The moment he stepped through the portal a group of Life Techs started to stir, all of them focused on what would come back out. When Roland himself arrived in a white coat splattered with blood there was a quick debate to who's blood it was before the verdict was reached in the betting pool that he didn't lose to what ever he fought, that he didn't die, that he might have killed something, and someone won the bonus pool of 'he was going to get in a lot of trouble for this' round.
Roland on the other hand finally noticed just how much of a mess mindflayer blood made and was quickly removing his coat and stripping a few pockets of things he would need to keep on him after he finished tossing the jacket on the ground.
"Augh... I need a new coat now... And why does it smell like flowers?" He squinted at the jacket on the floor before sniffing his wrist which had a spot of blood on it. Yes. It was Lavenders. Roland was now somewhat confused.

Candace was waiting.
She had gotten Stormy's text and she was pissed.
She stood with her arms crossed, her eyes narrowed, her mouth set in a firm line. Her posture alone screamed disapproval and irritation, but the Mist huntress was silent.
She took out her phone, scrolled through it a moment, and then cleared her throat.
"Date, July eleventh. Sent to all Mist trainees. The message reads: And do not go to the Haunted House alone. Ever." Narrowed eyes turned up from her phone screen to Roland.
Yes. Someone was in a lot of ******** trouble.

Roland looked up as Candace cleared her throat, he was still standing on the portal platform a few steps up from Candace, even if he was taller then she had a way of making him feel like he was the one down there and the smaller one.
"I'm going to hazard a guess, July Eleventh was when Nevada went into a coma from what ever was inside that house." He removed the last set of bandages from his coat before dropping it to the ground still standing at the top of the steps a safe distance from Candace.
"I didn't plan on making the same mistake she did. But I had to try and find something to explain what did happen to her."

Candace looked ready to slap Ro at first. "No, Ro. That is the day I sent a very clear order that Mist trainees are not to go into the haunted house alone. I sent it to every Mist trainee. Unless your phone is dead, you got the same text." This was ridiculous. He seriously thought she would accept this? He was ******** covered in blood for christ's sake! She had been clear! No! Was any of that blood his!? She actually laughed when he said he wouldn't make the same mistake as Nevada. "And the other Hunters? What mistakes did they make? I gave an order, Ro. I don't care what your reasons were." She would be doing this for anyone. Stormy, Molly, Sydney. Any of them would be getting this. "When she wakes up she and I are having a talk. That is the smartest, easiest way to find out what happened. You don't just ******** go off on your own when you don't even know what of who the ******** you're looking for." Candace knew she was being harsh, but she was just so angry. Why? Why couldn't he have ******** listened? Was it some manly way of proving himself? Was he just stupid? Did he think he was exempt? I was as insulting as it was just upsetting. He could have been hurt or worse, he could have been brought back in the same state as Nevada.

He almost stepped back from Candace, almost. He figured he couldn't run anywhere anyway so he stood his ground as she spoke. "I got the message, I know. I know I didn't follow and order." He froze at the comment of the other hunthers. There was no tactful answer to that. None what so ever and his shoulder started to sag where he stood.
"Alright, it was a stupid idea, I didn't find what it was, I don't know if I ever well but it was doing something besides sitting on the island waiting for her to wake up and letting my weapon hurt people in a spar all the time."

Something to do other than--really?! "...Roland..if you want something to do, ask me. I am here to train you and mentor you. If you want me to give you something to do, ask."
She rubbed her temples with an irritated sound. Candace had never wanted to hit a Mist before. This was a new one. "What is this about hurting people in spars?"

Roland looked to the side avoiding Candace's gaze, he'd done plenty of work, had plenty more to do. It was something else, it was the desire to strike back at something because of what they did to Nevada, it didn't matter who or how, it was a desire to act and act irrationally at that.
Still he had to look back at her and explain Sylvia, "Her new charge, it had a bad habit of spilling over. I couldn't hold it. I sparred Tuck, it took out my shield and sent him limping to the labs. It's done stuff like that ever since till recently."
He didn't add that had it gone off in the house he would have likely torn himself and Riley into pieces.

Candace wasn't sure what to tell Roland about his charge. The only thing he could do was train with that, gain control over it and perfect it. "...Rep would be better help with that than I would be, he had problems with his charge for awhile.." She pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed, closing her eyes and counting to ten. The urge to hit him was so strong. She was so angry over what he had done.
"Whose blood is that, Ro?" Candace asked with impressive calmness, a hand on her hip and her hand covering her eyes, her head bowed. If she looked at him she would hit him. She had to not look at him.

Roland only nodded at her advice to talk to Rep, so far at least things where getting better. At least they where for the time being, only time would tell next time he tried to use her.
When it came to the blood he took another look at his coat on the ground before looking at Candace again, "Mindflayer." He moved to pick the jacket up proper folding it over to keep the blood away from himself. "I'm fine. She only scratched my shield. She...." He paused, "I kind of chopped her head off."

A...
A...
Atropos cackled loudly. OH SWEET JACK SHE MUST HAVE BEEN SO PISSED AHAHAHA BEAT BY A SMALL HUNTER TRAINEE PFFTAHAHAHAHA OH BOIL I WISH I COULD'VE SEEN THAT!
Candace's hands buried in her hair on either side of her hair, her eyes wide with a mixture of fury, panic, impressed but mostly what the ********>. "A Mindflayer?! Of ALL THE THINGS? A <********>?! Ro! Wha..what the ********! She could have ******** killed you!" She wanted to scream. Candace wanted to shout and know why the hell her Mists kept doing this to her. Why did they keep needlessly risking their lives? During a mission was one thing but when there wasn't even..god! What the ******** paced, rubbing her face with both hands. "Don't get me wrong, I'm really ******** impressed you chopped the head off a mindflayer without getting yourself mangled in the process, but really?! What is wrong with you? Did it never cross your mind perhaps the better, smarter option would have been to pendant out the second you saw a big tall tentacled monster?"

Roland wasn't sure if he should be proud, terrified or something in between, he settled for confused at the way she was looking at him. Sadly he couldn't hear Atropos cackling and cheering him on in a way. He could have used the slightly more positive support of the weapon right now.
"Yeah, a mindflayer. I mean, she tried to kill me before. It didn't work out." He shrugged a bit, "She wanted to keep me as a umm pet. Previously. I don't think that offer is going to stand for much longer."
He stood still atop the steps watching Candace pace, like a ball in a tennis match back and forth. "It... did, running. It also presented a chance to use Sylvia and not need to hold back for fear of hurting someone other then myself at most." He frowned a bit, "I know you're going to hate me saying this but... it felt good? To win? To hurt one of them after what happened...."

His logic was stupid. She could relate to it, she knew the feeling, she had even done it before, but that didn't make it any less stupid. Candace ruffled her hair and sighed heavily. What the hell was she going to do with him? This was the second time he had done something that frustrated her.
"You. We are going to spar." Candace's eyes narrowed. "I want to see this charge for myself. And Roland? Next time you want something to do, come to me," before you go on a suicide mission like some idiot hero wannabe. "I will let it go this time, but if I hear you've ever gone to the haunted house alone again I swear to god, Ro.." She would think of something.
He had never seen Candace angry, and Ro still hadn't seen Candace angry.

Roland stood by, watching Candace closely. Her face painted a pretty clear picture and that picture was still a very strong 'you are an idiot Roland Taft' and something possibly suggesting she might hit him here and now.
When she spoke he seemed to jump a bit, standing a tad straighter as she gave out her ultimatum. "Yes ma'am." Was his response. To just about everything, he would agree to the spar, he agreed to not entering the house and just about any other unspoken threat or promise made in that moment.
He hadn't seen angry, he hoped he didn't screw up and see it soon.
"I um, I'll wait for your call regarding the spar."

Good. He wasn't giving her any stupid arguments and excuses. She would have gotten a lot more annoyed if he had said anything more than "yes, ma'am" to her just then. She relaxed slightly.
"Good. Go clean up, you're a mess." Candace waved a hand, dismissing him before she herself turned to leave. She paused at the door, looking over her shoulder at the boy with a small frown. "I'm glad you're okay...don't worry me like that again, okay?" It was a running joke that she thought of the Mists as her babies.
It was true. She worried for each and every one of them.
She turned away, still frowning. Maybe she coddled them too much. She just didn't want them getting hurt.
Candace would need to find ways to teach them to be self-reliant.
