The door made a slow creaking noise as Sweet Surrender softly shut it behind him. He hoped he didn't wake up mom and dad. Being the horrible son that he was, he had forgotten that tomorrow was Father's Day, and had to sneak out in the middle of the night to try to find a present for TACO. He was sure all of his siblings had already bought gifts, they were far better at planning things than he was. They were better at everything than he was. He had to make up for this by finding the coolest present ever, but he wasn't sure what was going to be open at this time of night. The world looked different after curfew. He had never been out alone in the dark before. It was both scary and exciting all at once. Surrender stalked though the streets of Phonyland, in hopes of finding something and getting home before anyone knew he was gone.

There was somebody else out in the dark that night. Tiger Balm peeked around the corner of the main street, eyeing any other late night adventurers and hoping there was nobody that would recognize her. The little Flutter had found a pink wig at the store that morning and she was wearing it now. Not the best disguise, but it might pass at a distance. Her destination was just around the corner. One of the few shops open at this time of night; the pharmacy gleamed, big and bold. Tiger Balm sighed. There were many things her herbs could do, but what they couldn't, she had to rely on modern medicine. She hated it, but she could hardly do her job properly without those extra supplies. But she didn't want to admit that out loud and she certainly wouldn't want to ruin her reputation as a heal-all. The coast looked clear and Tiger Balm darted around the corner.

The movement caught Sweet Surrender's eye. A pink maned, blonde tailed Phony dashed across the street. He froze, unsure of what to do. It was possible that they were up to no good, and could be about to break in and rob someone's home. It was also possible that it was more innocent, and they forgot a gift for their dad too. It wasn't the smartest idea he had ever had, but Sweet Surrender decided to follow them and find out for sure what was happening. Slowly he crept and tried not to attract any attention to himself. Slowly, slowly, slowly, CRASH. Ung.... he had messed something up again, and walked right into someone's trash can. He could add sneaking to the list of things he wasn't good at.

CRASH! Startled by the sound behind her, Tiger Balm skidded to a halt and whirled around to face down whatever was making a ruckus. It must be a cat, her first thought had been, but instead she was staring at another Phony. A guilty looking Phony. Her abrupt about-face had dislodged the wig and it hug awkwardly sideways as she stalked over to the purple-haired boy. "What are you doing?" She demanded.

"ME?! I'm-I'm-" Sweet Surrender stuttered. He couldn't admit he was a horrible son on top of being a horrible sneaker. There had to be something better he could say he was doing; something he could make up. "I'm trying to find my stray cat, Puce. Yeah, he, um, got out, and I have to catch him and make sure he stays inside from now on." That sounded legit. Puce loved TACO too much to run away from home, and he really did just hang out inside, but getting out was something most cats did. It seemed like a logical excuse to be out at night. "Wait a second, what are you doing?" he demanded back while trying to keep a straight face as her wig slid to the side.

"Oh yeah?" Tiger Balm narrowed her eyes at him but the story seemed like it could be true. But there was still something fishy about his answer. He was looking very shifty. Her suspicions had to be put aside as she struggled to come up with a plausible reason for herself to be skulking around. Tiger Balm gave him her best indignant look, ruined somewhat by the wig sliding ever further off her head, and said, "it's none of your business." Perfect.

None of his business? Didn't that mean that his business was then none of her business also? He was suddenly upset with himself for not thinking of that right away. Surrender really didn't have to tell her anything, but he had already lied, so now he had to stick to the story. But It nagged at him that something still wasn't quite right about the whole situation, and he pressed for more information, "What if it is my business? You could be a burglar in that silly disguise, and might be on the way to rob my house right now! I am innocently looking for a lost cat; only someone up to no good would be acting as guilty as you are." His chest puffed up, if he kept this up, maybe his purpose in life would be to be a hard-nosed detective.

"I am not acting guilty," she hissed, probably looking very guilty indeed. But she also looked ready to give him a good wholloping if he kept prying. "Do I look like a thief? Besides, I bet your house doesn't even have anything worth taking."If she wanted to get to pharmacy before it closed, she needed to get rid of this guy soon. There was only one thing to do. "I'll help you find the cat," she decided, giving a scowl that suggested she would not take well to arguments. She straightened the wig with a hoof. "What does it look like?"

He cowered from her tone. This filly was kind of scary when she got upset. He wasn't going to ask her about being a thief anymore. One shakedown, and his short detective career was already over. And now he had the problem that he was trapped in his lie. He could describe his lost cat, but they'd never find him unless they went looking under his bed instead of in the streets. Surrender looked down, clearly guilty, "My cat is light pink with white flowers on his body. Sometimes he wears a purple wig and a pea green cape to look like my dad, but I don't think he had it on tonight."

A long silence followed the description. "Your cat," she eventually repeated, eyes narrowed in disbelief, "wears a wig and cape."

Of all the elements of his story that were strange, that is what she didn't believe? "Yes, that's the true part." Sweet Surrender's eyes went wide. "I, um, I mean all of it's true, especially the part about my cat wearing a wig." He gulped loudly. "Well, I guess the cat's out of the bag.... I mean, I need to tell you the truth. I wasn't out looking for my cat; I was out buying a Father's Day gift for my dad because I'm a really horrible son and forgot all about it until now. I'm really sorry that I lied to you."

Tiger Balm gave a very big sigh for a very small girl. It was her turn to come clean too. "Yeah well, I'm actually going to the pharmacy." She glowered at him, as if expecting some sort of gasp of surprise or dismay. "And you're not horrible, so you'd better hurry up and get your dad a gift before everything closes."

Sweet Surrender smiled. He wasn't horrible? That made him really happy to know! "Maybe if I go to the pharmacy with you, it won't be that bad? I kind find a gift for him there, and that way neither of us has to go anywhere alone tonight." ((One post from you, and we should be done?))

"Sure..." The scowl finally dropped away and Tiger Balm gave a little smile. "Let's make it quick."
