To say Sophie was nervous would be an understatement. The ghoul had quite literally spent the morning preparing for Bastion's return - and maybe even some of the previous night. This time, she had ample warning and enough time to prepare. Her room was, for once, tidy; everything she owned put away neatly where it belonged. On the coffee table sat two plates, two cups, a pitcher of water and some spookies she had made herself last night. They didn't look very good - all odd shaped and some a little burnt around the edges but they didn't taste terrible. Did horseman even eat spookies? Well, she was about to find out.
She was dressed rather casually; a white t-shirt and a pair of denim shorts that cut off high enough to show of her legs, but low enough to leave some modesty. Her hair, of course, was in her usual pigtails; two bows holding them in place. She didn't bother with shoes, but she'd kept some close by in case they decided to go out somewhere. Rushing around, she did some last minute straightening up; fluffing cushions, flicking away specs of dust only she in her current OCD state could see and checking herself in the mirror over and over.
When she was happy - or at least she believed it was close enough to the time that she had to start calming herself down - Sophie just stood there in the middle of the room; staring at the door and waiting for the knock.

Bastion, to his credit, had not been nervous about the reunion all the way until he'd arrived. He'd spent the previous night sketching designs for his cousin's newest piece of jewelry, and he'd gotten a little meltwork done, and picked out what gems seemed flawless enough for it. Then he'd gotten distracted with a design idea that had him sketching again, and soon he was working on a new piece, but only the barest bones of it. Neither piece had been completed in a day - but he never finished his work that quickly. He took his time, and tried different things, before a piece was ever completed by his hand. Quality was not determined by speed. Then he'd spent just a little time fiddling with the phone. He had hoped that he might have had the skills to figure out how to work it without Sophie's aid, simply because it would have been clever of him to do so. But he'd failed. So everything went back in it's box, and he'd bedded down for the night. When the next morning came, he'd spent just a little more time in the design process of his work, before grabbing the bag with all of his phone supplies and yet another rose, and heading to Sophie's dorm. There was no fussing. No nervous jitters. He very much looked forward to seeing Sophie again, and working out the mechanics of this skellyphone his cousin had purchased from him. But it was the moment he'd reached the door and rose his hand up to knock, that a wave of anxiety overtook him, and froze him to the core. In the end, Sophie would hear a knock, but when she opened the door, no one would be there. But on the floor, another crystal red rose had been left for her. It was all he could do for the moment, because he'd run off to be sick in the boil's room.

The knock made her jump a little and she took a few slow, hesitant steps towards the door and opened it a crack, peeking outside. When she saw no one, she raised a brow and stuck her head out, looking up and down the hallway. No one. It wasn't until she had half closed the door that the glint of the rose caught her eye and she bent down to pick it up. Clutching it to her chest, pouting a little; brows furrowing in worry.
Why was there a rose and no Bastion? Had he sent it there as a way of telling her he was no longer interested? She walked back into her room, too engrossed in her thoughts to even bother closing the door now. With a huff, she flopped onto the couch, pressed her face into one of the pillows and groaned. What a silly girl she'd been.

Approximately four minutes later, Bastion returned to the door, feeling dizzy, but less anxious. He knocked on it, and then almost started to run again, but he planted his feet on the floor and refused to budge.
"Sophie?" He asked the door. "My apologies for disappearing. Please forgive me. May I come in?"
The rose was gone. Was that a good sign, or a bad one? Whether the rose was still intact or not was probably the only way to tell.. which meant he had to get inside. He turned his head and checked his breath - odorless, thank Medea. That could have been unfortunate.

Sophie looked up from the couch at the door; wondering if perhaps she was imagining things. Was she a little misty eyed? She ran her fingers through her hair, combing out the tangles and smoother her clothes. Quickly straightening out the cushions - flipping a slightly dampened one over, she rubbed her eyes and skipped to the door, swinging it open with a smile and almost bursting with excitement.
"Of course, come in, come in." she grabbed his arm and tugged him in the door before he could disappear again - or change his mind. "Make yourself at home. I baked some spookies but I don't know if horseman like spookies." She rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. "They're a bit ugly but I promise they won't make you sick." Shifting awkwardly, she closed the door behind them and waited for Bastion to sit before deciding her next move. All of a sudden she was glad she had an arm chair as well as the sofa because she wasn't sure she'd be able to handle sitting that close to him.

Bastion took in a breath when she opened the door, but he held it, stunned when she pulled him inside. She seemed happy to see him, which meant he needn't worry about her being upset. So he followed, gentle as a lamb, and sat down exactly where she led him, flopping easily into the cushions of the sofa. It was at this point that he finally exhaled, his face flushing with the sudden need for oxygen.
And then he looked at the spookies.
"You baked?" He leaned in, staring at them with absolute confusion. On his lips the rest of the question died; he couldn't bear to actually ask if she'd made them for him. It was far more likely that she'd just wanted spookies. Still, it was kind to offer, and he took one instantly. "They're not ugly. And trust me, nothing can make me sick right-"
It had taken him a while - perhaps it was just the nervousness of returning to her room. But Bastion hadn't looked at Sophie properly until that moment, and his words died in his throat. He put the cookie down, and stood up, wiping his fingers against his pants while striding over urgently to stand in front of her. His fingertips cupped under her chin and tugged her face up close to his, and his eyes stared intently. "Sophie." He whispered carefully. "Have you been crying?"

His sudden presence in front of her took her by surprise and her eyes widened. In the excitement of his arrival, she had completely forgotten about how horrid she'd felt only moments before. Her eyes look away and she pursed her lips. "Oh no, of course not," she said with a really pathetic attempt at a laugh. "Just allergies. Yes, that's it. Allergies. I did a lot of dusting, you see." She knew he wouldn't by her excuse; she wasn't even convincing herself.
She grabbed the end of one of her pigtails with both hands, stroking it. Still her eyes avoided his and for a moment it appeared as if she was just going to leave the question unanswered. Eventually, she spoke. "Well, I thought you'd changed your mind and weren't coming," she laughed. "A little bit of a silly reaction - I was surprised by it myself." Her hands dropped from her hair and she met his eyes now, smiling. "But you came, so it's okay. I'm okay."

Allergies. Bastion kept his eyes trained on her, with very obvious disbelief. When she caved in and admitted the truth, his lips turned up in a smile, for only a brief moment. The smile died away almost instantly as the words sunk in, and he realized he was at fault.
More importantly..
"I don't understand." He whispered, tilting his head in confusion. "You were sad?" He swallowed, hard. "Because you thought I wasn't coming?"
He'd been wrong, before. Apparently his stomach could still churn dangerously.
He didn't know what to say. He absolutely did not know what to do. It was a situation he'd never been in, in his entire life, and he felt guilty for how his heart stuttered with happiness that someone was that affected by him. He was at a loss for how to handle the situation - and he realized he'd put himself in a position where he was going to be at a loss for how to handle.. many things.
And poor Sophie would be the one to suffer.
"I'm so sorry.." He whispered hoarsely, brushing his thumbs against her cheeks. "I didn't realize I would upset you. I didn't realize I could upset you. I'm not.. not used to this."
It was embarrassing to admit that.
"Will you forgive me?"

She felt her cheeks flush and her brow furrowed a little, fingers twitching to stroke her pigtails for comfort. She resisted, though and rocked and shifted uncomfortably for a few seconds. This wasn't something she had wanted to admit; but she could tell he was beating himself up over it and that wasn't the reaction she was expecting - nor was it one she enjoyed. She didn't want him to feel bad for her having a brief silly girl moment. But was it really that silly?
She had truly been upset when she thought he wasn't coming. Not because she'd been through all this trouble or because she was looking forward to prom; but because she was genuinely looking forward to spending time with him. Her eyes widened a little and she felt herself get flustered. Oh. Oh dear.
Sophie cleared her throat and gave him a smile. "Of course. You're here now so it's okay, right?" Then she shifted uncomfortably. "But don't feel inclined to stay for my sake. If you don't want to be here that's fine. I don't want to be a bother.."

It was a silly game of turnaround, and he thought he just might enjoy playing it.
"I do many things for your sake, my rose." Bastion murmured slyly. "But I stay for my sake. So no more tears." He let his hands fall away from her face, and sat back down on the couch. "So. Let us see about these spookies you have baked. And then, you shall have to help me with a purchase I have acquired." He held up the bag in his hand. "Skellyphone!"
He was just so proud of it.
"I have not managed to figure out what to do with it. You are my only hope." The spookie went in his mouth, and he crunched down on it - it was crisp, from being just the slightest bit overdone, but it tasted just fine to him. "Absolutely marvelous. You are a craftswoman and a cook - ah, what a lucky man would your husband make."

Sheepishly, she looked away. "I actually burnt the first two batches," she laughed. "I'm afraid I'm quite terrible when it comes to cooking because I don't need to eat that often." The mention of husbands and their luck left her cheeks burning a soft pink.
At the mention of a skellyphone, Sophie quirked a brow. He really had gone and bought one and she couldn't help but feel a little giddy. She flopped down on the single arm chair, taking a spookie of her own before she took the bag from him and opened it up. "No problem," she said, slipping it out of the box and into her hand. "Happy to help." Holding it up, she pointed to a green button. "Hold this down to turn it on," she did so and the screen lit up. She paused for a moment, looking at the distance between the two couches. This was going to be hard to do without sitting next to him so she stood up and settled down next to him, wiggling to get comfortable.
Pulling out her own phone, she set it on her lap and handed his phone back to him. "Okay now you can add my number," she leaned over him, her body pressing into his ever so slightly though she either didn't notice or didn't care. "Press the menu button and then the phone book symbol," she pointed at the symbol. "And this is my number. Just press the number buttons. 666 - 471 - 7638."

"Three batches? You must have really been in the mood for spookies to have tried that hard. But these are delicious, worth all of the attempts. If there is one thing I have learned, it is that practice makes perfect." He took another cookie, and bit down on it happily. "I go through several attempts at metalwork before I'm happy with a frame for a gem. And don't get me started on actually finding flawless gems nowadays.." He rolled his eyes dramatically.
Finally, the mysteries of the skellyphone were being revealed to him. He saw the tiny green button she was pointing to, and made note that it all begins there. Just a touch from her fingertips made the screen light up, and he looked on with excitement, craning to see what the screen showed. But she seemed to realize his trouble, and moved closer. His body straightened as rigid as a board when she settled beside him, and he stared down at her in shock. The phones kept her attention, and gave him just enough time to collect his thoughts.
She had such pretty hair.
No, those were the wrong thoughts to collect.
"Sorry, could you go over that again? I didn't catch that.."

She laughed a little and reaching over even more, pointed to the symbol she had previously mentioned. She pressed the screen and it changed to a list of contacts. Pointing to a contact named 'My number' she said "This is your number. I'll add it to my phone in a sec'," She pressed a little + symbol and a new page opened up. "Okay so you add my name here," she pointed to a little text box. "When you press it, the keyboard shows up and you can type my name." She demonstrated as much.
"So just put my name in there then hit the next box and you can put my number in there," she repeated her number for him. "And if you press this button, you can take a picture so you know who's calling." Picking up her phone, she fiddled with it for a moment before lifting it in front of him. "Like this. Smile!"

He tried to pay attention, this time. He really did. Every time he felt the distraction pulling him to look upwards, at the strands of hair curling in the pigtails, his face pinched in focus and he looked back down at the phone.
"Slowly.. until I adjust.." His fingers did not want to find the keys fast enough, but he managed to get it all in eventually.
And then she told him to smile, but all she got was a deer-in-headlights look, slightly flushed and just a little confused. His lips managed to turn up in the tiniest of smirks just in time for the flash, but as soon as the light burst out, he saw stars and dots of blackness in his vision.
"What.. just.." He closed his eyes and rubbed them hard until they all went away.
"So you've taken my picture?" He held his phone out, and carefully found the button she mentioned. When he pushed it, her face showed up on the screen, and he paused there. This way, without infringing on anything awkward, he could just look at her.
"Sophie, I'm sure I've said this before," He murmured as he held the phone up. "But, you're very pretty."

His reaction to her taking his picture was cute and she smiled a little. Despite his surprise and apparent unawareness of what a picture was; the picture turned out rather cute. She looked at his phone real quick, quickly typing in his number and hitting save. Popping her phone down for the time being, she managed to smile in time for his photo and then she blushed deeply. She fiddled with the hem of her shirt, looking away coyly in time for the second picture. Oops, sorry.
She mumbled something inaudible for a few seconds; perhaps something along the lines of 'thank you, but I'm not really'. Looking up she cleared her throat. "Ah, you're very.. handsome yourself," it came out quickly and she looked away as the words left her mouth. Jack. Could she be normal for two seconds? Well, she was being perfectly normal for herself and she supposed she was reacting better than she thought she would. Her brow furrowed a little and she shifted on the couch; picking up a cushion and clutching it for comfort.
"Ah, I should show you how to use your phone more," she shifted on the couch and brought her legs up, tucking them under her. "Mmm.. what else..," she tapped her lips. "Oh right! Sending messages." Once more she leaned into him; pressing the menu button and then the little envelope symbol. "Press this box to select my name," she did as much. "Then this box and type your message and then when you're done hit send."
