with a soft giggle. Somehow this lion was making her feel just a bit better. "Sounds like you need to find something that looks and waves like your mane does," she commented absently.
"I'm Kakra. It's nice to meet you Madhu." The lioness walked along side the male. It was an odd feeling going out hunting with someone else. Usually others got fed up with her inadequacies and left her hunt by herself. Here was someone who knew her problem and was willing to work with it. Now she laughed, softly, at his mimic of a fat rabbit. "I'd be lucky to catch a fat bug on my own, much less a rabbit. We could stick ears on you, and I could catch you." Her ears were up and her eyes warm with humor.
"I think this will work to both our advantages Madhu." Kakra commented on his hunting plan. It sounded alright to her. She could circle around whatever they found wide enough not to scare it until it was the right time. Then send it running for the muscled male to bring down.

It took some work, but their plan came to fruition. So well did it work, they contrived to try it again. The end result was that they had one small and one medium sized carcass to drag home. Madhu, however, was in no rush to hurry home. The last one had gotten a good kick to his chest, knocking the breath from him pretty solidly. He wasn't truly injured, but preferred to lay panting beside this latest kill. He looked up with a lopsided grin as Kakra came up. "This one went down fighting," he explained breathlessly, pausing to lick his muzzle free of blood. "I think it's time to rest, don't you?" His pleading look was nigh on comical, since obviously there was no moving him if he chose not to move. It wasn't as if he needed her permission, but he very clearly was asking for it anyway. "Come tell me about... your family," he invited, "while I catch my breath."

Kakra had sent the beasts running toward him in line with the plan. She ran up breathless to see they'd managed to get two. This was the best hunting she'd ever done. She gave a grateful purr, "thank you!" Hearing he got kicked she came over concerned. "Will you be alright?" Kakra settled beside him, and watched over him.
Her... family? The lioness looked away awkwardly. "They are far far from here." Her eyes strayed to their kills. Kills, as in two of them. Kakra wondered if perhaps he'd like to do this again another day. She would feel woefully better to be helping her pride instead of hindering. Even if she never made the kills herself, she helped Madhu.

His ears folded at the news. "Oh, I'm sorry," he said in plain consternation. His chest still hurt, but it was forgotten in seeing her sadness. "I'm lucky. My family is all here, with me." He gestured towards the pride while trying to think madly of how to fix his mistake. "Did you come here on your own, then? From the roguelands?" He rubbed the spot on his chest with one paw absently, though he really wasn't paying any attention to it. "I've never really considered leaving the Pridelands. It's too much my home. So many live here, and the land is so good and fertile." He gave her a smile. "The company on hunts is good too!" Though she claimed to be no good at hunting, perhaps it was only that she hadn't found the right role in a hunting party yet. Madhu knew that while the good hunters were capable on their own, lions still hunted better in groups.

She tried to smile for him. "I'm sure they are fine wherever they are. This is my new home." She'd been going through so many lately. Hopefully this would be the last move. "I'm glad you still have them around." Kakra nodded slowly. "I was suppose to join another pride with a male I'd left my family with. Things went downhill quickly and I was left on my own."
"It's good here. I wouldn't want to leave either." The tawny lioness gave a giggle, then a look of concern. "Thanks, this is the best hunt I think I've ever had. Will you be ok? I can carry the bigger kill if you think you can handle the other one." They needed to get these back before dogs or hyenas showed up.

She definitely had a point. He gave his chest a pat with his paw and surged to his paws, flexing his shoulders and moving his chest about. "I'll be fine," he replied manfully, puffing out his bruised chest to prove it. "I can carry the big one, don't worry." He paused then, gave her a sheepish look, and asked meekly, "That is, unless you really wanted to take the big one?" He did his best not to presume that males were superior, but he also was polite enough to always take the heavier load rather than leaving it to a female. It was a confusing role to have, as he could well have told.
Still, it all worked out. He took the carcass she had opted not to carry, willing to be of use however. It was nice to have company on the long walk home. By the time they reached home, he was weary, as she was too, no doubt! He gave her a smile and a soft chuff of familiarity. "We should go together next time. Let me know when your next shift is, and I'll come along." He turned to go, paused, and looked back to her. "And Kakra? I hope you do stay, and I hope you find happiness here. Y ou deserve it." With a parting smile, he padded off towards his den. It was clearly naptime!

The lioness tried not to giggle as he puffed up. She didn't want to hurt his feelings. Kakra tilted her head then nodded. "I'll take the big one as a thanks for hunting with me. Next time you can carry the big one!" She gave a laughing purr.
Picking up her burden with a firm grip she carried it back. Keeping an eye on him just in case he hurt himself further. Her neck was sore and her legs felt like heavy tree logs by the time they got back. Putting the carcass down a moment she gave a quick nod. "Sounds good. See you then Madhu. I think I will. I'm very happy here." She smiled as he left then went to deliver the food to the hungry.
