『 Location: Makai xxxxxxx|↳ Makai Academy ; the Library 』
It was a rare day.
Not only had he completed every single assignment, he was not due for work for a couple days - not that he was exactly pleased with the latter. He only worked as an on-call extra, meaning his weekends were never predictable. Either he would be called in and would make some money, or he would suddenly be left with nothing to do for two days.
And there he was: sitting at a desk in the library, rapidly tapping his pen against the desk, with nothing to do. Red eyes stared listlessly out the window, watching the few, sparse clouds float by. It was lovely out, sunny and warm, with a slight breeze. Still, he felt better to be cooped inside the library, surrounded by his only friends.
Books.
The library was quiet, which he liked. He had his own little table by the window, which he would normally occupy until late into the night. Today, however, he just didn't feel that into it. He didn't feel like reading, and that was a strange feeling for the Majin. What did he want to do, then?
Yun quickly straightened in his chair, looking shocked.
"My god," he muttered, voice trembling slightly, "I... have no hobbies."
He slumped back down and stared at the table; although he could keep his cool and appear nonchalant the vast majority of the time, there were... moments. And this was one of them. He had no real hobbies. He didn't even have any friends, although many had tried to befriend him. Something about appearing dark and brooding seemed to be extremely attractive to people. He liked the exceptions - the ones who left him alone, like he wanted - more.
Then again, his stubborn refusal to get to know people was what landed him where he was, now. Bored out of his mind and nothing to do on a weekend. His days were so predictable, the only surprises he got were being called in to work or surprise exams.
Yun sighed and slid even farther down his chair, head bent forward. His mop of bangs covered his face, mouth bent into a frown.
Maybe he would just take a nap. He'd fallen asleep in here before... not that it had ended well. He didn't feel like slipping into that labyrinth again.

Alezea stomped her way across the long hallway that led to the library. The day was just beginning and Alezea had already lost half of her allowance. Let's just say it wasn't exactly her luckiest day.
Good thing daddy is rich...
She missed her dad, but ever since he dropped her off at the academy he has been busy with all kinds of meetings and special trade missions. She couldn't blame him; someone had to feed her addictions. He was partially to blame for them anyway; he was the one who gave her the beloved dice for her 10th birthday.
Her dice... ever since she came to the academy and imbued them with magic they haven't been exactly...lucky. They were a constant source of embarrassment for her, but she refused to give up on them. Losing two bets in a row had her fuming. "I need to figure out a way to get them to be more accurate! Losing is not an option!" She had started looking over the book she had "acquired" at the library. But every time she opened the book to read she found herself dozing off. It wasn't a spell within it; books did that to her.
One day she managed to stay awake long enough to read about a deck of cards known only as Royal Flush, whose whereabouts were unknown. She became fascinated with the topic and asked every teacher and student she could find but to no avail.
Complaining loudly she quickly made her way to the library. She was mad damn it! She had to find something in there, anything! Perhaps I should look in the restricted section again... Alezea was a bit hesitant about going there again given what happened last time; her shoe was still missing! "Baah! I bested him once, I will do it again!"
All of a sudden she tripped on her own two feet and slammed shoulder first into the library doors. The doors came crashing open and numerous books came tumbling down from a nearby bookcase on top of her. "Damn it! Great... Just great!" she yelled slowly picking herself up off the floor.

A loud crashing sound startled Yun out of his thoughts, causing his eyes to widen and the pen to drop from his hand. Swiveling quickly in his chair, he stared at what had become of the bookcase nearest him; a heap of books lay scattered about the floor, and a... girl?
He abruptly stood and began pulling books from the pile. "Are you alright?!" He bit back the urge to say alive; being negative wasn't going to help matters anyway. Besides, it'd be horrible if someone died right next to him in the library. Horrible!
Students were watching in confusion, some looked ready to kill whatever it was that had caused such a thunderous racket. Yun felt his face grow hot, not enjoying being the current center of attention one bit. Grabbing the arm of the girl - who was hopefully still among the living - he yanked her from the pile and gave her a very stern once-over.
"Good god, unlucky woman!" he growled in a harsh whisper, his brow bent in annoyance and exasperation. "You need to be more careful! This is a library, not a wrecking yard!"
He snorted out a frustrated breath, his feathers having been sufficiently ruffled. It wasn't exactly the boy's forte to deal with such strange occurrences, but the other students were already going back to their studies and reading, and that left him. He couldn't just leave her without at least making sure she was alright. It was annoying, but he would have to make sure she didn't suffer brain damage from her stunt.
Leaning forward, he narrowed his eyes and tapped her forehead roughly with his forefinger. "Now, can you tell me your name? Go on! I have things to do today!" A lie, but he was already extremely stressed from the situation and needed an out.

A strand of curses escaped Alezea's mouth, loud enough for the student in the farthest corner of the library to hear her. She really didnt't care what they thought though. What she really cared about is that she might have once again lost her shoe in the process of making a fool of herself. Still looking for her shoe she did not even hear someone asking her if she was alright. Suddenly she felt herself being yanked by the arm back to an upright position. "Heeey! What are you doing?! I'm looking for my shoe here...." When she turned around she saw brilliant red eyes and and a mop of black hair contouring a handsome face, her face opened up into a big grin. "Whoa! Hello there hot stuff" She winked at him as she shamelessly looked him up and down. Apparently the handsome face complimented the handsome body. She was more into the buff and tough kind of boys, but for some reason this boy suited her well. Yum! Yum! I could work with that body. As her naughty thoughts began to subside Alezea realized that he actually talked to her, something about being more careful! Blushing a little she replied "Errr.. it's not like I did it on purpose I just tripped and fell into the door, and then everything went crashing down!" Alezea made wild gestures not even realizing that people were giving her nasty looks. She only stopped talking when she felt a tap on her forehead a clear sign for her to stop talking . She almost laughed at what she heard next, instead she settled for a snort "Hah! what else have you got to do today? More books to read?" She lifted an eyebrow and sat herself across from the table the boy was occupying, crossing her legs, completely forgetting about her missing shoe. She had no intention of letting off the hook just yet. "My name is Alezea Bonaventure. My friends call me Jinx. What's yours?"

Utter bewilderment crossed Yun's face at the woman's reaction; she seemed fine, to say the least, if she could spew out so many flirtatious comments so quickly after getting toppled by a bookcase. Her vocabulary was very colorful. At her very obvious eying of his person, he felt his face grow even redder.
"Err... please stop looking at me like that," he stammered, gaze dropping to the floor and away. Good god, how awkward. She wasn't shy at all. As she sat at his table, he groaned internally; great, now she was here to stay. He should have minded his own business. Yun slowly took back his seat, edging himself onto the chair with a sullen flair.
"Nice to meet you," he retorted, somehow sounding annoyed even as he responded politely. "My name is Yun. And you seem fine, so you don't have to sit at my table while I try to think." A heavy huff escaped his chest as Yun resumed looking out the window. Slowly, his gaze traveled down to her foot.
He raised both brows, expression bored. "Um... you are missing a shoe." He pointed.

She thought it was cute how uncomfortable he looked. The blush on his cheeks was just adorable! Oh man! I could kiss the blush out of those cheeks and... Her thoughts were halted by his request. Now it was her turn to blush, hiding her embarrassment behind a smile she asked innocently " Stop looking at you like what?"There was something about him that fascinated her. She didn't remember seeing him around. Probably because he was always at the library; not a place she runs to too often. Despite the fact that he wanted her gone she was not going to let him off the hook so easily. She was too curious! She could tell he was annoyed by her so she thought it best to be nice to him. He did help her out after all, grinning she answered him. "Nice to meet you, Yun. Erm... Thank you... for uh.. helping me out back there." an awkward silence spread across the table. Alezea didn't think Yun was used to company. He was so flustered... she knew it could not have been just because she caused a commotion. Her gaze followed his when he turned to look at her. Her insides started to melt when his gaze went down her legs and then she realized what he was looking at... "Oh crap, my shoe!" She stood quickly to retrieve her shoe that was thrown across the way. How it got there, she had no idea. Putting her shoe on she turned back to him, grinned and came to sit back down across from him. Another awkward silence.. Boy! Tough crowd! she thought. Alezea scrambled to find something to say, " Soo! What were you trying to think about before I came along?"

Good god, she was dramatic. Even the simplest movements and actions seemed to be done with some dramatic flair; worst of all, she kept coming back. He hadn't had trouble getting people to go away, before. This was a predicament. She was probably incredibly bored and felt that pestering innocent bystanders was the way to pass the time.
He lifted his brows at her question. "What was I thinking about? Oh... nothing, really." He sounded bored; not at her, but at himself. He had literally been thinking about nothing, aside from how boring he was being that day. It was kind of ironic, but he couldn't tell her that or she'd think she was some kind of hero and get weird ideas about them hanging out or something.
Admittedly... no, he wouldn't say he was at all pleased about interaction. The silence - the golden silence - was broken, and it looked as if it were impossible to retrieve again.
Hesitantly, he looked up at her face, scanning it. "So... you came here for a reason, right? Better... better get to it."

"Not thinking about anything?" Well that's weird.. People are always thinking about something" She made a face. Alezea was not one to keep her thoughts to herself so she immediately assumed other people wouldn't do it either. Maybe she was the weird one. Just because you bare your soul to the world doesn't mean other people do Alezea, how rude! Remembering her manners she quickly added "But.... but that's ok, you can keep them to yourself!" She grinned, not realizing her "save" could have actually been more rude than the initial comment. Another awkward silence. Alezea hated silence and Yun was sure not much of a talker. She wondered why was it he enjoyed the company of books better than to the company of actual people. He was so uncomfortable it made her uncomfortable as well. She looked down at her hands where she noticed she was holding her dice. She couldn't remember the time before her dice weren't there with her in uncomfortable situations, they always reminded her of... She shook her head. That doesn't matter now Alezea. What you need to do now is get stronger. Only after can you deal with that man who...Her thoughts were interrupted by movement at the edge of her vision. She turned to Yun and he was looking at her. Good god, his eyes were something else... She almost missed what he had said next. Better get to it? Was he dismissing her? Hah! She snorted loudly, not very lady like. That would be the day when she will be dismissed by someone. She leaves when she wants to leave and that's that. Besides, he was right, she had things to do here. Looking around at row upon rows of books Alezea slumped down in her chair, her head between her hands. How is she going to find any information on this Royal Flush? It would be one thing if she liked books. She feared that waking up at all hours of the night alone at the library could become a nightly thing. Plus, there are moreimportant things to do than sit there looking at books. Like, winning money for one. If only someone could help her. She looked up from between her hands to look at Yun. And then something clicked! "Hey! You like books don't you? Have you ever read anything about Royal Flush?" She sat back on her chair with a big smile on her face. This might be my most brilliant idea yet!

"Royal Flush?" he asked, tilting his head. "Er, do you mean like the card game? Because I don't play many games." Boy, this girl was really grasping for straws, now. It was starting to make him feel a little bad; maybe she was just incredibly lonely. Maybe she didn't have any friends, either. Still, friendless or not, it was no excuse to harass someone who obviously wasn't in the mood.
Wait.
"Royal Flush... Royal Flush?" Standing up quickly, Yun turned and began scanning over the bookcase behind him. A few steps to the side later and he pulled a book from the shelf, thumbing through it. This girl had a pair of die in her hand, could she be some kind of luck-based magic user? If so, then it made sense...
Yun brought the book down, open, onto the table with a thump. He pointed to a corner of the page and looked up at her. "Did you mean the Royal Flush? The fabled set of cards said to raise one's luck and grant them enhanced magical prowess?" He made a 'pbbtbbt' sound and flopped back into his chair. "This is only a myth... Do you really think these cards exist?"
She looked pretty serious. He slowly raised a brow. "Er... you're not planning on going and looking for these... are you?" Yun should have been an expert at smelling trouble, by now. He always managed to walk right into it, like some naive moron.
Today was no exception.

"No, not that kind of royal flush.." Alezea sighed loudly, running a hand through her hair. If Yun, who she assumed spent entire days at the library never even heard of it, she had no hope of ever finding it in here. Her hopes lifted when he stood up to find something "Oh! so you've heard of it?" When he brought back the book that could possibly contain the answers to all her problems she quickly took and skimmed through where he pointed. "Well.. uh well, I don't know if it exists.." She put the book down and looked at Yun, her spirits raising her from her chair, pacing back and forth she asked, "Does the myth say where it can be found?"She grinned wildly when he asked if she was planning on going to look for it, "Of course I am!! Why would I be searching for information for it if I wasn't going to? I am going and you're coming with me!" She grabbed him by the hand and started walking out of the library, dragging him behind her.

Before he knew it, he was being dragged out of his chair by a woman who did not know him and did not, honestly, seem to care. This troubled him greatly, and he tugged back a bit until he managed to break free from her grasp. Looking very frazzled, he squeaked, "Hold on! Hold on, woman! You don't... look at this!"
Yun quickly brought the book down on the table, flipping through it again. "Hm, hm, hmm...! See! This," he scowled at her and held the book up, still pointing to the passage. "The Royal Flush, a mystical deck of cards said to greatly enhance one's luck... said to be contained within the Styxia Ruins!"
The Styxia Ruins, a place he had never been, nor had he ever thought he would be going there anytime soon. Well, this was the deal breaker, for sure. She would hear 'Styxia' and probably drop it right there. The place was said to be contained underneath the Asphodel Meadows, and that, honestly... was bad enough. They would probably die if they went there.
"And getting to the ruins would require a lot of time, and the monsters, and... while it would provide fascinating insight into the Nine Heroes, and their magics and lores, it... it's too dangerous," he spat, finishing his thought aloud. He huffed out several breaths, shoulders rising and falling. He was being dramatic, but damn it, he didn't want to die just yet, and he could somehow see this unlucky woman trying to go there alone, and... that would be a horrific mess.
Oh, god. "AND," he began, waving the book at her. "You are incredibly unlucky! We already know this from what I saw in the last five minutes! We'll die for sure!"
Exhausted from the outburst, but calmed after having gotten it out of his system, Yun held both his hands up and sighed out a long breath, eyes closed. He'd hoped he had at least gotten through to her. Maybe helped her to see the light. The Royal Flush sounded like an amazing artifact, and he would love to study it or use it for a school project, but... it wasn't worth it.
Please, he pleaded silently, looking up at her. Please see sense. Use your common sense.

Common sense? What is that? If common sense existed, it definitely did not reside within Alezea. "Aww come on! Styxia Ruins can't be that bad....." Alezea crinkled her nose, "And I don't appreciate being called unlucky! Before....it... it was just a fluke." Blushing, Alezea looked down at her feet. Well it wasn't just a fluke, she has been very unlucky recently. But she couldn't tell him that yet, not yet. She needed him. She needed him to come with her. Fact of the matter was that she was scared, and despite the fact that she knew nothing about him, he gave her the time of day and even helped her when other people would just laugh at her and her...magical abilities. He seemed strong too, not that she knew what his magic abilities were or anything. She realized she didn't know much of anything right now. But this is just a risk she would have to take. "Besides.." She looked up grinning as she approached him "you seem to have enough luck for the both of us." She put her hand on his shoulder "I mean... you just met me" laughing she turned around and made her way to the library entrance. Once she reached it she twirled back towards the red eyes man and leaned against the door. "Please come with me, Yun. You... You're not gonna let me go alone are you?"

Yun made the ugliest face at her request - her trap. That was always how they got him. By proving herself so inadequate at basic functions, she had already forced his hand. He couldn't let her go alone, she would die. He couldn't trust her not to go, either, unless he supervised her. And that was far too much hassle, to supervise someone for the rest of his life. He knew what he had to do, lest he let the guilt eat at him for the rest of his life.
You're pretty weak for a Majin, he thought miserably, hanging his head. If he could just reach into his own head and re-wire himself, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Make himself less of a pushover when it came to damsels in distress, be they female, male, or creature. Curse his kind heart, curse it to hell!
"FINE!" he blurted angrily, snatching up his bookbag and storming past her and out the door. As he walked quickly down the hall, he called over his shoulder, "Are you coming? We need to prepare if we're going to go get ourselves killed!"
Yun huffed out a huge, angry breath. This was the worst day of his life. He felt that her lack of luck was already rubbing off on him. They were going to die, and he would never graduate, and he would have wasted his teenage years slaving away at odd jobs, and... and...
Stopping in the middle of the hallway, Yun took a few moments to breath. He pinched the area between his eyes and sighed. Calm down, he told himself. This would pass. They would get to the entrance of the Asphodel Meadows and turn tail once she realized how dangerous it was.
Defeated, he turned and waited for her to catch up. This was going to be a waste of a day, not that he'd had anything planned, anyway.
What was his life? Ugh.

"Yes!" Alezea did a little dance as Yun sped past her. She could tell he was angry. "Aww come on, lighten up will ya? We're not gonna get ourselves killed..." She struggle to catch up to him. "It's just a little trip.There... and back." She smiled, when she caught up to him. "Anyway, thanks for doing this. You were probably busy...I owe you a big one." You gotta give thanks where thanks is due, she heard her mother say in her ears. Her mother taught her to treat others as she wanted to be treated. She missed her mother terribly. Fighting back tears. Alezea turned around quickly, she started walking away to... where am I going again? Spinning around, she asked "Umm... how exactly are we preparing for this? Can't we just go? I got all I need right here." Alezea remarked, patting her pockets where her die lay safe.

"Are you kidding?" he asked, dumbfounded. He looked genuinely baffled by her questioning. Struggling for words, he gestured wildly with his hands for a few seconds before realizing the futility of wasting energy and stopped. "Listen, we... we need to pack a lunch, and... a first aid kit, and books to help us with the lore of the place, and..."
Yun half-turned, looking at Alezea over his shoulder with a wince. "And I can't go anywhere without my supplies. I need a knife, and you certainly need more than... whatever is small enough to fit into your pocket in order to protect yourself. I guess..."
He sighed, hand finding his temple and rubbing it. "I guess, just leave the books and lunch to me. I'll make something good." He looked serious as he began piecing what they would eat together in his head. Food was of the utmost importance - he didn't want to die hungry, after all. "You just focus on grabbing a first aid kit and maybe a coat. It might be cold."
It was almost absurd how practical he was being, given the circumstances. Lunch? A coat? Was he this girl's mother, now? He sighed for the hundredth time. He wouldn't have any air left in his lungs at this point.
"I'm going to head to my dorm to pack up. Meet me back here, in front of the library. And while you're at it, write yourself a will." He gave her a ghoulish stare, red eyes wide and brows high, before turning completely and striding toward the direction of the boys' dormitory.
This was not going to end well. He just knew it.
