If you're looking to join, but don't have a member, Mogami is holding a contest for two female members and one male.

IC Overview
For current weather conditions, herd movements, and pride location please see this post.

This occurs ICly shortly after Simosihle's questions on cubs.

The new Inselelo, Jasiri, is still on his way to the pride and will ICly be arriving one day following these cubs. That means Impoqo, Nahmba, and Kamal are absent.

It can be estimated that the pride is about a half-days hard walk from the Firekin outpost and have stopped for the evening. It is about an hour before dusk with a cool breeze. The pride is nestled on a high point in a grove of trees and thorn bushes.

Ulaka has been relatively absent from the group for a while, so all the females have seen the cubs coming from a mile away--this can be taken quite literally. Ulaka is going to show Gakere her strong litter, but in the open plains land nothing goes unnoticed and interception from the rest of the pride is inevitable.

The cubs will be just old enough to be able to make the trip back and have been given names. They won't be good at starting conversations as their vocabulary is small, and they are still probably quite clumsy and a little overwhelmed by all the new faces. If their appearance doesn't give it away, Ulaka has been bragging for months that she's carrying Gakere's cubs, so everyone should know the Umholi is the father.

All Your OOC Needs

This will be very free-run RP. There is potential for some mule-run action posts, but for the most part this is for your characters to discuss, gossip, chatter, and interact!

- - -

Guidelines and Info

  • Boneland's members of all ages are welcome to participate
  • Non-members: Boneland's members are likely to be overprotective of cubs. Your character will probably be attacked on sight! You may still make a post, but be forewarned that if your character tries to stay, they may become severely injured. Birds and small mammals (like rabbits) will likely go unnoticed, however.
  • Owners of cubs from this litter: You may post if you wish (once you have your cub's image), but keep in mind the IC information about their age given in the previous post.
  • If you want to submit an application for a member, a post in this ORP will count as a JRP!
  • You may join in at any point! You can always assume your lion was there the whole time, or just showed up to join later.
  • Posts from the mule/Kael will be made approximately every 48 hours to get everyone a chance to join despite any busy schedules or participation in events in other prides.
  • The final cub in the litter (below) will be raffled off to all those who participate. If you have a cub from this litter, naturally you may not win him, but are still encouraged to post!

- - -

The Prize!

Each post in this ORP is worth a ticket. When the ORP is closed, everyone's posts will be counted and a winner will be rolled. Everyone is eligible except people who already won a cub from this litter and the owners of the cubs' parents.

User Image

The colorist is Lithia_Brandon. If you win, please send a name to Kaelyndra. She'll be posting all the cubs for certs. You may give him away to a friend if you win, but let me know who so I can send them info!

The cub is male and has 4 other siblings: 1 male and 3 female. You will be PMed more information on both parents if you win.

Ulaka's Brief Personality
[[OOC: Ulaka is a Busisa, but she joined a few years ago, so any lion/lion who has been in the pride in that time will likely know of her and have a basic idea of this personality]]

Ulaka is a loud-mouth and a bit of a rumor-monger. However, all these chit-chats are done behind the other persons back. When it comes to encountering her object of discontent headon, Ulaka just can't do it. Rather, she'd just like to be the s**t-starter in the background and never get caught. Needless to say, this doesn't always work out so well. She is a slightly above average hunter, and doesn't mind watching cubs. Despite her rumor-monger tendencies, Ulaka does have a decent head on her shoulders, though she is startlingly traditionalist especially for a Busisa. She is the sister of one of the previous Umholi, but decided to stay when he was kicked out. She seems to have no shame in bragging about her cubs.

Five cubs.

They were far more difficult than she'd ever intended. Even at only 2 and half weeks old, they were constantly waddling away. They were starting to understand some semblance of stay here, and were beginning to capture the idea of danger and fear.

She'd rotated carrying them in her mouth, letting a few walk ahead and carrying two by their scruffs then switching them. It had taken a day to walk back to the pride, not because the distance had been far but because they stopped to cry, to nurse, to wash, to investigate that bush over there and --

"Hey, Impikelelo, get back here. We're going this way."

But, she could smell the other lionesses and she could make out a few browns and tans in the golden grass. They were close and already heads were raising and ears were swiveling to look towards the approaching Ulaka.

Despite that she was tired, dirty, and clearly rough around the edges, there was a large smile on Ulaka's face. She bumped her young, grey son on the rump and to send him in the correct direction and let all of her cubs pick their way through the grass on their own.

It wouldn't do to soil their clearly strong demeanor by carrying them now!

Next Ulaka post will be on Sunday, June 30th unless events dictate otherwise

Impikelelo trotted clumsily behind his mother; occasionally, something would catch his interest and he would slow, only to realize he was being left behind and speed up again. He wasn't overly sure where they were going or why but Mother seemed very excited about it so he was trying to be, too.

That plan was gone with the wind as movement flashed in the corner of his eye. A tiny greenish thing - a grasshopper, although he didn't know that - was springing away from the small troupe of lions. He turned off and stumbled after it, head stretched forward curiously.

It didn't take long for Ulaka to catch him, and her command instantly pulled him up. He may not have a firm grasp on talking, but he knew his name and he knew "here". In a brief moment of rebellion, he glanced back to where he had last seen the hoppy-creature; but it was already gone. With a "hmph", he padded back to his mother's side, the grasshopper forgotten in a heartbeat as his mother's tail swayed in front of his nose.

Thuli squinted her eyes at the approaching shapes, startled for only the brief time that it took for her to recognize Ulaka… and the little things that followed her. Even though it was to be expected, Thuli couldn’t contain her excitement.

“I think that’s Ulaka!” For a very long time, Thuli had been cultivating a tough, I-care-for-nothing exterior but it was hard to hide her excitement at the prospect of getting some new blood in the pride. She missed having tiny cubs around. Ulaka’s babies were also related to her – she was their aunt… well, half-aunt if such a thing existed – so she felt even more inclined to help out in every way she could. “I want to carry them…. Oh, I really want to carry them!” Dropping all pretense, the young lioness was grinning happily and swishing her tail from side to side.

Baie lifted her head with a curious expression when Thuli spoke, smiling a little when she spotted the little cubs following after Ulaka. She’d been gone for a while now and the orange lioness was starting to worry. Thankfully, it seemed everything had gone well.

Still, despite the predominant positive feeling, it gave her a strange sort of pleasure to note that Ulaka’s litter was a little smaller than her own had been. Once the Busisa was close enough, Baie would have nothing but congratulatory words for her but right she was quite content with the notion that the litter she’d had with Gakere was not only his first but also his biggest as well. Girls could be so petty sometimes, she mused to herself with a good dose of humor.

'Toboa had been lazing in the grass grooming herself, surrounded by the other lionesses. The day was winding down and so was the pride, relaxing in the subtle breeze and sharing tongues.

At Thulisile's excited squeal, 'Toboa's head snapped around. All of the lionesses had anticipated Ulaka's birthing but now it was confirmed - mostly by the tiny bundles of fur that tottered through the grass toward them. She rose to her paws, anticipation making her fur stand on end. She wanted to rush toward the approaching group - oh, how she loved cubs - but felt it better that she contained herself.

Instead, she padded over to Thuli and briefly brushed her flank against the ochre lioness' in greeting.
"Isn't this so exciting? New cubs are just the best thing that can happen."

-------

Kel's ears perked forward as he caught the sound of voices up ahead. Sniffing curiously, he could scent creatures up ahead - they smelled like Mom, but not like Mom. And there were a lot of them.

Nervously, he glanced up at Ulaka. She seemed calm - happy, even - so he tried to relax. He trusted Mother to keep them safe. Nonetheless, he veered closer to her and padded on with his fur brushing her legs, oblivious to the fact that he was probably making it hard for her to walk.
He wasn't sure what was going to happen, but whatever it was, he wanted to be near Ulaka.

Uthuli'Sathane constantly waddled between her mother's legs, frequently tripping them both up or getting little knocks on her forehead from a paw or a bump on her butt from Ulaka's tail, but she stubbornly refused (or complained vehemently when forced) to walk at a normal, personal-space-alotting distance. She'd taken to being more pouty once Ulaka stopped carrying them all in rotation. This was the pits.

The breeze was cold to a cub, which made her want to stick all the closer to her mother, the best heat source available, but Ulaka's longer legs and larger strides were making it difficult. The infant cub heard strange voices and saw figures off in the distance, and she cowered into her mother's leg, the same one her brother Kel chose, and she looked at him, concern riddling her face. Up until this moment, her world had consisted of her mother and siblings. She'd been convinced they were the only lions who existed. It was hard to comprehend the notion that she'd been wrong.

"--one day." Nombuso finished saying, a deep-throated purr rumbling while the Umzingeli brushed her forehead up against Awiki's chin. In return, the Busisa groaned and rolled her eyes, feigning interest for only a moment more before falling predictably silent. The two's conversation was held in hushed tones, although only because Awiki demanded it. Nombuso would have screamed her part at the top of her lungs if it meant more would join in on the coaxing and prodding, for the subject was and had been all about cubs. Lately, it was always a matter of cubs.

Yet, the interest the Umzingeli had in her darling Busisa's future offspring would be put aside, only momentarily, to direct her focus elsewhere. The commotion rippled through the pride until it captured Nombuso's attention--Ulaka had arrived, and much to her excitement, she was not alone. Awiki's maw was held ajar while a gentle panting shook the grass around her. While on most occasions the lioness would have gleefully participated in the welcoming of cubs; the freshness of the topic still weighed heavily on her mind. Nombuso, however, rose to her seat and with a squinted, emerald stare muttered, "Up, Awiki. Up!"

The command went without response. The peach female, instead, only straightened slightly in her side-long stretch and honed in on Ulaka's form. She had to admit, little ones were always a joy to have around. If only her older companion hadn't ruined the moment by insisting she bear the next litter.

Fortunately for the Busisa, the brown lioness was lovestruck. If they weren't scampering across the fields right before her very eyes Nombuso might have stayed by Awiki's side and urge her up and out. But there were cubs to be tended to. There. Were. Cubs. Finally! The overzealous female leapt into action, clearing the gap between herself and the sisters who had already begun the trek toward Ulaka. Slowing to rub against Thulisile's other side, offering her as well as Baie and 'Toboa an affectionate smile, Nombuso called out to the new mother.

"Bring them in! Closer, Ulaka!"

It had taken far longer than Dina had ever expected, but her daughter had recently gotten off her lazy behind and joined regular hunts with the other umzingeli. To say the least, Dina was relieved. She had pushed and pushed and finally Chazama realized that to live in the bonelands, everyone must pull their weight. In the end, it left the mother feeling much more affectionate with her daughter, and she more openly conversed on subjects that didn't involve Chazama's laziness. Now if only she could get her to drop that silly notion of sparring with the Firekin. Ugh.

Next to her mother lay Chazama, casually talking of the afternoon's gossip, at least the tidbits she had been able to overhear. Nothing particularly juicy, but it kept her mind off other matters. Such as her excitement to get back to the firekin outpost, where she'd be able to spar with the red giants once again. It was in the middle of a particularly long sentence when she saw some of their pride get to their paws, words such as Ulaka and cubs reaching her ears. Chazama beamed at her mother, dropping the topic all together. "Oh my! Come on mother, Ulaka's returned!" What a wonderful way to end the day.

"Hmm?" was Dina's initially response as she stretched and rose to her paws. As she swung her head around to look, she did indeed see Ulaka approaching in the distance, little bundles bouncing along next to her. A smile pressed against her maw and she bumped her forehead to her daughter's shoulder. "Lets go greet them," she offered, making her way to the rest of her pride sister's that had already gotten up to do just that.

She was beginning to fall asleep listening to the others talk. This and that and that and this and-- What was that sound? She flicked an ear, opening her eyes and looking over, before spying Ulaka. What was she doing...? Something else was moving the grass beside her... And then she spied the first cub.

Like the other lionesses, Mhisani sat up to look as Ulaka brought the cubs in. Her eyes lit up at the sight of them, before she positively squealed. "Ulaka, they're ADORABLE!" Tact? She had little. The pale lioness got up, stretching out before she went padding over to greet her fellow Busisa. She didn't feel particularly close to many of the other lionesses of the pride quite yet, but Mhisani found that the closest bond she had yet was with her fellow Busisa. She gazed down at the cubs, smiling broadly. "Gakere is strong in these cubs, Ulaka!" She then smiled at the lioness. "And so are you!"

Like her brothers and sisters, Isasa waddled along on the ground. The mist-pawed cub had about as much grace as any cub her age, looking around with big gold eyes. She hadn't missed it since their eyes opened - Only one of her brothers had the same eyes, eyes their mother didn't have. She could only imagine that her yet-mysterious father had the same eyes.

She suddenly stopped, dropping down with wide eyes as others approached. Who were these lions? Where had they come from? The grass was far too tall for any cub to see over, so to have several large felines suddenly appear was a shock. Isasa's fur bristled, making her rather comically puffy.

While normally a non-confrontational lioness, Ulaka certainly would have been the type to raise hackles at a herd of lionesses rushing her offspring. Luckily, most seemed to be able to contain themselves.

It didn't stop Ulaka's ears from going back when she heard Thuli's squeal. Pale blue eyes settled on the burnt yellow of the lioness. She over-protectively scooped the grey son into her jaws, holding him by the scruff of the neck--so much for maintaining their strong persona! It didn't hurt that he was no longer winding between her feet.

To say that worry crossed Ulaka's face would have been an understatement. She made a quick count of the remaining cubs, three times. Each time there were four, and when she looked up again, the first female was already there.

"Be careful," she advised as she carefully set Impikelelo down. Then, remembering who their father was, she added, "They may be Gakere's children, but they are still young."

Faced with the entire pride, Ulaka was remembering what it was like to be truly nervous. On the way here she'd been too busy imagining their delight to consider the possibility they might find the cubs too small, too loud, maybe one was sick. . .

A few moments later, she remembered to force away the raised upper lip that was twitching at part of her muzzle. Mhisani was maybe a little too close.

-

Nolaka, oblivious to the unrest, was trying to dive-bomb every single one of her siblings. She landed on Isasa's head and tore around her mother's leg before bouncing sideways to Uthuli.

Uthuli was puffed, and so the fur on Nolaka's back raised as well. The shadow hit her shortly later, and she looked up, a small spitting hiss coming out of her mouth.

User Image"Well done Ulaka," Buna called from her place in the shade under a bush. The cubs looked strong, and she was glad to see more offspring from their leading Umholi. Cubs were good news in any shape or form, really. Hopefully the girls would take after their mother and become good hunters! She rose to her feet and took a few steps closer to be able to see them better.

"You'll get the chance to carry them Thuli," Buna said to the enthusiastic Lusizi. She then noted the face Ulaka made, "But maybe later... Give the little ones some space. You might even get to take them to their first hunt when it's time, just like Ulaka helped you learn."

Raising cubs wasn't a job for just one lioness after all. If everyone helped the little ones would have a better chance.

As lionesses began to emerge from the grass around him, the fur along Kel's spine began to spike. His ears flattened against his skull, but the lionesses didn't seem dangerous. As one reached out to sniff at them, he started to reach tentatively back when his mother lifted him by the scruff.

Startled by his mother's tension as much as the sudden grab, Kel fluffed up and hissed - a noise which probably only added to his cuteness. As soon as Ulaka put him down, he skittered backwards, away from the horde of lionesses. He couldn't quite decide what to do; Mother seemed both nervous and okay with the strangers. Should he hide? Or try to make friends?

Until she told him, he was perfectly content to watch from behind Ulaka's hind leg.

-------

'Toboa strode toward the cubs with the other lionesses, ensuring to stay far enough back to keep Ulaka comfortable. She could only imagine the new mother's emotions, and she definitely didn't want to be at the receiving end should they spill over.

Padding up, she was about to sit down when one of the cubs - a rambunctious one, at that - collided with a sibling and tottered a little closer to the edge of the group than the others. It was all she could do not to stretch out her neck toward the young female. A good thing, too, as the cub spotted her and hissed.

It may have been one of the most adorable things 'Toboa had ever seen, but she knew that it meant the cub was scared, so she backed up a few paces and lay down. Maybe if she wasn't so big, the cub wouldn't be so intimidated. She blinked slowly at Nolaka.

"Welcome to the pride, little one. I am 'Toboa," she said softly. She wasn't sure if the young creature in front of her would understand her words, but she hoped she would understand the inflection and be comforted.

She didn't miss the look on Ulaka's face as she took a step back. "I'm sorry, they're just so adorable..." She noticed how many of the cubs were puffed up, offering them a smile. "Your daughters will make strong huntresses and their brothers strong males!" After all, Gakere wasn't exactly a little lion, or weak. Her current leanings may have been more toward the Inslelo, but that didn't stop her from appreciating Gakere for what he was - A strong male lion who was in the prime of his life. "Do they have names yet?" What were their little personalities like?

Isasa watched her brother get lifted up, then looked at the lionesses. They weren't attacking, so were they really that dangerous? She reached up a paw, swatting at the nearest big giant not-Mom's paw, testing to see what it was. Her eyes shifted, looking up at one lioness and then another. Some of them had markings like those of herself and her siblings... Why was that? She sat down, her fears overpowered by confusion as she looked at first her front legs, then the legs of a couple of the lionesses, before looking over to her brother that had been lifted and set down. Why did so many of the lionesses have their leg markings?!
