Vespasian smiled as he walked out into the green, grassy fields of the meadow. Summer was his favorite of the seasons: he loved the feel of the warm sun on his wings, the bright flowers, and the deep, rich greens of the grass. The stormy springs had passed, leaving such a calm and happy feeling in the air.
Indeed, Vespasian believed he a lot to be very happy about. Finally, his beautiful and kind lifemate, Aishwarya was heavy with foals - his foals - and he could finally be the father he always wanted to be. He had been a father once before, with a skittish and shy mare named Satine, but to his dismay that relationship didn't work out, and he found himself feeling unfulfilled.
But today was a new start - his new children would be here soon, and he could make up for the mistakes of the past.

Faris landed in the meadow, surveying the surroundings. For the first time in his life, he wasn't wholly comfortable with the idea of being away from his 'home' for too long. He never really had a home to call his own - not really. His parents seemed blissful enough, but he always felt a strange bitterness towards them. Sure, it was easy for them to just throw their cares into the wind, but what did that leave him?? He was the one who had to actually bear that badge of shame - being some kind of freak. He wore the horn of the unicorn but the wings of the demon Kalona. Proof positive that he was never supposed to fit in anywhere.
But then he had met....her. This strange, alluring, alarming vixen named Miyuki that changed everything. It was suddenly he felt like someone truly understood him, and for the first time he was beginning to understand exactly why his parents might have thrown that caution into the wind.
He shook his head - too heavy of thoughts for now. He had a mission to do - his dearest would probably love some apples or other fruit he could sniff around in the meadow. Blackberries maybe? He began to snuff about in the long grasses before even noticing another figure across the stream. Faris blinked and narrowed his eyes - this stallion was sported four wings - an angeni his mother would call them. He tilted his head up in acknowledgement.

Vespasian watched the other stallion land in the meadow and began to sniff around for something. He tilted his head in curiosity, he was an interesting looking fellow. He had a glimmering golden unicorn horn but the wings of a kalona; unikalona were fairly rare in these parts. Vespasian smile and wondered what may have happened between the two parents to create such an interesting mix. He had heard of 'nice' or downright friendly Kalona, but he had yet to ever meet one. All the Kalona he had come across had been pretty nasty in his experience.
"Hello there," he offered, trotting over closer to him.

"Hello," he said, looking a bit weary. He wasn't particularly good at introductions; skittish and unsure how others would react. Some Soquili didn't even seen to notice his mixed features, but others saw them as some kind of mark of shame. Especially these winged angeni... perhaps they would be particularly judgmental. After all, aren't they supposed to be all high and mighty?
He tossed his long, wrapped braid over his shoulder and nodded, but failed to match the winged stallion's warm smile.

Vespasian nodded politely. The nobility was strong in his blood, and while that did tend to give him a sense of entitlement and the certainly that he was in a higher class than most 'typical' Soquili, he was polite to a fault. "Beautiful weather we're having, yes?" he said, trying to make small talk. He eyed the other stallion, thinking to himself that he looked a bit shifty. He made a mental note to be cautious, but unlike many Soquili of his kind, he wasn't overly adorned with trinkets and jewelry.
"The summertime is my favorite," he said, continuing. "Season, that is. The colors are all so beautiful, don't you think?"

Faris shifted on this feet, wondering why this Angeni was talking to him. Was he being sarcastic? He tried to read his tone, he knew his types were prone to be able to insult you to your face while hiding it as a compliment. But Faris was not good at reading others, so he was unable to decipher if the lack of sarcasm came from a genuine politeness, of it he was just unable to tell.
"Weather's good for flying," he finally settled on. "Trying to find some fruit for my lady." He wasn't sure if he had gotten too personal with that last bit, but it seemed harmless enough, right?

Ah, romance! This was something that Vespasian was happy to talk about. "What a splendid gesture!" he said with a jaunty flap of his upper wings. "I tell you want, that's a marvelous idea! Come this way, I saw an exceptional batch of blackberries back this way when I was flying in," he offered, trotting towards the east. He looked over his shoulder to make sure his friend was following him.
"Would you know, my Lady Love is expecting!" he said, thrilled to have an excuse to brag. "Do you have foals?"
He paused, smiling, "My name is Vespasian. A pleasure to meet you," he said with a bow of his head. "I'm sorry, I was so excited I got ahead of myself. Please forgive my rudeness."

He hung back for a second, surprised by how genuine this stallion seemed to be. He seemed to be in an exceptional chipper mood, but when he announced he was having foals of his own, well, in a way I support that explained it. After a few paces, he followed him...after all, getting her some blackberries is what he came here to do.
"Oh, no," he said quietly. He almost added a 'not yet' but decided against it. He didn't know if he was ready for foals of his own... but the fact that Miyuki even made him consider them was quite a feat. He felt his ears stinging at the thought.
"Congratulations," he said, almost as an afterthought to the expecting father.

"Thank you, thank you," he said, holding his head high and allowing himself a smug smile. "I cannot wait to meet them. They will be perfect, I tell you. You should see my mate, Aishwarya. She's such an exotic beauty! Beautiful purple fur, and long, thick black hair. Henna as pure as gold I tell you. Do you know henna?"
He paused again, waiting for him to catch up. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name."

Let me tell -you- about exotic, he thought to himself, but didn't interrupt. Miyuki was certainly unlike any Soquili he had ever met, even in all his travels. It wasn't until he brought it to his attention, lost in his own thought, that he hadn't said his name. He tried to hide the sneer on his face, but obliged. "Oh, sorry. My name is Faris."
He flipped his braid again. "No, sorry, I don't know 'henna'."

"Henna...." he started, closing his eyes and picturing his beautiful, radiant mate in his head. "Its like paint... the most intricate, detailed, exotic paint. Painted on yourself - well, on the wearer, you see, in these incredibly beautiful and complex patterns." He opened his eyes, looking back over at Faris, noticing the gold on his horn and some of his jewelry. "Imagine gold... liquid, metallic gold. And from far away it makes shapes - big beautiful exotic flowers and birds! But up close... up close its just these lacy, detailed, crazy patterns."
He nodded, finally satisfied with his explanation of the strange henna. "She was born with hers, like a tiger is born with stripes. But in some places in the world they actually paint them. The two-leggers, that is, though I imagine there are some Soquili with enough talent with a paint brush to try their hoof at it."

"Sounds pretty." Faris was a Soquili of few words, so he didn't really know what else to add. He thought to himself that it sounded like something his mother would like; though he chose not to bring her into the conversation. She often spoke of her old life from across the ocean and across the land; where she was corralled in flowered and plush pen, brushed by an adoring collection of two-leggers, bathed in perfume and oils, and draped in the finest silk and jewels in the world...
...as a colt Faris has often thought his mother foolish for leaving it all. As a young stallion he thought that maybe she was just making up; for surely no one would leave such a life of luxury for any reason, especially one as abstract as love. But then he met Miyuki...

"That's an understatement," he corrected him, but kept his tone and smile warm. "Ah, well, I wish you could see her. She's radiant right now. Expecting the foals and all. I don't want her to lift a hoof until the babies are all here safe and sound! It's maddening; this waiting. I'm sure you'll find out soon enough," he said with a wink and knowing smirk. "I'm sure I've been talking your ear off..." he gathered, realizing very rapidly that this stallion was far from a chatterbox. "I don't mean to keep you from your tasks, of course. Mr. Faris, it was such a pleasure to meet you! Fates be willing, maybe we will cross paths again sometime? By then I can talk to you all day about my foals, hopefully! Maybe together, yes?"

Faris couldn't help but feel relieved. He didn't want to be rude, he just wasn't much of a conversationalist. Especially with someone as seemingly warm and bubbly as this noble Angeni. At least he wasn't abrasive or snotty like he was worried he may have been. But Faris didn't have much to say about his mate or expecting foals. And he certainly wasn't very comfortable talking about himself.
His mention of meeting again…with foals of his own. He didn't know exactly how that made him feel. It was a scary thought, but it wouldn't have been long before that he would have been abjectly disgusted by the idea. "It was nice to meet you," he got out, pulling himself from his thoughts before the Angenia flew away. As much as Faris wasn't a social butterfly, there was no reason to be rude.
No use burning bridges before you're even gotten to the river, after all.
