Rayolun waited until the sun sank so that his skin would shift before he applied his normal camouflage paint. He painted wandering stripes and spots of dark black unto his pale sin to help him blend into the moonlit shadows. Once he was sure it was dry, he gathered up his gear and slunk off into the night to hunt for food. His solitary life style suited him just fine, meeting up with other hunters for a day and then moving on.

He had gone a month so far without seeing anyone, the closest thing to a person he'd seen so far were the tracks and campsite of his uncle a week ago. That suited him right down to the roots. People could be quite irritating somedays.

Biroki was way off his usual path to his favorite plant-gathering spots. That part was not unusual- the shifter had a habit of getting distracted and wandering off. He could easily find his way home and could handle himself- if the meek Biroki could be considered to have major postive traits (that everybody agreed was postive) it would be his magic power and his sense of direction.
See, he had seen a pretty flower, and then another one, and then another, and before he knew it he was picking a lovely bouquet. He'd probably put them in water and... oooo, there was an idea... He could put them in the home he'd just built (he wore those work blisters with pride) and when he showed it to Zuri they would be right there on the table, waiting for her. Yes that was the perfect plan.
He thought so much about her lately- she was always on his mind. He had forgotten what it was like to not think about his blue-skinned girl all the time.
He would have headed back home at nightfall, but there were nightflowers that caught his eye- and more than a few funguses. Wouldn't it be excellent if some flowers in the bouquet glowed? Like his love for her?
He was in a good mood. He felt like he was on top of the world. He felt, for once, like a real man.
And then a twig broke and he felt his stomach clench with fear.
What was that? A predator? There to attack little old him?
He held the bouquet with one hand and grabbed his staff with the other, trying not to shake as much as he really wanted to.

Rayolun was headed deep into the jungle when he spotted an odd sight. A full grown man picking.. flowers? Now why was he doing something that girly? Those flowers didn't seem to him to have any medicinal purpose.... His attention wasn't on where he was going so his foot slipped and snapped a twig. He saw the other shifter suddenly tense and held his flowers and staff at ready.
Rayolun chuckled at the others reaction and how he held is bouquet and staff at ready. How was the flower gonna hurt him? Make him sneeze? The staff was another problem, but he didn't feel like fighting so that shouldn't be an issue.

He thought for a moment an d figured, why not go out and talk? Otherwise the poor dude was probably gonna stand there ridiculously for a while...
He dropped down out of the tree and landed silently on the ground.

"You know how ridiculous you look right now? Your flower weapon has me all a-tremble." He drawled with an amused tone.

Biroki was a bit taken aback by what looked like a striped shifter.
"F-flower weapon?" what was the other shifter (he thought?) talking ab...
He looked at the bouquet in his hand and lowered it. ".. I...I wasn't going to use it as a weapon."
No! That would ruin the flowers and there wasn't much point to it anyway... "No, I... Show yours..." the man had already shown himself. "I... Who are you?" He relaxed a bit. Shifters weren't as dangerous as Alkidikes, but he had to remember that it had been a fellow shifter that had attacked Zuri's roati and had been wanted for assaulting other shifters.
He was a mage now! He had to be brave to protect the tribe, and nobody was safe until he could discern otherwise... and he had never seen this shifter before.

Rayolun looked at the older man for a second. Why was he stuttering so much? Was he really that nervous? Ray knew he himself wasn't that impressive, his body wan meant for speed and stealth, not brute strength and intimidation. He shrugged, maybe he was just nervous about meeting people, Rayolun knew he himself wasn't the best at holding a conversation or meeting people...

Sitting down in the shade of a tree he smiled, "I'm Rayolun. You?"

Gods, Biroki. You get a promotion and suddenly you're jumpy. Get a grip. he berated himself, Look. He's sitting. He's not a threat.
He walked over and sat down, sticking his flowers into the bag so that they peeked out and weren't crushed.
"Biroki... N-nice to meet you."
Heck, the shifter was younger, not that that really meant much really- a young shifter could still be bad...
Or could be perfectly good. he reminded himself.
He really was jumpy. This was absurd. Was this because of love, or just him being an idiot.
Maybe just him being an idiot.
"S-sorry about the challenge. I didn't mean anything by it."
Yeah. It wasn't as though Rayolun was particularly suspicious or anything. Just striped. With pigment.
And there is nothing wrong with that... he reminded himself.
But he had to ask- it did look interesting and he was curious.
"W-whats with the stripes?"

Rayolun was amused at the antics of the older man. This one really didn't have any confidence did he? Or was he just really really shy? Oh well, not that it mattered. He wasn't a threat so there was nothing to worry about.

He grinned slightly when he heard the question. "Don't worry about it, I did startle you so the normal reaction is to challenge. As for my stripes, I do this so I can blend i better. A large black shadow in the day time is rather obvious, as is a bright whit shadow. So I paint stripes and lines to make it look like I am not a man shaped shadow but instead just a patch of shadow and light. Makes it easier to hunt."

Biroki was glad that the other hadn't taken offense to him. It certainly wasn't his intention! But Rayolun seemed to think that challenging was normal, and Biroki supposed it was.
... So he was marking himself up to blend in? That was certainly something Biroki hadn't thought of doing before. Then again, he didn't hunt often- he was happy when he didn't encounter most of the bigger creatures of the jungle at all.
Then again... What an idea. He could sneak up on things and observe them, and he did like observing... Maybe this blending in was a good idea, but it also looked like it took a lot of effort to do... And you had to change it out when you shifted. That meant twice a day.
"In the darker parts of the jungle though..." started Biroki, thinking about the possibilities, "Wouldn't it be better to not have light parts at all? Even in the daytime?"
It was, after all, dark at the forest floor.

Rayolun saw the older man relax, and was relived. He wasn't comfortable with others too much, and the thought that a person who was his elder was so jumpy and nervous was rather.. weird. The majority of elders he meet were other hunters, all confident in themselves, quite unlike this one.

He smiled at the question, "In the darker parts of the jungle, yes. I go unpainted. But I normally hunt in the canopy where light still reaches since it is safer there and food more plentiful some days. Though there are always crystals and creatures that give off light, so sometimes the paint I wear is not pale, but instead a gray or blue." He shrugged, for some reason those helped him blend in better at night, he wasn't quite sure.

"Th... that makes sense, but I'm surprised you can find enough p-pigment" said Biroki, quietly. He wasn't about to go around painting himself, but he knew herblore and how to get pigments. "... Do you make your own paints?" he asked.
A few of the pigments, like a bluish one, were- if he remembered correctly- somewhat complicated to extract and more than a little dangerous.
Or maybe he used a different pigment.

Rayolun gave him a smile. "I do make my own paints, I don't live in a village so everything I need, I must get myself. Some are rather difficult to get or make. But I have time. Plus when I'm out hunting I run across many things that can be used, so I gather them up and stash them away for later. Some of the stuff I use are only available during certain seasons and need to be made right away to get the most out of the plant."

He looked at Biroki, "Do you know anything about plants and dyes?" Cause if he did, maybe he could teach Rayolun them and he'd have an easier time with his paints.
PostPosted: Fri Jul 12, 2013 12:38 pm

"Well, ah, I mostly know about healing herbs and such." he said, "I do know a few dyes. M-mostly for clothing though..." I'm sorry! he managed to stop himself before he started apologizing. Why did he want to apologize? Everything was fine! Nobody was trying to kill him. This was a nice shifter guy who was willing to chat a bit! There was no reason to apologize.
"I... I do know a good way to make body paste!"[/b[] he said, his expression brightening as he hit upon something that he could percieve as useful. "You can put dye in it and it won't seep through the skin and poison the blood..." because that was a risk, wasn't it, with body paints? Reshel had berated a warrior for that once- using too much body paint.
Exceot he had been using it for looks, not chamouflage... which meant that it would be WORSE for Rastian because he was using a lot of it... Biroki's eyes flicked over Rastian's drawn on markings, suddenly worried.
"... do you feel allright?" he asked, a little anxiety creeping back into his voice.
It's probably okay, he probably knows that already. Don't be an idiot.
But now he was worried about his new friendly aquaintence.

A pity that he doesn't know too much about paint.. though the cloth dye would be useful, he thought to himself as Biroki stumbled thorough his words. Rayolun chuckled at the last comment; As if he would use poisonous paint! That'd just make him sick and weak, then he wouldn't be able to hunt! ...Though there had been those first few tries... Not that he needed to mention those!

He waved his hand "Psh, I don't use the poisonous ones! I usually make a paste from berries and non deadly plants and thicken it with stuff. Nothing bad for me! Though your idea with dye's is a good one.. but aren't dyes usually bad for you?"
PostPosted: Mon Aug 05, 2013 8:20 pm

"Well that's good..." said Biroki, a little embarrassed. Of course someone experienced in paints wuldn't use poisonous ones. That was just stupid.
"Stuff like.." he mentioned a few known nontoxic thickeners, "Those, right?" he asked.
He really knew little else about paint, and certainly knew very little about how to put them on his own body. He'd never put on anything other than medicinal ointment.
“Not if you use the right ones.” there were some used for tatooing, he knew. He'd never get one- the very thought of poking himself repeatedly with needles and ink was just terrifying. He hadn't even put cream on acne when he used to have them, let alone body paint. ”You thicken it, like you already do, but... I think it sticks longer? To the skin? When you use dye... So you don't have to keep putting it on and off... ”
He hadn't really thought about it, but he supposed you would need to make the pastes thick, otherwise they would flow right off... especially...
"Ah, if you don't mind me asking, what do you do when it rains?"

Ray listened to the list of possible thickeners, he did use some of them ,others were a bit difficult to get and some he'd never heard of. He nodded to show that, yeah, he used those.

Rayolun chuckled, "Well, dye and tattoos would be nice. But I'm a shifter. My skin shifts so I would have to have two sets of tattoos, one light and one dark." A problem, and he didn't want to have to go through the pain of a full body tattoo. He was sure that he wouldn't be able to hunt for himself for a few days if he got that. Plus, 2 sets of tattoos? He didn't want that!

"And for rain? Visibility is really bad so I use traps for those and don't worry about the paint. I try and hole up during the rain and hunt after wards anyways. It's safer that way."
