Time away from side projects and wandering he still hadn't heard back from Candace and life for the most part had gone back to normal. Today he was posted in a small tower out towards the jungles of the island.
Somewhere inside a few test Hunters where being let loose. Rampaging through the jungle while other Hunter's set traps and collected data on the process. Mostly it was testing variations of the barrier daggers. They where working on moving up from the minipet tests in the labs to something with a bit more punch. Mostly Hunters with large weapons and big charges.
Every once in a while somewhere in the jungle Roland would hear a hoot and a holler followed by explosions of sound as Hunters took turns smashing the barriers.
He had actually bet that it would take a cannon to break the latest barrier and was watching the monitor intently to see if the hunter on screen could blast the barrier down.

Candace had told him to take a left at a certain point and then a right to get back to where his dorm was.
Somehow he had ended up outside, in a jungle, probably very far away from said dorms.
The new coat was nice though, Ian decided, with an appreciative glance down at himself. It was nice and clean and white, and had been folded neatly and resting on top of his bed on the one tiny occassion that Ian had actually made it to his dorm room. But he'd decided he'd needed a snack (being in a pod for so long made for an unusually ravenous appetite), and after spending a great deal of timing finding the cafeteria and even longer eating his lunch (food should be savored, not scarfed), he'd wanted to go back to his dorm to rest and get settled.
Nope.
Instead he was somewhere else entirely and there were mild explosions every now and then that probably should have worried him but really didn't.
{ You are a troublemaker. }
The voice made him jump a little; it was still so strange to be sharing one's consciousness with another being, even if that being was in the form of a weapon used to fight monsters. Ian smiled.
That's my middle name, don't wear it out.
Naomi made a soft noise of disapproval inside of his head. Ian just padded further into the thick brush and poked his head curiously around a tree just in time to see another explosion.
He was going to like it here.

Roland had stopped to take a moment to fetch another mountain dew out the small cooler he had tugged along with him. The jungle was warm in the growing days of summer and the drink was nice and cool compared to the air around him.
Slumping back into his chair he tapped through the cameras cycling over to the test he had money on. The hunter was arming his cannon, nothing compared to Roar and Jerry, but a decent sized boom stick that looked like something right out of the old Ghost Buster movies.
"You better be able to take that barrier down," he added into the walkie talkie sitting beside him. "If you can't then this is the worst safe bet ever. Even mini pets where breaking this barrier in the labs."
The radio crackled for a moment with laughter, "Yer damn right!" Even Roland had to chuckle a bit before going back to the cameras. That's when he noticed a flash of white moving on the screen.
It was another hunter.
On the wrong side of the test!
"Abort abort! Stop don't shoot DON'T FREAKING SHOOT!" He scrambled for the radio running towards the towers exit. "Oie? Scared now ya gona lose some dosh?" The hunters laughed again as Roland scrambled out the tower practically falling off the ladder running to the test ground.
"HEY! HEEEEEEY! YOOOOU GET DOWN GET DOWN NOOOOOW!"
He grabbed the radio again, "Someones on the other side of the barrier dammit!"

Oops.
Maybe this wasn't the best place to be after all.
There was an explosion from somewhere to his left, and Ian craned his neck to see a bit more clearly, smoke billowing up towards the foggy sky. He could hear shouts and yells and then someone's fingers were in the collar of his nice, shiny new coat, dragging him backwards.
"Yer lucky that trainee spotted you," came a gruff voice from somewhere above Ian's head. "Damn trainees, thinkin' they know everything and can just waltz anywhere they like."
"Uh," said Ian, which was clearly the best answer to this sort of situation. Inside of his head, Naomi made another disapproving sound, somewhere between a sigh and a growl.
He found himself dumped unceremoniously into a room. " 'Ere," said the hunter who had dragged him out. "You saw him, he's all yours."
The door shut. Ian stared. Then he turned to look at the young man in the tower with him.
"...my bad."

Roland hadn't even made it out of the tower entirely before Ian was dragged in by one of the other hunters. Of course the test had been delayed now, somewhere Roland may or may not be winning a pot of money or losing fifty bucks.
Instead he was standing over another hunter who looked rather ashamed at the situation and completely unaware how close he was to the wrong end of a fully charged FEAR attack.
Roland looked up again at the other hunter who had dragged him in sighing as he was left with the trainee. What would Candace do? He looked back at Ian, at the design of his coat.
A mist.
Okay what would Candace REALLY do right now besides hug the guy and coo over him like a mother hen?
".... Did anyone give you a map before they set you lose? The jungles like the worst place you could end up." A hand reached out to help Ian up. "You're a mist right? You have the same design on your coat. Candace should have found you out by now to give you a run down."

Ian rubbed the back of his neck a tad sheepishly. "Well, I was told where to go and what to do," he said cheerfully. "But I kinda sorta maybe lost my way and wound up here. I was trying to go back to my dorm, but, well, we all see how that turned out now don't we."
He accepted the offered hand and stood, brushing a hand down the front of his coat to get rid of some of the dust. "Yep, that's what they tell me!" He replied, smiling. A smile which widened at the mention of a familiar name. "And yes, she's already found me. She was the one who woke me up, in fact, so here I am."
Ian stuck out a hand.
"I'm Ian. And you are..?"

"I'm impressed. The dorms are buildings, big, hard to miss, and the jungle is well. It's a jungle, you took a nice walk in the wrong direction entirely." He gave a bit of a tug hauling the other hunter up before letting him dust off.
"So you're a Unicorn, this makes what, four of us now? Lance, Before, me, and you, the only mist men around." He shrugged, "I guess they loosened the standards around males in the mist division or something." He only nodded at the topic of Candace. "She found me a few days later thanks to twitter after a Sun pulled me out."
He took Ian's hand offered and gave it a shake, "Roland Taft. Welcome to the jungle. Literally and metaphorically."

"Well," said Ian, in a very matter-of-fact sort of voice. "It's big, hard to miss, and I still missed it because I have no sense of direction whatsoever."
He held up a finger and added brightly, "But the fact that I admit it freely, should count for something, shouldn't it?"
Grinning a little, Ian reached out and grasped the other's hand. "Ian Rahal-Nazari. And thank you, I'm glad to meet another male in my apparently female division. I hope to be under your tutelage, since I have no idea what i'm doing."

Roland simply shook his head at the new hunter, his reaction was a bit odd yet refreshing in a way? At least he was realistic about his short comings and upfront about it.
"Okay fine, you get points for acknowledging it. Could be so much worse if you denied it all the time."
As they shook hands Roland offered a one shouldered shrug, "A pleasure since you're still in one piece. The number of males has grown, but you'll find a lot of the girls still know more then even me. I'm only a trainee at this point."
Checking his radio again he moved to a computer learning that all testing was considered done 'due to some crazy little poddling nearly blowing up'. Roland kept the last part of that to himself though as he turned back to Ian.
"Sad to say I don't even know half the time either, testings done here though so I can take you back to the dorms at the very least."
