Personality: Koetsu is a respectful man, careful and considerate of his friends and comrades. He is a firm believer in the philosophy of choice, and because of that he never gives up on people because he believes that they have the choice to do better and be better. He actively chooses not to speak unless required to, such as delivering important words or communicating with his Zanpakuto, Shoujin. He is very devoted to his vow of blindness for life, as he rarely ever takes off the headband covering his eyes; when he does, he never opens them no matter what. He believes promises are something to always keep and those who break promises are simply despicable. He enjoys the quiet sounds of nature, and is appreciative of the voices of others due to his lack of vision. It takes a lot to convince him to speak more than he does normally, and this stems from history back when he was a living soul. He has qualms about fighting those weaker than him unless it is training of some sort; even so he is always hesitant to hurt a friend. He enjoys battling, but is not a naturally violent person. He feels uncomfortable around the Onmitsukidō. Koetsu responds to being spoken to with nods and hand gestures.

Biography: When he was alive, Koetsu was an excellent college student about to enjoy his second year of college. He had a close friend, a best friend, someone he considered a brother, who grew up with him and guided him and vice-versa. His friend had emotional issues, and Koetsu would always be there to help and console him into feeling better. One day, his friend snapped. He hit a low that ended up taking him to the edge of his life, and he threatened suicide more seriously than ever before. Koetsu tried everything he could; talking him down, convincing him to live on, putting himself in his friend’s shoes, everything. Nothing convinced his friend to live, and when he had gone to check up on him later that day, his friend was gone. He was stricken with grief, guilt, and despair over everything being his fault, blaming himself for not trying harder to convince him. He entered a deep depression himself and killed himself three days afterwards.
When he died, his soul had lingered around his body, still sorrowful for the events that had just transpired. He attempted to move on, just enough so that he could move on to the afterlife, when he found out what fate had awaited him. Death at his own hand had condemned him to hell. The huge skeletal doors appeared in front of him, ready to claim him; a shinigami then appeared and performed Konso on him, sending him to soul society. He awoke in rukongai wondering what had happened, before immediately remembering what he blamed himself for in the human world. He took a personal vow and promise of blindness in honor of his friend, and to relieve himself of the constant guilt that he felt.
He lived in Rukongai for many years, honing his senses and training with a wooden sword to practice his swordsmanship. He wanted to become a shinigami, as it was one who saved him from Hell. Eventually joining the academy, he had graduated within a year but decided to stay around the academy longer in order to further hone his skills and get used to his self-induced blindess.
A few years later he would apply for captaincy within the Gotei 13.

Shikai Command: “Project through the heavens, Shoujin…”
Shikai Description: Visually, not much of Shoujin changes aside from the blade lengthening by half a foot and a silver tassel ending in a metal ring sprouting from the bottom of the handle. The entire weapon adopts a dim but visible silver glow, more easily seen near the handle and tsuba of the katana. Shoujin controls sound, and as such carries several sound based techniques within its arsenal. Whenever the blade is moved, it produces a shrill whistling sound (かんだかい; Kandakai) that increases in volume proportionally to the amount of speed and strength involved with the movement, ranging from one foot around him at the lowest and three yards at the highest. Koetsu is unaffected by the sound, as he does not hear it due to constantly gripping Shoujin once it is released. The whistling sound isn’t strong enough to damage an opponent’s eardrums, and is in fact used to discombobulate or disorient an opponent. If his blade comes in contact with another weapon for more than a few seconds, a reverberating chime resonates through Shoujin to the opponent and very briefly causes muscle spasm through the resulting vibrations, possibly causing his opponent to leave themselves open. This is his basic Shikai ability, and the effect is negated when Koetsu is using one of his Shikai techniques. Kandakai resumes when an attack is complete.
Shikai Abilities:
“Hum (はおと; Haoto), Shoujin…”
Koetsu places his left hand on the hilt of Shoujin, and whispers the command before tapping the back of the blade twice with his index and middle fingers. The taps carry throughout the entire blade, focusing into a constant low humming that increases the visibility of the silver glow around Shoujin. The constant humming increases the zanpakuto’s cutting power, as the blade is now vibrating due to the resonating taps of Koetsu. The effect lasts a full minute (the post it is activated); or for at least three strikes against a surface before it dissipates. Shoujin can also project its vibration through stabbing, at which point it will lose its effect much faster. The vibrating blade cannot cut through other zanpakuto, as colliding with one will cause Shoujin to lose its humming vibration as it leaves his blade and travels into whatever weapon he collides with. The traveling vibration will simply shake the weapon and its wielder before dissipating, again to create an opening in his opponent’s defenses. This ability cannot be used rapidly; Koetsu must wait a few minutes (one post after its deactivation) before being able to use it again.
“Shout (さけび; Sakebi), Shoujin…”
Koetsu’s only ranged Shikai technique. He brings the metal ring at the end of the tassel and taps it against the hilt, which causes Shoujin to focus its silver glow at the end of the blade. After saying the command, he fires a partially visible projectile made entirely from focused sound at the opponent. The attack (いっせい; Issei) flies somewhat fast, a few seconds (four or five) slower than the speed of a bullet. Issei is purely concussive force; the sound waves are packed tightly enough together that the impact feels like the strongest straight punch a boxer could manage, and as such getting hit by this attack will knock the breath out of the opponent. The attack is strong enough to rip though most of the bark of an ancient and strong tree. No matter the surface, the result is the same upon collision; a loud boom not unlike the sound of thunder is given off. Issei’s core is actually invisible, but it is surrounded by a silver glow, the same that rests around Shoujin once the Shikai is activated. This leaves Issei to be avoidable through little less than a keen eye. The attack has a maximum range of fifteen feet, any further and it dissipates into useless sound. Koetsu can launch Issei from his blade in two different ways. The first, more direct way, is by pointing the blade directly at a target, only used when Koetsu knows exactly where an opponent is. Due to the blade being level with the opponent, Issei flies in a straight line, like a bullet. The second way, used when there are multiple opponents or a singular opponent is moving too rapidly to pinpoint, is fired by slashing Shoujin in an arc, which causes Issei to fly in an arc as well. Koetsu can fire up to four before needing to wait a few minutes before firing more.
“Shriek (ひめい; Himei) , Shoujin…”
Shoujin’s defensive technique. Koetsu holds Shoujin into the air in front of himself, blade towards the ground, and yells the command. His loud voice flows into the blade itself, and it returns outwards five-fold, resulting in a large area of effect sound barrier with Koetsu as the point of origin. The barrier lasts for a few seconds before it dissipates away, and is not entirely visible unless the opponent was specifically looking for it. This technique is used to protect Koetsu from lesser projectile attacks and kido, specifically any Hado under #33 and any Bakudo under #30. Koetsu has to know that an attack is coming at him for him to be able to use this technique effectively, and as such, fast projectiles such as (Hado #4) Byakurai or (Bakudo #61) Rikujokoro render this technique useless. Must wait a few minutes (one post after activation) in order to use Himei again.

Bankai Description: Koetsu holds his zanpakuto horizontally in front of himself, hand sliding slowly from the base of his blade to the point, his hand covered in the same silver glow that accompanies the shikai. Once he reaches the tip, he utters the command, and Shoujin releases a deafening screech as Koetsu’s body disappears in vibrant silver light. Shoujin itself lengthens another half foot, and gains an additional two ring tassels at the bottom of the handle. Koetsu himself becomes encased in illustrious silver armor that covers his entire body except for his head, which has only turned his blindfold silver and extended its ends as if it were a scarf.
Mugen Shoujin amplifies the Shikai abilities twicefold and provides Koetsu with a defensive boost comparable to an Arrancar’s Hierro or a Quincy’s Blut Vene. The shrill whistling sound of the Shikai has become a wicked howl. (Similar to the sound produced when feedback happens with a microphone and a speaker) There is now a constant hum named Ikkansei (一貫性; Consistency) resonating through Koetsu’s armor, which vibrates it and creates a visible distortion around him. This constant vibration increases the power of his strikes (hakuda and zanjutsu) and causes his Shunpo to exert static sounds like an Arrancar’s Sonido. Sakebi can now be fired from his palms, and it increases in size and destructive capabilities; while Himei becomes faster to activate and can neutralize kido twice as much as in Shikai. Koetsu gains two more techniques once he activates his Bankai.
Bankai Abilities:
“Oto no ame…”( 音の雨; Rain of Sound)
Koetsu whispers the name and throws Shoujin into the sky, where it levitates mid-air and points itself to his opponent. By matching with the frequencies of the sounds that they make, Shoujin is able to aim itself accordingly and release huge missile shaped visible pulsations that crush whatever they hit with repeated sound waves. The pulsations sound like the sonar of a submarine. They have a range of 20 feet. The attack cannot home in on an opponent once it begins. It can be seen, so dodging is possible. Koetsu must focus while using this attack, so he is left vulnerable during its duration. He can also place his sword into the ground to use this attack, doing so instead releases huge shockwaves through the ground, made through vibrations. As the ground is a more difficult medium to travel through than the air, this variation of the technique only has a range of 15 feet, like Sakebi above.
"Howaitonoizu..." (ホワイトノイズ; White Noise)
Shoujin’s strongest technique, Koetsu focuses the constant sound vibrations of Mugen Shoujin into the palms of his hands, and thrusts them outwards at the air in front of him. Doing so creates a full body outline of Koetsu, made entirely out of noise and appearing smoky, wavering, and shimmering. The noise clone can replicate any of Shoujin’s other techniques, and is very much so an independent entity from Koetsu, due to it being Shoujin’s will itself. It doesn’t exactly have a physical form; physical attacks can’t harm it but in turn it cannot attack physically. Being attacked physically (blade or otherwise) causes the clone to dissipate into deafening reverb, where it will then reform back into its outline. Koetsu can fire his sound projectiles into the outline, where it will amplify the attack and fire it twofold at the opponent. This attack is excellent for strategic maneuvers, but the downside is that it only lasts for nine minutes (three posts) before it fades away and leaves Shoujin momentarily exhausted and Koetsu vulnerable. Koetsu can detonate the clone in order to crush everything around it within a fifteen foot radius, but the attack has obvious buildup and deactivates his Bankai whether it succeeds or fails. The technique is characterized by a constant buzzing noise.

Other Abilities: Many years of training and diligence have gifted Koetsu with the ability to resonate his spiritual pressure outwards in order to “see”, like the sonar of a submarine or the echolation of a bat. His reiatsu projects at its absolute lowest level, just enough “see” around himself but otherwise not high enough to be noticeable through unfocused senses. In other words, others would only feel Koetsu’s spiritual sonar if they were actively looking for his spiritual pressure. He also has honed the ability to recognize and search for other spiritual signatures, and has mastered this to the point where it’s always active without him needing to think about doing so. He excels in dark conditions, as he is not handicapped like those with sight would be. His hearing is impeccable, having lived as a soul without his sight for 100+ years; he has honed an increase in effectiveness of his hearing to make up for his lack of vision. He can hear faint breathing, the slightest of movements, and even heartbeats if he listens closely enough.
The weakness to Blind Koetsu’s “vision” is those individuals who can suppress their spiritual pressure completely and move silently as well. Rare is a shinigami who can do both, but there are those out there, such as the members and the captain of the Onmitsukidō. Koetsu is extremely vulnerable when you can get past both forms of detection that he has.
