They had been searching for days for the stallion who dubbed himself The Great Detective. Coop and Anaon had become friends over those past few days, since there was nothing to do but search and talk. Anaon learned all about Coop's past and he learned hers. The stallion often wondered about what would happen if someday the ghosts of the past came back, would he or Anaon leave the current companion to be with the long lost love? It was a curious and upsetting thought, so he pushed it from his mind.
His inner musings would be interrupted when they encountered another soul on the trail, he and Ana would ask them questions about Wystan, his whereabouts and what the stallion was like. Most had not even heard of the stallion detective and that worried Coop, for how could he be a famous detective if no one knew of his existence? But the others knew him and told the couple if they have a mystery or a question, Wystan was the stallion to see.
Coop shook his head as he tried to process the wondrous things that Wystan had supposedly done. They almost seem too good to be true, there had to be some embellishment. The pink stallion cast his emerald gaze to his friend and traveling companion, she was being unusually quiet. He bumped up against her and gave her a reassuring smile, "Don't worry, we will find him."

He had begun to hear rumors of a two soquili who were looking for him, the angeni sent Holmes out to find the couple, curious about the reason for their search. The owl was gone for a few hours, when he came back he described what he saw in great detail, for the familiar knew that Wys loved details.
Wystan smiled, the thought of a new case lifted his spirits, he was starting to get bored with nothing to solve. The winged stallion took flight following Holmes to where the couple slowly continued their search. He glided smoothly in the air and landed near the two soquili, a bright smile on his countenance, he had caught the stallion's words to the mare before he landed and announced, "You need not look anymore, for I am Wystan, the detective you seek." He gave a graceful bow and then turned his gaze upon the two, waiting for the answer to his unspoken question, 'why are you in need of my services'.

Her thoughts kept being negative with constant 'what ifs' questions. What if we do not find him? What if Coop decides he has had enough and leaves? What if I fail? She was filled with such worrying that she could only nod to Coop's reassuring words as he attempted to lift her spirits.
The mare gave a slight start when a large stallion with four wings landed before her and Coop. His words brought her out of her depression and made her heart soar, "Wystan. Thank goodness you are here," Anaon shifted her body weight from side to side and then was about to tell him what they were looking for when she remembered her manners, "I am Anaon Nox and this is Coop Amores, we have been searching for you for days to ask you an important question." She took a deep breath, and before she could think any negative 'what ifs' she dove into her question, "We are searching for a flower that allows those who consume it to be immune to false flame, like hooves that are aflame. Have you heard of such a plant?"

Coop just stood there, surprised that the stallion had come out of the sky like a wish come true, it was as if he had been watching them and waiting for the most opportune moment to introduce himself. The pink stallion nodded his head when the mocha colored mare introduced him to the detective angeni. After Wystan answered all ofAnaon's questions, Coop had a few of his own for the great detective.

Wystan bowed his head again once the introductions were made, "It is a pleasure to meet you both. Anaon, I know of the flower of which you seek. Many have sought it and many have failed. I know of the whereabouts of the plant, but why do you wish to go on a quest that could very much mean the end of your life?" The stallion was curious to hear the mare's story, but he was also a father and wanted to make sure that she knew the dangers she would face in search of the flower. A desert was not a place of happiness, it was a dry place filled with death and bleached bones.

Anaon opened her mouth wanting to demand that he tell her the location, but as she let his words sink in, the mare understood that he wanted to know if she was doing the quest for the right reason or if greed was the motive. She took in a deep breath and then let it out, "My sister has flaming hooves, they are a genetic trait that was passed down from our father. While in our mother's womb the flames were causing our mother great deal of discomfort, enough that it caused our father to feel guilty and leave her once the three of us were born. He took one basket away from mother, believing it to be the one to have caused her pain. He took our brother, who did not have the flaming green hooves. When our mother found out that Amelia had hooves like her father, Mama as happy, for she each time she looked at her daughter, she got a glimpse of Nightmare, the stallion she loved. But there was also sadness with that look, for Mama knew that Amelia could never get close to someone without the fear of burning them. Just recently, Amelia fell in love and found her lifemate, it was when I met him I knew what I had to do, I had to find a flower that would allow the two of them to get close without third degree burns. I would do anything in my power to help her," Anaon stared at the stallion, daring him to say her reason to go on a quest to the middle of the desert was not good enough.

Wystan was surprised, he knew of Nightmare, for Wystan had went in search of him many years before. He had heard rumors that the stallion had fallen in love and had children, the detective just never thought that he would be meeting those children, "I know of your father and his condition with the burning hooves, everything he touched would turn to ash beneath the heat of his hooves. Your reason for searching for the flower is a good one and since you have heard of it, I assume you know the risks that are involved." He bowed his head to the mare, "On the back edge of the desert, in a cave that has long been forgotten by the average folk, resides a flower. It can only grow in the most torturous of heats and needs little to no water to survive. The flower seems almost delicate, with thin steams that are coming out of the dry ground and brittle orange and red petals. In an abstract way, the flower resembles the sun, that is why many call it the Flour del Sol, or flower of the sun. Do not get it confused with Sunflowers, they are not the same. In order for the flower to work you will need to grind it up and eat it, the taste will be spicy and make you wish for water in a place that there is none. The flower paste will last as long as you keep it damp. Many have tried to take the flowers out of the desert to grow them someplace else, but none were successful . If you bring back seeds, perhaps you will have a better chance than those who have come before you." The stallion beckoned Holmes to come over, the owl had a stick in its talons and it began to draw the path Coop and Anaon would need to take. "Memorize this map, it will lead you right to the cave. You cross these mountains, and then you enter the desert, you will need to go north east and cross the entire desert to reach the hidden cave. You will be able to distinguish the proper cave by this symbol carved above the entrance," Holmes drew a flower on fire, "it will be hard to see, since the dye used has become faded." The stallion looked hard at the two soquili, "There is no water once you leave the mountains, you will need to carry as much water as you can into the desert with you. At night the desert becomes frigid, while during the day the sun makes it feel as if your bones could melt and your blood boil." He looked over to the direction of his current residence, "I have baskets for you that will hold a few weeks worth of water for your journey, if you do not waste it."

Coop's heart began to beat as he listened to the stallion's words, he had been to the desert once before, and it did not seem as deadly as Wystan described it. Coop forgot his questions to Wystan and began to wonder how he and Anaon were going to accomplish this feat, but then something made him pause, he looked at the detective, "You say all this as if you have been there once before." The pink stallion looked at Anaon, he knew that she would feel guilty for making him come with her on this journey, and he also knew he should tell her that it was his own choice and he would help her accomplish her quest, "Anaon, stop looking at me like that and don't feel guilty that you brought me on this journey with you. I am glad I came with you and now that I know how dangerous it is, I am glad I am not letting you go alone." He did not care that Wystan was most likely listening in on their conversation, he wanted Anaon to know that he would not leave her.

She wanted to cry at Coop's words, he was a mere stranger a few days ago and now he was one of her great friends and would be going into a life or death situation with her. She bumped up against him and gave him small smile, "Thank you Coop. You are a life savor." Anaon's mind continued to race as she thought about all the supplies that they would need for the trip across the desert and then back again. They were going to be loaded down, which would make traveling so much slower. Three weeks without food was the standard length one could live without sustenance, how long would it take them to cross the desert, how many weeks? "Wystan, how many weeks do you think it would take to cross the desert?"

He smiled at Coop, he was observant, "I have made this journey once myself, to prove that there was such a plant. I had consumed it and then tried to bring back seeds, but alas I do not have skill in herbology and could not keep the plant alive." The stallion let the two have their private moment and when the mare asked him a question, he contemplated the answer, he had flown the journey, so it did not take him that many days, but to walk, that was another monster all together, "It may take you a month to get across and a month to get back. You will not be able to carry that much water with you, or it will break your backs. While you travel, keep an eye out for Cacti, they can provide you with a water source should you need one." Wystan beckoned for the two to follow him as he lead them back to his current den. Some nice Kawani people had woven him baskets that were able to hold water in them. They would benefit Anaon and Coop greatly.

All three of them began the slow pace back to where ever Wystan was taking them. Coop felt as if his mind was heavy, two months in the boiling sun, with only the water they are able to carry. He knew that some desert plants could provide water, food and shelter, but would they be able to do that for 60 days? He knew that they were going to have to try.
Wystan gave them the baskets, their were twelve in total and they rested on the back of the soquili in a comfortable balanced way. They were pretty big baskets, able to hold enough water for a few weeks, if they did not guzzle it all in the first couple of days. The detective told them about different plants in the desert that would be okay to eat and which ones to avoid, he also showed them an herb that would give them strength as they crossed the hot landscape. They got two months worth of the herb, placing it in the basket designated for food.
They spent a few days with the detective, hearing stories and learning all they could about what they were going to face. Finally the dawn of the new day arrived and Coop and Anaon had to go their separate ways from the detective and Holmes.
Coop watched as Anaon nuzzled her thanks to Wystan and then walked over to Coop, her words were filled with slight awe and fascination, "I have the strangest feeling that one of these days Wystan will be family." Anaon then shook herself and smiled at Coop, "I'm being silly, perhaps my brain is telling me that it is time we start this journey."
The pink stallion nodded and smiled at the mare, he felt a pang of sadness or jealously, he was not sure which, when Anaon mentioned she thought Wystan may become family in the future, the cerynei knew that he was just being silly as well, Anaon had even said that the detective was the best friend of one of her aunts, perhaps that would turn into something more than friendship.

Side by side, the two soquili walked north, basking in the light of the rising sun. High in the sky above them, the detective watched as the two walked away and out of sight toward the desert and the unknown. Coop and Anaon were going to learn more about each other in the months to come and only they would be the judges if it is a positive knowledge or a negative. "Good luck," he said to the open air, "You are going to need it." He flew off into the sky until he too was nothing but a black spect in the distance.
