Bars were one of Lila's favorite places. Sure, she was a few months too young, but a well-made fake ID and a little bit of flirting with the bouncer had her in the door and up to the bar. Now, she was engaged in her second favorite bar activity: winning free drinks from guys dazzled by her rack.
It was working pretty well, because she was sipping a martini and smiling over it at the dude that had bought it for her.
"Oh, honey, you're so sweet," she said, her voice simpering and sultry at the same time. He wouldn't get anything from her, but he didn't know that yet. And he seemed happy enough having a woman talk to him.

She had an audience, down the bar, settled in a seat with two empties next to him and a half-drunk vodka tonic between his fingers. This place was close to home, now, which meant when Zed was busy [often, these days] Ever could find his way down and have a chat with the bartender. With the very, very straight, definitely not a temptation bartender. No room for anyone to get annoyed. When he started recognizing people, it was probably a sign he came here too ofter; a solid two nights a week, a symptom of not having enough friends, nor enough hobbies to distract him. This girl, with her tumble of pink hair, he'd seen enough times that she'd become -- well -- familiar. A kindred soul. Just, well, one that had more fun than him. Great. So, he watched her; watched her entice in some sucker with a bat of her eyelashes, and not for the first time, and when she was done with that one he summoned the bartender over to send her a drink. It'd show up at her elbow with a paper umbrella shoved into it, fizzy and bright. The bartender's expression was amused as he tapped the bar beside it and leaned in close to make sure she could hear him -- "From the gentleman down that way. He said to make sure you know it's called a Jezebel."

Lila blinked and eyed the fizzy orange cocktail - and then she looked very, very amused when the bartender told her its name. That was both cute and creative. "Aw, I'll have to go thank him," she said, as she lifted it up to take a drink. Shot at her or not, it was a pretty good drink - fruity and tasty. She gave her admirer a simpering smile as she slid off her stool.
"I have to go thank the gentleman - it's only polite - but it's been lovely, sweetie," she said, and she walked down the bar to a seat next to the white-haired man who had been pointed out to her. She was still looking very thorougly amused as she pulled herself onto a stool next to him.
"A Jezebel, hm? That's actually pretty creative. Usually people open with a sex on the beach."

"That's because they usually are actually interested in ******** you." It could have been offensive -- it should have been offensive, probably. There was a mocking edge that was just the tiniest mean, but it came with such a bright flash of friendly smile, such a wickedly amused light behind his eyes, that it was obvious that he didn't quite mean it that way. Probably. He sipped his own drink, rotating on his own seat to look over her admirers, head tipped to consider some of their assets as they turned away from the duo. Surprising she'd turned them down. "Not that they have much of a chance, I don't think. All temptation with little follow-through..."

Lila laughed. Sure, he might have meant it a little meanly, but she chose to take it as a joke. "And you're not? That's refreshing." She said, sipping the drink. She meant it, too. As nice as it was to be able to lean on the bar and bat her eyelashes and be inundated with free drinks, a conversation with someone who wasn't staring down her shirt was nice too.
She blinked. "I don't owe them anything," she pointed out. "I made no promises. If they choose to think they can buy me with a few rounds of drinks...well." She shrugged. "That's all on them." She took another sip. "I set my bar a little higher than 'who's willing to spend the most money.'"

"You do it a lot." It was, at least, without judgement -- more amused than anything else, maybe primarily to let her know that Ever'd been there, and that he'd seen it before. Two or three times, at this point. He sipped at his own drink, eyes taking in the men down the bar. They looked jealous, at this point, and that made him grin despite himself, flashing them a wave. He was more interesting than them, at least. Ever'd take the compliment, whatever it meant. "Your strategy's off, though. The trick is to get in with the bartender." He smiled back at her instead. "Get him in your pocket."

Lila nodded, unconcerned with the potential that he might be judging her. She finished off the drink he'd bought for her and set the glass on the bar, and tilted her head to the side when he looked behind her. She half-turned to see, and had to stop herself from laughing. Oh no, her old group of admirers was not pleased she'd moved on.
She raised her eyebrows at his suggestion. "That's clever. Speaking from experience?" She asked.

"Uh huh, though I usually put out." This was said with the grin still on his face, Ever tipping back what was left of his drink in one long swallow. He slid the glass halfway out onto the bar, and the expression faded down some -- considering. Debating. "You play games like this a lot? I mean, do you also do that thing where you lean in over the counter to try and coax hapless cashiers into applying the employee discount to your order, too?" His eyes flashed up onto her face, genuinely curious about the answer.

"I put out plenty often, I'll have you know." Lila said. It wasn't normally something to be proud of, she supposed, but she wasn't all tease. She nodded in acknowledgement that this wasn't the only little game she played.
"Cashiers, waiters...if you've got it, flaunt it, no?" She said. It seemed natural enough to her. Why waste perfectly good God-given assets?

"Do you have any actual substance or is it just all style and batting eyelashes?" He couldn't help the tone, the note in the back of his voice, couldn't resist the desire to get a bit under her skin. While he waited for her answer, he tapped fingers against the rib of his glass, hunting for more alcohol. Always. "Do you have any skills that dip deeper than the surface?"

"I'm a Psychology major, precious, I'm plenty smart, if that's what you're asking," Lila said, but she still seemed plenty amused. "Never mind that I work out an hour every day; I could probably flip most of the people here over my shoulder if I had to!" It was said lightly, as a joke, but she did mean it. She might look delicate; she knew she gave off that air, to a degree; but she did not actually need to be protected.
"I have a little substance, I promise. I'm not all perfect rack and pretty eyes."

He could have teased further; there was a flicker across his eyes that meant he wanted to add something else, some other taunt. Instead, though, he was quiet, turning his glass against the bar and watching her with his head tipped to the side. Something about the expression that settled, calmer, across his face -- well, it made it clear this was an interview, perhaps, though an interview for what -- "Do you have a job?" Ever fished out a piece of ice to crunch between his teeth.

Lila shifted a little. This was not typical bar chatter - he wasn't flirting with her, that had already been established, but this went way beyond that. He was evaluating her, but for what was completely beyond her. She narrowed her eyes slightly.
"Not right now," she replied. "I had a job over the summer, but they weren't willing to be flexible for my school schedule and my manager was a jackass, so I quit."

"I'm going to offer you a job, but it's kind of a one-shot deal. No time to think. You have to take it." Ever sat back, finally, thinking for a moment -- and then left a couple horribly crumpled bills on the counter in front of him and stood, rolling out his shoulders. Sitting, he hadn't seemed that tall. Standing, it was potentially surprising; just over six-feet, and skinny enough to make it seem taller. "Meet me out back in twenty minutes if you're interested." He flashed her a smile, but behind it, his eyes were very serious.

Lila raised her eyebrows at him. "One-time offer, huh?" She asked, leaning back against the bar. Well, this was interesting. This whole thing was interesting, of course, but this was especially so.
"See you in twenty, sweetie," she said, smiling back at him. This was going to be a very interesting night.
