Ysalone’s mother, Laurel Regent, was the youngest of three daughters born to an old, old line of nobility stretching back to Sunderland’s infant years. As the name suggested, the Regents were once a powerful family that came close to ruling the nation, but had since faded into near obscurity. As the generations passed, the Regents became rich in history and little else, until Laurina’s father began to struggle just to maintain the family’s extravagant lifestyle and the vast properties littered throughout Sunderland’s countryside. He refused to find work, believing that members of his stature ought not stoop so low, and the family’s meager fortune dwindled even further until he was forced to sell all but four of his properties: one for each of his daughters’ dowries and one for himself.
Eventually, the elder Regent arranged a marriage for Laurel to the son of a rich Gallian lord who was influential in the wine-making province of Feroigne. The Jolivet family owned the largest vineyard in the province and had a reputation for being somewhat eccentric nobles.
The son, Alphonse, took and immediate liking to Laurel's fee nature and their household was filled with ringing laughter. Together the young lord and his wife had three children, Ysalone and her younger twin brothers, Sebastien and Severin.
Ysalone grew up running wild on their vineyard, stomping grapes in the summer and sipping wines at dinner. Her parents adopted a laissez-faire attitude toward her hobbies and games, and she spent much of her time chasing the sons and daughters of the household servants and grooms. As she grew, so did those relationships and many a summer day has set on her and some servant boy kissing in the woods or cuddling in the fields.
Although tradition dictates that the twins inherit the family fortune, Ysalone has always been her father's most greatest treasure. He is determined to find the perfect match for her, and as such is reaching far and wide for suitors and for opportunities to improve his daughter's assets.
The latest in his efforts includes sending Ysalone to his brother-in-law's estate to learn some of the finer arts of Sunderland's nobility.
Ysalone runs the house, and she knows it. With a smile, a pout, a wink, a sultry touch or a blown kiss she can get anything she wants, and she does. The art of flirtation is something she has down pat and it is a tool she uses often to manipulate others into getting her way. She seems to understand instinctively the way men are wired and uses that knowledge to her advantage. Feminine wiles are at her disposal, after all, and there is no man that she won't flirt with if it will get the desired results.
She takes after her mother - which perhaps explains her father's love for her - and has little regard for consequences. Trying new things and pushing acceptable social conduct into the scandalous excite and fascinate her, and that thrill of adrenaline after narrowly escaping discovery makes her feel alive. She tends to wind up in situations that could be detrimental to her reputation, and hardly ever seems to worry.
As befitting a lady of her rank, Ysalone loves to meddle. She is constantly on the prowl for juicy rumors and will gladly exchange one secret for another. For all that she enjoys this shallow talk and getting into other people's business, however, the hopeless romantic in her tends to get too involved and she often finds herself caring more than she needs to about the plights of others. This is a weakness that leads her to try to solve others' problems and shows that, at the end of the day, she really does love people and she really does care.
