Rivener held up his cell and made sure he had the right house. He kept glancing between the screen and the view, like he couldn't make sense of the two. The note had said "remote island" so Riv had imagined something overgrown and gloomy, scary. Like some old abandoned place. But the scene in front of him was shockingly utopian, with a quaint little white cottage surrounded by palm trees, nestled on a sandy beachfront and looking like the epitome of awesome places to live. The Sigel turned to glance over his shoulder: Yeah, that was the sea right there. Doucette lived on the beach. Damn. Why hadn't he thought of this when he was looking at places to rent with Zul?!
Again he checked the number. There were very few other homes on the island but he wanted to make sure this was indeed the right one. Yes, it was. Yes. Yes, he checked again and it was still the same number on the house as on his phone. Raising his eyebrows, Rivener clapped his cell closed and put it in his pocket, floating towards the door slowly and taking in the sight. It really was unfairly gorgeous here. The palm trees were rustling in the breeze and gosh, maybe Riv could ask if HE could live here. Grinning, hoping Doe would need a babysitter often, the dark Sigel made his way to the door and straightened himself out, running fingers through his hair and smoothing out his usual red-and-black vest.
One sharp, black nail pressed the doorbell. Riv waited outside with one fist on his hip, looking over his shoulder at the sea again. Yeah, this really was quite nice!

Although their sea-side cottage was anything but convenient, the general beauty of the place and the tranquillity that settled in one’s heart once on the island more than made up for the short ferry ride over. At least it came regularly in good weather and in bad, well, sometimes a little holiday from life wasn’t a bad thing when you could just blame it on someone else!
The two had not been expecting visitors and Liam was more than comfortable entering the home on his own (really, as if he owned the place himself), so when the doorbell let out its soft chime and caused the women to look up from their respected activities it was with an expression of confusion.
Usually the neighbours rang on the phone if they needed something, as the peace of the island was loathe to be broken by anyone who experienced it. One did not simply show up asking for a cup of sugar, they phoned ahead and made plans to do so!
Doucette shot Ren an apologetic look, for she was currently entangled in some of her crafting supplies, knitting another something or other for one of the pugs that lounged happily in the sunshine. So unused to visitors were the dogs that the doorbell elicited no reaction from either of them, save a bit of an ear wiggle and nose twitch.
The aurora did not much mind answering the door for her guardian as her activity involved dozing in her favourite, oversized chair in the living room with one of her most beloved films playing in the background: The Maltese Falcon.
Blinking owlishly into the bright light, the night-preferring frei looked at Rivener with only mild interest. His colours were both nice and not nice, and so she decided to withhold judgement. She still wasn’t used to all of Doucette’s red, after all. After a moment though, she realized that the figure before her wasn’t simply a man and those neon blues widened with recognition despite the light, a smile forming on small, coral lips.
‘Can I help you’ seemed very out of place in this moment strangely, and so Revon said nothing instead, prompting Doucette to sigh and put down her things. “Who is it Ren?”

Rivener didn't hear anything from inside save a faint background noise he figured was the television. Maybe they hadn't heard him? He'd been pretty sure he'd detected a chime sound, but maybe they were out. Or sleeping. Or deaf. He looked over a shoulder again, admiring the view, and suddenly the door was opening.
When Riv turned back he was met with a daintly little felame with flowers and stones in her hair, and fluttery wings on her back. There was no mistaking that she was a Raevan, and Rivener grinned toothily at her, showing his fangs. He raised his eyebrows. She looked so pretty! And when she widened her eyes and smiled, which Riv assumed was because she was happy to meet another of their kind, the Scorpion chuckled and rustled his wings, not saying anything either. They both had a good long moment to assess one another.
She had a beautiful gradient thing going on with her hair. Riv liked that a lot! It was all the rage in humans at the moment, but none of them could get the gradient this lovely. She had a pretty red decoration on a thin chain necklace, seeming out of place in all the blues and turquoise and white, but Riv thought it made a nice little accent. The shoulder details of her nearly-roman outfit were nice! And those wings looked like pieces of stained glass, how pretty! But it was her bright, bright blue eyes that were his favorite. He kicked himself internally for being a romantic sap: they reminded him a little bit of Zul's.
Doucette's voice chimed out from inside and Riv peered over the blue-shaded girl's shoulder, finding a silhouetted woman sitting at a table inside. "It's Rivener," he replied, then settled back down to where he'd been originally standing. He offered his hand lightly to the girl while tilting his head in greeting. "Rivener. Pleased to meet you."

A number of emotions flickered through the expressive gaze of the aurora, but her facial features rarely reflected the changes, maintaining a warm but polite smile.
This male was very different from the other one she’d met at the bakery. His colours had been brighter, but neither sported the frei’s favourite tones. Lifting her wings curiously, Ren drifted closed, more curious with the fine details of the other rather than the broader picture. The fangs that flashed with his smile, the sharpness around his wings and the general sense of danger than hung about him – they all intrigued the aurora far more than a simple snap shot would have provided. Fingers curled against her palms, longing to explore, but she remembered the last lecture Doucette had provided on that topic and thus resisted the urge.
It was hard though! He did not look soft like the others had been. Would this Rivener be different too?
Without realising it, the newborn had floated yet closer, invading any personal space that might have been polite though not yet touching the other. The way she drifted in a lazy tempo it was hard to determine a height, but she never rose taller or even eye-level with him, preferring to drift lazily from side to side in her inspection of all the odds and ends. Eventually she settled on his hair, similar to hers and yet, again, different.
At first his hand was not noticed, so distracted was Revontulet with her inspection of the other creature, but when she realized he’d invited her to touch him those fragile wings gave a flutter of excitement and she took his hand in both of hers. Her skin was cool, but not uncomfortably so. Like a stone left out in room temperature, it seemed to rest just a degree or so below what everyone else was feeling. “Revontulet” she replied, annunciating the ‘tu’ sound in the middle before letting the last letters drop off. Hardly before the entirety of her name had left her lips she had begun to let her fingers explore his wrist.
“Oh!!” Doucette gasped from her spot in the living room, shooting up out of her seat so fast the chair clattered to the ground. “Rivener! It is so nice to hear from you!” The redhead’s smiling face appeared next to Ren’s, but her voice was slightly strained. It was wonderful to see a familiar face, but she did not forget the mildly unfortunate meeting they’d had last. “Won’t you come in?”

Rivener grinned again as his hand was taken after a long consideration. This little Frei was looking him over like he was a fresh new discovery; she must be young indeed. Her curiosity was encouraging! It must mean she'd not been stifled or run into many bad experiences yet. So when she took his hand and then proceeded to explore his wrist, which bore the usual hard metal bracer, he let her. "Revontulet." He repeated it a few times in his mind so he'd remember. It was an odd name, that. But pretty.
Doucette's rather dramatic reaction culminated in her rushing to the door then, and Riv smirked at her in amusement, though his eyes were sharp and scrutinizing. He scoured every inch of apparent skin for ANY sign of a bruise. If he saw even just one, he'd take Revontulet away, escort her to the Lab, and tell Dr.Kyou that this was NOT a safe home for a young Raevan.
Luckily for everyone, Doucette seemed perfectly fine. Rivener relaxed a little and smiled more whole-heartedly, his eyes losing that hard edge. He floated inside slowly once the ladies gave him the room for it, leaving his hand in Revontulet's care so she could keep exploring his jewelry if she wanted. "Good to see you too, Doucette. I'd love to come in. I have to say I'm rather jealous of your house. It's really wonderful out here, and it looks really cozy here and-... Is that a pug?" He blinked as he saw the little dogs. What was with almost everyone having pugs? Vyn, Melisande, now Revontulet... Who else owned one of these little smush-faced creatures? Although these two did seem well behaved.
"Anyway!" He decided he would ignore the dogs as much as possible, so he turned back to the women with a broad smile, though he once again turned an edged look towards Doucette. "You'd said you would tell me when your Raevan was born, Doe."

Doucette flushed nervously at Rivener’s words. There was something about the scorpion that always seemed to make her feel like she’d done something wrong. Sadly, he was usually right. “Ah, yes, thank you,” the redhead murmured to the compliment on her home as she showed him into the living room. It was located directly within the door, so there wasn’t much ‘showing in’ that she needed to do with the small, open floor plan. But now she was unsure what the next move was. Should one offer a chair to a floating half-body? Or a beverage for that matter? “You see, she really was just born and I have been quite busy with my new job and I appear to have lost quite a number of my contacts when my phone was misplaced and I am so terribly sorry Rivener, of course I would have called you if...if...”
The woman’s voice trailed off, not sure how to continue the small ramble. Hands fluttered anxiously in a vague direction, something which could be mistaken for an offer of a seat or nothing more than the release of her nerves. Would she have called him? She had not even managed to call Vivi, so cut off from the rest of the world she felt recently. There had even been the consideration of selling her home and moving closer to the Lab, but the thought of giving up her little paradise left an ache in her heart and Doe would not have been able to afford a second residence on her salary.
Meanwhile the newborn cared very little for the conversation, as she seemed to care very little about most of Doucette’s conversations. Her guardian always seemed to speak very fast and animatedly, her hands flipping about in odd manners and her face changing colours every so often. It was all very unnecessary for the moonstone and she focused instead on the male, tapping one fingernail against the bracelet he wore on his arm.
It made a lovely sound and she smiled in response, her wings giving a quick pulse of interest. Bright eyes turned their gaze up towards his before down to the little bundles of fat on the floor. “No, not pugs,” the aurora replied with a little shake of her head, causing her hair to shimmer as it caught the light, “They are Dolce and Gabby.”
Well, it wasn’t her fault she didn’t know they were pugs. There are a lot of animal breeds out there for a newborn to learn!

Rivener raised an eyebrow at Doucette's flailing hands and ranting words. She was really quite flustered, wasn't she. A touch of a frown graced his features as he heard her mention being very busy with a new job: too busy to spend enough time with Revontulet? The Sigel's jaw tightened. He knew first-hand how lonely it was when your guardian was away working all the time, especially in the first few years of life. He'd have to make sure to mention that to the red-head.
Riv did realize her gesture wasn't an offer, really, but he decided to take a seat anyway, moving to a couch and sitting, his belts pooling under him and the ribbon coiling about his rune like a spring, giving him the look of being ready to pounce at any moment. His wings rustled to make themselves comfortable. He kept one arm out to drape along the back of the sofa so the young Frei could keep poking at his jewelry if she wanted- what an odd fascination she had, but far be it from him to stifle any young one's curiosity. Her reply to his question about the dogs drew a toothy grin from the Scorpion.
"Dolce and Gabby? Cute names. They look very nice." He chuckled happily, staring at her hair as he talked: it did a rather mesmerizing color-shifting thing in the light, almost. "But I think they are pugs, too. Pugs are a kind of dog. Dolce and Gabby are their names. Like you and I, we're Raevans. But our names are Rivener and Revontulet." Suddenly he REALLY liked her name, when he put it beside his own like that. Riv and Rev. How amusing! "Do you like having them around? They're friendly?"
"And Doucette," he turned his attention back to her. "What new job would that be, that you're talking about? I hope it's not keeping you TOO busy. Your new family member here will never quite bond with you right if you're not around enough." Was that a little bitterness in his voice? Ah, perhaps it was. He recovered himself with a polite smile and hoped she hadn't noticed- this was about the Aurora girl, not about himself.

When Rivener sat down Doucette mentally kicked herself. Of course. She had seen Ren sit many times, why would she think that just because the scorpion was older he would be any different?
“New job?” she echoed, as if she hadn’t just spoken exactly those words to him. Oh, right! “Yes! I just started working as a kindergarten teacher a few months ago, not even a year now. The hours are quite short and I often take Revontulet with me to class.” Doucette beamed happily at the aurora. Although the girl was often less than pleased to be asked to leave the cool, dimmer shelter of her home to venture into the sunlight, she had engaged admirably with the other children, easily moving ahead of their skill level.
Thankfully the redhead’s days were short and when she did have to leave Revontulet in the care of one of her neighbours she wasn’t too worried about her. The newborn mostly enjoyed napping throughout the day, at times keeping Doe up later into the evening hours than she would have preferred with her movies or questions. But the guardian never uttered a complaint. It was obvious that the woman was happy, practically preening with pride over her girl.
“She really seems to like it, though she doesn’t talk a lot.”
Revontulet listened to Rivener and Doucette talk. It was true, she disliked having to go outside all the time when it was so bright out, but she needed little convincing. Once she had become smarter than the other children in the class she had become happier. To say that she was haughty about their lower ranking would have been a bit extreme (for she never gloated), but it was certainly not too far off.
When the older frei explained to her just what a pug was and why the word mattered she puckered her lips slightly, imitating the p-motion he’d done but without making any sound. Pug seemed an ugly word and though she wanted to learn it, she was unwilling to let it slip from her mouth. Instead Revon let her lips form and unform the sound, distracted until she heard him mention her name. Like wind picking up sails or someone taking a deep breath her wings outstretched and fluttered elegantly, much the way a butterfly would flit about in someone’s tummy. The aurora was very pleased with the way he said her name.
“They are friendly,” she replied after a long moment, unaware that more time had passed than might be natural for a question being asked and replied to, but the newborn looked so sweet, so open and warm, you couldn’t really fault her for it. “I like Dolce and Gabby. I like Rivener.”

Rivener's eyebrows arched at Doucette's job. A kindergarden teacher! Well, that was DEFINITELY safe as work went, and short hours... and ah, she even took Revontulet with her? Very good. The Scorpion smiled, clearly pleased with this. His wings rustled. "That's very nice of you, to take her along." He could also see the pride in Doe's every movement when she looked at the Aurora Frei, and slowly the Sigel's mood dropped from guarded judgement to relaxed contentment. It seemed good, here. Just the fact that the guardian wasn't showing bruises was a great leap forward. The house was comfortable, the property amazing, the time they spent together was good... Yeah, Doucette passed. Rivener gave his approval, though he was never an official representative of the Lab or anything.
"Well, Doe, my offer still stands- I want to be involved if you'd let me. Babysitting, tutoring, anything you want for her, I can try to provide. I'll admit I've got a bit of an ulterior motive, too: I REALLY like your yard, hahah." Already he was eager to go lie out on the beach sand to warm himself. Maybe later, after he left, he could detour a little further on the beach and indulge before going home.
Suddenly Revontulet spoke, long after the question had been posed, such that Rivener had thought she wouldn't reply at all. He looked at her with a broad grin, still enjoying the way she'd reacted when he said her name earlier. And now she was declaring her own judgement complete, too: She liked Rivener! The Scorpion chuckled happily and tilted his head, red eyes glittering with amused joy. "That's very good news! I like Revontulet, too. I have a question: Do you prefer people to use your full name all the time? Or can I call you Rev for short? In exchange, you could also call me Riv. But it's up to you, if you prefer full name, then I will use your full name."

In much the way when she was flustered, Doucette spoke with her hands, the excitement coming through in her body language. “Oh Rivener, that would be so wonderful, thank you so much for offering. You are such a gentleman.” The redhead beamed at the scorpion, feeling a little more at ease now that some of his tension against her had eased. For now, she was only grateful that Liam was away on whatever business he’d disappeared on just before Ren had been born. Were he to be here now, even on his best behaviour, she felt sure that Rivener would not approve.
The thought made Doe want to shudder, but she resisted, looking to Revon instead, “Would you like that Revontulet? If Rivener came and visited you more when I work?”
A wide grin broke across the be-freckled face at his confession and Doucette let out a laugh, shaking her head and causing her curls to bounce against her cheeks. “You are welcome to come here any time. Revon does not enjoy the sunshine so much, but I think it would do her some good.” That, and it might get her to start sleeping more during the night! That would be a small blessing in itself though the guardian couldn’t fault the frei. It must be hard being a night creature and forced to live in a day-world. Surely Rivener understand those difficulties?
“Rev,” the newborn repeated to herself quietly a few times while the others talked, subconsciously keeping her fingertips against the other’s arm, feeling the warmth and softness from far away.
Ending with the ‘v’ sound was strange to her, but not distasteful. It sounded better when he said it, and truly she had never considered what it mattered what other people called her. Doucette often called her Revontulet, but sometimes called her Revon or Ren when her tongue got lazy. Revontulet was not an easy name despite her affinity towards it.
“It is only for Rivener,” the aurora decided out loud, looking up into his face with a warm smile on her coral lips. She preferred to call him Rivener, for now, but she did not dislike Riv. It was simply too difficult for her to pronounce without chance of failure and the perfectionist in her refused such attempts.

Rivener smiled over at Doucette's standing invitation to come over whenever he wanted. He'd have to do that. But when she mentioned the sun might do Revontulet good, the Scorpion looked over at the girl, admiring her pale complexion. "Oh, I don't know. Sun isn't alwasy good for us. I know a few, in fact, who were made of ice and disliked the warmth of the sun quite a lot. Maybe she's not a sun person, that's alright." He was not expressly aware of what elements made up the gossamer-haired Frei, so he couldn't make an informed decision about whether the sun WOULD be harmful, but when in doubt, he figured they should believe Revontulet's feelings on the matter and respect them. "Besides, she wouldn't look as delicate with a tan," he concluded with a chuckle. Pale skin did suit her.
The girl chose that moment to give her final word on the matter of Rivener's nickname for her. Apparently she wanted to keep using HIS full name, but he could understand that- there was something infinitely interesting about forming words when you were young, and Rivener was more fun to say than just Riv. Still, he was pleased that she would allow HIM to call her Rev. Only him, apparently. He grinned. "Rev, then. Agreed." He chuckled, noticing that she was still touching him. Was she testing things? If she really was as new as Doe said, then maybe she WAS just trying out the texture of his skin. Considerately, he slowly extended a wing so she could touch the sharper edges on that: he made sure to kepe any trace of poison out of his stingers, of course.
"So, would you like that, Rev? If I visited more? I can help you learn a lot of things, you know. I've been alive a long time. That's why I have a fuller body." He motioned to his elongated torso. "When you get old enough, you'll grow too! But that will be in a while."

Being a rather pale creature herself, Doucette could understand a mild aversion to the sun. It seemed to have this ability to bake her red within moments. Thankfully Ren’s paleness seemed to stem from elsewhere. It was not a pale which lacked the touch of sun, but the kind of moonlit skin that had more of an ethereal quality to it. Delicate was certainly a good term for it. “Very true...though thankfully she has shown no discomfort towards being in the sun, simply an affinity for being out at night instead.” Doe lifted her shoulders in a slight shrug. She was fairly flexible with the girl, never sure where to draw the line but knowing one day she would have to.
Thankfully, the aurora required very little in terms of parenting. Besides that one strange night when she’d come home covered in paint and toting a lava lamp, Revon was the picture of a good child.
Rapt delight spread on the frei’s features as the male invited her to touch his wings. Her guardian had given her numerous lectures on not touching when not invited – lectures she did not understand and frankly did not approve of. Why was touching not allowed? Ren didn’t care if people touched her, why should they care if she touched them?
Single-mindedly she traced her hands over the spines of his wings and inspected the thinner membrane between them. Although she handled the sharp points in a way that may have cut thinner skin, the moonstone remained unscathed and unperturbed. Everything about Rivener was different than her, unsurprising considering the other frei she had met. So far, Ren felt very different from all of the others. Uncomfortably different. Why didn’t she fit in?
Riv’s further mention of his difference had her eyes drawn to his lower abdomen, brow furrowing unhappily as she thought back to the others she’d met. At least the aurora had been the same size as them...but she had not realized at the time that they were all different from Rivener. “I can touch?” Ren asked, making no indication of whether she was inquiring to her ability to continue touching him were he to visit more, or if she could touch his stomach.
“Revontulet, just because you ask beforehand doesn’t make it ok.”
Ren turned her gaze towards Doucette, sharp neons meeting the more dull counterparts of her guardian’s. For a long moment the young frei was silent, expressionless, before she shifted back to Rivener, awaiting his reply as if Doucette had said nothing at all. Riv had let her touch him.

Rivener grinned at Doucette's mention of the girl liking the night more. "I can understand the feeling," he said with a chuckle. "I much prefer the night myself, but I was lucky enough to have part of my self be more comfortable with the sun. So I end up liking both in different ways. But since I feed at night, I prefer that. ...Does that mean Rev feeds at night, too? What does she eat?" Seems like something he should know if he was going to babysit her often. Wouldn't do to inadvertantly starve her while she was under his care!
He could feel her fingers exploring his wing, and a few times he almost told her to be careful, looking over when he felt the sharp stingers being pressed rather hard. Every time, though, her skin was unblemished, hardly even dimpling under the sharp wing tip. Hm! Whatever was she made of, that she had such beautifully delicate looking skin, yet it was such a tough material? Diamonds? The girl peered over his shoulder at the mention of his body though, and she asked if she could touch, which brought a soft chastising from Doucette. The Scorpion watched the two interact until Rev's eyes turned to him again, and he let out an amused laugh.
"It's alright, Doe. She asked, and it's polite enough. I have no problem with it. Yes, Rev, you can touch. Anything but the ribbons or rune, okay? That's very very not-okay to touch without permission, on ANY Raevan." And only Zul had THAT permission. But anything else, Riv had no trouble with. Actually, a thought occured to him then: "Does that mean I can touch you, too?" He WAS curious to see what her hair felt like, and what her wings might be made of! They looked delicate, like Xuelian's... But WERE they?

Doucette rubbed at her cheek with one finger, an awkward gesture. She wasn’t entirely sure what Ren ate to be honest. That she ate at night and that she tended to wade out into the ocean and stare up at the moon when she did so the guardian knew full well, but she had never directly asked the aurora and had never put too much thought into it. “Yes, she said hesitantly, watching the girl explore the other’s wings, “She definitely feeds at night. Or at least prefers to feed at night as I’ve never seen her feed in the daytime or known that she was doing so...”
And notice she would have, the way her little glowbug lit up whenever she was feeding. Although, now that Doe thought about it, Ren never seemed to light up when she fed in the water but there wasn’t any moonlight for whatever reason. Her hair did seem to hold a natural glow to it, subtle and shifting, but it was nothing in comparison to how it appeared after she’d fed.
Stubbornly, Ren had opened her mouth to question why it was a not-okay touch when the scorpion let the most delicious words out of his mouth. Could he touch her. Again her wings almost hummed with excitement behind her, stirring the air and causing loose bits of hair to dance about her shoulders and cheeks.
“Riv can touch,” the aurora replied, delight laced in her voice. So happy was she that she’d even attempted his name with the awkward v-sound on the end in hopes of pleasing him.
Letting out a little snort of laughter and a shake of her head, Doucette couldn’t help but be amused by the reaction of her charge. Surely Christmas had come early. As much as Ren seemed interested in exploring and understanding others, she wanted others to be interested in her as well.
