(( He's not there. . . or over there. I wonder how many girls it's possible bang in one night...
MEANWHILE SHESKA KOs. )) It was a bitter, cold day. The air was so dry that the water in the cold, gusty wind blowing from the ocean cut muzzles and frayed hair.
It was hard to touch another without sending a shower of sparks between them. Whatever might have been rumored about Freyja and Sheska, the grey lioness had no interest in these sparks. She had banished Sheska a few feet away to the inside of the cave.
No touching.
Freyja seemed content with the battering wind, outside on the rocky precipice that gave her the largest view from their small cavern. The wind was as merciless as the chap beginning on the soft, black skin that rested against her teeth.
Though her face seemed clear, neutral, with brows set naturally on her head, it would be clear from looking at her there was a darkness in her eyes. A more astute lion would notice it in the slight backwards turn of her ears--ears which did not sway gently when she moved her head but remained frigid; the thump, thump of her tail which was too rhythmic to be natural.
Freyja was counting. She'd been counting all morning, and for once even Sheska's pretty face would not alter her foul mood.

Calling Sheska's face "pretty" was distortion of fact. She was gorgeous, thank you. Freyja could have matched her grace if only she'd allowed a good grooming or two. The weather and the winds were both enemies of beauty indeed.
As was Kondo, Sheska decided.
It was strange to her how idle hours suddenly seemed only a fleeting moment when at last the thing -- the lion -- you were waiting for arrived. She hoisted herself to all fours and marveled at the sight.
What kind of scandal was this?
Predictably, Kondo was at odds with himself. On one hand, every Viking lost a squabble or two; on the other, those lions weren't him. Freyja didn't know it and might have disagreed if she'd been made wise to it, but his absence the night and day before had been a blessing in disguise. He had time to take his frustrations out on thralls rather than his wife or her pet.
In a true Kondo fashion, so very pompous, he did not enter the den but rather loitered outside it and waited for her to find time in her busy schedule of doing absolutely nothing to come outside.
This was everything Meshindi wanted, to have his father as a captain and his dearest friend both literally and figuratively at his side. Why couldn't he find any joy in it? He looked askance at Gepeto more out of habit than any real intent to pass along his thoughts. How could he when he didn't know what to think himself?
Kondo had told them they were to go out on their first raid immediately, then brought them here for reasons he evidently didn't feel necessary to explain.
To say the least, it surprised Meshindi those reasons were two females.

He hid no emotion, not from Meshindi nor himself and while he did not exchange a similarly routine look toward his comrade-- the dark male would certainly notice the deepened scowl and sight the irritable whip of his tail to and fro. This was what Meshindi wanted, but it made Gepeto no less content knowing that. Still, the thought of prides and their rules remained in the back of his mind. These were said to be lions who walked to a different drum, but he would be the final judge of that. Kondo had intentions of sending them out to raid, and that seemed to interest him. Yet they continued along the territory, reasons unknown to either of the newly joined members, until they found themselves in the company of two females. Only then did Gepeto shift his glance to Meshindi. The ********>?

There was no mistaking those cheek bones.
For once, even Freyja's face could not hide the swelling of emotion the males had brought. Those cheek bones. Though she had not seen him in years, and he had, for all intents and purposes, come to look like what you would call a man, the black male had his mother's softness to her face.
Freyja's eyes were icy when they landed on Kondo. There had to be a reason for this.
Not hesitating, Freyja easily pulled to all fours and swept from the den. Gepeto was not even glanced at, a figment of an imagination, assumed to be an unimportant pawn in Kondo's life and therefore Freyja's. She was v-lining for Meshindi, to look him straight in the eye and see if reality wavered.
It did not.
Freyja had fractions of seconds to decide how she was going to manage this information. Kondo's son. Her sister's son. Technically of blood relation, but it had been no secret to anyone that he had been a failure. Well, perhaps a secret to his mother who lie in the ground.
"Welcome home," she finally decided.Hopefolly (( I am a dirty rotten liar and I did /not/ respond from my phone. I sorely neglected to take into consideration that there might not have been a wait for my appointment. LOL. I was pretty damn sure Freyja would have at least seen Meshindi around, but I can change if I am incorrect in this assumption! ))

Reality didn't waver because it allowed Meshindi to do the honors. The lion's taut shoulders strained to stay upright beneath the kempt mane. They fared better than his fluctuating gaze, eyes that alternated between Freyja and the left of her -- though he couldn't have recalled what was happening over there to save his life.
Everyone was watching him.
The feeling of dread crippled his ability to breathe, let alone speak. "Welcome home," she'd said, and that was when Meshindi realized he knew her: his aunt whose name wouldn't manifest on his tongue.
"Freyja," Kondo offered.
Meshindi looked to his father in blessed relief. But upon closer inspection, he recognized these actions as lack of manners, not bestowed mercy. He was simply being talked over. Ignored. Rendered insignificant.
Correction: Everyone but the captain had been watching.
"We're going out," Kondo continued. "I just came to tell you so you don't use my sudden absence as an excuse to act like someone's whore, tempting as that is for you. I'll find a mate for your servant while I'm gone."
Even Sheska, a thrall, was spared more consideration than his son. The lioness smiled kindly in the name of self-preservation and chose not to inform him that, in her opinion, she had a mate. Someone Kondo had just branded a harlot in front of their guests.

The interest that had been generated reached its peak when Kondo ran off his mouth, rattling on about whores and mates and the like. Why he had been brought to the reunion was beyond him, although that quip certainly got a rise out of the large brown lion-- if only briefly. And another question was posed as to why the viking felt the need to inform the lioness(') of his departure, although this was quickly justified by the loss of a duel Kondo had encountered only a short while ago. Meshindi had impressed upon him the captains brutality in all aspects of life-- but apparently, some things change. He met with a match he could not beat, and perhaps he found a similar disadvantage in the females. He showed little interest in the exchanges soon after and, as was in his nature, became increasingly annoyed with the wait.

"Out?" Freyja repeated the word, her voice snapping of its tip. Of the questionability of her morality, the lioness seemed not to respond. Even if no act had been committed, the pink slave's face had often been an escape into fantasy--one where Freyja toyed with ideas of all the things Kondo must have done in her absence, and when she was feeling sweet, his home life with his now dead wife.
It seemed that Gepeto, in all his agitation was suddenly noticed.
"When he has blistering wounds?" The lionesses distaste rumbled briefly in her throat, though it was directed at no lion in particular.
"Reavers have died of infection from less." This time, the lioness turned her gaze from its predominant focus on the son and his 'friend' to Kondo. He could challenge her if he wished. If something were to happen, Freyja would release the same swarm of I told you sos that Kondo would provide her on returning with a Reaver in perfect health.

"When he has blistering wounds? Reavers have died of infection from less."
That was true. But from the mouth of his harridan wife it meant nothing. All the captain heard was the sound of her voice, an affront to the king of this den in and of itself. She should have bowed her head and thanked him for wasting his time, not mouthed off in the presence of other males.
"He could fall ill while we're gone," Kondo agreed. Not a good sign. The amendable tone did nothing but foreshadow something wicked. "But my reavers always make it back, sick or not. So."
Meshindi remembered hearing that himself.
So.
Sheska held her breath and choked on it after what Kondo said next, this time to her: "You'll wait by the borders for us to return, then when we do, you'll run to fetch a healer. And you won't move until then. Not an inch."
A thrall hovering by the border? How would she even get there without being accused of trying to escape?

It was easier to let the females words, and even Kondo's, fall on deaf ears then to acknowledge them. Gepeto would endure, as was the way of Firekin blood. He had nothing to prove in front of the company he unwilling kept-- no more or less than he had already provided, but Meshindi did. And perhaps it was only that fact which kept his tongue held. " Get on with it already..." Were the only words he could not quite swallow, sights passing over Freyja, her purple companion, and even Meshindi only to settle on their captain. So.
Freyja could hear the entire list of reasonings. They rattled off in her brain as unvocalized ramblings and the lioness' muzzle clamped shut. The damage, however, had already been done.
There was no room for rebuttal without risking further offense, and so the lioness tongue remained pressed against the roof of her mouth. She refused to look at either Kondo or Sheska, though her mind was already picking through how to deal with the problem.
"Be carful, Meshindi."
And, because of Gepeto's presence, she added. "May your claws strike like iron," for Kondo.

If Kondo had heard Gepeto -- and one could assume he had -- he didn't acknowledge his impatience, for better or worse. The same could not be said of his son, who nudged the offender in the side and insisted, "Just be quiet for a minute, alright?"
"They'll kill me if they see me out there," a female voice protested.
Oh, Sheska. She had a far different upbringing than that of Freyja. Lionesses ruled the roost and the pretty ones like her had more say than anyone. Old habits die hard, but not as violently as she would if they suspected her of trying to pull one over on them.
She hadn't yet learned that what was right here was just as dangerous, if not more so, than what was out there.
Kondo did not strike her, undoubtedly to the surprise of his wife. He turned to his to-be Reavers, focusing on Gepeto. He nodded over his shoulder toward Sheska. "Sound like this one with all your whining."

For a rather long, drawn out moment Gepeto gave the Captain a hard stare. It would be difficult to decipher his thought process, as the dull look gave no way of knowing for sure. However! It could be assumed that the lion took the Captain's words in strides, but had no intention of letting them be the last. Meshindi's careful warning went without regards, although the nudge seemed to stagger his breath momentarily. With a curl of his lips the male sneered, "Are we finished here?" Stepping back the way they had come through. "Have you warned them enough?" And to Kondo's female companion, "Satisfied?"

Satisfied.
Hardly. Freyja's tongue pressed harshly into the roof of her mouth, and she blinked over at Gepeto as though suddenly realizing he was more than a pawn.
"I am, thank you," she spoke instead. "I won't keep you any longer."
Inwardly, she was pointing claws towards the big, brown male. Arrogant, impatient, headstrong. It was a wonder the Viking's were not slaughtered with their lack of observation and stubborn gall.
Since they seemed incapable of walking away themselves unless she did her wife's duty and relieved them of responsibility, Freyja turned from them. The lioness pattered by Sheska, narrowing her eyes at the lioness as she did so. Anymore stupid outburts from her, and it wouldn't be Kondo's claws she'd be facing.
"I'll accompany you to the border," Freyja muttered as she passed, slipping back into the dry air of Kondo's cavern.

Due in part to his second wife's malcontent, Kondo was satisfied. With her retreat, with her words, sounding as if she'd kept them waiting when it had been he who approached her. He would wander to her when he wanted to and she would leave when he was done. This was true for more than conversation and the way his gaze stayed on her smaller frame as she and Sheska regressed into the den suggested to the watchful eyes of a certain nearby snake that it would be more than words he'd seek upon his return.
Meshindi turned and followed his father. He could hear the hushed voices of the females behind him and did his best to ignore them. It wasn't lost on him what had just happened and it hit him this was the least of his concerns.
Bloodshed was soon to be had.

He turned his back to the lioness', following after Kondo and beside Meshindi without hesitation. Unlike his companion who kept one ear behind him, Gepeto heard nothing. The two who quietly conversed now paces at their rears could have never existed with the way he completely zoned them out.
That day would not be remembered for its brief encounter with Kondo's 'mate's, if they could be called such, (not the brightest bulb in the box, Gepeto) but for the events to come. Finally, a hint of excitement began to well up within him, hidden securely by the stone face he bore.
(Done!)
