R'an was taking a break. Something he didn't do most of the time. But it seemed he wasn't needed at the moment and no one had come looking for him. Though, with how isolated he was feeling, R'an wasn't that surprised that no one was looking for him. He was an outsider in a way here. He wasn't used to the tropical climate or the people. He grew up on practically the other side of the world. He wouldn't be able to send a message to his parents for a while. Did they worry about him? What about his brother? Would he know that he had been flown to Trine for safety?

He sighed as he sat by the lake, watching people come and go, seeing some dragon's circling as they went to their private nests and seeing even some of the weyrlings and young dragon's running about. But it seemed nobody really needed his help for anything, so R'an decided to relax just for right then.

'Stop thinking so much, you're hurting my head.' Syriacuth's voice sounded in his mind. The young, dark blue was laying beside him, he felt the sleepy feelings from his dragon as the blue laid in the sun. 'Why are you thinking so much anyways? I thought you wanted to relax?' Warming himself and watching around him. R'an had finished oiling him that morning and had led the dragon out into the open so they could both relax in the sun.

R'an chuckled and rubbed the dragon's neck softly. "I'm sorry Syria, just lonely I guess. I mean I have you of course but sometimes you...well you'll get it." He chuckled as he spoke to his dragon. Syriacuth didn't seem too annoyed with the fact his rider was lonely, he was lonely as well. Yes, They had roommates that they both knew but no one was around today it seemed so it was right to be lonely. Right? Syriacuth nudged R'ans leg. 'You should find someone to talk to. I'm going to splash.' He said with a rumble that made R'an smile. 'Alright, be careful and stick to the shallows though, I don't want to have to explain to the teacher that I let my dragon drown.' R'an chuckled. The blue dragon stood up, giving R'an an eye roll and stretched before wading into the shallow part of the lake, getting his nicely oiled skin all wet and making R'an realize he would have to oil him again soon. But for now, he was content with watching Syriacuth entertain himself. 'I wouldn't drown, I'm strong!' Syriacuth said in a proud voice as he used his tail to splash water in R'an's direction, making the young man laugh as his legs got wet. 'Yes you are my friend, very strong indeed.'

Seeing as he didn't need to do anything, he pulled out his sketchbook that he carried with him usually and turned to a clean slate, starting to scratch down just what Syriacuth looked like as he played around in the water.

She walked along the edge of the lake hardly seeing where she was going. The usually neat wingleader was barefoot, dressed only in a shirt and loose britches. The shirt wasn't even tucked in. Rubbing her scarred face distractedly she tried not to think but she couldn't help it, couldn't keep her thoughts from returning to her captured comrades. D'lin, Siata and Rochelle preyed on his mind especially; D'lin was a wingleader like her so she feared what they would do to him, Siata was her friend and as a handler the wherholders would see her as a traitor, and Rochelle and Wen were barely out of weyrlinghood. That the captives were alive was all they knew, and they had no idea how long it would continue to be the case.

A dark shadow passed over R'an; Moriath was circling above her rider, worried but not knowing what to say to comfort her.

Kleos blinked, only now noticing the young man with the sketchbook whom she was nearly on top of. "Oh... good day rider." Perhaps some conversation would distract her, it was worth trying.

R'an looked up as did Syriacuth when the dark shadow passed over them. Syriacuth moving further onto shore and standing up on his hindlegs, using his wings to keep himself in that position as he looked up at the great crimson above them. 'Hello!' He called. The dragon was bigger than him and Syriacuth imagined one day he would get that big and so would Lanterneth, she would be just as pretty.

R'an had looked up from his sketchbook and was slightly shocked at seeing a rider nearly right infront of him. He looked over her and his eyes were immediately drawn to the scars on her face and neck. Was that what thread did? Or did she get into a fight?

He realized he was staring and quickly looked at her eyes instead of her scars. "Good day." He responded as he stood up, setting his sketchbook down for the moment. "I'm R'an," He introduced as he held out his hand. He glanced up at the crimson and then back at the woman. "Is that your crimson?"

Kleos was used to a bit of staring on first acquaintance by now, she would probably stare too in his position. The weyrling soon made eye contact however which was pleasing, it did become more than a little annoying if people kept gaping at her. "Yes, she is," Kleos affirmed after a moment with a slightly weak smile. "Her name is Moriath, I'm Kleos." She didn't add her title; if he didn't know she didn't really care just at the moment, she had far bigger things on her mind than that. "And Yours is...? He's a handsome little fellow."

Moriath replied magnanimously, tightening her circle and centreing it over the young dragon. He might be in her wing one day - sadly one could not make up a wing purely of female dragons - so there was no call to alienate him.

"I'm R'an and that's Syriacuth admiring your crimson." R'an said with a slightly nervous smile. Meeting a real dragonrider, especially someone who had actually faced Threadfall straight on...

He wasn't actually sure what to say. Did he just introduce himself? Wait no he did that already. Did he just talk to her? Ask her about thread? About having a crimson?

'You're distracting me from the pretty crimson.' Syriacuth's voice informed him and R'an glanced at the blue who had settled back onto his fore legs.

"Do you think Moriath would to join us? Me and Syriacuth were just finding some time to relax. You could join us as well of course." He said abit nervously.

Meanwhile Syriacuth chirped up at the crimson. 'I am doing quite well. Would you like to come down?' He asked the larger dragon. '

Well this felt a little.... She wasn't the best at smalltalk at the best of times but with her mind wrapped up with fear for the captives she found herself even less able to strike up a conversation than usual. R'an's suggestion, though it was just a small thing, at least gave her something to grab onto.

"I'm sure she would," the wingleader replied, sounding perhaps mildly relieved. Actually Moriath wasn't all that interested in landing to talk to a little male but Kleos could feel her dragon was prepared to indulge her. Hum, perhaps part of what was making her feel awkward was standing up while R'an sat. Kleos sat down too. "Congratulations," she added after a few moments. "I know it is a little belated now but... on your Impression I mean of course. Syriacuth, you are most handsome."

Moriath meanwhile began to circle down towards the little gathering; she might not be desperately keen to waste her time on a male but distraction would be good for Kleos. Maybe for both of them. she said to the young blue,

R'an smiled at that. "Thank you very much." He beamed alittle, he was very proud of his Blue who was at that moment, shaking off the water from his body. He headed back up onto the shore and sat down waiting for the other crimson to come down. He had heard the human's compliment of him and he stretched out his wings some to preen, then looked back at the other dragon, He wanted to meet her alittle closer, though he did keep his eyes on R'an and the other human, to make sure they weren't moving away or leaving.

R'an chuckled alittle at his Blue's antics before looking back at Kleos. "Sometimes I think he might be drawn to crimson's or just all females. He seems to try and get their attention more than usual." He admitted with a slight blush. "So uh..." He wasn't sure what to ask or say. So he went with the first thing that popped in his head. "How long have you been at Trine?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 02, 2013 7:28 am

"I can't say I have ever had the same issues with Moriath...." To say the least.

Well at least she wasn't the only one being a little awkward, though really she ought to be better at this kind of thing by now. Her wingsecond had a much easier way with people than she did, a relaxed sort of a manner especially for a bronze rider... and she really was not supposed to think that sort of thing, she wasn't supposed to stereotype! Well at lest it had only been in the privacy of her own head.

"Ah... well that would be about a turn and a half now," Kleos said in response to the question, giving a tight little smile. "I hailed from Malvren originally, where I had been for the six or so turns since my Search and Impression. Obviously however... well circumstances changed. My wing and I transferred here, the other Weyrs which were spared the wherholders attack are not the most welcoming to Moriath's kind.... And yourself? Were you searched recently?" She supposed he couldn't have been around very long or he would be aware of the identity of the Weyr's wingleaders... though things had been a little strange of late with the tension and fear in the air. Perhaps he had slipped through the net, as it were.

Moriath snorted in Kleos' mind at that even as she landed nearby with a heavy thump. she said, including her rider and the young blue dragon in her words. As it seemed he was coming out of the water to meet her the scarred crimson lay down on the shore and stretched her wings out before settling them comfortably by her sides. If he wanted to make conversation he would have to begin it himself.

"I've only been here a few sevendays. I was searched and taken to Benden and once it was under attack... A brave rider took a lot of us here to safety." He paused. "I actually don't know if he's okay..."

He sighed alittle at that, but thought on her words. "Why wouldn't they be welcoming to her? The more dragons the better right? Beside's she's beautiful." Having not been apart of a family who cared about politics or anything really outside of their duty, he didn't realize why a Crimson wasn't as wanted as a Green or a Gold.

Meanwhile Syriacuth moved closer but stayed a good 5 or 6 feet away from the large dragon, bowing his head in a little bit of a bow. 'Hello... ' He looked over her. 'You have scars, where did you get them?' He asked curiously. After all, this dragon was older than him, Syriacuth could learn a lot if she wanted to share.

"If you can tell me his name or his dragon's I can easily find out for you," Kleos replied with a small smile, pleased that the young man hadn't instantly forgotten somebody he owed a debt to. Honour and decency was so lacking in the world today that she truly despaired sometimes, but meeting others of good heart kept her spirits up and could raise them a little even now when she was so consumed by anxiety.

Ah, and an explanation was in order it seemed. Not everyone knew much about dragons, indeed she had known little to nothing about them until her own Search. "Trine, and formerly Malvren, are the only Weyrs on Pern that break open eggs that do not hatch alone," she began, folding her legs up into a lotus. "You saw it at your own hatching, the crimson and the silver? At any other Weyr their eggs would not have been broken, and I am sad to say that they would have died within their shells," she continued, expression and voice soft and solemn. "The argument is... partially that they are not meant to be, as they are unable to hatch without assistance. The other is their health, again I have no doubt you have observed how weak your silver and crimson clutchmates are. They will grow strong and large, the silver able to produce greater flame than any other dragon and the crimson with the option to have eggs of her own in turn. The resources needed to bring them to adulthood however are far greater than other dragons, and they remain more susceptible to injury and illness throughout their lives...."

Kleos trailed off there and looked up at her huge scarred dragon, smiling sadly and shaking her head. "For the want of more medicine, and a risk to me that she had much more chance to die in her youth than a green they would have let my Moriath die. Benden, Southern, Ista, High Reaches, Telgar, Igen... all of them. I cannot comprehend it."

Moriath meanwhile found herself pleased by the young male's polite approach. she replied with a pleased rumble. The crimson showed her teeth a little then and gave a disgusted snort.

Syriacuth tilted his head and bared his teeth at the thought of Thread. He would have to face that when he could fly and he knew he would fly with others to destroy the slimey, silver strands.

Hearing Moriath speak of the other dragons and the whers, he ducked his head some. "Why did they form the revolution?" He asked in a curious tone again. His Rider had no knowledge of the revolution so he had to find out more from a different source.

R'an tried to remember the man's name. "He was from Benden I think... I don't know who he was... He rode a brown though." He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "I don't understand why they wouldn't want to let every dragon hatch. Our world is at stake and they wouldn't take the dragons that would need more help? What if that were applied to us? If a kid has more trouble reading or too weak, would we abandon them?" He asked in an annoyed tone. Why waste good potential? If Silvers and Crimsons had better abilities, why abandon them to death?
PostPosted: Tue Jul 16, 2013 2:32 am

Moriath replied with a hiss, her eyes flickering red at the thought of the enemy.

Kleos gave a wearied sigh and shook her head. "Some people do believe that imperfect children should be allowed to die. So it is with the old Weyrs and what they name 'runt' dragons. The simply don't believe that the effort of raising them and keeping them healthy throughout their lives is worth their unique abilities." Even in explaining it she didn't understand how anyone could actually think that way. She knew some of the refugee riders from Benden looked down on her and Moriath even having met them and seen them fight Thread. "Perhaps they were just afraid of having their status quo upset... which has happened anyway, to Benden at least."

He shook his head at the stupidity of it all. Yes, he had seen certain beasts abandon the offspring that they felt wouldn't make it, but that was where humans came in to help. And sometimes those beasts died and other times they became stronger than the rest.

With a sigh, he looked at Syriacuth. "Honestly, that sounds so stupid to me. They should always be allowed to live. Sometimes the runt of the family can be the one to survive despite all odds."

Shrugging, R'an ran a hand through his hair, since it was down today, it shifted aside easily under his fingertips. "The only drawback I can see to letting the other dragons survive would be more Weyrs, but that seems to be a good thing with Thread falling all over the place now. Right?"

Meanwhile Syriacuth laid down infront of Moriath, listening to her intently. 'They should just concentrate on the bigger evil. Fighting the Thread. Why upset things when our biggest enemy doesn't care who it kills?' He had certain memories from R'an of what Thread was and why Syriacuth would fight it and he didn't want to waste time on fighting against his own kind and Whers when their time and energy needed to be reseved for the bigger fight.

"Well not exactly," Kleos said slowly, slowly because she was thinking hard about it. Politics was not really her forte. "You see, each Weyr guards an established territory and they gather tithes from that area to sustain themselves. A new Weyr would require the division of territory which would be tricky, or resettling people which would also be problematic. With the nuber of atypes that exist however I don't believe that it would tip the old Weyrs over into overpopulation, we're tight packed here at Trine only because a fair number of refugees from both Benden and Malvren moved here." Sighing slightly then Kleos shook her head. "But you are right, I agree completely. I cannot understand why, knowing that viable dragons often lie within eggs that don't hatch, people wouldn't try to help them. Healers attend a difficult birth, I fail to see how this is any different."

Moriath snorted and flicked the tip of her tail. Honestly Moriath didn't see the issue with how things were run, it wasn't entirely fair and she knew that but it all worked and had done since time remembered. The only sensible big change she knew of in how things were done was when Trine and Malvren had begun to bread eggs that contained dragons like her.

"Oh." He said simply, unsure about all of this. He wasn't good with Politics either and it just seemed like the world was going nuts to him. But he was young, he figured someday he'd figure it out someday?

"You're right. Even if I hadn't gotten Syriacuth, I would have been happy with a black, a white, silver or crimson. Though I wonder if they would have caused the stir he did at the hatching..." He winced alittle at the memory of his dragon's hatching and how he attacked everyone around R'an before impressing him. 'I had to make sure, you were the one who got my attention.' Syriacuth's voice sounded in R'an's head making the boy chuckle, he had gotten the dragonets attention on purpose. 'You were going to kill you're siblings I was worried.' He responded. 'They were too close, they needed to be pushed back.'

"Were you there? I don't happen to remember, it kind of went too fast and he was a big distraction for me." R'an's eyes trailed over to Syriacuth who was now looking at them.

Syriacuth snorted as well. 'I think I understand.' He said as he looked over at R'an and Moriath's rider before looking back to the large red dragon. Something from R'an's mind made Syriacuth pause. 'If we go by the way that the other weyrs want, would I be... higher than you?' He paused, if he had been a human, he would have been biting his lip. 'More respected than you?' Of course Syriacuth respected all females, they were higher than him on any list and he would what he could for them. Especially Lanterneth since she was his sibling and he still remembered that.
