Akira was tired of sleeping on the couch. It wasn't as if he hadn't been provided with a bed upon moving in with his roommate, Taiji, but the brunet just wasn't accustomed to beds. His room had never had one growing up and he wasn't comfortable on one now.
It wasn't as though he hadn't tried, but he just couldn't sleep properly on a mattress and Taiji had refused to buy new furniture simply to cater to 'her majesty's every whim'. He'd been told that if he had wanted something different, then he would have to save up and buy it for himself. This was easier said than done on a shop clerk's salary, particularly while paying half the rent and other bills.
However, at long last Akira felt he had finally saved up to purchase an alternative to both the bothersome bed and lumpy couch. It was time to go shopping, and what better place to explore furniture options than a popular commoner shopping center such as a mall?

Nicolette had other reasons for being at the mall that day - mostly so she could explore the various department stores and see how the clothes and styles they offered differed from those in Grande Ile. While she had a wonderful time meandering about and trying things on - it all felt so strange and different and foreign - she left to wander around the mall proper for a while.
Her attention was caught on a store to one side as she walked and regarded it with much curiosity - too much, in fact, to notice until too late that there was someone in her path. Luckily she didn't ram right into them, but she halted abruptly immediately before running into him too badly. "Ah!" She exclaimed, hastily taking a step back and raising her small hands, a furious blush creeping into her cheeks in her embarrassment. How could she have forgone paying attention to where she was walking like that?! "Excusez-moi, je suis tellement désolé!" The girl said quickly, reverting to French in her flustered haste. She realized her words a moment or two later, and she went on in an apologetic tone, "Ah -- excuse me, I'm very sorry; I wasn't watching where I was going for a moment," the young noble finished, her cheeks still flushed red with embarrassment at her mistakes.

As he had been similarly side-tracked and thus oblivious to his surroundings, Akira had not the sense nor foresight to see what was coming and to step out of the way. He jumped, somewhat startled, but was only more alarmed when he realized what had happened.
Though he opened his mouth to apologize, the girl was already talking and he would not interrupt her. The language she spoke, however, was almost completely alien to him and it was all he could do to stand there, dumbfounded. "U-um...pardon me...?" he uttered hesitantly. He needn't have worried, though, because a few moments later she seemed to have realized what she'd said and was kind enough to translate. At least, he thought she was translating.
"No, no, the fault is all mine," he answered quickly, guessing the heat in his cheeks must have meant his face was at least as red as hers. He bowed, partly out of apology and partly to conceal the sudden ruddiness of his complexion. "I wasn't paying attention either. Heh...this place is pretty distracting, isn't it?" he chuckled uneasily.

"No, it's my fault," she insisted with a shake of her head, "you were merely standing in one place and I was walking while not paying attention, and for that I apologize." When he bowed, she curtsied, then straightened up with her fingers laced together in front of her, the blush still present in her cheeks.
"Oh, yes, it is," she readily agreed with a smile, "because everything is so interesting! I haven't been here too many times just yet." It had, after all, only been just a few weeks since her arrival in Kodo.
"Oh!" She started, hands quickly moving to her cheeks briefly before they lowered again, "I'm so sorry, I almost forgot to introduce myself," she apologized, blush deepening again at the realization. "My name is Nicolette. What is yours, if I may ask?"

Were curtsies like that normal for commoners? Akira wasn't so sure. He didn't recall anyone else exhibiting such behavior, apologizing or not. Then again, her mannerisms may have originated from the same place her language had.
He nodded with a bemused smile, saying, "I've never really come here before myself, either. Don't do much shopping, I guess." Then she was apologizing again and he raised a brow before chuckling when she mentioned what for.
Such politeness he hadn't known since before he'd left home. "Not at all; I forget all the time. I'm Akira," he answered, holding out a hand to shake. "Would it be too rude of me to ask where you're from, Miss Nicolette?"

Nicolette nodded at his response, the blush in her cheeks finally starting to fade. "Oh, yes, I know how that is, though I admit I don't do much shopping even when I come here, though," she admitted, a slight hint of sheepishness in her expression.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Akira," she replied brightly, though his outstretched hand made her hesitate a moment or two before extending her hand to meet his. She didn't normally greet people in such a way as this. "Oh! No, not at all," the girl went on with a quick shake of her head, then smiled, a hint of pride entering her expression and voice as she answered, "I'm from Grande Ile." The light accent she usually had became a bit more prominent as she stated the name of her home country. "Where are you from, if I may ask?"

"Oh? And why is that?" he dared ask, mostly for polite conversation, but somewhat out of curiosity. "I thought young girls such as yourself enjoyed shopping. Surely there has to be something in this whole mall that suits your tastes...?"
Noticing her hesitation, Akira smiled awkwardly for half an instant as he recalled his previous usual greeting upon meeting girls. Hoping she wouldn't mind, he gently lifted her hand to his lips and lightly kissed it before letting go. "The pleasure is all mine." Were people familiar with this gesture where she was from? He hoped so, or he would have just looked like an idiot.
"Grande Ile?" he repeated dumbfoundedly. "Oh...you know, I think I've met a person or two from there. It seems more and more people are leaving there and coming to Kodo. I wonder why that is." He put a finger to his chin thoughtfully before her question to him registered. "Me? Ah, I'm from the Sinnoh reigon; no where particularly special." He rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed.

...oh. Oh. "Do they?" She asked, her tone suddenly uncertain, as her hands raised to her cheeks briefly before they lowered to clasp in front of her, "I mostly just look around, as I've been very curious about the types of clothes that people buy in Kodo. All of my clothes come from Grande Ile, you see, so I don't buy any here.." But that didn't make it any less interesting. The topic of something to suit her tastes made her brighten considerably though. Indeed, her eyes even seemed to shine with the high level of enthusiasm and eagerness with which she continued, "Oh! Yes; or at least, I think so. While my house is very nicely furnished, Father said I could go pick out and buy a chair for myself! It's very exciting," she informed him, and indeed appeared thoroughly excited about the idea.
The fact that he changed the purpose of his gesture right in the middle of it also confused her, and another light blush crept into her cheeks. When he mentioned Grande Ile though, and also that he'd met people from there, her curiosity had piqued. "Oh! Have you met Luke fon Fabre, then? I know there's other Grande Insulaire here, but I've only found two so far," she admitted. And one of them she hadn't even known before, though that should have been obvious given the sizes and populations of both countries. Still, she didn't want to seem rude by speaking of only herself, so she smiled and tilted her head curiously as she asked, "Where is Sinnoh? I've never heard of such a place before." Was it a city on Kodo?

"Well, that was the impression I got," Akira said with a laugh. "I can't be certain myself, not being a young lady." Not technically, anyway. "Oh, that's right - the things they have for sale here probably seem dull compared to the extravagant, intricate tastes and styles of Grande Ile. Guess it's not called 'grand' for no reason." He paused. "Or do you enjoy the contrast?" As one who had been used to formal wear and custom clothing most of his life, he himself certainly found the concept of mass production and fashions appealing to the general population to be quite interesting.
When her face seemed to light up, he listened and smiled good-naturedly. Father, huh? It seemed she hadn't come to Kodo having severed ties to home. Perhaps she was just visiting, but then why mention a house? "You have a house here in Kodo? Or is it in Grande Ile?" he inquired. "If you don't mind me asking. Your parents must be very...doting on a daughter like you." She didn't seemed spoiled, but she didn't exactly seem knowledgeable about the outside world, either. Not with a padding of her family's fortune between herself and reality.
The fact that she knew and mentioned Luke took him by surprise at first, but then he realized that Luke belonged to a noble family. Of course the wealthy would know one another. He nodded slowly. "Yes, I've met him. I think you're the only other one I know of, though. Perhaps I've just yet to be more social." He shrugged. "Sinnoh...? Oh, it's just another reigon like Kodo. Nothing special, really."
He looked up at the sign of the store. "Furniture, hm? I'm looking for something myself, actually. Why don't we explore our options together?" he asked, going to open the door for her. "Ladies first."

"Perhaps here in Kodo, they do, or in Sinnoh," or even in Grande Ile, "but I don't think that I do. I don't actually do very much shopping at home," the girl admitted a little sheepishly, then nodded quickly to his question. "I'm interested in how different the styles are - so yes, it's the contrast that I'm interested in. You may think they seem dull, but it's still a very new style to me, since I've only known the clothing styles in Grande Ile." Since she'd grown up with them, they had become the norm - coming here had been most interesting, and the vast difference in styles greatly intrigued her.
His question was quite valid, and she nodded her head quickly. "I live in Grande Ile, permanently, in my family's manor in the capital. But my parents agreed to let me travel to other regions to learn about them and get more worldly experience, so they purchased - I think that's what it is - a small house for me to live in for the six or so months I'll be here," she explained, her hands still folded neatly in front of her. "I'll return home for the winter holidays, and after that I think they'll send me to a different region for some length of time so that I can learn about that one next." She hesitated, then added, "Does that make sense?" Doting, though... The word made her frown thoughtfully, her brows furrowed and lips pursed in such a way that they appeared to simply stick out, the overall effect looking like more of a thoughtful pout than anything else. "I suppose they do, in a way, yes, but Father dislikes buying things unnecessarily."
The fact he'd met Luke seemed to be another thing that appeared to improve her already very positive mood, and she smiled happily - but the mention of not knowing others lessened that positive emotion almost as quickly as it had risen in the first place. "Really? Father seemed to think there were plenty of others, but Kodo does seem to be rather large.." It made sense that he hadn't met too many, with the region being the size that it was. The topic of Sinnoh intrigued her, and she moved to that eagerly. "What's it like in Sinnoh?"
"Oh! What are you looking for?" Was he also looking for a chair? That would be quite the coincidence! With a nod, a bright smile, and a short but thankful curtsy, the young girl moved ahead to enter through the door he held open for her. "Thank you; I would love to explore the store with you, it'd be much preferable to doing so alone."

"Well good, then we're in the same boat," he told her with a smile at her confession. "Actually, I'm not exactly used to these styles either, but clothing isn't exactly my passion, so I've never really thought to look at what they sell here."
Nodding in acknowledgement, Akira couldn't help but be a little envious of Nicolette's arrangement with her parents. Then again, like Dove, she was a girl, so it wasn't likely they'd depend on her to carry on the family name. Thus they'd have less reason to try to lock her up and keep her from the world like Luke's and his own parents had done. "I see," he remarked, thinking. "Sounds like a fun experience. Though I have to say, I'm a little surprised your parents would allow you to do such a thing. Are you their only child? I'd think they would miss you a lot."
"O-oh, I'm sure there are," he amended quickly, "but like I said, I'm not too social a person. I haven't had much time to meet too many people between my job, buying groceries, paying bills, and such, so there must be a lot more...Grande...Insulaire here that I don't know about."
It was his turn to look sheepish when she asked about Sinnoh. Yes, he had originated there, but as Luke didn't know much about the city he was from, let alone the rest of the region, Akira wasn't too familiar with Sinnoh, either. "Um...you know," he tried, "It's, uh...like any other region, I guess. Like Kodo. I'm sure you'll find out when you travel there; I wouldn't want to spoil the surprises ahead of time."
Glad to have a change of topic, he grinned as Nicolette asked what he was looking for. "Heh, that's one of my favorite song titles," he murmured absently, "'What are you looking for'..." Then her words sunk in. "Right. I wasn't really sure what I was looking for. Something that could work as a bed, but isn't one, I guess. And not a couch, either." He was pretty sure either of those would be out of his price range, anyway.
"Maybe something cheap, like a sleeping bag." Though that was kind of depressing. To have to sleep on the floor? Ugh. "I'm actually curious if they have anything like an indoor hammock, but I don't want to get my hopes up," he confessed. "What about you? No matter what it is, I agree; it's nice to have company in a new store."

He wasn't used to these styles either? "Are they different in Sinnoh, then?" She asked, tilting her head curiously.
She nodded happily, her smile brightening more. "It's been exceedingly enjoyable thus far, barring a rough beginning; my parents let me go because they agreed with my argument that I need more world experience," she explained, casting her gaze downward as she entered the store. The end of her first - and only - betrothal still weighed on her, especially given that it was her own fault through her ignorance. His question, however, made her shake her head, and she smiled up at him, "I have a younger brother, Aluin. They do miss me, yes, and I miss them a lot too.." Her gaze dropped again as a pang of sadness washed over her, but the emotion was mild and only lasted briefly before she aimed another smile up at him. "Do you have any siblings, Akira?"
Ohh, well that made perfect sense. The girl nodded to show her understanding, her hands clasped in front of her still. The mention of jobs and bills, however, made her curious. "What job do you have? If I may ask," she added hastily, a light blush blooming in her cheeks at the thought such a question may have been too bold.
She listened closely to his description of Sinnoh - or what she expected to be a description, but instead was merely a deflection. He wasn't going to answer? Her disappointment showed plainly on her face. Well, she could sort of understand his rationale for not telling her, but... "But I'm curious," she insisted, disappointment giving way to enthusiasm and a desire to know. "And I don't know if I will end up going to Sinnoh after - my parents may decide to send me to another region entirely." There were quite a few more, weren't there? Her parents had lots of options of regions to send her to after Kodo.
"What song?" She asked, tilting her head curiously. Music had been the last thing on her mind, but his mention of it piqued her interest.
That quickly changed, however, when he described what he was looking for, something which thoroughly confused her for some length of time. "So, a bed that.. isn't a bed?" She repeated finally, her brows furrowed in her obvious confusion. "I'm... I'm not sure I understand," the young noble admitted, frowning up at him a little as she tried to figure out his reasoning. "Do you want a second place to sleep that isn't your bed?" She inadvertently completely missed his last question.

Ah, he'd dug himself a deeper hole. "I - well, they're different than what I know from Sinnoh," he told her. Nevermind that most of what he'd known was formal wear. "But I didn't pay too much attention to clothing."
Her downcast gaze didn't escape Akira's notice when they went in. His brows furrowed thoughtfully. "I'm sorry, is something the matter...?" he asked, his voice saturated with concern. "Was it something I said?" The question about siblings only caused a knot in his stomach and he chose to focus on her change in demeanor instead. He wasn't about to let it go just like that; this girl was probably used to hiding her true feelings about certain things when they were negative.
"Oh, of course you can ask, it's just that, I, um...it's a little embarrassing. But I work as a stock clerk at a convenience store," he confessed with a sheepish smile. "It pays the bills, though, and that's what counts, right?" As they passed by a couch, he absently stroked a cushion, feeling the velvet of the fabric under his fingers. It was then he noticed her obvious disappointment regarding his lack of disclosure on Sinnoh.
"Uh, er..." The young man flinched, unsure what to reply to that. "Well...the whole region isn't like where I'm from. I lived in Snowpoint City," he explained. "It's very cold there, but sometimes instead of snow, there's this stuff that falls called Diamond Dust and it's beautiful. Um, for a young lady of your class, though," he continued, "you might be more interested in the luxurious Hotel Grand Lake or the Resort Area. They should be able to accommodate you comfortably."
The girl was certainly curious, wasn't she? "I have it on my ipod," he said. "You can listen to it later if you like." Perhaps she'd forget about it as they continued to shop. There were a lot of interesting pieces around. That one set of furniture reminded him greatly of the white, contemporary motif that had once been a part of his old room. And then Nicolette was asking more questions.
Laughing lightly, he turned to beam at her. "I don't sleep in a bed. They're not...as comfortable to me," he said, thinking it wasn't a complete lie. He hadn't slept in one often enough to know if he preferred them over his hammock, but that was just as well. "But what about you? You didn't answer my question," he pointed out with a teasing smile.

It was rather difficult to fully pay attention to his words while also paying attention to the various pieces of furniture in the store, but she gave it her best effort to pay equal attention to him as well as the store's wares. Still, she nodded enthusiastically at his words. "I'm afraid I was the same - I didn't pay as much attention to clothing until I came here, and realized just how different it was to the styles back home," she explained, her fingers separating so that one small hand could lightly run over the back of a couch they passed. His next question almost startled her, if her very surprised expression was any indication, and she quickly lifted her head - and her gaze - to look at him. "The matter?" She echoed, seeming honestly confused. "No, no, you didn't say anything wrong," the girl insisted, though still seemed a little confused. She hadn't been at all paying attention to her own behavior or nonverbal reactions, and thus was at a complete loss as to why Akira had suddenly asked her what was wrong. Was it something she said? A poor inflection? Did she misspeak?
His explanation of his work wasn't what she had expected - but then, she realized, she had no idea what she had been expecting. Something political, perhaps? But there were a lot more jobs and positions people could have, weren't there? If there was a job to be done, someone had to do it. "Yes," she agreed, her smile bright. "It sounds interesting, too - is it fun?" She'd never had a job before - she would've stepped into her family's place in politics in Grande Ile before, but that wasn't the case now, and that wasn't exactly what she thought of as a 'job' or 'work.' It was more 'life.'
Snowpoint City... That sounded like a lovely place, judging from its name alone, but his explanation left her eyes wide and bright with curiosity. "That sounds absolutely beautiful," she replied breathlessly, not noticing that she'd become distracted from furniture in favor of watching him while he explained. "The hotel and the resort sound lovely too, but Snowpoint City sounds perfectly stunning. I think I'd like to go there someday," she suddenly decided on a whim, just from what he'd said about it. His offer to let her listen to a song later seemed to excite her, and she beamed quite happily and nodded, her cheeks flushing a little. "I'd like that very much!" She made a mental note to remember that, so she could hear what song he'd thought of. The girl was very curious.
"You don't... sleep in a bed?" She asked, her brows furrowed as she tried to process this bit of information. If he didn't sleep in a bed, where did he sleep...? She could understand not being comfortable somewhere, but if not in a bed, then where...? She was distracted from asking him where he did sleep, then - which was probably for the best, given that it might've been seen as kind of a personal question - by his own question. "I what? Oh! Ohh, I'm sorry," she said quickly, her eyebrows inclined and her expression one of apology. "I didn't mean to - I'm looking for a chair. I'm not exactly sure what kind of chair, really; I'm mostly hoping I'll know whenever I see it. If I see it," she amended after a small pause, her cheeks flushed lightly as her hands folded in front of her again. His question also served to remind her of the whole reason they entered the store in the first place, and she quickly resumed her scan of the various assortment of furniture once the realization hit her.

Akira didn't seem to mind the distraction from his words; in fact, he welcomed it. He liked listening, but talking about himself was something he wasn't sure he was too comfortable with because he never knew how much to tell or not to tell. In any case, the furniture was a distraction for him as well, but he had to keep reminding himself why he had come to the store in the first place.
"Pardon me, you just seemed a little sad when you mentioned your family," he explained. "But it probably wasn't my place to inquire into personal matters. Pretend it never happened."
"As far as my job, I've had worse," Akira said, chuckling. "It's easy; I'll say that much." It was also tediously boring, but why spoil her idea of the career?
Nodding at her reply to his mention of Snowpoint, he said, "Make sure you dress warmly if you do. I may not remember much of clothes, but I know they had to be enough to keep out the cold. They don't call it Snowpoint for nothing." The adorable tinge of her cheeks as she smiled excitedly caught his attention and he couldn't help smiling in return.
But then it was gone as the topic went back to the question of where he slept - or rather, where he didn't sleep. "No, but it's because I choose not to, not because I don't have one," he explained before she could ask. Sure he was poor, but he wasn't that poor. "I sleep on the living room couch in an apartment I share with my roommate. It's alright, but he needs the couch sometimes when I'm using it and I like the privacy of my room."
Shaking his head at her apology, he laughed and put up his palms. "No, please, I was just teasing. A chair sounds nice. I hope you'll find one you like." Glancing about, he browsed with his hands behind his back, feeling a bit awkward. "I don't want to keep you or anything, so if you find something you're interested, feel free to go investigate."
