The lands were vast, but Anzu had never really put aside the time to patrol them on a regular basis before now. There had been little reason too, after all, before now, so long as any interlopers didn't cross his path he didn't really care if they trespassed through his woods. With the building of the nest though, and the prolonged absence of his only other regular guard, Unnr, he felt it was necessary to take up patrol of the lands himself and begin securing the lands for the herd which would eventually come to occupy them. After all, if he waited for good news from Tziporah it may be too late to start. There may be too many other duties to attend too. It was simply better to make sure everything was in order well ahead of time.
He'd sent ahead his two ravens, Branwen and Korax. They would be able to fly undetected through the trees and return with news of any unwanted presences. Anzu himself carried far too much bulk to be able to sneak up on others easily. No, stealth and long chases where out of the question. If he were to take down the intended quarry on his own he would need to make use of ambush, or gain their trust until he could close the gap enough for a charge or have his ravens do it for him. Again, his ravens came in handy for such tactics. On more than one occasion they had harassed a victim until they panicked and ran toward Anzu's waiting jaws.
If no trespassers were found, they would use similar tactics on the nearby wildlife to bring back to Tziporah at the nest. Normally Anzu expected her to hunt on her own, often he even expected her to bring a portion of her kills back for him. But if these patrols were going to become a regular occurrence, he would do well to practice his rather rusty skills on anything he could find.
From ahead came a caw he recognized as originating from Korax. An alert which to an unsuspecting individual would blend in to the regular beat of the woods. A moment later Branwen came gliding toward him, then fluttered down to land on his mane.
"Tell me, my faithful one, what do you see?"
"A regular old earth stallion," she answered. "No match for you, my lord."
"How far?"
"Barely out of hearing range," if a crow could grin, she would have been.
"I am familiar with this area. There is a dip to the side of the path a little ways to the north. Go back to Korax and prepare yourselves to drive him toward me."
She nodded in agreement then took off, flapping at first, then gliding through the trees back to where her mate was waiting. Anzu turned, and doing his best to stay quiet, made his way through to woods to the place the stallion would pass by.
