Kindra itched, she HATED sitting around, again she'd come off worse in a fight and endured a (well deserved) dressing down from N'mol. She'd felt incredibly guilty at the pain she'd seen in his face when he'd told her how worried he'd been. She didn't MEAN to get hurt but when those Wherholder bastards played dirty ... they REALLY played dirty .. no honor in a fight at all ... they were worse than pond scum to her right now.
After about a sevenday (she lost teack of the days somwehere) of being forced to bedrest after her injuries had been stitched up, something about torn muscles and the fact she wasn't a skinny wretch saving her from bleeding out at Holdtown. That and N'mol's worry about her made her sit for that length of time but she couldn't take it any longer. She wandered around the infirmary, checking on those she'd tried to protect back at Holdtown, cursing that shaffing brat that dared call herself a Goldrider ... that b***h had abandoned her Holdtown when the going got rough ... that really rankled Kindra but she shook her head, clearing it.
Her real goal right now was the old healer. Despite his regular grumpiness setting her on edge he was the only man besides N'mol that could argue with her and actually win and get her to listen to him ... at a later date anyway when she thought back over it. She knew that a lot of the healers looked up to him, since he'd been a MasterHealer back at Malvren.
She'd bothered her healers enough to know that the man was awake and mostly lucid so she thought that it would be a good idea to go see how he was doing. She actually respected the man, he'd fought two whers now plus Handlers and came out alive.... he was a stubborn old b*****d she'd give him that, she chuckled at the thought.
She reached his room, along with a bowl of fliched meat scraps for the flits, the man had a decent Faire and she figured it would be a good peace offering, considering their last meeting hadn't gone so very well .... this time she'd definitely let HIM feed his flits. She knocked on the door and a small, very young looking Healer, sorry ... Weyrling rider judging from her knots and the blue dragon butting at her legs and screeching terribly. "Is Bereck awake girl?" she asked of the young girl, to which the girl blanched when she realised Kindra was one of the jr weyrwomen and just nodded, scurrying out of the room muttering something about Phas...phes? .. needing to be fed. "Take good care of your blue girl" she said as the girl and the dragon ran past her. "guess i'll take that as my cue to enter" she muttered to herself, "Masterhealer Bereck?" she said, holding the small bowl of meat in the crook of her bad arm and opening the door with her good one. "Are your flits hungry? I brought some meat, didn't know if the healers would be thinking of your faire" she tried to make her tone even and polite, quiet too in case the man was sleeping.. though how anyone could sleep through that blue's screeching she didn't know. "I've been told your Dragon is still guarding one of the injured over at Holdtown, commendable She's a good dragon" she smiled genuinely. She might think less of the 'lesser' dragons than she did of metallics but Suunath WAS rubbing off on her, and she could praise good actions even from those 'lower' than her Gold, without any bitterness or sarcasm. If she praised a green, then it meant something deep to Kindra indeed.

Tired, in pain and yet slightly slower of thought than he would like from a mild dose of fellis, stressed, worried, bored. In short Bereck was not a happy healer even by his own cranky standards and just about the last thing he wanted was the company of that particular snooty gold rider.
Life just loved to give him what he didn't want.
When Kindra entered Bereck looked up from the book he had been reading, regarding the gold rider over the rims of his small round reading glasses with piercing blue eyes. What was she doing here? She must have motivation beyond offering food to his firelizards, three of which were currently present. Little green Vena was curled up in his lap, silver Marrow looked on with orange eyes and a hiss from the rafters while round green Ichor waddled towards the edge of the bed with her eyes fixed on Kindra.
The less than graceful green promptly fell off the edge with a surprised squeak and landed on the wooden floor with a soft thump. Blinking in a confused manner and clearly not hurt she got back to her feet and waddled on towards Kindra's shoes.
Bereck had not broken off his sharp gaze for a moment. He did however finally decide to speak. "Gold rider Kindra. I can assure you my colleagues are well aware of the needs of my faire, which are few. They feed themselves for the most part but I dare say Ichor will always accept a treat. Don't try to touch Marrow, he'll set fire to your hair." Fair warning given, it wasn't his problem if she couldn't respect personal space... though it wasn't as though she could actually violate it with him in the rafters. "You were informed correctly; as ever Berath acts according to her conscience and defends those who cannot defend themselves," he added, civil but even more unmoved by the girl's praise than he would be by the average youth's good opinion.

Kindra's eyes flickered towards the hissing flit from the rafters, even without Bereck's warning she'd have given the flit his space. She would have bent to help the round little green back up to the bed but that would have stretched her stitches. She did take the bowl in her unslinged arm and offered it to Bereck "I'm sure, i just thought they might be busy to remember sometimes that's all" she said, flicking her eyes away from him, she really didn't have that many ulterior motives for visiting actually... especially since her own temporary invalid state kept her from doing much, she couldn't even go flying on Suunath since her Gold was herself recovering from the fight.
"Of course she does Masterhealer, as did all of us that fought at Holdtown that day" she said, slightly darkly but not directed at him. "she's a brave dragon Materhealer" she affirmed "how are you healing?" she asked him, eyeing the flit at her feet, wondering if he'd think she was rude if she took a seat.... weird... she didn't usually give a crap what he'd think but she found herself not wanting to offend him at the moment.

"Unfortunately." He was used to the slick feeling of blood all over his hands, it was as every day as shaving to him, but at the Hold... at the Hold it had been different. He had wielded a blade seeking to injure or perhaps even kill, not a scalpel seeking to heal. Regardless of Alina's assurances, regardless of what they had been trying to do it felt wrong. He was wise enough to know that he'd had little choice but that didn't make him feel much better about it.
For some moments more Bereck regarded Kindra steadily, but eventually he made a 'humph' sort of a noise and gestured to the chair beside his bed. "Sit down if you're staying, I don't appreciate being loomed at. I'm healing as well as can be expected, unfortunately I don't bounce back as easily as you youngsters." The old injuries hadn't exactly helped matters either, one of the deepest scars had even split slightly under the stress. It was healed back over fine now and would be a scar again soon enough but it was depressing that it had happened to begin with and... and it was all just hard and it didn't get easier, ever, and he was sick and tired of that fact.
Bereck sighed softly and removed his glasses, setting them aside with his book and rubbing his face wearily. Nothing to be done about it, and if he was going to endure Kindra's presence he was at least he was going to do it able to see her. Bereck picked up his normal rectangular spectacles, unfolded the arms and slid them on before returning his gaze to Kindra. "I know you must be healing well enough," he added, "somebody would have brought concerns to me if you weren't... the fact that you're up and about is further evidence of course." Well that hadn't been the brightest thing he'd ever said. Blast.
Ichor continued to waddle after Kindra, her stubby wings sticking out to the sides to give some more balance to her peculiar short-legged gait.

Kindra muttered under her breath, something unintelligible regarding the wherholders. She hadn't been there but she KNEW, before she'd been informed, that they'd been the instigators. She gritted her teeth against that thought and moved to the nearby chair since Bereck said she should sit,she was grateful, while her leg wasn't injured this time, she'd been up and about for a while and she WAS still healing so things took their toll faster than they normally would, another thing that irritated the stubborn young woman.
A gold flit emerged from Between, settling on the chair's back, eyeing Bereck with mild wariness, then glaring at the hissing silver, how DARE he hiss at hers! She was followed by a Black flit that instantly zipped inside the sling that held Kindra's arm still "BRAT!" she squealed a little, his body chilled from even the short trip though it warmed quickly with contact against her skin. "I do wish you'd stop doing that" she said, un-tensing. "Yes my healers have said i'm doing well but i shouldn't strain too much, especially the stitches in my back near the shoulder" she said, not really having to indicate the dressing there, it would be obvious through the light dress she wore for Trine's climate. The one around her ribs was less obvious. The tensing had hurt when brat startled her with his chilly body and she winced a little as she relaxed into the chair a bit, careful to lean more heavily on her 'good side'
"The sooner i can get back on Suunath's back, the better ... " she said wistfully, the Gold could fly, just not carry her Rider at the moment, but she (and every other injured dragon) was receiving the best care available so she wasn't really worried, she just itched to get in the saddle again. That fat green flit was at her feet again, "Come on then, up on my foot" she muttered to her, meaning to lift the flit to a level with her foot to where she could lean forwards a little and transfer the green back to her owner's bed.

He caught the muttering but couldn't determine the subject, just that Kindra was displeased about something. Nothing new there then.
Before he could think any further on the subject a gold firelizard appeared and started hissing at Marrow, which only drew a snarl from the silver. Bereck looked over at the female metallic with his lips pressed into a thin line, wondering if he could hit her with his cup of water if he hurled it at her. Possibly, but only if she didn't move and it was cruel anyway.
Kindra's abrupt squeal made him startle, and then hiss in pain as his catalogue of injures flared up. At least he managed to avoid cursing out loud, maintaining control and decorum in front of this woman was paramount least she start thinking anything too much about silly flighty green riding men.... At least she was kind to Ichor, who was now sniffing at her ankle with her forefeet on her foot.
"Please send your gold away if she's going to cause trouble," Bereck began shortly, but still civilly enough. "I will send Marrow away as well, he's not going to stop making a fuss either." Marrow didn't like anyone he disliked himself and the big silver made no secret of that at all. "Mmmh, anyway," Bereck lent over slightly and peered at Kindra's shoulder, dressings were visible through her dress. "Resting it is for the best," he agreed, his mind slipping into 'impartial healer' mode. "The faster it heals, the less it has bled and been stressed, the better the muscles will heal in the end. It's difficult with wounds in areas that get moved a lot, such as shoulders, but you should do what you can to keep still. Much as staying on the ground frustrates you it will benefit you in the end." There, that was his little speech over and he wasn't going to mention that he missed his own dragon. Pioth needed her more than he did right now.

If Kindra had any idea of what had been going through Bereck's mind injured or not she'd have slapped the man, thankfully she didn't know and was distracted with her chilly black who was snuggling into the extra warmth of the enclosed sling. It wasn't until she caught Bereck's hiss of pain that she looked back over, paying attention to Fury now "Fury, enough" she said briskly, at which the Gold stopped hissing but it didn't stop the flicker of an orange warning leaking into the color of her eyes.
"She won't do anything unless he makes a move" she gestured towards Marrow with a tilt of her head "He's got the sense to behave himself at least, more than can be said for a number of the more aggressive flits about the place" she said, more to herself than Bereck "got them well trained i've heard" now this comment was directed at the man. He only repeated what her healers told her and she huffed ever so slightly. "Still... i'm sure you're feeling restless yourself" she sighed, and gingerly bent to extend a hand towards the fat flit "if you want up, then come on, can't stay here forever" she said quietly to Ichor, smiling a little.

Bereck rather wanted to say something sharp about Marrow being quite justified in defending his territory but even as it played through his mind he knew it was foolish, based only on his personal dislike for the woman, and so he didn't voice it. The gold stopped hissing anyway, and Marrow soon did too.
As Kindra reached down to Ichor Bereck shifted slightly against his pillows, trying to get comfortable again while she was distracted. Her kindly manner with the dim firelizard caught him a little off guard, though it didn't show as his face was already set hard to hide pain. He supposed even a woman such as this had her humanizing aspects though, Kindra might be an entitled deluded superior little girl who had no right to the power she possessed but that didn't make her evil.
Ichor climbed up onto the gold rider's hand and Bereck settled again.
"Of course they're well trained," he replied rubbing his thumb in between Vena's wings, drawing a soft chirr of pleasure from the dainty beast. "I do not believe in keeping pets that don't have a purpose, and I can't stand a badly trained one," he elaborated. Restless. Of course he was restless, being more or less confined to bed again was a nightmare. At least this time he could get up and walk far enough to take care of... necessities, and didn't have to rely on others to wash him and even feed him. Looking back on those days still made him feel sick inside.
Bereck made a vague noise and gave an almost imperceptible shrug. "I don't lie around here for my own amusement, certainly.... What was it you wanted, Kindra. I presume your visit must have a purpose?"

Kindra gave Ichor a little stroke along her headknobs, not wanting to coddle someone else's pet. Before her own four she wouldn't really have even bothered but knowing a pet yourself made you think differently about other's flits. When Ichor climbed onto her hand she sat back gingerly, resting against the chair back once more, moving her hand over to let Ichor get off and onto the bed. "Wish everyone thought the same Bereck, too many flightly, untrained things" she murmured, watching the Green with a slight smile.
Well .. that was abrupt, for a second Kindra was taken aback at the bluntness of it. "No, no you're not" she mulled his question over for a second, did she have a valid excuse for coming? .... "I just wanted to make sure you were alright Bereck, i was told about the wher... and the one at Malvren, You were the most hurt out of everyone i think, but i did some checking in on the others that were hurt at Holdtown, you were unconcious so i waited til you were a bit more aware to come see how you were" there, no excuses, no ulterior motive... though she'd tried to think of a reason.. what was the point.

As she was placed on the bed Ichor made a little 'brrrk?' noise and looked around with some confusion. After a moment however she spotted Bereck and gave a little squeak of delight as she bounce-fluttered over to land next to Vena in his lap.
As the round green landed Bereck laid a hand gently over her back, now watching Kindra almost warily. He did not trust her apparently kind motivation in the least, and thinking about the whole thing full of whers and pain and terror made him edgy in the first place which didn't help. Her sudden interest in him couldn't possibly be a good thing though, regardless of her reasons.
"Well I am as you find me and I will improve," the healer said eventually, stiffly. "That whole thing was a complete disaster," he added, "Natai has long been lost to Trine. I don't know why whoever planned that one thought descending on her on mass would work, unless it was supposed to be intimidation? Humph, regardless, Trine's presence served only to infuriate the wherholders. She might have refused both parties and gone on her way without violence had the factions not met."

Kindra nodded when Bereck continued. "I'll say" she muttered, mostly to herself. "I couldn't give two wherry shits about that coward Natai, she fled while the rest of us defended HER home" she snapped, irritated at the reminder. "it was most certainly not MY idea to even approach her, she made her intentions clear the one and only time i met with her" her nose wrinkled in distaste but one thing was clear from Bereck's words, the Goldrider hadn't joined with the Wherhandlers. "At least she didn't add to the invasion at Benden" she said quietly to herself, trying to calm her annoyed mind, this wasn't what she'd intended when coming to see Bereck, she'd only wanted to see how he was healing, not get into ANOTHER discussion about that twice blasted Brat of a girl.

Bereck scowled darkly and shook his head. "Don't delude yourself girl you weren't fighting to protect her home, you were fighting to protect yourself and kill your enemies. Remind me of the part where you or anyone else for Trine stepped in to defend anyone from her Hold? They didn't require it because they weren't the target. You were, you and Narisa and Mercy. I don't appreciate you calling her a coward either, it wasn't her fight. It shouldn't have been anyone's. There's no honour in killing, or in being killed stupidly."
That had been quite a lot of talking, and a little worn out by it Bereck let out a slow breath and shook his head. "And no, she did not, she can't stand violence." Something he shared with her, a large part of his reason for wanting to get as far away from Trine and its new methods as possible.
"Whose idea was it to use poison?" the healer asked after a moment. "Not yours again, I hope? It rather did away with Trine's moral high-ground, didn't it?"

Kindra bristled "I fought against those bastards to try and keep THEM from harming anyone ... Should i remind you that THEY began the hostilities?" she grumbled, tensing up "You might think little of me Bereck but i WAS taught to defend those that needed if before i even Impressed Suunath" she glared at him and behind her Fury hissed again but without a word Kindra sent her away, a flit fight was the last thing she needed right now.
"I'd do it again and again if the people under my protection as a Dragonrider were threatened Bereck.. don't you dare assume i had any other intentions .." She rubbed her face and sighed "At least SHE wasn't hurt.... "... wait what?!.... did Bereck think she'd been in on that disgusting plan? "MOST CERTAINLY NOT!" she bridled again, her good hand gripping the arm of the chair "It's a low down dirty trick ... at least if i'm fighting someone i do it face to face" she curled her lip in an echo perhaps of her Dragon had Suunath been awake "I spoke up against it and was over-ruled" she was absolutely disgusted with that plan, "No honor in something like that... it hurts innocents as well as those that are out enemies... just... disgusting"

Bereck remained mainly impassive in the face of Kindra's anger, the slight pursing of his lips the only hint at emotion. "That may be true," he said levelly once she had finished speaking, "but you were not protecting her home; you were defending your fellow Trine riders, who were only in peril because they had descended upon Holdtown uninvited to try to drag Natai somewhere she didn't want to go. Let us be perfectly clear about this Kindra, the people of Natai's Hold were not in peril and therefore I cannot see any argument for calling her a coward. She abandoned a fight between two warlike factions she has no interest in joining, no more and no less than that."
At least it seemed Kindra hadn't been involved in the poisoning, he didn't believe that her reaction was faked. "I am pleased to hear that you were opposed to it," he continued. "It was a foolish gambit, it can only escalate the violence and put parties disgusted by violence ever more in opposition to Trine and wherholds alike. Trine is not making friends for itself on the world's political stage... though so far as I can tell the world hasn't wanted much to do with Trine, Benden or Malvren since..." Bereck's lips pressed tighter together and he made a vague gesture with one hand. "Events."
It hadn't been a revolution, it had been a massacre.
"Don't think for a moment, Kindra, that because I disapprove of Trine's actions of late I have anything but contempt for the wherholds," the healer added in a soft undertone, shaking his head slowly and breaking eye contact for the first time since the discussion about Holdtown and Natai had begun. Instead of looking at Kindra he looked at the two firelizards in his lap, expression closed and unreadable.

Kindra listened, but while Bereck had many valid points she was Kindra after all and didn't back down easily, as was evident from her wounds "Had there been overspill against the Hold's peoples i would have defended those too Bereck, You fail to take into consideration that the Wherholders wouldn't have thought twice about killing Natai were they able, especially since, as you say, she had no wish to go with them anymore than she wished to be allied with Trine" before he could muster a reply "If they had harmed Natai in any way, her people would have come to her aid and WOULD have been in Peril... it was only riding Gold that saved her from it .. if she hadn't ordered a halt she couldn't have run away" her voice even now, losing it's indignant tone as she spoke.
"Trines actions of late.... have not been pleasant ... but they wouldn't have murdered Natai simply for choosing not to join us" She considered his other comments "Certain events that wouldn't have happened had it not been for the Wherholders, even if Trine had tried to stay out of these .... events as you put it ... with refugees from Benden and Malvren, how could it not be placed into this turmoil, especially given the Mystweed occurences that only Trine, Benden and Malvren seemed to have been in need of. Other weyrs can go shove their hidebound issues where Rukbat doesn't shine if they're not going to help"
She mulled over his last comment "No ... no i wouldn't expect anything else ... Trine may have been wrong in the poisoning but the matter stands that it's the Wherholders that have been the insitigators in most of this..." she sighed looking at him stroking his flits "What i wouldn't give to get Benden back ... and cleanse the stone of this... this........" she couldn't find a word strong enough for her thoughts on the Wherholders....
