 The night was bright.
Breathing in the crisp air, Erevu lifted his head as a breeze swept past him, ruffling his mane. He let out a sigh, crimson eyes looking up towards the large full moon hanging in the sky. Oh yes, this night was near perfect. Stars twinkles in a halo around the moon, stretching all the way to the horizon, quite content with their place on the black canvas.
Usually, Erevu chose not to stay up at this time. He would usually be asleep by now, waiting for the moment just before dawn to wake up. However, he figured that a good practice for scouting would be to venture during the night, where the more shady and suspicious type of animals lurked.
Walking along the border, he stared off into the rogue lands. One day, he was determined to venture a little bit out in the rogue lands, to visit the world beyond his own pride. He had never even stepped past the boundary.
A yawn racked his body as his ears swiveled to and fro, listening for anything like scuffling or footsteps. He was quite determined to make this a successful tonight. After tonight, he would be able to apply to become a scout. Erevu grinned excitedly.

Delphine loved the night- it seemed like the time when the rogue lands were at their best. Bright, comforting, and more than anything else, alive. Sure, a lot of lions moved around during the day, and a greater many slept at night than stayed awake through the whole thing. Still, in those few hours when the night crawlers were all up and about, the rogue lands felt more mysterious and living than they ever did in the sunlight. For her, it was where she truly enjoyed herself. Unlike most of the others, she spent almost all her time in the night- she used the dull, boring day for sleeping. So she had just woken up, ready for another night of adventure and fun. She hoped she would be able to meet someone interesting, or maybe someone challenging. There was no lion she wasn’t better than. She liked to feel confident. It wasn’t long before she spotted a male yawning nearby. Smiling, she eased her way over eagerly, offering him a smile and slight wave of her front right paw. “Looks like you’re getting sleepy,” she observed, “could it be you’re not one of the usual night walkers?” He didn’t have a dark coat suited for the night time- it seemed he would blend better with the day. Typical, really. Maybe only those with dark coats really knew what the night could mean.

Someone was heading his way. Ears twitching, Erevu turned around, crimson eyes peering into the night.
A dark coated female appeared suddenly, seeming to have come right out of the horizon. The lion blinked, momentarily dazed, before justifying the illusion. It's the color of her coat... he thought grimly, watching her carefully. He didn't dare lower his stance; why would a rogue venture to the pride lands at night? And, if she wasn't a rogue and simply from another pride, Erevu decided it would be all the more reason to suspect ill intentions.
He straightened up, frowning. He didn't know why, but he was rather irked with having been caught yawning. However, he didn't dare voice it; his nerves was beginning to jumble as he processed the creature in front of him was indeed a female. And he was never good around females.
"A-ah..." he began lamely, unsure what to say. "Night walkers?" he was very hesitant on saying it aloud. He had no idea what the term meant, unless it was taken in a literal sense.
Frowning, he raised his head higher, though his gaze was still fluttering around in a nervous habit. "What purpose do you have, skulking around in the dark around these borders?" he tried in a tone of professionalism but realized how miserably he failed; his voice cracked and there was a tinge of meekness. He was rather appalled with his resolution.
Erevu was hoping the other was here for a simple visit or something of the sorts. Even a petition in joining would be alright. However, he had to make sure, first. He couldn't allow trouble so far within his homelands. Of course, the extend of the lion's naivete extended to the point where, if someone were to simply state they had no ill intentions, he would believe it. It was simply too hard to believe someone would lie to his face. Little did he know that, as a cub, he's had plenty of little white lies sprouted in front of him; he took a lion or lioness for his or her word.

She had expected he would get her meaning, but it seemed he was too tense to take anything she had to say at face value. "You know," she said lightly, "those of us who live more at night- we are the ones who normally occupy these hours. It seems you are not used to the darkness." She didn't mean anything by it, she was just making an observation. For her, it was amusing to see those that were normally up in the sunlight trying to stay awake at night. It would probably be just as amusing to see her trying to stay awake in the daylight. But he didn't seem as amused as she was- he seemed like he was very serious about her being there. Actually, it seemed like he didn't want her there at all. "skulking?" She huffed, "that's quite rude, you know. Simply existing in the darkness does not make me a skulking creature. You should have some respect for your elders." Indeed, she was quite sure she was older than him. He seemed unsettled in his fur, like he hadn't been an adult very long. She, on the other hand, had plenty of life experience behind her. Enough to know a lion protecting his pride when she saw him. "If you must know," she told him with an air of indifference, "I wasn't even aware this was a pride until you mentioned it- I was merely here to say hello to you, and to see how you were. My name is Delphine." She watched him, tilting her head to the side. "Do you want to tell me your name?"

He felt like an utter idiot. Ducking his head bashfully, he let out a dry laugh. "Of course," he said wryly, shaking his head, before glancing up at her. He relaxed a bit; his gut was telling him she didn't mean him or his pride any harm. "No, as a matter of fact, I'm not. This is my first time patrolling past dusk, to be perfectly honest," Erevu explained. Still remaining on his guard but no longer feeling like an impending threat lurked, he eyed her, taking in her appearance. She blended very nicely into the darkness.
Inclining his head apologetically, he gave her a sheepish look. "I apologize that I've offended you. This night, I seem to be jumping at shadows," he explained wearily, eyeing her again. She did seem older, wiser; his gut clenched in disgust over his treatment. What sort of image did he give his pride if he bullied his elders and visitors?
Nodding his head, he glanced around, double checking for any other strangers lurking about. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Delphine. I am Erevu," he responded, bowing his head. "And this, here, is the Pridelands, Erevu added as an after thought.

She smiled faintly to herself. Though he was a little strange, in her eyes anyway, he seemed like he had a good heart and he wasn't someone she needed to be weary of. It was unlikely that he was going to turn around and attack her. Not that it would have been wise for him to do, even if he did seem more capable in the night. This was her home- she lived for the darkness. And she was very good at protecting herself, if the need was there. However, this time, it wasn't. So she could sit there and seem perfectly relaxed. "It's alright," she assured him smoothly, "your first night must be scary. Those who do not live in the night can be frightened by it- it happens all the time. I am not so confident in the day, as it stands, so I understand." She didn't have to make him feel bad about what had happened, so she didn't. Apologies always got her back in a good mood. "It is nice to meet you, Erevu, and it sounds like you have a very lovely pride. What do you do there?" She didn't know much about prides, but if he was trying to protect his there had to be some worth to it.

He wrinkled his nose at the word scary; sure, he was still young compared to some, but nonetheless... Instead of voicing his displeasure over the 'belittling' statement, he smiled cordially instead. She was a guest and an elder. And he was already rude enough. "I'm not use to the night," he admitted. It was the truth; he was in the habit of waking up early for training. The fact that he'll be sleeping through his usual routine... It left a weird feeling in him.
He blinked, quite unsure what she meant by the inquiry. Surely she should know the basic functions of a pride? "What isn't there to do?" he replied optimistically, smiling. "It's basically a family. Distant family, at times, since I doubt I know every single member of the pride but... one could really get comfortable," he explained simply, with a shrug, before giving her a sheepish look. "Hence my dream to be a scout. I want to... contribute something to my pride."

Delphine smiled at that. "A family?" She repeated, pleased by the word choice, "that does sound like something you might want to be a part of. I'm glad you take your home so seriously- it's good to know there are lions out there who carry responsibility so well when they aren't that old." She imagined he was a good deal younger than she was, and she was happy he already seemed to know what he was doing. So many rogue lions ran around like they had no sense of self preservation, attacking and acting smart because they didn't know where they stood. It was the kind of behavior that got a lot of young lions killed. So it seemed a pride was good for them. Taught them structure and respect, at least. "I've never been in a pride, so I apologize if my questions are a bit strange to you," she added quietly.

Erevu shrugged sheepishly, buzzing with enjoyment over the topic. He enjoyed the feeling of a family. Very much so. Nodding, he felt a bit bashful over the compliment. ”Thank you. I try my best,” he responded back, humbly. She spoke as though she had many years of experience. Erevu began to wonder just how many, but knew better than to ask such an impolite question.
Erevu quickly shook his head. The questions seemed strange? Not at all. ”They aren’t one bit strange, ma’am,” he responded back with an assuring tone, rusty eyes trained. He hesitated; perhaps he should ask questions of his own, converse a bit. ”I’ve never been outside the pride,” he admitted after a moment’s pause, before frowning, glancing at the ground a bit.
”In fact, the border is as far as I’ve gone…” Perhaps he should change that. Just to give himself a worldly view of things. Broaden his mind. Maybe. ”How are the roguelands like?” he asked, a bit hesitantly. Perhaps… perhaps he would take a travel. Take some time off to gain experience. Judging by how their meeting started off initially, Erevu well knew it was too early to even think about applying as a head scout. Way too soon.

Delphine nodded. It did not surprise her that the young male had not ventured far from his home. Why would you want to, if you had a place where you felt safe and happy? He was probably very content to stay where he was, and she did not fault him for it. Though she did like seeing some spirit for exploring in him, too. "they are cold and lonely," she replied, "an adventure every day, but there always seems to be something missing. But it is better in the evening. The stars provide some company where no one else would dare go." She smiled faintly, before offering him a bow of her head. "I should be going now. It was good speaking to you, young one. May your journeys bring you nothing but happiness, where ever they may take you." With that, she turned from the lion, making her way back the path she had come from. She would not linger around the pride too long. It might make it more appealing, and she was already set in her way of life.
