Tourmaline sat high in the branches of one of the trees, a peaceful smile on her face as she watched the clouds pass by. Closing her eyes for a moment, she lifted her arms high above her head and stretched herself out. All day she had been lazy, and as a result she was tired for no reason, though the warm sun on her skin probably wasn't much of a help. Still, she really did need to start thinking about what she would bring back for dinner; it was that or she ate a dinner of dried meats, and she really didn't feel like having such a chewy meal at the moment.
Letting out a sigh, she stretched out her wings and prepared to take to the air.

Anahira had been walking through the outskirts of the forests, looking for some trouble to cause. So far, he hadn't found any, but that didn't stop him from looking. He was almost to the edge of the trees when he spotted a purple and green demon stretching her wings in the heights of a tree.
He grinned, flicking his tail back and forth. There was someone to antagonize.
"Hello up there!" Anahira attempted to pitch his voice to make it sound much friendlier.

The sound of a friendly voice floated up to Tourmaline's ears and she looked around. Finding the source of the voice, she smiled and waved at the male, then slipped into the air. Using her wings like parachutes, she glided down to a few feet away from the new Pae, a friendly smile on her face.
Looking from side to side, she walked over to a tree and snapped off a long, thin branch to use in order to draw on the ground to try to aid in communication. Pressing a hand to her chest to indicate herself, she slowly mouthed her name. Not a sound came out.

His head tilted as she glided down. Not a peep even. He smirked a bit, wondering exactly why she wasn't able to speak. Then again, he really didn't care. Anahira wasn't a nice pae, he was an a** and he knew it.
He looked at her confused when she mouthed what he assumed was her name. Okay, he'd not run across that before. But that's also not saying much since he didn't get out too much. "I don't understand?" He asked, looking at her like she was a little insane.

With pursed lips, she snorted a little, crossing her arms as she thought. Touching her fingertips to her throat, she flipped her hand outwards to indicate a projection of her voice, then shook her head as she tried to get across that she didn't speak.
Deciding to try to get his name, Tourmaline pursed her lips and furrowed her brow as she pointed to him, the expression making her look as if she really where asking a question. She tilted her head to the side as she scratched the back of her head.

So she's a mute? Hira tilted his head to the side once more. "I'm Anahira." He offered, speaking to her as if she were just a little mentally retarded. She probably was, but he wasn't going to come out and say it outright.
"Spell your name?" The male asked, pointing to her stick.

As soon as Anahira mentioned that he could read, her eyes lit up in pure excitement. She had learned long ago when there was still access to books through the Head Quarters' library, but with the destruction of the building, it was difficult to find those that read here on the island.
Quickly, she scrawled letters facing him, and upside down to herself, in clean writing on the ground:
Tourmalin
It is wonderful to meet you, Anahira.
What brings you out this way today?
She paused in her writing and looked up at the new male, a warms smile on her face.

Anahira wasn't very good at reading. He never had much practice at it before the storm that destroyed the Head Quarters. When that happened, he realized it was really a useless talent. She wrote slow enough for him to get the letters. But putting them all into words? That was a different story.
Her name alone was difficult. "Tour-maaaaa-line?" He looked up at her, hoping he pronounced it properly. And she kept writing. Okay, she spelled his name right. That was almost a shock. Almost. And then what brought him this way. He took a moment to ponder that. He hoped to pass it off as trying to read everything she wrote.
"I was looking for food for my family. Why are you out here?

As he slowly pronounced her name, Tourmaline nodded her head enthusiastically to indicate that he had said it correctly. It didn't pass her notice that Anahira took a long time to read, and she decided that maybe it would be better for her to gesture than it would for her to keep writing things out. Underlining the TOUR in her name, she brought her hands together quickly and stopped with them close together to indicate that he could call her by a nickname.
As he answered, she nodded, watching him with and observant look. She pursed her lips together as she thought about how to explain what she was doing, then shrugged her shoulders. With a long stretch of her arms, she slowly moved them behind her head and closed her eyes, trying to express a lazy, relaxing day.

Anahira tilted his head a bit. Tour? That was her nickname. That was such a strange nickname. Maline sounded prettier. By far. "How about Maline?" He offered, looking at her curiously.
Okay, so she was enjoying a lazy day off. Who wouldn't? "Do you have a family?" He wondered if there was someone who would miss her if he took her.

At the mention of using the second half of her name, Tourmaline nodded; she didn't mind if he called her that. She knew her name was a bit of a mouthful, and considering she didn't even speak...
Did she have a family? Nodding, she paused, then frowned a bit and shrugged and shook her head. She had moved out long ago from her parents, and though she knew the location of her mother, she still wasn't sure where her father was. Deciding this needed clarification, she smoothed over what she'd written before and scribed something new.
I have a mother, but I don't know what became of my father.
I live on my own.
Do you live with your family?

Hira smirked, rubbing the spot between his nose and his mouth to hide it. He certainly didn't need her knowing he was happy to know she lived on her own.
"I did until a few seasons ago. Moved out to get away from my father." They didn't clash anymore. Sure, Phim had taught him a few interesting things, but he'd also tortured the living daylight out of Anahira's mother and Hira himself. Strangely, his sibling really hadn't been affected by Phim's horrible treatment. The male didn't really care though. He came out the way he was meant to turn out.
"Why did you move out?" He asked, curious.

Once more, Tourmaline smudged out her previous answer in order to make room for her next.
I grew too old.
She looked up at him and smiled, shrugging. It wasn't that she had wanted to, but more that she felt she needed to. Her parents had loved her with all their might, but she could feel the tension and worry they had over the fact that she couldn't speak. So she'd left.
She paused, then pointed at him with a questioning look on her face, asking him for his turn of an explanation.

He debated telling her the real answer, honestly considering it for a moment. No, she didn't need to know why he really left. "I was just tired of living with my parents." That was as close as she was going to get to the truth any time soon.
Hira reached out to take her hand. "Would you come with me somewhere?" He asked, only needing a nod or a shake of her head.

A sympathetic smile came over Tourmaline's face; she understood that feeling of needing to grow on your own. There was a reason why she hadn't gone back to live with her parents after she'd moved out. She liked the freedom of doing things herself, of not having to worry about being a constant reminder to her parents of their failure to get her to speak.
When Anahira reached for her hand, she let him take it, but tilted her head as she scratched onto the ground.
Where?
It wasn't that she wasn't curious... but she had just met the male. She knew absolutely nothing about him.
