It was mid morning as the femme walked along uncharted trails outside of her herd land. Being up before everyone else was often a blessing, it was a short period of time to collect her thoughts and enjoy some of the solitude her peaceful life had begun to offer. Instead of spending it walking the borders or in her extensive gardens she decided to take a look at some of the surrounding lands. So, she'd passed through the temperate rainforests, north to the small sea passing which laid between the mountain pass and the plains. It wasn't a easy trail; but it was one of the main routes for the grounded to get to the other parts of the world.
Today she gave herself space to collect herself, sort through a wide array of confusing feelings which plagued her heart.
She just received news that her darling son and his mate were expecting their second batch of kids soon; which made the eldering mare extremely happy. To have the pitter patter of little hooves around warmed her soul and lit up her days; especially when it came to her family and her herd. So many children were being born in these warm summer months, and while she was so proud to be a part of that, and how many requested her help and assistance with the kids....a small part of it made her sad too.
She was a mother to many, seven beautiful children to call her very own; but something deep down felt missing - perhaps that even though she was an experienced mother; she never experienced motherhood. She could see the swollen bellies of her family and the herd mares; only wondering what that was like. Yet every time she thought about finding someone who could offer such a gift to her and Cuauh....her thoughts drifted back to Kayla. While she loved the mare immensely for the gift of Subira and Zyanya....the pain and heartbeak of her words and actions of taking their third child remained a open wound in her soul. She imagined she must have turned out beautiful - and only hoped one day they would meet again. Yet the notion that a gift could turn so wrong so quick scared her. It was hell to get through it, she couldn't even fathom the severity of it with children she had birthed herself.
So, she remained stuck in a rock and a hard place; wanting to take that step...but too afraid what laid ahead with that next step.
Even so, with such a turmoil she suffered in silence - as much as she loved her mate to the ends of the earth and back there was a few things she couldn't talk to him just yet about. So as a few tears slipped down her cheeks as the breeze tousled her mane and tail. Ikinya had to remain strong for her herd and her family; it was something she needed to figure out on her own, before leaning to her family to support whatever choice she chose.
Ikinya would have to return soon, as she was sure whomever had awoken this morning would have found it odd she wasn't there to greet them in the main village. She didn't want to worry anyone either - since she didn't tell anyone she was leaving for a bit either.

They traveled by sunlight, and by moonlight they slept. It had been his idea from the start; she was just a minor adjustment to the plan. Pato didn't intend to have company when he decided to travel, but she insisted to come. And how could he turn his precious twin sister down? The plan he had was for her to stay with their adoptive mother while he left, and then when he grew tired of adventure, he'd come home to the both of them.
But Anatra always found a way to ruin his plans.
Even when they were foals; the little Usdia always insisted her protect her and guide her because he was her older brother, and older brothers look out for their little sisters. Which was true, Pato did want to make sure she was safe, but she always gave him a reason to worry. If she just did what little Usdias were supposed to, there would be no need to worry.
As they traveled, Pato could tell his sister began to grow annoyed. Her usual cheery, sisterly-annoying self had gone silent, and he had to keep checking on her to make sure she wasn't going to collapse on him. But now...now she was acting a fool.
"Careful, Ana." He warned quietly.
This mare was going to eventually be the death of him, if not someone else.
Her brother had called it a chance to 'explore the world'. However fun that may have sounded to him, however, was not as appealing to his twin. She terribly disliked traveling for too far a distance, and this had been the farthest they've been from home. What would Mother think, if she saw them traveling all the way to no-man's land? Anatra was sure she wouldn't approve of the distance away from the safety of their home, but she was also sure Pato never bothered to ask. He just left. He left during the middle of the night, when there was no risk of being caught, and barely made a peep. Anatra swore that if she hadn't felt the presence of her twin leave her dreams, he would have been able to leave on his own. But no. She woke up and confronted him of his plans.
She remembers him telling her he wanted to leave her behind because the world was too big and scarey for someone like her. They did, after all, just grow into adulthood and never once left the nest. But being the stubborn young mare that she was, she begged and pleaded with Pato until he agreed.
And now, here they were. Anatra was growing both tired and bored with the passing hours. So for the moment, the small, young Usdia began twirling her body as she galloped ahead of her brother, moving in a constant forward circular motion. To her displeasure, it awoke a reaction out of her twin, and she frowned at him, "you're no fun, Pato." Continuing to dance and slide around him, she stuck her tongue out. Although he was older by what he says was a few hours (more like a few minutes!) and much more in-tune with danger, he was not the boss of her. She had a mother and SHE was the boss of her. Not Pato. She could do whatever she pleased, no matter what he said. "I'm not going to fall, I promise. We've been walking for days, can't we go home now? I hate adventures." It wasn't so much the adventure that Anatra hated, but more of the fact of walking.
Too much walking drove her crazy! It was much too hard a workout.
But he wasn't going to turn around any time soon, and she wasn't going to go home without him. So she followed. Unwillingly or willingly, or maybe a bit of both, but she followed.

Allowing her gaze to drift above her she could head the gentle singing of the birds, serenading her with delicate songs of joy as they flitted above in the trees. The canopy of leaves above was a sight to see, the sunlight drifting through and dancing on the forest floor. While the tears still fell, slowly, the serenity of the scene she walked through made her soul feel a little more at ease with the big decisions ahead of her.
Might as well begin to head back anyways. Where was that bend in the road which turned to the low trails?
"Ah, there it is." Ikinya smiled, seeing the fork in the road and took it in stride.
The turn in the trail lead her going down a small decline in the land; solitary and peaceful was her walk as she remained drowning in her thoughts, worries, fears. She wasn't sure if she got the clarity she needed from the little excursion...but what she did know was she'd need to talk to Cuauh, find out his thoughts and hopefully gain the remaining clarity she needed back at the side of her beloved. Yet as she took a step along the hill she felt the ground slip from beneath her hoves and her body jerk down as she went skidding. Letting out a surprised yell she whirred by the trees down the slope as she struggled to keep herself on all fours. Her heart pounded painfully with the fright....but she was still alright. However it wasn't the least of her concerns as in seconds a pair of others came into her sight; and before she could even get out a 'Look out!' she had bowled one of them over before finally coming to a stop in a heap.
Groaning softly she was quick to snap out of her state of stupor and look down at the poor fellow Usdia; quickly removing herself as she felt panic well in her chest. "I'm so, so sorry....I lost my footing on the trail above....Oh gosh, are you alright?" While she wasn't expecting to run into anyone, let alone two Usdia by unfortunate circumstance. Ikinya hoped that no one was injured, she knew she was fine albeit a little sore...but it wasn't something that was detrimental to her health. She did notice though in the first fleeting moments, that the two looked nearly exactly the same.
Twins....who would have known!

Look out.
Coming from any which direction, those words had the potential to be two very scary words. They could have meant anything - look out for death, a rock, a cliff...anything...and they were usually shouted just about one or two seconds too late. And in Pato's case, they indeed were.
If Anatra hadn't moved as quickly or as perfect in timing as she had, it would have been her to take the fall, but instead, the creature that shouted 'look out', had collided into him. He wasn't expecting it, and boy did it hurt.
The voice sounded female, so Pato assumed that she had accidentally fallen, and took him with her as she tumbled downward. His body was sent a few feet to his left, and he rolled over before stopping himself. She was small, thankfully, so he didn't take too much of a tumble...but the shock of it all made the pain that much worse. His side hurt, he realized, as he laid there unsure of how to react. Clearly it wasn't her fault, and as she spoke she reaffirmed his assumptions that it was all just an accident, but it still hurt.
He supposed he was just thankful it wasn't Anatra would took the tumble.
"I'm...fine." He moaned quietly, blinking his eyes a few times before glancing up at the mare who hit him, with a friendly smile. It was then that his sister took control of the situation with her girlish words, and he laid there, unwilling to get up.
For now. He wanted to let the shock wear off before standing, just in case he fell again.
"I'm always telling her to be careful. I guess I ate my own words."
After a couple extra minutes of dancing and prancing, the mare stopped her little game of fun. It was no longer bothering Pato, as he had given up trying to stop her, and therefore, it was no longer that much fun. So Anatra settled to just walking...which was boring, yes...but they'd have to stop eventually, right? He'd have to get tired or sleepy eventually, and then she could officially rest. Or go home....one of the two. She began to hum to herself, keeping the beat of the hoofsteps she took, and tip-toed around Pato in a few swift motions. The Usdia had been expected her brother to protest, but instead, she heard a crash.
Two bodies collided.
Craning her neck to look behind her, she squeaked. Another Usdia had crashed into her brother in the very same spot she stood only moments before. If she hadn't moved...would she be on the ground right now? Oh my! She was silently glad she had decided to skip ahead. Anyway, the scene before her was both terrifying and hilarious, as the other Usdia had gotten up, embarrassed by what just happened. Her brother, on the other hand, still laid on the ground, a soft moan escaping him."Oh my goodness! Pato!? Are you alright?" Her tone was both concerned and mock-ish, as she stared at her twin. Anatra knew he could handle something like this, and yet, he wasn't getting up...was he playing the victim to get attention? It didn't seem like him....
She then turned to the Usdia who had crashed into her brother, and with an even more concerned expression, she gasped, "Ma'am, are you alright? That was so scary! You don't have to worry about us, Pato here takes care of us!" A soft giggle, as she went over to the collision in attempt to help one or both of them out. Anatra wasn't able to do much, but she could be there for moral support?
She could always be there for moral support! That was easy enough. The real question was whether or not she was wanted, or need. "Oh my gosh, you're so pretty! I'm Anatra, but I can go by Ana too. He's Pato. May we have your name?" There. That was simple and elegant enough, wasn't it? Her instinct was to squeal and freak out, but not in front of a total stranger. No...this mare could potentially be a new friend, a brand new, totally unrelated first...Anatra's first! And she didn't want to ruin that chance. So she kept her cool.

"Again...I am so...so sorry..." Ikinya felt completely embarassed, not quite for falling but she should have known better. Should have walked further to the right, should have been more focused on the path than her thoughts. She looked him over with scrutinizing but worried eyes, for the faintest scratch, the faintest wince to any of his movements. Although Ikinya didn't quite like the sound of that moan, his smile eased some of her worries, before her attention was taken by his twin...his female twin.
"I'm alright...a little sore but nothing some rest wont cure." She smiled reassuringly, even though after she felt not so reassured herself. "Nonsense...I'm the one that came crashing into you, it was really my fault for being too caught up in my thoughts than were my hooves where landing." She knitted her brows together but graciously accepted the help up from Anatra. "Thank you.." So, the poor fellow she managed to bowl over was Pato; and as the female introduced herself, Anatra.
Ikinya felt a small heated blush cross her cheeks, not really used to being called such. At least not from anyone but Cuauhcoatl. "You're much too kind, Ana...and again...I'm so sorry Pato..." She let out a sigh, everything in her tone and how she held herself was un eased. Ikinya just felt so responsible, and she didn't even have the resources to offer him immediate help. "I have healers in my herd, if you feel the slightest ache or pain please let me know. We are not all that far off from it in fact if you would like to be checked out..." Gosh...did she feel awful!
"My name is Ikinya.." The mare bowed her head in acccustomary polite greetings, flashing a smile towards the two. As much as her guts were twisting inside from the ordeal she still was excited to meet more of her kind here. "Are you both from around here? I have to say I don't see many Usdia's around anymore....been just so busy with the herd..."
Truly, the last time she'd really headed out of her lands and surrounding area was to attend Malis' ceremony; and spirits knew how long ago that was!
"...well, asides the ones in my family but I see them all the time." She added with a chuckle, while not all her family were Usdia's like her there were plenty around to make her not feel like the short one in the group! "Its really nice to meet you both, first impression of being a boulder aside I hope.."
