The quiet mare stood and waited quietly at the edge of the forest. She was headed into a field if she stepped out into the open. Did she want to expose herself? How had her mother danced through life without a worry? How had she been able to just be herself without worries or repercussions? Rupali had always been a quiet soul, she had always felt a bit like a duck out of water around large groups and here she was… fully grown and essentially living at home. She missed her sisters, she missed the idea of having friends….
The stars twinkled overhead and she felt a tear slip down her cheek as she whispered, “Is this all I’m meant to be?”

The healer travelled lazily, he missed his mother in all her finery and wanted to spend time with her. Truth be told though he missed his grandfather. Grandpa Oberon, just the two words brought a smile to his usually somber face, and Kerr’Tien couldn’t help but look forward to family time. Lost in his own thoughts, enjoying memories of his childhood, the stallion kept walking until finally the scent of someone registered. He was not alone anymore, and hadn’t been alone for quite awhile. Concentrating, he scented into the wind and figured the rough source of the other.
“Hello over there?”
He guessed and spoke. Would the other respond?
xxxxx
Oh dear god. Sniffing loudly, Rupali tried to erase the traces of sadness that were probably obvious on her face and fought the panic that made her want to bolt away from the voice. It was time for her to grow up and be around other people, it would do her a world of good. Especially since her pappa had taken to going out and trying to find stallions for her to “fall in love and create heirs” with. Love and heirs really shouldn’t go in the same sentence, should it?
“H-hullo.” Her voice was low, soft, and tenuous at best. She moved out into the field and the moonlight lit her up like a noonday sun. Silver swirls nearly glowed in the dark, hair just as bright. Heavy, curled, tied into three groups. Her bangs were in her eyes and she slowly raised them to make eye contact with him.
Woah.
xxxxxxxx
Woah.
Kerr’Tien now was the one standing in the shadows and he watched the unicorn mare make her way into the open. Seemed brave in his opinion since someone saying hello did not mean they were actually going to be friendly. She had a lot of cahonies. The faeries must be on her side. Especially for her to seem to almost glow in the moonlight. Definitely blessed, and to be honest, more than a little bit pretty. He didn’t even know the mare’s name and it was probably just hormones speaking that made him think it, but perhaps he was about to meet destiny of some sort.
Tossing bangs back from his face the pink-haired stallion moved slowly and deliberately closer. Eyes locked on hers and an incredibly intent expression. “Hello again. I am called Kerr’Tien. Why do you seem so familiar to me?” He had to know her, perhaps they had met as children?
“Have we met before?” This was going to bother him.

Had she met him before? Rupali took a hesitant step back away from the stallion and looked as carefully from side to side as possible. She was alone at night in a field and he thought they had met before? Did insanity run in his family? She tossed her bangs back and focused on the hear and now, “Uhm.. I … rather doubt it?” Her voice was soft as usual and lady-like to the core. Moonlight made her coat seem even more silver than blue cloven hooves shifted nervously.
“Can I help you?”
Perhaps he was just lost?
Her mind seemed to be all over the place tonight, it was after all, her first conversation with a male that wasn’t her father. “I am called Rupali, I could not say whether you are familiar to me or not because its night out so you’re not completely clear… but I do not know your voice.”

Kerr took a moment and shook his head, he was acting like a bit of an idiot. Taking a deep breath and then slowly releasing it, he bowed respectfully and spoke with more care, “You must think me mad fair maiden, but I assure you that I mean no harm and you’ll have to forgive me for letting my brain run off with my tongue.” Staightening from the bow, Kerr hoped that he had just repaired some of the damage done. Good job really, terrifying pretty young mares in the night.
“I do not require assistance, just some company perhaps?”
This was going to be the test to see if he had ruined any and all chances of spending some one on one time with the delightful creature. Kerr really didn’t have a clue why he was so attracted. In his travels he had met some gorgeous mares but something about this one screamed “right place at the right time.”

Rupali had been warned by her daddy not to be taken in by smooth talking folks, but then too she had also been told that if she ever met a single full-blooded unicorn that she should be on her best behavior. It was difficult to do what was right and keep parents happy. “I… Er..” Ru had always been shy; she didn’t have conversations with those that were new very well. Although once she had settled into others it was difficult to keep her from talking. “I.. suppose it would be okay for me to have some company, but I can’t be out too late. If my parents wake up they’ll think that harm has come to me.”
Oh man, that was really lame. She was an adult and here she was saying that she couldn’t be out at night without mommy and daddy getting riled up. “Why are you here? Isn’t it normal to be asleep at this time of night?” Annnd now she had insulted him.
Rupali wished she had Zara or Miki’s way with words… Her sisters were so beautiful and capable. A sadness fell over Ru as she awaited his answer.

Kerr’Tien normally wouldn’t spend so much time with a mare that seemed so obviously hell bent on not spending time with others…. But there was something about the way she glowed in the moonlight. She seemed so wholesome and pure… a shining beacon in more than one way. He took a deep breath and decided to try coming off a little coyer himself. It would not behoove him to seem too desperate to be around her. He did have other places he could go.
… not that any of them really came to mind at this particular moment.
He looked at the swirls covering her pelt and felt his eyes relaxing. Everything about her seemed restful… and sweet… and he just wanted to know more. He had to.
“I don’t normally sleep very well at night; I find myself much more comfortable at night time. The rest of my family are social butterflies to an exteme and of course with the royal duties it’s easier to fulfill them by being nocturnal. I was raised to sleep during the daylight hours and get up in the early evening. So rest at ease… I’m free to keep spending time with you.”
She probably would have been happier if he had said, ‘skip it’ and headed for the hills but … what the hey he was feeling particularly stubborn this evening.
“So… what are you doing on this gorgeous evening? Looking for a shooting star to wish upon? Or perhaps you just realized that your wish had snuck up on you already?” Ok.. he really wasn’t doing a good job at playing hard to get but the shyness really made him itch to ruffle her. He wanted to toy with her and at the same time… wanted to be able to protect her. This was not boding well for him.

Rupali watched the stallion with a mix of fascination and horror. Was he really this ridiculous? How was she supposed to take anything that he had to say seriously when he was making jokes about being what she had wished on a star for… or that she had come out here to make a wish on a star for a stallion to come into her life. Her papa would certainly be filled with dislike if his little girl was wishing for just any boy. Nope, a pure unicorn would be the minimum that she’d be expected to wish for.
A giggle boiled up in her throat and she could feel herself softening towards the stallion just a little bit. He was harmless enough and it made sense for him to be fully nocturnal and so perky at night. If she was bouncing around so much she would question what was wrong with her because truth be told she was really starting to feel a bit on the sleepy side. “What do you think I would wish for?” She chose to ignore the suggestive overtone and focus on her own innocence. Rupali was a lady after all and it wouldn’t do for this stallion to think that she’d wish for something untowards.
Oh man, it really was not her nature to be a stick in the mud and she propped up a hoof and gave a delicate yawn. Perhaps it was just the night creeping on and making her want to go to bed or perhaps it was the obviously gentle nature of the other but she was feeling quite sleepy… so delightfully sleepy. Her eyes drifted shut for a moment and a small smile danced at the corners of her lips. “What would you wish for if you could have whatever you wanted?” She’d wish for her family to all be home. All of them. Even if just for a few days.

Man… there is certainly something about that mare that had Kerr’Tien feeling just a little bit itchy. There was moonlight… and her beauty… and the faery folk were definitely up to some sort of shenanigans tonight. He wasn’t as much of a fanatic as his mother.. besides, there would only be one prince and one princess. His mother and his uncle. His mind wandered all over the place for a moment before his question caught him by surprise.
“You know.. I think that I would really like to just find a place to call my own. I grew up a bit of a wanderer because my mother never felt the need to stay in any one place. You know.. that can really be quite stressful.”
If someone had asked him that question in the bright of a full day he really would not have thought of that answer. It would not have meant anything for him to give a glib answer about wanting to find a pretty lady to spend time with or some other no-thought answer but… this glowing blue orchid really would not benefit from a flip answer given without a second thought. What should he says to her now?
“So if you wouldn’t be looking for a stallion like me, what do you want? Maybe I have the ability to grant you whatever it is you wish for?” Shifting closer, Kerr’Tien wanted to stand closer, perhaps be able to catch the floral scent that had to be coming from those bright flowers.

Where had this serious behavior come from? For the life of her she really couldn’t figure out what was going on. She spent almost all of her time with her mother and father… Perhaps she had become a shut in that had no clue how to talk to others. Yeah, that was a likely thing… even as a foal she was unwilling to deal with strangers. “Oh… well, what are you going to do to make your own home?” She noticed the stallion moving closer, but… he seemed to be nice enough and certainly didn’t have the looks of a skinwalker or kalona.
This Kerr’Tien certainly was making her feel like a young and silly girl. “I wish… I wish that I wasn’t so shy.” She blurted her wish out and felt her cheeks growing hot and red. “When I was little my siblings would play and rough house and laugh and be loud and I never felt comfortable to be the same…” Wait… where had that come from? She loved her sisters, she missed them. Now she was telling some stranger that she grew up being jealous of how open and sweet natured they were. Yeah, there was definitely something in the water lately.
“So… what now?” They had made some small talk and they had both looked up and given away a personal bit about themselves. What did a lady and a gentleman do in the moonlight when they had just met each other? What exactly was she supposed to do. What was she supposed to say to him? He was so close and so much bigger than her… It was stranger to be around another male. Pawing at the ground, Ru dipped her head down so that her hair would fall down in her face. Creating a shield as she waited quietly to see what he would say.
