In the grips of a vision sent to her by Kalona, Maeryn had disappeared deep into the heart of the mountains. Days later, she had returned to Black Skull changed, renewed, and fortified by the knowledge that her cause was one held up by the Raven Mocker. Since that momentous time, the mare had begun to search once more for new blood, new members to add to the strength of the Black Skull herd. Kalona, however, were difficult to find, and in few numbers. It was rare indeed to find any great concentration of them, and so when she scented not one, but two distinct Kalona, Maeryn raised her head and began to scale the boulders leading up to the mountain's peak.

"Show yourselves," Maeryn called, standing at the very top. From that vantage point, she could see the length and breadth of the Kawani lands. Black Skull's holdings were visible from here, assuring the Kalona of her herdmates' safety and security. The wind would carry the scent of blood, if it came, and she could just make out the small shapes beside the rocky incline of the mountain. With her large wings mantled, the elder Kalona awaited the arrival of her kinfolk, standing sentinel upon the mountain peak. It was said that Skinwalkers often chose mountainous regions to make their lairs, but if so, she could scent none. Perhaps it was a fiction, and the plains below were more of a danger, but Maeryn intended to leave no stone unturned.

Asphodel had been picking her way along the craggy mountainside. It was a typical day for the kalona mare, and she was traveling at an even pace, her long tail swishing behind her as she was scouting for prey. She never questioned the safety of the land she was traveling into - caring little for territories or other potential predators. The world was her playground. However, today, at least, her playground hadn't proven to be very interesting. There wasn't much in the form of prey she had found yet. And in addition, her sister, Bathory, was also in the area. Asphodel had no great bounties sisterly love for her, but as far as other soquili went, she was certainly in the tolerable range for the proud kalona. Like her, she was the product of a deliberatly smart match between two pureblooded demonic soquili. But she knew Bathory, she wasn't anything new or interesting. And besides, she was a lot larger than Asphodel, and there was always that niggling feeling in the back of Asphodel's mind of jealousy to the larger mare's imposing presence. Asphodel took more after her mother with a slight build.

However, her thoughts were derailed when she heard a thunderous call from higher in the peaks. She snapped her head up, furrowing her brow. Curiousity and defensiveness played at the same time in her mind. Who dared to call with such a demaned on these ground... and yet... something struck a deep chord within her. Something primal... something in her blood.

Without a comment to Bathory - why would she need to? - she snapped her wings open and went to investigate.

Bathory followed his sister, not particularly caring why or where they were going. These rocks crags, however, were much easier for her nimble companion to navigate than her. She took after her father; a massive Soquili more to the size of a mature bull than a mustang. Her body was heavily muscled and her hooves landed hand and steady on the rocks.

Her ears perked up, hearing the same voice Asphodel did. Though her lip turned up in a sneer when she took the to sky without even pausing to think if it was a good idea. More to protect her sister than genuine curiosity, Bathory opened her wings and followed. Her obligation to ensure her sister's survival had less to do with sisterly love and more to do with the fact that she felt a strong obligation to protect the bloodlines passed onto her by her father and mother.

The black mare waited at the top of the mountain's peak, sharp eyes alert for any sign of movement. And then she heard them. Leathery wings, heavy hoof falls. Yes, now more than ever, Maeryn was assured that the strangers were Kalona such as herself. When they came closer, she detected something very interesting indeed. Something that reminded her of a mare she'd known of old. In due time, she would investigate their connection to that mare, but for now... for now, she was all but certain that the strange Kalona were an even rarer breed; mares, like her. Few and far between in this day and age. Good. The herd was overrun with stallions, and Maeryn had missed the company of other mares, whether she chose to admit to such or not.

"Come closer," she said calmly, when they approached. "Let me have a look at you." She had every intention of investigating this. Pure Kalona were few and far between, a dying race whose spark she intended to never allow to go out. They were young, yes... these two, younger by far than the elder Kalona who stood as still as a statue, her mane shifting only minutely in the breeze. Once they would have dwarfed her, but not now, not when Kalona had granted her his boon.

As Asphodel approached the source of the call, her eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't been expecting to see another kalona in this region she wasn't related to at all, let alone a mare like that. She was grand in size - not just the bull-like bulk of her sister but tall with an enormous wingspan.

And beyond that, she had a presence. For a moment, the briefest moment, Asphodel got the impression she was looking at the Raven Mocker himself before her vision cleared and she saw it was a mare.

She landed, found herself stepping forward proudly, pinions snapping outwards to make herself look larger than her small frame.

"Who are you?" Ashodel questioned, unwilling to let even this imposing presence steal her nerve. "What are you doing here?"

The resemblance to the Raven Mocker hadn't gone unnoticed by Bathory, either. She circled a few more times before landing heavily next to her sister, taking in the impressive mare. She was large and regal looking; indeed her presence demanded a kind of respect and admiration unlike any other Soquili she had seen since her own father.

She gave a sharp look to her quick-tongued sister. This was no ordinary Soquili, even one as bull-headed as Bathory could see that. She stepped a bit closer to her command, though she didn't let her guard down...just in case her instincts were mistaken.

"I am Maeryn of the Black Skull herd, and I am here because the Raven Mocker's children are in short supply." Maeryn watched the pair of Kalona, approving of their approach, of the pride that they displayed. But there was deference, too, in the pair of mares. As there should be. "Tell me, children of Kalona, do you bear kinship to one Nightshade? I knew her of old." In her youth, yes, she had known a mare who wore the blue that the brown mare sported, and whose own horns were in such abundance. She could certainly have waited to ask that question, but no. Not this day. Not when she wanted to weigh these two, and discover whether they were worthy of the herd's name. If, indeed, they would take it.

She spread her wings slightly, and they were larger even than they had appeared. "You are in my territory. So, I might ask you the same." A question for a question, an answer for an answer. If there was other blood in this pair, it was weak indeed, diluted by pure Kalona might. They had none of the trappings of lesser Soquili, and all of those of Kalona. Nothing about them spoke of weakness, of frailty. Rather the opposite. They had been obedient, which was certainly wise of them. Their trust would be rewarded.

Asphodel's white eyes shone brighter as she tossed her head with pride. "Nightshade is our grand-dam" She responded with unabashed pride. "My sister and I are the product of her daughter, Masquerade, sired by Dyson Graves, a massive beast of a pureblooded Kalona." Her tail lashed behind her as she grinned. Asphodel did not hesitate to brag about her lineage. It was her biggest mark of pride. So far at least. Some day it would be HER that soquili had heard of, not just her grandmother.

She declined to comment on the fact that this massive mare claimed that this was her territory - neither apologizing or explaining her presence.

Her spiked tail lashed behind her as she looked over the territory from the vantage of the cliff. "Black Skull herd, hmm?" She feigned just a passing curiousity, but if this mare was indicative of the strength of a herd as a whole.... it spoke promise.

Bathory tossed on of her long braids over her shoulder. She knew she carried more of Nightshade and Masquerade's appearance than her sister - who looked a lot more like a small, lean version of their father. Bathory bore the tripe-crown shaped horns, which some had mistaken for unicorn blood. But NIghshade, Masquerade, and Dyson all were pure blooded Kalona and she was just as proud of her heritage as her sister. She nodded in solidarity, her muscles tensing only when the Elder mare mentioned they were on her territory; in case that meant a fight was on the horizon.

But she was hopeful... Bathory had not found many other Kalona in her days, at least not pureblooded ones.

Who was this Dyson Graves the grandchild of Night Shade spoke of? A familiar name, to be sure, but where had she heard it before? Maeryn took careful note of the name, setting it aside for further consideration. "Ahh, yes, I do remember that she had a daughter." Beyond that... it was ancient history, truth be told. The elder stood calmly, contemplating the pair of young mares. It seemed that the grey and blue mare had been elected as spokesperson for the two, and so she would address her, all the while taking note of the other.

"Yes, Black Skull herd. We are a herd of pureblooded Kalona, the first in the Kawani Lands. Our cause has always been the strengthening of our kindred, though we are also concerned with wiping out the Skinwalker stench from these parts." There was, after all, only room for one darkness upon the land, and that was a reasoning darkness, a shadow with thought and will... not the berserk chaos that the pelted plague had brought.

Asphodel's made a face at the mention of skinwalkers. She had crossed paths with their mad stink before. Fortunately for her, the ones she had encountered hadn't had the fortune of wings, not that Asphodel would have even considered another species possibly being her match. "Overrated." She scoffed at the mention of them.

"Too many soquili shudder at the mention of skinwalkers. But a kalona passes in their midst and they hardly give a second glance. Although... There are far too many diluted mutts roaming these lands that have set the herds at ease about Kalona. That needs to be remedied." She agreed with Maeryn.

"Just what is it that you are proposing?" Asphodel asked with narrowed, critical eyes. While she wasn't as large as her sister, she carried herself with confidence and pride that belied her slender size.

The elder was right in the fact that Bathory didn't choose to speak much, at least in situations she was unfamiliar with. Her sister was much more verbose, and more confident when it came to words. She preferred to be the slower to respond, often choosing her words more carefully. Asphodel thought it was confidence, but Bathory worried it was more brash than so.

But so far, at least, they seemed to be in good company. She felt herself growing more and more intrigued by what this mare was saying. She hadn't been actively looking for a mate recently, but she hadn't failed to notice the lack of eligible stallions even if she was. She knew one day it would be her duty to further her father's powerful bloodlines, and she wouldn't sully their lines with some unfit mutt.

She snorted at the mention of skinwalkers. She had never gone hoof-to-paw with those vile creatures, but you could smell them a mile away in most cases and she had no fear of them. They were foolish, rash, and lacked any kind of rational thought when it came to fighting. Bathory knew she wasn't any kind of a tactical mastermind, but she knew more about fighting than crazed, drooling walkers seemed to know.

Additionally, skinwalkers were another threat to her Kalona lines. Once their vile, rotting pelt adhered to them, their bloodline was just an infected and useless as a half-breed.

When Asphodel asked what she was proposing, she stepped up and listened closely, raptly interested.

Maeryn's old heart filled with pride to be in the company of such suitable young mares. When Asphodel questioned her, she gave an approving nod. Good, the mare did not immediately accept that Maeryn's intentions were for the best. However good her intentions might be, there were certainly others that would leap at the opportunity to manipulate the unwitting to their own ends. While she did not yet have either mares' name, she was content in the knowledge that they were wise enough to hear what she had to say and give it due consideration.

One sister listened in silence while the other questioned. It was a good strategy, one which she and Rot had employed time and time again to great effect. The elder observed the pair, taking note of the dynamic between them. "You are both young, strong, and of old Kalona lineage. I do not propose that you blindly join my herd in our quest to strengthen our dwindling breed, nor to eradicate the Skinwalker threat. However, I do suspect that you would make excellent allies. Here is what I propose: accompany me back to the Black Skull herd and bide with us for a time. I think that there is much that we can learn from each other; I am familiar with your sire's name only, and I knew NightShade in my youth. Surely there are lessons that both lines bring with them."

She pondered her words, carefully picking and choosing among them. "Are you affiliated with a herd already? If so, I would be interested to know of it. There are few enough of our kind, and fewer still who band together." It was not yet time to offer them a position in Black Skull's ranks. They would surely not know whether to accept such an offer, and she wanted to find out whether they were worthy of it. ... All of the evidence pointed to their worthiness, but she had not yet pinned down what their motivations, their interests might be. Only time would tell what they might choose, and what she in turn would make of them. Still, there was potential here.
