Hobbies:
Reading -- Books are something that have always been readily available at home, so it is probably little surprise that Briar loves reading and it’s not uncommon for him to have two or even three books to read in his backpack. Briar’s favourite stories are what he sees as the grand ones – the ones full of magic and fantastical creatures where the hero gets to do amazing things (and where he wishes he could be the hero a little), he’s also likes books on animals – particularly those on cats (cats are pretty neat looking) and foxes (since foxes are clever). When not at home or at the library his favourite reading spot is the first branch of one of the trees in the center of the local park.
Swimming -- Briar really enjoys being in water, can be found down at the community centre swimming pool every Sunday afternoon (as it tends to be quieter) and tends to go visit the water park at least twice during the summer break (again trying to get his parents or his brother to take him on days when it's quieter). Briar’s been swimming since he learnt at about 6, although he swims for the fun of it rather than competitively. His favourite stroke is the backstroke, although the breaststroke comes a close second. When in the pool he loves floating on his back and playing with the pool floats – especially the non-flat ones and can often be found resting on one of the long rectangular pool floats when not doing any actual swimming.
Pen top collecting -- Briar loves pen tops, especially the animal head ones and has a whole set of them for his pens. Actually he probably has more pen tops than pens as if he sees any new ones that he considers funky then he can’t resist using some of his pocket money to buy them for his collection. Briar’s favourite pen top is a panda pen head that was part of a birthday present from his brother and usually has it either gracing the top of one of his pens in a pocket somewhere or tucked safely away in his pencil case.
Virtues:
Determined -- once he sets his mind to doing something, Briar will keep at it with all the tenacity of a terrier – he might not be loud about it but if there’s something he wants then he’s going to put all his energy and skills towards getting it and will not be easily dissuaded from his goal – 'nothing ventured nothing gained' is something he's heard often from his parents and Briar certainly tries to hold true to the saying.
Hard-working -- Briar knows that you need to put the effort in if you want to get anything done and to that end tends to throw himself 110% into things. He's a long term kid, rather than a 'now, now, now' one and is happy to put the work into things in order to reap the rewards later, even if it means putting work into something that he may not personally be particularly passionate about.
Loyal -- Briar is devoted to those that he is close to, happy to freely share in his possessions and time. Although he would not take the blame for someone else’s misdoings, if someone he considers a friend is in trouble then Briar will stick with them through thick and thin and help them to the best of his ability (even if it’s as little as sharing his sweets in an attempt to cheer them up).
Flaws:
Independent -- As the youngest child in a household where the parents work long hours and his big brother spends most of the year at college – Briar has gotten used to getting things done for himself and loves the feeling that being able to do for himself gives him. The flip side to this is that Briar hates admitting that he needs help and if asked if he needs a hand his stock response will almost always be ‘No’. A quick way to annoy him is to butt in when he’s doing something, especially if he hasn’t asked you to and you can expect him to be pretty frosty with you if you try to do so. After all he doesn’t need your help – can’t you see he was doing fine on his own.
Own company > Groups -- Briar finds his own company or those of a few friends much more comfortable to being in a group. Although sometimes this may be mistaken for shyness, he’s not really, rather he finds large crowds overwhelming. Large is relative, considering he finds places such as school a crowd and he does his best to sit firmly at the back during classes, although ironically he does better on the occasions where the class breaks into one on one or even three on one for group projects.
When stuck in a group, Briar tries his best to stick to the outskirts and tends to come across as unwelcoming, keeping any conversations short and to the point. Although this prickliness is a self-defensive mechanism that he turns to in an attempt to hide the discomfiture he feels, it can have the side effect of turning off people from sticking around and trying to get to know the Briar under the prickly exterior.
Blunt -- Briar’s not the type to sugar coat something just to make other people feel better and nor will he flatter you. So if you ask him how do you look in an outfit then you'd better be prepared for him to tell you frankly – in all his full unvarnished opinion. This actually goes for anything you ask his opinion on. Briar honestly doesn’t see it as being mean and doesn’t understand why some people seem to get upset by some of his answers – after all why bother to ask if you really didn’t want to know the answer?
