Dyakida had a project. In fact, she had several new projects. It seemed she was constantly busy now- she had a feeling that Yansa had pulled some strings.
Dyakida refused to let her down. She would make items worthy of any warrior. These were items that would save and take lives; Bows, spears, staves, swords... these were the soul of her sisters.
She had little time to think on the weapons that her sisters did not use, though she wished she did. Surely, their weapons must have unique strengths and weaknesses and be interesting to craft. It would be a delightful challenge to learn how to do so.
But it would also detract from the four quiver's worth of arrows, two bows (one made especially for Ilyra to practice with), three spears, and the set of butterfly swords that she was commissioned to make. It was quite a season- many young prentices were becoming blades and needed quality weapons.
It was a lot of work and Dyakida was honored to do it... which was why she and Peyla were taking a break from her craft. Officially, she was gathering materials. Really though, it was a break because her head hurt, her hands hurt, and she just needed to move around a bit and shake herself out.
Okay, move around a good bit. She had decided to meander onto the well travelled path to Andile, and when Peyla had chirped about something of interest and flown up and away, Dyakida decided to climb the tree nearest to her Sprite's chittering and investigate. She climbed by feel, enjoying her muscles and the rough bark, her staff leaning against the trunk itself.
"What have you found, Peyla?" she called, trusting her guide. Peyla rarely led her wrong, and often found interesting things. Like soft kinfa feathers or stiff shield-like leaves or paper-thin yet sturdy pieces of insect wing. Each had its own properties, each had its uses in her craft. What had her sprite found this time?

Yaholo had been on his way to Andile, as per his usual daily ritual, and was coming along the path in his typical leisured fashion. Today had been a quieter day, meaning nothing crazy had happened yet, which made him feel both happy and wary as all hell. Something crazy always happened to him, every single day, no exceptions. He knew it was coming, whatever it was, and he was ready for it. What was it going to be this time? A raging animal? A pack of Spitorogs? An Alkidike climbing up a tree close to his head?
Wait, what?
"Whoa, I didn't see you there!" He said, having not seen Dyakida climbing up a nearby tree. She seemed to be climbing a little awkwardly, using her hands to get a better feel, and after looking her over a tad, he smiled. Her eyes were white and wide open, she was probably blind. "What are you looking for? Can I help?"

Dyakida paused on her handhold and frowned, turning towards Yaholo and twitching her antennae. Uh. She had been so busy figuring out how to climb the tree that she hadn't noticed his approach. Her antennae told her what she already knew now: There was someone here. "I didn't notice you myself" she said, regaining enough composure to pull herself onto a branch and sit there.
The other person had a deep voice. Male?
"What am I looking for? I'm not sure. My sprite may have found something, and I wanted to see what." She rested a hand on the branch, nudging it a bit. It seemed sturdy enough to take her weight for a while.
Peyla looked down, chiming impatiently. Stop taking so long! Why was her alkidike taking so long! She fluttered over to Dyakida and scolded before flying back to her 'prize', whatever it was. She paused. What was that? She fluttered down again, past Dyakida to Yaholo. !!! !!!! what was this strange alkidke-shaped thing?

Oh s**t, he pissed her off. Not like he hadn't already pissed off every Alkidike he knew, besides his mother and sister, but still. Couldn't he not make one of his sisters mad for once? He shook his head and smiled, at least this one was blind and couldn't judge him based on his looks... Could she...?
"Aaah, you were following your sprite!" He exclaimed, nodding along as she spoke. "I've heard that sprites are rather intelligent! It must be nice to have one to help you find things!" Then he squeaked, coming face to face with Peyla, and gave a rather cheery giggle. "Hello there, it's nice to meet you!" He said, moving a finger upwards to gently pat Peyla on the head.

Peyla knew the word intelligent and crooned and preened at the praise. She even let him touch her head. Nice-word man could do that.
He seemed... energetic. A little nervous. Oh by mother Aisha, had she somehow run into Biroki the inexplicably nervous Shifter again?! That would be an inauspicious start to her day. Being encountered in an embarrassing position was bad enough, but she really didn't want to deal with shaky men, or women she supposed. The idea of it gave her a headache and a brief flash of annoyance flickered over her face. But no- this man's voice was not the same. Nor was he the same sort of shrinking. He sounded... bold? Maybe? There was only so much you could read from a person's voice. "I was following my sprite, but now it seems she wants to pay attention to you." it was hard not to smile at the giggle.
Yes yes! Pay attention to her! Peyla gave him a regal pat on the head in return. See? She was good!
"I am Dyakida" introductions? Why not. "And you?" Not being a warrior, it would be good to stave off any chance of confrontation before it could begin. She assumed that it was an earthling she was dealing with, one she had never met before, possibly from a land she couldn't even dream about.

Yaholo was more than delighted with Peyla, she was a very interesting sight to see! He continued to pat her on the head and gave a chuckle when he received a pat of his own. Aw, she liked him! That was a good start! He marveled at her gray-blue coloring and white markings. She was a very pretty little sprite! Well, actually, she was the only sprite he had ever met, but that didn't mean she wasn't pretty. He smiled at her before turning his attention back to Dyakida.
"My name is Yaholo," He said, giving a slight bow towards her, which was a reflex he had learned to do whenever he was greeting another Alkidike. "It's lovely to meet you, Dyakida." He paused, gazing down the path he had been on, before continuing. "Do you live near Andile? I was heading there before I met you two lovely ladies." He chuckled. "If I may call you that."

Oh my. Lovely? Her? Well! She had to admit she liked being complimented. She couldn't exactly verify it, but being called lovely made her feel lovely, and that was a very good feeling to have. "And you too, Yaholo" she said, a little bit of laughter in her voice, "And you may call me whatever you wish, as long as it's complimentary, of course."
Peyla was practically glowing. She chimed happily. Did you hear, Alkidike-of-hers? She was lovely! And a lady! She crooned. She liked this man, she did she did! Oh! She had an idea! With a chime and a raised hand- she would only be a moment, mister nice halfbreed man- she zipped off to find something. It was around here somewhere!
Well this was going splendidly! Nobody was attacking each other and in her opinion that was how most things between Alkidikes and Earthlings should resolve. Not all the time, though. Otherwise she would be out of a job. She heard the sound of Peyla's wings zip into the distance and was caught between curiousity and wariness. Here she was with a stranger without her eyes. Where had the sprite gone off to...? "I live in Emeka with my sisters. I don't often go to Andile unless I have things to trade at the market." Her brow furrowed, "But why would an earthling be traveling there? He WAS an earthling, right? It was not exactly the best place to be if you were an earthling.

Yaholo paused, his eyes following Peyla as she zipped off. Had he upset her? Or had she seen something? He clutched his hammer warily and focused his attention towards where Peyla had flown off to. If there was something coming, he'd protect them!
Then his eyes snapped towards Dyakida again and blinked. She thought he was just an earthling! Oh, dear, now he'd have to explain himself. He sighed and rubbed the back of his head. "I'm half Alkidike, ma'm." He replied, his tone slightly nervous. "My mother and younger sister live in Andile and I travel from Tale each day to see them."

Half Alkid... oh. Oh. "I... see." she said, embarrassed. Not that there was any way to tell what he was from his voice, but she really needed to be less shy about feeling over people. She also needed to break the habit of pretending she wasn't blind. She was, and pretending didn't always end well, or at least in a dignified way. "I apologize. I thought that since your voice was male... It was a hasty assumption." She hoped she hadn't offended him, at least not too much. "Is that not a long way to travel each day? Why not make the trip every other day?" through the jungle, no less She had made the journey in a day, but that had been in a group of very focused Alkidikes during a very focused march. She suddenly realized she did not hear chimes. "Ah!" She reached out for him, just to maintain a sense of where he was. "Where is Peyla?" She asked. Not having the sprite around was difficult, but managable. Peyla was out of earshot, whistling happily to herself as she picked a small collection of pretty flowers. She had a good idea, she did! And maybe the very nice brown man would like it!

"Well, I suppose it is a long way to travel." Yaholo replied, shifting his feet a little. But if he didn't make the trip everyday, he missed out on seeing his Alkidike sisters and talking to his mother. He adored his mother, espescially when she joked about her missing leg and tell stories how his father used to be terrified of Spitorgs. Idly, he smiled, thinking about all of the funny things his mother had said since he met her, and only turned back to Dyakida when she reached out for him. Naturally, he took he hand and held it gently.
"I'm not certain where she went, she flew off about a minute ago." He shrugged. "Maybe she saw something interesting? I don't see anything dangerous or worth worrying about, either. Hopefully she's okay."

She did appreciate that he was holding her hand gently, not crushing it as some thought they had to do. "Ah. She... sometimes flies off. I wonder sometimes what goes through her head..." Peyla chimed a series of happy chimes as she fluttered back, flowers in hand. She saw Yaholo and with a multi-toned melodic shriek, she flew right towards him and stopped, hovering over his shoulder, the flowers held behind her. [!!!!!] she chimed, smiling at him, and then started trying to fix the flowers into his hair, just behind his antenna (and the stump of his antenna). After some work, she fluttered back and chimed, almost shyly. Did he like it? Was she... Blushing? Dyakida looked up at the chiming. "Is that her? Is she all right?" there was worry in her voice. Peyla was, after all, her eyes. "What is she doing?"

"I wonder that about my younger sister constantly..." He mumbled, idly. He twisted his neck this way and that until, finally, Peyla came back into view. What was she doing? He blinked a few times and grinned when she began to put the flowers into his hair. Awww! She was giving him flowers! What a sweet little sprite! He raised his free hand and patted Peyla on the head.
"These flowers are beautiful, Peyla. Thank you very much." He said, chuckling. Then, he turned his attention back to Dyakida, and motioned Peyla towards her. "You've worried Dyakida by fluttering off like that! I do appreciate the gift, but you shouldn't ever make someone worry about you. That's not a nice thing to do."

Normally, Peyla felt no shame. But when Yaholo said that her alkidike had worried, she felt sad. She crooned an apology. But... but he had to have flowers! She fixed a flower's position for a moment before touching Dyakida's hand. She looked at Yaholo. See, nice man? Peyla was sorry! Nice man should like Peyla!
Dyakida relaxed at the chime and the touch. Thank Aisha... she thought to herself. What would she do without her sprite? She didn't know, not at all. "Thank you for coming back, Peyla. That was very nice of you to bring Yaholo" she practiced memorizing his name "a gift." she smiled towards Yaholo, "She doesn't normally do that."
Peyla pouted and stuck her tongue out at her Alkidike. Well, who asked you?! Then she remembered that while her Alkidike couldn't see, nice man Yaholo could! Uh oh! She looked at him briefly and slowly put her tongue back into her mouth. She smiled innocently and patted Dyakida's hand again. See? See? She was good!
If only Dyakida knew what her sprite was doing. "Well..." she began, "Since that, at least, is resolved..." Thank Aisha she thought again, "Would you like to accompany me in finding more materials for my craft?" Since Peyla liked him, Dyakida might as well get to know him better. Also, Hybrid Alkidike had always been interesting, and she had never yet properly met a male alkidike. He must look very strange. she thought to herself.

"Oh, this isn't typical behavior for such a kind sprite?" He said, wagging his finger at Peyla as she stuck her tongue out at Dyakida. No, no, even if she couldn't see, that was still just as rude. Peyla could get into trouble for sticking her tongue out at the wrong person, too. She wouldn't want to get in trouble, would she?
Then, he turned his attention back to Dyakida and smiled. Well, he really didn't have to be in Andile for a little while, he could help out!
"I would love to help you, if you don't mind my company." He replied. "What is it that you're looking for?"

... Peyla was sorry.
"Your company would be greatly appreciated!" she said emphatically. It was true. Hybrids were fascinating to her, and she rarely met a half-alkidike. She did not hate them- how could she? They were her sibling, sister or brother or whatever they may be. But it was intriguing. And also company other than peyla was entertaining and she enjoyed talking as much as any person. "Well, I'm looking for small things today- crystals, interesting feathers, and a few oil plants. Of course, if I find larger things, like a good sized piece of wood or a crystal that I could make into a blade, of course I will attempt to take them with me." she said, smiling. Whatever the jungle provided. "Speaking of, what did Peyla find in that tree?" she asked him, curious. It was probably feathers, but feathers were useful.
