This is a private rp between my Liliel and Oakley. No posting please.
((I am aware that Liliel's cert has a typo. It's okay.))

The days had always begun in a blaze of rich colors but today was somewhat different. Oakley's golden eyes watched the rising sun from the edge of the meadow that her family had spent the night in. Her mother's head still hung low while her sister and nephew slept on the ground. Out of the corner of ear she could make out the black blob that was her brother hanging around the outskirts. Her family was hardly interesting enough to hold her interest though. No, today it was the strange bloody color of the sky that held Oakley captive.

A western wind blew strong and Oakley inhaled deeply taking in the strange scents. It almost smelt sweet but at the same time it was sharp and made her nose wrinkle. She sneezed but the scent still lingered in her nostrils.

Oakley was a mare in body alone. Her mind was still that of a child, an older child fringing on adulthood but a child nonetheless. She had never before seen fire nor had she smelled smoke. Ash was an altogether foreign substance and just as strange to the young mare as the sight of the blood red sunrise. She lived far from humans so even their cooking fires would have shocked Oakley as she was.

Her mother could have explained everything but her mother did not enjoy waking and Oakley would not subject herself to her mother's scorn. She was much too good to be scolded. So, Oakley set her mind to locating the source of this strange scent. With a determined huff Oakley turned and trotted off westward. When she found the answer she would return.

Unlike the little mare from the plains Liliel knew exactly what fire was. She had been trained to recognize it and to harness it. She had learned how to feed it and douse it. She had learned to make it spread and where to set it so that it would cause the most damage. The young mazoku had not been sent out just to set fires though. No no. That was not work suitable for her. Her parents, grandparents, and lords had all recognized her talents and uses early on. While she could not fly with her stunted wings she could leap to astonishing heights and that, along with her claws, made her a fearsome predator. She had been sent out to hone those skills and was told not to return until she was sure that she could impress Lord Phibrizzo and Lord Beastmaster with what she had learned.

Today Liliel was using the fire in the west peaks to assist her. She had not set it but it was causing more creatures to pass her way. Some were fleeing the fire and other's were seeking to help put it out. Liliel was looking to put their bleeding hearts to work for her.

Liliel drummed her claws on the ground as slowly drew a line down a wolf's side with her spaded tail. It's legs had become trapped in a mysterious landslide and it couldn't quite reach her to bite with that stone on it's throat. It could still howl and bark though. It was spirit touched, she could tell by the way it screamed. She drew a few more lines for good measure before going to hide. The wolf wasn't her target. The wolf was her bait.

As the day wore on Oakley was discovering that she was still no closer to discovering the cause of the days oddities. What she did know was that the smell was becoming more persistent and sometimes stronger and the sky was not really it's normal shade of blue. It was like she was trying to look at it through her own golden hair. She had also recently discovered that she could hear something weakly calling for help. That sound had vanished shortly after Oakley had started toward it though. After taking a few steps she stopped. There was a pile of rocks that appeared to have fallen. Oakley frowned. Whatever had called her was likely trapped beneath the pile and there just wasn't anything she could do to help. It had stopped calling, it was probably dead anyway.

Telling herself all of these things made it surprisingly easy for Oakley to turn away from the fallen rocks to return to her quest for the strange scent. Lives were lost every day. It wasn't like anyone she knew had been trapped. Everyone she knew lived on the plains.

It had turned into a very long wait for Liliel. The wolf had cried and howled and begged until it's voice had gone hoarse. Still, nothing had come. When it seemed to give up she would give it another small cut and still nothing. Liliel abandoned her trap in favor of finding a new location. She snapped the creature's neck and was preparing to move the fur away so that she might eat when the sound of approach reached her.

Silently she cursed and retreated. She had not been patient enough. Liliel silenced herself to watch from a hidden location. The sounds of hooves stopped but she could not see her target. She waited again, the horse was probably being cautious, she would wait this time. It started walking and she smiled then snarled. It was moving away!

Liliel sprang into action and followed after as noiselessly as she could. Before long she spotted the golden mane and tail of another soquili. There was nothing special about her, just a mare. It wasn't much of a target to hunt, it would be just like killing that wolf. Steadying her heart Liliel forced herself to fall into the shadows and well out of sight. The mare could not know she was being hunted.

Oakley continued along the well beaten trail following her nose as best as she could. It was getting more difficult the way the scent was clogging the air and making it hard to breathe. The closer she seemed to get the harder her mission seemed to become. Her eyes began to sting and water from whatever was causing the air to lose its usual clarity. Then she saw it. Dancing along the crest of the mountain and steadily moving downward and outward there was a strange light. It was a light that clung to the branches of trees and crept up them like claws until their limbs were entirely engulfed. It was mystifying and magical. It gripped her in way nothing else had with its beauty. Yet somehow the longer she stood their watching the colder she felt and the faster her heart beat.

It was the distant cry of some distant strange that jarred her out of her stupor. Run! He said, not to her but she heard it all the same. Run. Her legs trembled as she wheeled about to flee back towards the plains. What she was observing was dangerous. Something deep inside her had been trying to tell her that all along but she hadn't listened. Her life was in danger and she needed to get out of there. Now.

Stalking the golden haired mare proved to be surprisingly easy. She was fixated on something in front of her and whatever it was was leading her into increasingly hazardous conditions. More then once Liliel considered turning back to pick a different target, one that wasn't going to take her straight into bad air like this one was intent on doing. Her own mission to improve her skills kept her trailing silently behind. If she was a bad enough hunter to die from smoke inhalation than she didn't deserve her blood right of being a mazoku. On the brighter side of things, the smoke that was making it hard to breathe and see would be affecting her target as well. Liliel wouldn't need to be as stealthy. There was no way the mare would ever be able to scent her in all of this. So long as Liliel kept out of the mare's line of sight she'd be absolutely fine.

Everything was going perfectly, Liliel hadn't been noticed and she was steadily gaining ground preparing herself for an attack. Perfectly, that was, until someone shouted "run" and the mare suddenly whipped around like a viper preparing to strike. Liliel was caught well off guard and simply stood still, stupidly squinting at the mare while her brain tried to catch up to what was going on. When it did she snarled and surged toward the mare with her wings fanned out at her sides to make her form look even larger.

Oakley was caught every bit as off guard as Liliel. She had not known that there was anyone behind her. Now that she knew that this area was dangerous she couldn't imagine why anyone would want to come out here. That would be stupid.

She narrowed her eyes at the strange purple mare with her platinum hair and taloned feet. She was an odd creature with stunted, twisted wings and a long spaded tail. There was nothing pretty about her. As Oakley opened her mouth to demand what the deformed mare wanted from her, however, the mare lunged.

Oakley shrieked and skittered away as quickly as she could. She felt something sharp graze her flank as she bolted to the side. The mare was one of those insane flesh eaters that Oakley had been warned about. An insane flesh eater that was after her. "Daddy!" Oakley wailed as she scrambled her way down the rocky trail trying to put space between her and the hunter behind her. If only her father were anywhere that he could hear her. The damn mare wouldn't last three minutes against him.

Liliel snarled. She had missed. If she had gotten even three steps closer before the mare had turned about Liliel would have had her in her clutches before the blonde cow could so much as squeak. Damn her luck. As Liliel came back around she caught sight of the mare scurrying back down the slope. The mare was fast but Liliel was quite certain that she was faster. Liliel roared ferociously (it seemed silly but it could make a frightened person into a complete wreck if used properly) before pursuing her prey down the mountain.

She could hear the girl calling for her father. It sent up a warning bell in her mind. She hadn't seen another like her anywhere in the vicinity but that didn't mean she could let her guard down. There were few things more terrifying than a parent protecting their children. Liliel needed to end this quickly.

Like a rabbit she darted into the trees that ran along the path. The trail was trickier here but it was just something she would have to deal with. The mare was on edge. If Liliel played her cards right she could scare the mare into tripping it. She started this plan by rustling every bush she passed by just to remind the mare that she was being followed.

It didn't really surprise Oakley that her father didn't appear out of nowhere to rescue her. He probably wasn't in the area but that didn't mean that no one was. She had been missing for quite some time now. Her mother had probably sent everyone out after her golden haired angel by now. Thorn only had so many children and she had always favored the ones that resembled their father most of all. Oakley was practically a female duplicate of Krad. Her mother would want her back as quickly as possible.

"Mommy!" She shouted. When she didn't get an immediate response she kept trying. It was hard to focus on names when the constant rustling sound behind her kept reminding her of what was coming. "Zareen! Phia! Cain! Ciar! Nexus! Karius! I'm over here! Please! I'm over here!" Tears were forming at the edges of Oakley's eyes. She was more scared than she'd ever been before. The smoke wasn't filling her nose as much now but she still couldn't smell anything. All she could do was run, hope, and listen to those awful bushes giving way wondering how close the hunter was now.

Oakley turned her head quickly in hopes of catching a glimpse of where the clawed mare was now. She came to a sudden stop when she realized the mare wasn't behind her at all anymore. Golden eyes widened as she backed up, her head turning in all directions looking for the demon. Oakley had been certain that the mare had been right behind her. She had heard all the bushes rustling.

Oakley stared back up the path that she had run down. There were no bushes on the path. Which meant the mare was...in the trees. Oakley swallowed and looked into the woods. She shouldn't have stopped running.

Liliel couldn't quite believe what she was hearing. The mare she was chasing came from a rather large family. Practically the same size as her own if she were to count her Lords as family. That or she had a lot of friends that were willing to risk life and limb for her. For a moment Liliel pulled further into the woods for more cover. If anyone was around to help Goldilocks she didn't want to be anywhere close to them until she knew what she was up against. A good hunter would kill anything no matter the cost but a great hunter knew to assess a situation before charging in. Liliel would be a great hunter.

She kept close enough that she could keep an eye on the mare as she ran but still far enough away that she could flee easily if needed. The mare stopped suddenly and Liliel came to a halt in the trees, her body tense. Had her target seen something. No. From the way she looked all over it seemed like she had heard something. Had someone called her? Liliel hadn't heard anything.

Liliel understood all at once when the mare's eyes settled on the woods right where Liliel was standing. She had finally figured out the trick. Well there was no reason to stay hiding if she figured it out. The mare was already bathing in her own fear but there was no reason why Liliel couldn't add to it further. Moving very slowly Liliel moved out of the shadows of the trees and back onto the path. "What's the matter dear? No one around to hear you?" Liliel cooed with a cold smile on her face. This was turning out to be quite a good training session.

This was how things were going to be, Oakley could tell already. She would run and the mare would follow. She would keep following until Oakley couldn't run anymore. Oakley was out of her league with this hunter. She was smaller and lacked any sort of protection or means of attack. Despite that and despite her fear Oakley was entirely unwilling to give up.

Something inside her snapped, her tears dried up and she scowled at the mare. "I don't think that even deserves an answer." Oakley countered haughtily. "What's the matter with you? Run out of good ideas so you decide to go chasing people through the woods?" It wasn't the best of comebacks but Oakley couldn't be bothered to care. She was busy circling to a better place on the path. If she could distract the mare long enough Oakley knew she'd be able to bolt again and hopefully find some help. There had to be someone left on the mountain that would be willing to help.

Liliel's eyebrows raised and her mouth formed a small o in shock. That was surprising behavior to be coming from one that had just been crying for her mother and father. Well that certainly explained why the mare had been heading towards a raging wildfire. She was mental.

"On the contrary, I think chasing is a wonderful idea." She said following the mare's steps closely to make sure she didn't get too far out of range. "Makes me feel very alive and you...less so." Liliel said with mock sympathy. Somewhere in the back of her mind she could hear something screaming at her to just take the chance to kill the golden mare. Liliel ignored it. There was no harm in enjoying herself for a bit. Even Lord Hellmaster toyed with those he would inevitably kill, why couldn't she do the same?

Oakley chose not to respond to the demon's last comment. She felt very alive at the moment. Perhaps it was just the way her heart was pounding or the indignity Oakley felt over being hunted but she felt more alive now than she had in all her years of life. She took a few more steps around noting how Liliel tracked her movements until a path to Oakley's side opened up. Oakley looked Liliel in her squinty, little eyes for a moment before smiling triumphantly. "I win." She taunted before racing off down the sideways path. She was no longer heading away from the fire but she'd run so far down the mountain Oakley couldn't imagine that she was anywhere near it.

Liliel watched slightly slack-jawed as the mare darted back into the forest down a narrow path. This, she imagined, was why her instincts had been calling for the mare's blood. Exasperated, Liliel rolled her eyes and took off down the path the mare had chosen.

It didn't take long for the mazoku mare to recognize that something was wrong. The smoke was starting to get thicker than it had been just moments ago. Liliel paused for a moment to look at the position of the sun through the trees, they were heading back towards the blaze. Liliel snarled and looked down the path, the mare really was touched in the head, she hadn't slowed down at all. Did she even realize that the air was getting bad again.

"Stop!" Liliel called taking a few steps forward surprised at how her own voice sounded almost concerned. It was funny how panicked the thought of losing her prey to something as all consuming as a fire made her.
