He didn't know what had happened, why there had been screaming, what exactly had occurred in the course of the last twenty minutes. But the basic fact of the matter was that he should have known that something that had started out seeming so innocent could never quite be as tame when working for Deus Ex Machina.

There were whispers of a death as Gale led Stormy down the hall, but he was trying to distance himself from that, at least for now, if only to make sure that he could be professional about the entire matter. He felt bad about leaving Dorian and Harland, but they were with each other and perfectly capable of taking care of themselves.

And so was Stormy, he knew, but that was not the point.

He could feel his fingers trembling and tried to stop them, tried to push past the awkwardness and the tension and just talk as they had before, back before he had over complicated everything and made everything difficult for her.

He gripped the little bag in his hand a little more tightly.

"You okay?"

She almost had thought he would be escorting her to the dead body. Death meant getting intelligence, forming conclusions, following leads...not looking after someone. There was no awkwardness felt from her about vein pulled along, only a sense of resignation that no vacation was safe. Probably not even off duty either.

Stormy clung to his fingers with a surprisingly steady grip, feeling his tremble with a small frown. Maybe he was just as upset he couldn't relax...And then she realized that they were at last alone. She swallowed and kept her composure, letting out a deep breath. "Yeah...Some cruise, huh?"" Stormy commented with a weak smile. Her ice cream was melting into the cone.

"So um...how have you been?" Wow that was lame. Wow like she hadn't been talking and texting. Wow.

He turned to look at her, his face slightly paler than usual. At one end of the hallway he could see people running back and forth, their calls to one another distant and hard to hear. On the other side of the hallway, there was the bustling noise of the rest of the ship, a few bursts of innocent laughter, meandering voices.

Right now, though, for the first time in a while, they were by themselves.

Gale suddenly felt very nervous. And his ice cream was melting.

"It's...well, I can't say I've had better, since I've never been on a cruise before," he said, with a slight smile. "But I'm relatively certain that most cruises don't end up with a dead body. At least I hope not."

His expression softened a little at her question.

"...tired. You?"

He still hadn't let go of her hand yet.

She half chuckled. "Hopefully not...Unless it's modern day Sherlock." The noise felt distant as she ate more of her ice cream cone, pulling her phone out not to answer but to see what Nevada wanted. The preview mentioned her going towards the dead body...Stormy made a musing noise.

"Not sleeping well, or just tired of people?" she asked instead rather than answer his question, adding gently, "If you want to be alone, I can leave. I know that feeling of needing to be alone very well..." Especially with the new drama. His hand got a small squeeze in return and she didn't know why.

"Yes, well, unfortunately we don't have our own Holmes and Watson to follow," said Gale, a bit dryly. He lifted his own cone and took a few absent bites, his gaze flickering from one end of the hallway to the other before they moved back to Stormy.

"...not sleeping well," he said quietly. A few drops of melted ice cream fell onto his hand, sliding down his wrist, but he hardly noticed. "And tired of people too, I suppose."

He wanted to say something more, something not stupid, but the words wouldn't come. He wanted to tell her that no matter what she decided, he would be all right, that he wanted to preserve their little friendship even if she chose not to give him a chance, but his throat felt dry and his thoughts were jumbled together in confusion.

"But not tired of you," Gale said, and gave her a small smile. "I'm never tired of you, so don't worry about leaving. I just wanted to make sure that you were taken care of, is all."

"Oh, I dunno! You're British and smart, I could be Watson for you," she chirped. "I'll even do the limp like the newest BBC version, and you can stay your dry humored self and...yeah." She didn't know why she was trying to joke; maybe to alleviate the subtly rising tension before it reached a fever pitch like it had in the infirmary. If she stayed cool and light, everything would be just fine. Stormy didn't want to throw more on either of them now that it was evident there was something going on upon this ship.

She wanted to fiddle with her fingers or bite her nails, but neither was possible with he ice cream cone. Her brows knitted as she slid her hand out of Gale's and fished a napkin out of her little purse. "There we go: don't want that going on your handsome suit," she said as she wiped the drops of ice cream off his hand and then pressed it to the cone. "But I'm sorry to hear...Can I ask why?" Maybe he'd gone on another mission after Jake's and gotten stressed...Or maybe, she hated to think, it had something to do with their last encounter.

Her hand curled back close to her chest at Gale's last comment, at once touched and wary. She believed him, truly, and past experience lent to his assertion. But the past had a way of messing with her--no doubt Thane touching on certain memories to make her purposefully uncertain--and so her smile was with mixed emotion as she dipped her head coquettishly. "That's very kind of you...I'm glad someone on the island tolerates me." Stormy gestured with her head down the hall. "D'you still want to sit down somewhere? We should get some fresh air."

He smiled. "Maybe that's what I'll call you instead of Lightning," said Gale, lightly teasing. "Watson. You can be my partner in crime, and I'll be socially awkward and confusing...oh wait."

He felt some of the warmth leave his fingers as Stormy pulled her hand away, leaving him slightly disappointed, but she was pulling out a napkin and dabbing at the spilled ice cream, which was dripping slowly over his hand and onto the floor.

He gave a little shrug. "Mostly Jake," Gale admitted. "But other things as well. Lately I just feel as though nothing is going quite right, y'know?"

Warily, he glanced over at her, certain he'd made her uncomfortable, since she was looking down at the ground now. Internally he felt heavy handed and ridiculous, and he wondered if it was always going to be this way, like it had been around Eva as well. Except once he had figured out his feelings for her, it had been easy to be around her, simple.

Maybe that was the problem. Maybe he just needed to figure out what it was that he wanted.

"Ah," said Gale. "Yes, let's sit, I'm sure you're tired. Do...do you want to come back to my room, perhaps?"

Then he realized how the invitation sounded, and hastily added, "Just to freshen up a bit, sit down, that's all. I haven't even seen it for myself, so I'm curious if I'll be spending time in a closet while on here. Plus I..." He hesitated. "I have something I want to give to you, if you don't mind."

"You should eat some more of that before it drips all the way down~ Or I'll eat it for you!" Holmes and Watson! Will and Elizabeth! Even if she didn't feel half as cool as the pirate queen, Stormy laughed at his joke, because they really were sort of partners in crime: whether it was making an escape out of the infirmary, testing new equipment, or keeping track of each other on the battle field, they'd managed to pair off pretty well.

So maybe, if she took a deep breath...

Storm made a soft musing noise and nodded, as she didn't know how to approach such a cause. "I...should probably talk to you about that mission," she said a little softly. "Some things happened after you were forced away, and I haven't been sleeping well either." Not that insomnia and nightmares and a brain that refused to sleep was new for her, but it was an unpleasant experience doubled by the fact that Thane's assertions about the fallacy of friendship had been, in that moment, almost horribly true.

Gale's offer was odd to handle. On the one hand, Stormy wanted to investigate what a full hunter's room looked like and see if it could really accommodate three people...On the other, Gale wanted to talk to her in his room. And give her something. Alone. It wasn't supposed to be anything, of course she didn't think he'd try, but...God, she touched her cheek lightly and felt how pink it was getting; Gale's blushing affliction seemed contagious today. Ophelia bought her ice cream, Nevada wanted to stay roomies, Gale was looking out for her.

It made her, strangely, want to cry. Not so strangely, it also made her clingy.

But she smiled instead, brighter than before, because she knew that mask so well and hated so much to make people fuss.

"I was wondering what the rooms looked like..." She hesitated, then offered her hand again. "And you know, curiosity's my biggest purpose. Let us go then, you and I~"

Obligingly he lifted his ice cream and ate a mouthful, which was sticky and rapidly growing warmer, but it still tasted good. Licking his lips, he smiled at her, feeling a little bit of the tension ease.

Maybe he could do this after all.

Stormy's face was pink enough to rival Gale's own, but the offer for her to come see his room had been truthfully honest. He meant nothing untoward, obviously, and they both needed a place to sit down and rest, especially with all of the chaos reigning on board. And when she hesitated, he almost rescinded it, debating on taking her to her own room.

But then she smiled and it made his stomach twist because that smile was just so bright and then she was holding her hand out to him and Gale reached out and took it, sliding his fingers easily through hers.

"Through half deserted streets, right?" he said softly, and smiled, tugging her down the hallway.

"Looks like I'm in...Room 906," Gale murmured, half to himself as they took the elevator up to Deck 9. He led the way down the hall and paused at one of the doors, a brass nameplate with Room 906 scrawled in elegant font nailed to the door. "Here it is."

He let go of Stormy's hand to grab the keycard from inside of his suit jacket pocket, sliding it through the lock. It opened with a click, and Gale pushed on the door, letting it swing open.

He stared.

"This is...uh...big."

She hummed a little to herself as they walked, even going so far as to swing their hands a little. It was a childish motion she couldn't let go of, a small comfort on a large boat that held a secret that might--would spell trouble for them all. The jazz music was out of range now, but she still kept her steps light, the rhythm and the melody having not quite left her mind; it clung like water droplets on a cup. She wished in a petty way that the screaming had not come from the lobby . . . Maybe she could have danced a little more. Maybe she could have asked--

"Whoa." Stormy peered into the room with wide eyes, a look of wonder crossing her face. She was almost afraid to step in and disturb the peace of such a comfortable looking layout. "They're not kidding about first class . . ." Delicately, like the room was just an illusion, she stepped in, clutching at her purse and ready to investigate. And also take her shoes off for a bit and wiggle her toes.

"If there's a reason for me to go full hunter now, I think for perks like these I'll try even harder," she commented happily, lapping up her ice cream before it could drip to the floor. "I don't even want to know what my room would be like . . ."

The room really was very nice, very spacious and open. An enormous bed sat in the middle, cream silk sheets and comforter looking very inviting, with a cream colored couch set off to the side. A door to the left revealed a large washroom, complete with full shower and tub set, and a sliding glass door across the way showed a set of chairs on a small deck.

"Well," said Gale. He took a few tentative steps forward, glancing around. "It's...well, it's got a lot of room, that's for sure."

He turned around to look at her. "Make yourself comfortable, all right?" he told her. "And feel free to look around, sit anywhere you like."

He fiddled with the bag on his hand, forgetting about his ice cream (again) that was now less ice cream and more like an ice river, dripping down his wrist onto the plush cream carpet that was at least four inches thick.

"...damn."

Setting the bag down on the table, he hastily made for the washroom, trying to find a washcloth.

"Er. One sec..."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 16, 2013 9:19 pm

"I told you to eat," she chastised him teasingly, reducing her ice cream to a mold of the cone before nibbling on the waffle itself. "And you were talking about a Vermonster earlier!" She caught sight of the bag, but not quite what store; and perhaps it was better to delay that knowledge until he decided to present it to her, though it was hard not to try and peek as her curiosity often demanded.

As Gale set about cleaning the spill, Stormy ghosted further in, examining the curtains and furniture with a smile. Everything was a soft sort of color, which was nice . . . relaxing even. This was as good place to talk as any. She was set to settle down on the sofa bed when her eyes strayed to the balcony. Stormy paused, pondered, then slipped off her shoes and tucked them out of the way. She might not get a chance to do so again . . .

And thus she made her way to the balcony outside, sliding the door open with barely a sound. There were chairs, but Stormy was more interested in the vista Gale had. The crash of the boat against the waves, the wind teasing her hair, the undulation of colors in the sea . . . She was almost mesmerized and felt a calm come over her from the repetitive and slight motion of the boat. Taking the chance, Stormy pulled her phone out and quickly typed out a response to Nevada before she worried.

I'm with him, don't worry. We're safe in his room. It's large and pretty accommodating, but there's just two beds. If you really want to still, I can try and ask him.

Nyxtsuki Moon
Text to Nevada
How'd the thing go? Did you learn anything?

And then the phone was tucked away once more into her purse. Stormy began to finish off the remains of her ice cream as she enjoyed the view, leaning against the balcony to take some weight off her bare feet and musing.

Fortunately for Gale, none of the ice cream had gotten on his suit, for which he was very grateful, considering it was one of the only actual nice things that he owned. He managed to mop up most of the ice cream, took a few last bites of it, and through the last melted bit away, washing his hands in the sink in the washroom.

As he stepped out into the now empty room, toweling dry his hands, he glanced around, slightly confused as to where Stormy was -

- but then he saw her, out on the balcony, and for a moment he didn't move, just watched her from where he stood. The sun was warm and bright on her skin and hair and the wind sent it curling around her shoulder, a few stray tendrils drifting about her face.

His stomach twisted once, then calmed.

...ah, thought Gale, and he felt the tension leave his shoulders. He kicked off his shoes, pushing them out of sight beneath a table and shrugged off his suit jacket, setting it gently across the back of a chair. He slid the bag off of the top of the table and padded out to the deck to stand beside her.

"Enjoying the view?"
PostPosted: Sun Jun 16, 2013 9:41 pm

"Mmm." Her gaze was still cast out to the waves as if waiting for something to leap out: a whale, a dolphin, the fin of a shark, a clump of sea weed, or perhaps something more impossible like an island nation on the back of a turtle, a spaceship come free from the innards of the earth, a leviathan breaking the surface with a mighty roar. All of it she saw in her inner eye, and it all looked wonderful in its own way; there was a dreamy sort of smile on her face. The sunlight made her want to curl up and sleep like a cat, to perhaps try and lucid dream that image to life . . . But the pressure lifted with Gale's presence.

"It's nice out here. It's not quite like a beach because there's no sand and you can't touch the water, but being near it is . . . calming. It's motion that has the illusion of going nowhere: waves and waves forming and crashing, almost looks the same each time, almost like they're trying to get up and move on. But there's an undercurrent that catches you by surprise and pulls you in. It's not still; it's always moving towards something."

Gale might recognize the look in her eyes as the one that had been present when she had gone into the house rant in the town. She'd been deep in thought, and though she'd only been describing the ocean, she had to wonder if there was some sort of connection to their present situation.

"What's on your mind?" Stormy asked, giving him a sidelong glance as she nibbled her cone. She wanted Gale to lead, that she might learn more about his thought process by following where he wanted to go first. There was no awkwardness coming from her now, only a subtle sense of serenity.

When he had told her that he liked listening to her talk, it had been the truth. Stormy's imagination was wild and carefree and so very spirited, everything down to the last detail, and just hearing her thoughts, whether she thought them rambling or not, brought a smile to his face.

"It's beautiful," he said gently, and looked out at the ocean, letting his gaze flicker across the endless waves, the never stopping current of vibrant blue seawater that smelled of salt and fresh air.

Gale pushed himself off the railing and turned so that he was facing her. "I got you something," he said, and shifted a little, bringing the bag around in front of him. "But before I give it to you, I want you to understand that this isn't...it's not a commitment, all right? It's not me trying to force anything from you, pressure you, or anything. It's just...me saying thank you."

He smiled a little, then reached into the bag and pulled out a small, ice blue box. Upon opening it, Stormy would find a simple silver chain-link bracelet with three charms on it - a crown, a bear, and a dog.

"The crown is because you love Disney so much," said Gale, by way of explanation. "And because lots of Disney movies are about princesses. The bear is because I kind of feel like it somewhat represents you. Some bears are just cute and sweet, but some can be stronger, able to defend what they care about. The dog..."

He trailed off a little, then started again.

"Because of our snow dog," he said finally. "The one we made together, back when we first met."

For once, Gale wasn't blushing. He tucked the empty bag back into the pocket of his slacks and smiled a little, titling his head.

"This is my thanks," he said. "For just being you. And I don't expect anything from it, I just wanted to show you that I appreciate you and what you are. And let you know that no matter what happens with...with us...I will always be your friend."

His smile grew, just a little.

"Thank you for expanding my little world into something larger."
