The trees in this particular grove were bigger and stronger than most others in the swamp. These ones were something more similar to those of a forest, built sturdy and tall. There was soft and springy moss covering the ground in a thick carpet, and even without company it made for a good night's sleep. Well, most nights anyway.

Chanterelle was lying curled up next to her new found companion with her nose pointed upward as she watched the fireflies above. They dove and wove in and out of the branches of the mighty trees in a lighthearted way. It was as if their dance reached out to anything else that glowed in the night, for the fungus and flowers in the area had lit up brightly to match. Her pale eyes followed the little bugs as her mind churned, deep in thought.

Chanterelle was fairly open, no matter who she was talking to or around, but there was something that left her feeling... confused. What made this mare so easy for her to open up to? She only knew her for these past few weeks and had already shared stories and her feelings about her family. Sure, she had compared things before to help ease someone's pains and to show that she understood by relation... but why did she feel like she could trust this mare so implicitly? Was it the way she held herself? Or maybe it was just that this mare had opened up to her because she had been caught in a moment of vulnerability... That seemed to make the most sense. Perhaps she was only returning the favor, to level the playing field between them and not hold power over Aella.

Aella's head rested against Chanterelle. The soothing sound of the other mare's heart beat filled her ears. Somehow, over the past few days it had become an anchor, a tether to happiness and light. She had found it in what she'd always figured was a gloomy old swamp.

Yet within it, resided a mare. And within that mare resided the most beautiful hearbeat she'd ever heard in the world, save one.

But that heartbeat had been different hadn't it? She had loved the stallion it belonged to with all her heart and soul, every fiber of her being loved him. And when he died, she thought she had died too. She had thought she would never live or love again. She would never be the same.

And here she was lying in the murky swamp while fireflies danced above her head, the cushion of her hair making a pillow for her while she watched Chanterelle without her knowing.

The lights of the swamp danced around them, and reflected. She didn't want to interrupt this moment, and she didn't want to think of all the implications and meanings of things. She didn't want to think anymore period, she just wanted to be.

She wanted to be with Chanterelle.

And for a moment, Aella realized, she didn't know what that meant.

To be.

To be what with Chanterelle?

The fireflies came closer and illuminated their little nest, but Aella didn't raise her head--she didn't want to part from the beautiful sound that pulsed into her skin and through her body.

She didn't understand, she'd only felt like this once before--and she had vowed never to feel that way again.

How was this happening? How could...could she....was she falling in love?

Many thought that the swamp was a dark, drab place. Others even thought that it was lifeless and still. It couldn't be any more the opposite, but you had to know how and where to look. Chanterelle grew up here, and it always brought a smile to her face to watch the flowers fold away for the night as the fungi unfolded. She was ever content to watch the critters run about through the low-laying branches and across the mangrove roots. It wasn't without it's dangers, but the swamp was a beautiful place, if one knew how to see it. Chanterelle wished more individuals knew how to see beauty.

There was something beautiful about the balance of nature and how it swung back and forth but always came back to center. Why were so many blind to these small things? These simple things?

Chanterelle inhaled deeply, her eyes slid closed for a moment and she was one with this world. She could hear the buzzing of the fireflies as their wings brushed against one another. She could smell the dampness of the moss, but the crispness of the bark on the trees. She could feel the soft undergrowth and breeze caress her all the same. And somewhere amid that and a dozen other things, Chanterelle was one with Aella. She could hear her breathing evenly, smell that distinct scent of her dry coat and flowing hair, and she could feel her warm side pressed up against her own with an ear pressed to her chest. Aella seemed to have taken to her heartbeat as if it were her lifeline, but Chanterelle could not object. She was finding comfort in it herself, it was, afterall, keeping her going, too.

The heartbeat thudded on evenly, as she watched Chanterelle. This couldn't be happening, could it?

She watched the blue eyes looking off in the distance, the twinkling of the amber jewels in the firefly light. The luminous blue of the girl beside her shining so beautiful, the skin smooth and supple. Aella adored the proud tilt of her head, the blue braid and the bangs that fell in front of her eyes.

She buried her head closer to her heart. The same rhythmic beating in her ears like a song, like a well loved tuned. She could stay away from Chanterelle for a century, even though they thought made her heart ache, and when she found her again she'd still remember the perfect beat of her heart, be insync with the rhythm of the loving soul.

Aella wanted to say something, she wanted to have Chanterelle look at her with those luminous eyes...but she didn't want to break the spell. She wouldn't do it.

But try as she might, her thoughts drifted to what it would feel like to have Chanterelle's lips on hers. Would they be soft and hesitant? Or would they be burning, filled with passion blistering in it's heat that there would never be enough?

I can't...I can't be in love, not with anyone...not with Chanterelle...

But Aella had been in love before, and if this wasn't it---then she had never known it.

Without looking down at the other mare, Chanterelle could see her clearly in her mind's eye. It was actually quite strange the details that she had memorized. The sun-dappling of her pale coat that in itself spoke of the desert. That vivid raspberry hair and the way it parted just enough over her right eye so she could see out from behind that curtain. And the almost... was it timidness?... to those crimson eyes every time that they looked at her. In fact... the way they looked at her... they were speaking on their own even when Aella was not. But what were they trying to say?

Aella had told her that she had lost her mate, and in a most tragic way in Chanterelle's opinion. He was dying, and there was nothing Aella could do about it, so instead of being there for him, his last wish was for her to leave him to die alone. What a horrid thing to experience. Not only could she not save her beloved, but she also couldn't spend those last few moments with them. Perhaps selfish, but Chanterelle didn't quite understand how the stallion could have asked that of her. The only possible reason she could think of, was perhaps he didn't want to see the pain in his mate's eyes as she stayed by his side, helpless to save him. Raising a brow as she mused, she decided that perhaps that warranted such a request now that she thought about it. But it was a very complex manner none-the-less, and she would never wish such a situation on anyone. And how Aella got through it was beyond the younger mare. And then to top it all off, she couldn't go back to her family, for reasons yet unknown to Chanterelle.

But Chanterelle wasn't one to push. She would let this mare share what she wanted to share with her, and at her own pace. Unbeknownst to Chanterelle, it was in fact Aella that was allowing Chanterelle to move at her own pace, and maybe, just maybe figure out if she returned all those untold feelings.

Aella's heart fluttered in her chest as she gazed up at Chanterelle like she was the moon and stars; all the heavens wrapped in one. To gaze at her was simply impossible to avoid. The feelings that stoked the cold embers of her heart, started to build up white hot into all-consuming flames. She would burn up with the heat of them.

She had known the desert sun, she had known the thirst of sand and sun, but this was a completely different kind. Insatiable and inscrutable, something she hadn't felt before. She had loved only once before---and that was gone, and now she felt those same feelings growing in the pit of her stomach, blossoming out like wildfire.

She had vowed not to love again, never again--but her heart had decided against her. Aella knew that she would never stop loving him, that he was the love of her life--It had been a love she had grown into as they had grown older.

But this was different, it was so sudden that it took her breath away. This was the kind of love that you look across an open space, and know your heart was no longer yours.

And for now it was a secret, something that was hers to keep. Because what if these budding feelings weren't returned? He had been the love of her life, but perhaps she'd been given a new life--one last chance to love as he had hoped fr her.

Her heart thumped inside the cavern of her chest, and she lifted her head away from the safety of Chanterelle's beautiful heart. She pressed her nose into Chanterelle's neck and then draped her own neck around her.

Chanterelle's heart beat and pulsed in her throat, she felt the quickening of it and it gave her hope that maybe..just maybe she felt the same. Their hearts fell in rhythm with each other like perfectly matched music.
