Richard Moreau hated hospital visits, whether it be a friend, or for a family member, and most important, himself. It was a place of dead, dying, really sick, to those with superficial problems that could have likely been fixed by staying at home and not cluttering the emergency room floors with their pathetic prattle. Richard had been to the hospital more times than he was willing to admit, but at least this time he wouldn't be getting his stomach pumped... that in itself was a blessing of sorts.

He had powered down the moment they left the Rift and made it into the hospital's parking lot, and he waited for the lieutenant to do the same. He gave a heavy sigh, letting Amethyst see just how much teleporting himself and another took out of a poor captain when he leaned against him. They hadn't even stepped foot inside the hospital yet, but he could tell that the wait was going to be killer.

After all, they injured and killed a lot of civilians... "Figures, they send all of them here. So, Doctor, any tricks on getting me in a room in a timely manner or am I to accept my punishment by waiting like everyone else?"

He hoped he wouldn't see anyone he recognized here, but he wouldn't hold it past himself if his luck decided to take that turn. Just so long as he didn't see her, he'd be fine...

WOW, THIS ISN'T OVERDUE OR ANYTHING. I have no excuses...

Boaz had powered down as soon as they arrived at the hospital car park, looking around to ensure that the coast was clear and their powered identities hadn't been compromised before turning to give Richard his full attention. "It is the closest hospital from the carnival ground, though some of those who are less critically injured will be sent to the other nearby hospitals so that everyone can be attended to promptly."

An arm went across the other's shoulder, gentle yet steadfast as he supported the redhead and looked him over with concern. Was he about to go into shock from the bleeding? Granted that most of his wounds weren't that oozy, there was a remote chance that the other man could have taken a blunt trauma to his abdomen and was bleeding internally.

"I can probably get us a room to take care of your injuries in person once I've identified myself as a doctor with the hospital. But tell me, how're you holding up so far? Not feeling dizzy or as if you're about to faint I hope?" That should help him gauge just how much time he had in terms of leeway and also if he should get some form of imaging to ensure that the Negaverse didn't lose a fine officer such as Buddingtonite.

"Oh... oh well, I suppose that makes a lot of sense, given recent events..." Richard kept his doubts and fears to himself. After all, he didn't want to admit that the thought of being in the same hospital, with the same people he helped injure, would affect him. He had to remain strong, and firm, for Boaz's sake. He was his senior officer- what would he think if he admitted to feeling guilt for following orders?

Not that he felt any REAL guilt, at least not yet, but that was because they hadn't gone into the hospital's ER just yet. He was sure the feeling would hit once they got inside and he saw all the moaning and crying, but for now, he was determined to remain firm, a straight point for his fellow officer. Even when he was repulsed by the sight of his own blood...

Unaware of Boaz's medical knowledge and his concern, he was admittedly taken off guard when he asked him specific questions, and he let his cluelessness be seen as he thought about it for a moment. "Uh, not really? I mean, I'm bleeding still, but that's to be expected given how deep he dug in. Not dizzy, but not liking just how much blood is still pouring from it..."

Dizzy? About to faint? No, he felt well enough, but then a thought hit him, as they arrived in the ER. "Unless you want me to," he said in a whisper. "To get me in quicker? I can really ham it up, if you'd think it'd help..."

What they did in the name of the Negaverse that evening would be a question of morality for Boaz to tackle on his own another day. For now, he was preoccupied with his main priority of ensuring that Richard got the best medical care that the hospital and his training together could provide. Everything else could come much later. "Ah no. No. That won't be necessary."

He offered the redhead a smile, coughing lightly as he barely suppressed the chuckle that almost erupted from his throat at the other's offer to feign being more unwell than he actually was. "Not unless you want to be identified as a patient requiring urgent medical attention and have my colleagues attend to you as a result of that." He cautioned briefly as he helped ease him onto a wheelchair then proceeded to identify himself to one of the nurses and check if a private arrangement could be made for Richard on his behalf.

It wasn't long before the both of them were directed to one of the consultation rooms that had been temporarily converted into a treatment room in view of the sudden influx of patients requiring urgent attention. After wheeling Richard into it, Boaz shut the door behind them then turned to him. "So... you think you're able to handle getting onto the gurney by yourself while I prepare the things that I need? How about an extra blanket?" He still had other questions for the senior officer of course but he figured that he would settle him down first before asking for the details of the earlier encounter. For all they both knew, that same blue-haired civilian could be lying somewhere in the Emergency department right about now.

Richard had an idea that something else was bothering his fellow officer and friend, but he wasn't quite sure what. The obvious answer would be the most recent affair involving the outright slaughter of who knows how many civilians, but that wasn't a topic they could discuss here. Maybe once his arm was sewn up and there were alone in a room they could bring this topic out into the open, but for now, he'd have to just roll with the punches.

He accepted the wheelchair with little fuss, and his objection was more or less showing the wound to his pride than anything else. "Alright, I'll tone down on the water works then, but you sure this is necessary? Not that I don't mind being carted around... just wouldn't want to be a bother to you, oh doctor."

Still, it was a free ride, and for that, Richard was certainly grateful. His feet were starting to hurt and his knees did feel a tad bit wobbly at times, so maybe it was for the best otherwise he'd stumble in and have another injury to worry about.

He had thought he was handling the situation well up to this point. Despite his own personal conflicts, he had to remain strong, for his junior officer. To Boaz, he had to be the straight point and a pillar for which he could depend on. But the sight of how many people were in the emergency room and their conditions... made him sick. He held back bile, as he addressed Boaz's concerns, hoping and almost praying that it didn't come out of his mouth. He kept his tone light and chipper, despite their surroundings and how he felt inside, as he answered, "I can get onto a gurney, yes. And an extra blanket sounds fine."

He actually hiccuped that last word in a last ditch effort to stop himself from vomiting, but surprisingly enough, it stayed down. However, he had to resort to practically welding his lips shut, just in case. He just wanted to get these stitches and get out of here, before he saw a face he recognized.

The emergency room was like a war zone with the number of injured on the gurneys with more still coming in with every ambulance that pulled into the driveway. It looked set to be a long night and Boaz had every intention of getting Richard out of the hospital as soon as he was done closing his wound and observing for a bit to ensure that the bleeding had stopped.

He had taken the most direct route to the consultation room, wheeling the older redhead as quickly as he was reasonably allowed to without inadvertently causing him more harm but he could see that the damage was already done when he saw the other's almost ashen face the moment they were alone within the privacy afforded by the consultation room that was allocated to them. In fact, poor Richard looked as if he was about to keel over and empty his stomach contents almost any time now.

Changing his mind about letting the other transfer himself onto the gurney from the wheelchair, he walked over to his uninjured side, offering him a small smile as he first tugged his arm over his own shoulder then slipped his arm around the other's waist to grab onto the waistband of his pants, letting him lean on him if he wished to while he helped ease him onto the gurney proper. "Alright. There you go."

Pulling the blanket over the older man much alike a mother tucking her child in bed, he slid open one of the drawers to retrieve a paper bag, puffing it up before handing it to Richard with a loose explanation as to its intended purpose. "If you need to, use this. It's just the two of us here so there's no need to hold back." Patting the older redhead a few times on the back, he gave the man some privacy to use the bag if need be, fetching him another blanket before moving to the procedure trolley to begin setting up what he needed for the task at hand.

"Before I start, is there anything I can get you to help make you more comfortable? Something for the pain or to help you relax perhaps?" He wasn't entirely opposed to sedating Richard if he felt that it would be better overall for his psyche but he thought that he should still offer the other a choice rather than force the decision upon him under the pretext of acting in his best interests.

Richard wasn't screamish, or at least he'd be the type to swear up and down that he wasn't. He could sit through the worst kind of horror movies and not bat an eyelash, but that was because he knew it was fake. It wasn't real. It was fake bodies and special effects and sometimes really bad acting, but it wasn't real, and he could look at movies like Saw and Hostel and not be bothered by it. But this... wasn't the same. It was real, and with no uniform to hide behind and no general above him shouting orders, there was nothing to stop the realization of what he had done. That he had a hand in these people's suffering...

Nothing expect the need to remain strong for his junior officer. Despite the ashen tint of his face, he wanted to refuse the paper bag that was offered to him, appreciating the sentiment but truly not wanting to allow himself the chance to vomit. No, that would only make matters worse, and be awkward as hell. "I am fine," he said, trying to cover his disdain with overly dramatic snark, even as he eventually accepted the paper bag as well as his assistance. It wasn't long before he was on the gurney, and lying down didn't help nearly as much as he was hoping it would, but still, he held it back.

However, as much as he refused the chance to release the contents of his stomach, he did jump at the chance for medication, and he was quick to suggest something for his nerves. "However, if you can give me something to calm my nerves... look at this hand, shaking more than a chihuahua left in the cold! That's all I need, please... you don't need to baby me!"

Not that he opposed such a thing, really, and if it kept his mind off of the suffering of others, he'd take it. He could only wonder, though... if he was taking his actions like this, then how was Boaz doing? Once they were in the room, stitches tightly fastened around his wound, he'd push the subject. For now, he'd play the role of the drama queen, if only to keep both of them distracted from events going on around them.

Unless Boaz was truly mistaken about Richard and the redhead was actually a serial killer or an assassin for hire under the guise of a chipper candy shop owner by day, he had to give the man due credit for being very very brave if his only reaction to the sight of all the injured people who were brought in as a result of something that the both of them had a part, either directly or indirectly, in causing was going to be just the visible quivering of his hands alone.

He took some comfort in the fact that Richard seemed to have the insight as to how much this was affecting him and jumped at the opportunity to be sedated even if it was only a temporizing measure at best until he had the opportunity to come to terms with whatever was weighing heavily on his mind and psyche. At least that was one less matter that he needed to concern himself with while he worked on first cleaning up the older man's wound proper before putting in the necessary number of stitches to aid his recovery.

"Gladly. I'm just going to set up an IV for that and give you some antibiotics at the same time so that it doesn't get infected and affect your recovery subsequently." He informed Richard as he reached for his arm, tying the tourniquet before he turned to the trolley to fetch the needle. "Just a slight p***k now so please bear with me here..." He cooed gently before going on to performing what needed to be done with practiced ease.

[Time skip]

Everything was too loud and too bright. Hafwen rubbed at her eyes and sighed, not at all liking the corner of the observation area that she was wheeled into just because the doctor wanted to watch her for a period of time to ensure that she did not develop any complications as a result of the concussion she had sustained after taking that rather nasty hit to her head from jumping off the still moving roller coaster. She was tired, cold and hungry but she wasn't allowed to sleep or eat anything save for the occasional sips of water, which was just plain torture for her since she had no idea at all as to how much longer she was going to have to put up with this.

Tugging the blanket up to the base of her neck, she turned her head to regard the person in the adjacent gurney, having had to close her eyes momentarily to allow the dizzy spell to pass before she could look over the older redhead male another time to confirm who she thought she saw. "... Mr Richard?"

Richard didn't mind the feeling of being coddled, but he didn't quite like the situation he was in. He wanted to complain but he couldn't. It was sensitive and confidential material for starters, and secondly, it wasn't fair for Boaz to have to deal with it. He suspected that his comrade and friend was taking this whole mess much harder than he truly let on, so to throw more onto his shoulders when he was already doing him such a favor... Richard was selfish, but he wasn't entirely heartless. Though now, he sort of wished the latter was true. It would have definitely helped him get through this.

For now, he'd just have to rely on the sedatives and have faith that Boaz would treat his wound quickly and with care. The sooner he was stitched up, the sooner they could get out of here and discuss this, alone, like grown men! Grown men that helped hurt and murder many innocent people... He gave a fake whine when the needle went through, hoping that his attempt at humor would help relieve the tension that was threatening to drown them all. "Oh, no, not needles! Dreadful needles! Be gentle with me..."

He had zero tolerence to pain, having never received any serious injury before in his younger years, so he was certain that his tensing up and wincing made him look quite pathetic in Boaz's eyes. Here was a grown man, forcing himself to look away from the deed, even with the sedatives being pumped into him. He was going to ask if Boaz could up the dosage by a tiny bit, but a soft voice caught his attention, and Richard looked to the young girl that was pulled into the room with them. His red eyes went wide, and he was surprised he had managed to keep his voice at a reasonable volume, as he addressed her.

"Hafwen, what on earth are you doing in here?" Richard may have looked only partially surprised on the outside, but he grew unimaginably tense, and he locked his muscles tight, to stop himself from shaking or trying to bolt out of the door. What kind of stupid question was that? He knew EXACTLY why she was in here! "I was eager to see you again, but never under these circumstances!"

Putting the last stitch into Richard's arm before tying the knot to secure it, Boaz allowed a small smile to cross his face, pleased with how it had turned out eventually. The older redhead would require a course of antibiotics on top of the usual painkillers to keep him comfortable during his recovery period and he could see him in the clinic in a week or so when the stitches needed to come out.

All that remained was to take care of the paperwork, come up with a plausible scenario to account for his sustained injury and get him some meds before they were good to go. "I'm all done here. Try not to swing your arm around too much or you might rip the stitches and reopen the wound." He advised when the older male's question drew his attention to the person in the adjacent gurney and that was about when he felt as if his heart had stopped.

Really? Of all the patients who were brought into the Emergency Department, she had to end up right next to Richard?

He observed the redhead for a bit, knowing that his current behaviour was a front for whatever he was going through right now. He would get him relocated elsewhere if he could but that option wasn't quite avail to him given how packed the Emergency Department was on this particular evening. Deciding that there was really nothing else he could do for him short of trying to get him out of the hospital as soon as possible, he patted the older man's forearm to get his attention so that he could inform him of his intentions. "Going to take care of the paperwork and get your prescription filled next. Be back in a bit..."

And then he was gone.

~~~~~~~~
"You jest... Knew that I could always count on you if I ever needed a good laugh." Hafwen gave the candy store owner a weak smile. It might be the hospital itself or something else entirely but something seemed a little off with Richard yet she couldn't quite put a finger to it. "I was at the carnival - on the roller coaster in fact when all hell broke loose. Took a nasty hit to the head so the doctor wants to watch me for a bit even though I keep telling them that I can handle myself fine."
She shifted a bit to make herself more comfortable, grimacing when her head didn't take to that too well with a fresh spike of pain accompanied by vertigo. Squeezing her eyes shut, she curled up on herself, trying to avoid making any sound to express her discomfort as she waited for the episode to pass. "So I guess I'm stuck here for a bit unfortunately. But what brought you all the way here?"
Richard's mind was hardly on the stitches, or the drugs that would soon be prescribed to him and how it may interfere with his little drinking hobby, nor the gratitous amounts of paperwork that was in store for both himself and his friends. No, this wasn't going to be fun at all, but Richard thought very little of these things now. Funny how other problems seemed to melt away when dealing with the new one that was blazing in the room with him. How many rooms did this hospital have and he was stuck in the one room with her?
Talk about rotten luck. And it seemingly got worse when Boaz took his leave, and as tempting as Richard was to grab him and politely requested to be moved, he kept the impulse down and merely gave Boaz a strained nod, the smile held none of its usual luster. He hoped Hafwen wouldn't have noticed, as he leaned back with a sigh. "Well, they say laughter's the best medicine... I figured now's a good a chance as any to put this theory to the test."
He mulled over her words, trying to put together a decent story to keep her off his trail. Maybe she wouldn't remember? Maybe he was overthinking this? Still, it was best to approach with caution, and he kept his voice low as he flashed her his freshly stitched arm. "Looks like we're victims of the same event, though... and of course you can handle yourself. There's no doubt about that."
He saw her grimace and swallowed down his guilt, and now would NOT have been a good time to remind her how lucky she was that all she had was a smaller injury compared to others... a few of which he had a direct hand in. Literally. He couldn't do much for her discomfort, considering he was the one that caused it, but he'd at least help keep her conscious and give her some company, perhaps as his own way of apologizing. "I got this while dealing with an unruly... er... monster, if that's what they're called. Don't worry, he's learned his lesson, I think."
"Only because you know me way better than they do. If they're going to wait till dad gets his a** here before releasing me... I'll probably be here the whole night and a good part of tomorrow too." Hafwen muttered, obviously in a sour mood at the prospect of being stuck at the hospital for far longer than she needed to for her concussion.
Richard would find that his worry had all been for naught for the only thing that she could remember from her earlier encounter with Buddingtonite was that the Negaverse Captain was injured though she had no idea as to where or how gravely wounded he was all thanks to the layers of the uniform that he wore. The sight of the stitches on the redhead's arm grossed the blue-haired teen a little and she made no attempt at hiding that, concern written all over her face when the extent of his injury actually hit her though there was not a sign of her making the connection between him and Buddingtonite as a result of it contrary to what he had feared initially.
"That... looks bad. Much worse than the bump I apparently have at the side of my head. I think. Does it hurt when they were stitching you up?" She paused for a bit, shifting into a more comfortable position before offering him a weak smile at his candid description of the horror that was the youma that he had to face. "... it's good to see you alive after what happened out there Mr Richard. I'll... miss your candy if anything bad were to happen to you..." She really meant what she said. He was lucky to survive an encounter with one of them when so many had succumbed back on the carnival grounds.
Outwardly, he appeared sincere and more passive about Hafwen's dilemma, but on the inside, his conscious kept trying to claw its way out of him and it reflected in the way his other hand, the one that rested on the other side of the bed and away from Hafwen's sight, dug into the sheets. He wore an apologetic smile, as he shook his head and sighed. "Unfortunately I left my car at my condo, otherwise I'd be more than happy to drive you home."
Which was a lie, because he walked to the Carnival with Nyasa, but he wouldn't dare dream of telling her that. But at least his injured arm distracted her from his dreading and the discomfort it was causing him, as he gave the injured limp a little wave, as if to show it off. Normally he'd never do that and would actually try to hide the wound from prying eyes, but anything to keep her preoccupied, or maybe it was to distract himself? "Now, now, there's no need to compare injuries... this isn't a contest, though if it was, I'd naturally win. These stitches weren't fun... but I'm told they itch while they're in and will tickle on their way out. We'll have to test this somedad, and soon, I hope... no one's going to want to date someone with stitchwork in their arms!"
Or maybe it'd get him pity sex. Something worth investigating later. For all his attempts to distract himself from the Carnival and their earlier confrontation, and the trouble that he was in, Hafwen found a way of pulling him back in, and he glanced towards the door, looking for Boaz and hoping that he would return... and soon, before his dirty conscious got the better of him.
"I'm not really lucky. I'm a coward, I think... but I guess it's something to be grateful for," Richard admitted, only part of his sudden modesty and self-loathing a farce. No, the emotions were sincere, but he merely exaggerated them. Slightly. "I've done some things I wasn't proud of this evening, but if it meant to stay alive to keep Sugar Shanty's doors open, I suppose I shouldn't be too ashamed. Likewise, I'm glad to see you're alive and well... for the most part."
"It's cool. I highly doubt the doctor will allow one soon to be ex-patient to send another patient home. Besides, you really shouldn't be driving in your current state." Hafwen chuckled softly at her own words, lightly chastising Richard for what, in her own opinion, was an irrational offer to drive her home when he himself was probably still doped up from the procedure that was performed for the wound he had sustained on his arm.
She paused to give a yawn, her head nodding a few times to indicate that she was still listening though her conscious level was starting to slip with her eyes drooping dangerously low a few times. "You'll have to tell me all about it the next time I drop by the Sugar Shanty. I have faith that you'll be able to find someone who'll dig the battle scar that that's going to leave. It's testimonial to your bravery after all." She smiled, yawning again as she gave in to the urge to doze off, content with the fact that the older redhead beside her seemed to be in good spirit and well in spite of everything that they both had to face earlier in the evening with the Negaverse and the youmas.
"Cowardice or not... there's no point to it all... if you don't survive the entire... ordeal... ..."
~~~~~~~~
Just as Hafwen began to drift off and spare Richard from anymore agony that she was unwittingly causing him on her part, Boaz returned shortly with a bag of medication in hand and an apologetic look on his face. "Didn't mean to be gone for so long but it's a war zone out there with the people and all. Sorry..." He really didn't mean to walk out on the older redhead like that, thinking it best that he spent the time more productively by working on getting him out as soon as possible after he was done with stitching up his arm proper.

A casual glance at the now unconscious blue-haired teen had him frowning since she really shouldn't be allowed to nod off like that with her head injury and all, but he crossed over to Richard's side to look him over, his concern over his wellbeing evident as he tried to gauge how his period of absence and presumably whatever verbal exchange had passed between he and Hafwen both might have an effect on his psyche. "Paperwork's done. Got some really strong meds that'll knock you off your feet and keep the stitches from bothering you as you mend over the next few days."

Gently prodding the wound to check that the bleeding had stopped entirely, he retrieved a waterproof dressing from where he had left it earlier on the procedure trolley, covering it up so that it was now entirely out of sight before he moved to lower the side rail of the gurney that the older redhead was on. "Think you're good to start heading out of here? Not feeling queasy or lightheaded are you?" He could alert the nurse of Hafwen's condition on the way out. No sense in doing so now in person and risk traumatizing Richard any further.

Richard's frown was clear to see, and it wasn't a farse. It was a true grimace, and while he couldn't deny her statement, nor the growing effects of the drugs that Boaz so graciously supplied him, he was still a little hurt that she turned down his offer. Part of him wanted to just stop talking and let her sleep, if that's how she was going to act, but for Richard not to talk was an impossible feat, and that was something that he just couldn't deny or resist. As shunned as he felt earlier about her declination for a ride, he did feel somewhat better at her compliment, and he gave a faux-bashful smile as he looked over the gruesome but nicely crafted stitches. "Hm... perhaps. Some ladies love a man with scars... not so sure about the act of bravery, but I'll leave it for them to decide."

He did look forward to her next visit, though, and his concern for her, though brief, when she started to slip away, was genuine. He looked to Boaz as he returned, hoping that his comrade and friend hadn't overheard anything and he certainly played it off like he didn't. "Oh, don't mind me. I could have waited a little longer. No rush!"

Especially now that she was unconscious and that alone was a great weight off his mind. With only Boaz there, he allowed for some of his bravado to drop so that the blonde could see some of that inner turmoil, not at all realizing that he wasn't the only one with such emotions. "Thank you, Boaz. You did a good job tonight with taking care of me, and I'm sorry to have burdened you with it. You'll find it in your heart for forgive me, I hope?"

Then, even though Hafwen had drifted off into what looked like a deep sleep, he added softly, pulling himself off of the gurney and wanting nothing more than to just book it out of this hospital and the unwelcome sensation that churned within him while being there. "I'll be fine after a few doses of this stuff. But, Boaz... I must ask before we go, and you can be completely honest with me. But you can't tell anyone else, not even our superiors. This whole attack... what do you think it'll do? In the long run?"

Yes, it was completely improper and unorthodox for a senior officer, if only by a single rank, to ask a subordinate such a question, but with no one there and with Hafwen unconscious, Richard could not stop the question from being asked. He knew how it'd make him look and if there was any doubt in Boaz's mind than he most likely caused it to flourish even more, but it could not be silenced. He had to know Boaz's opinion...
