Samael walked back through the trees, taking his time to enjoy the way the sun shone a dappled pattern through the leaves. He'd just made his first ever dragon kill, and even though he felt a little bad for how it had taken place, overall, he was pleased with the outcome. And he had a nice new orb to add to his practically nonexistent collection, to boot! Still, he hoped all of his fights wouldn't give him such a feeling of remorse. He'd never thought he'd pity a dragon, since they were aggressive and possessive creatures, anyway. Frankly, Samael didn't want anyone on his land, either, but that was a moot point, since no one was after him for his soul.
Lost in thought as he was, Sam didn't notice he was being preyed on until he was thrown headlong into a tree. Splinters dug into the more fleshy flaps of his wings, but the surprise of the moment hid the pain of it rather well. Squirming to his feet with little coordination, he glanced around wildly, barely dodging the snap of teeth that came his way. He stumbled to the side, fanning his wings to help him gain his footing. Alarm sprung up in him as he caught sight of the dragon that ambushed him. It was... bigger than the one he'd just killed, and Sam felt a spring of fear bubble in him. He crouched low, hoping to avoid the creature's lashing talons. And when there was a pause in the attack, he sprung up into the trees, kicking out hard with his back legs.
He landed shakily on a low branch, but was too afraid to look back and see if the Ysali was after him. He climbed higher and higher into the greenery, till his wings scraped against the bark and threatened to be caught in the branches. Crashing below told him the larger creature hadn't given up her hunt, but Sam had quite enough of fighting with this one. Careful not to be too loud, he leaped nimbly between the branches, desperate to leave this angry dragon behind.
