Yseult still had trouble determining why she had returned to the mazoku after Phibrizzo's threats. No, that wasn't true. She knew exactly why she had come back. Fear. It was not something Yseult was familiar with. She had been the strongest creature on her mountain. Nothing has posed a threat to her on her home. These mazoku were tricky though. If she so much as breathed wrong there was a very good chance that she would wake up with dozens of miniscule cuts all over her body especially at the joints so that she couldn't move comfortably. These cuts she was sure were the work of Hellmaster Phibrizzo who knew how to utilize his small sizes better than any soquili she had ever known. Phibrizzo wasn't even the end of her troubles. Lord Beastmaster was much more upfront about it and it seemed altogether likely that if she crossed the demon wolf-soquili that she would never wake or live just long enough to know the pain of having her insides on the outside. Xelloss was loyal to his "mother" and would slit her throat if she wished it of him.
None of these creatures she considered as troublesome as Xelloss's son Zelcion. He was the one who had gotten her involved in the first place and he enjoyed lording that over her. He seemed to enjoy mentally tormenting her more than inflicting physical pain. Why else would he bring his children of another mare around just to show how superior they were to anything she might have produced. 'They have good claws for scratching and slicing.' He had told her once. 'They are beautiful, like you could never help to be.' 'They are better than you, far better than you could ever hope to be.'
Mazoku were unfeeling but they knew what emotions were. They knew exactly what words to wield to cause the most damage. Yseult was not mazoku. She was strong. She was a kalona. She was everything many creatures wished they could be but such jabs at her pride were painful. She had always hoped to produce strong children herself and that had been ripped from her harder than her freedom.
Yseult wandered about the main gathering areas of the mazoku looking worn down. She was battling herself again, as worn down as she was she still resisted the mazoku ruling over her life. She didn't want to flee like a coward but she could not stay any longer. Her life was leaving her. Someday soon she would be nothing more than an obedient husk if she stayed. Really she imagined that this was exactly what the mazoku were after. Obedient subordinates. They didn't need strong leaders. They already had those. They needed sheep to slaughter or hounds to send on a chase. They needed empty creatures. It was nothing that Yseult wanted to be.

Zelcion had been watching Yseult wander around for quite some time but he made no move to approach her. ‘Watch her.’ Phibrizzo had told him. First he had given Zelcion the message years ago and then months and then only days ago. He hadn’t needed to give Zelcion any further instruction. Zelcion knew exactly what he was watching for. He was watching for signs that she may try to leave or disobey. Any time he saw such signs he was to break her spirit or tell Phibrizzo and let him. When Zelcion had been younger he had admired Yseult’s fire but now he was beginning to recognize that it was a problem for his Lords. Zelcion had been too young to have such a strong-minded servant. He had not been capable of reigning her in. She had gotten too comfortable in her position at his side where he had kept her like a trophy to lord over his brothers.
Zelcion understood this now. He understood how to properly play with fire. How to keep it at a distance but at the same time, bring it near. He had learned all of this from Lilith. She was a strange mare that had caught his attention with her looks and strange manner. He had not meant to produce children by her but they had turned out to be fine specimens. Her claws had blended in nicely with his kalona jaws and spaded tail. Their children were beautiful weapons and worthy of the mazoku name. He had realized quickly that they were something of a sore spot for Yseult. It seemed she had gotten the wrong idea about where she fell in his life. Phibrizzo had wanted her broken, Zelcion had found the means.
To an extent it was disturbing how easily Zelcion had thrown insult after insult at the mare he might have considered a friend were he a caring creature. He had watched her slowly change from furious to regretful over time. He still wasn’t sure what it was she regretted but he could see it all over her face and in her eyes. Her flame was beginning to go out. She wouldn’t burn brightly anymore and that was exactly what his lords wanted. He never should have let her think that she was somehow better than the other servants just because she was his. If he had been smart none of this would have needed to happen.
It was too late to stop it now. “Yseult.” He called smoothly as he stepped out from his hiding place. His usual narrow-eyed smile remained firmly set on his face. “You don’t look at all well. Trouble sleeping last night?” The casual words rolled of his tongue easily as though he hadn’t been spending all of his time hurting her. It was cold. It was cruel. It was wrong. It was mazoku. It was what ran in his blood, a darkness beyond twilight.

Yseult’s entire body stiffened at the familiar sound of Zelcion’s voice. There had been a time not so long ago that she would have been pleased to hear him but not now. Bracing herself for what was surely going to be a slew of insults Yseult turned slowly to face the pale maned stallion. She had to be careful with what she said now or a physical attack may very well follow unfriendly words.
“Yes, I couldn’t find a comfortable position.” She replied monotonously. She made no comment about the mysterious new cuts she had now nor did she mention the constant feeling of terror that was hanging over her like a fog bank. No, she couldn’t mention these things. If she did it would only open the floodgates for more criticisms. Criticisms she couldn’t hear without wanting to rip the head off of the stallion she had once wished to bare the children of.

A strange expression settled on Zelcion's face at her answer. It was some mix of wonder and contempt. He knew what his kind had been doing to her and he knew that she knew that he knew this. To answer in such a way it almost sounded like she had given up already and now she was just playing along. If she really had then that meant Zelcion no longer needed to hound her to beat her down every step of the way. He would be free to go about his life and she would be given some task to fulfill. That would be the end of it. Wouldn't that be just perfect? She would be just some broken little puppet not the hot-tempered mare he had once known. She would be everything the mazoku needed and he would have done well by them.
He had to perform the test. Zelcion absolutely had to know for sure that she really was done fighting them. He needed to know that if they sent her away she would either return to them or die for them.
"S...servant." He said struggling to place authority into his voice at first. Eventually he found it. This was a test Phibrizzo had devised. A way to make certain that one as proud as Yseult really was theirs. "I stepped in something earlier. Find out what it is." Zelcion tapped his foot on the ground to indicate which she was checking, the only thing on hoof was mud but that wasn't the point of the test.

Yseult's ear twitched slightly. Servant? She had been called that many times by Phibrizzo but this was the first time that Zelcion had opted for the term instead of her name. It didn't sound like him. The nature of his order didn't sound like Zelcion either. He had given Yseult meaningless tasks before but he'd always kept himself out of them, perhaps out of fear that she would attack him like a rabid wolf. Was this an improvement? Did this mean that her torment was coming to an end or was it only going to get worse from here? She could not tell, all she knew was that now Zelcion was treating her like all the others. Perhaps they had been trying to break him as much as they had been trying to break her. It had been working.
Yseult stepped closer to Zelcion and looked at his foot as she stood. There wasn't anything there. She looked at Zelcion preparing to say such a thing only to find him watching her expectantly. This was a test. There was a flash of recognition in her eyes before she looked once more to Zelcion's hoof. A test. She could feel her blood burning in her veins. It wasn't a test, it was a humiliation plain and simple but if she wanted this to end it was something that needed to be done.
Slowly Yseult lowered her head to look at Zelcion's hoof close and personal. Humiliation. Her jaw tightened but she managed to keep the tension out of her voice. "There is only mud...my lord...perhaps whatever you stepped in has already come clean." What was the usual price to end such torment? Was it ever worth it? Yseult did not lift her head. She couldn't. If she looked at Zelcion's face she knew she would rip it off. She would tear out his heart and deliver it to his father and grandmother. She would make them all pay for this but not now. They needed to think that they had won.

Zelcion watched Yseult carefully as she registered the command. It took her longer to act than most servants would but she was adjusting. He understood that. It didn't need to be reported to Phibrizzo. She would get faster with each command. The important part was that she followed the order. She placed herself at his feet, this mare with a pride as fierce as his own was bowing before him checking for debris. Seeing it didn't make him grin like Phibrizzo said he would. He felt nothing but wasn't that the mazoku way? He had taken the brightest fire he knew and had beaten it down so much that not even cinders remained. He had won and he felt nothing.
"Very good, Servant. That is all." Zelcion said turning away with a sharp flick of his tail. He would report in to Phibrizzo. Their task was complete. Yseult was as tame as a newborn kitten now. She would be easy to control and Zelcion found he could no longer look at her. It was disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.
