Yei Umeko, matriarch of one of the oldest herds on the slopes, wasn't often seen in the lowlands nowadays. She spent much of her time catering to the ever expanding family that she had created and as a consequence, her presence and influence had been lost. It was a shame on certain occasions, but it provided many more benefits to not be recognised most of the time. She no longer ended up surrounded by young and inquisitive creatures and she wasn't often bombarded with inane questions - not that she minded giving a lesson here and there but sometimes she did have to wonder.
Nevertheless she had caught wind of some rather intriguing rumours in her ear and they just had to be investigated. You see, for the longest time her youngest daughter had been oblivious to what existed beyond the boundaries of her home. She had never queried what lay beyond and had led such a sheltered life that she couldn't fathom the dangers that existed outside the protection of her relatives. So one could only begin to imagine the surprise when one day she had announced, rather unceremoniously, that she had her eye on someone.
He wasn't even a neighbour.
Suffice it to say that the red mare had been fascinated and having grilled her daughter for a considerable amount of time, she had soon concluded that he was most likely in the lowlands, probably in the meadows and this was why she, and her somewhat naive daughter, found themselves so far from home.
It had proved to be an educational experience for them both - Yei stopping to admire the new territories while her daughter queried every little thing. As of yet, they hadn't found this fabled stallion, but Yei was confident... She had a spectacular track record for matchmaking and if her daughter wanted this stallion then she would get him. Well, provided he met all the rigorous standards imposed on him by Grencia in order to protect his youngest child.
Frankly, he might as well just shackle Tranquility to a tree the way he behaved sometimes.
If he was human, he probably would have come out wielding a gun at anyone that so much as tried to take her away!

Aishwarya took a deep breath, breathing in the summery scent, sun dried grass and drifting pollen. The sun was warm on her back, and she swished her head, moving her neck so that her hair slipped and the heat underneath managed to escape for a moment.
She did like her hair, or at least appreciated its length and colour but it could be a pain sometimes. It tangled, and it was heavy in the summer but she appreciated it in the winter when she wrapped herself in it like a scarf. But on a day like today..well, she'd just have to bear it.
Like the heaviness of her belly. But that was born with pride and happiness, though not a little nervousness. It had been several years since she had carried Nivriti and Nituna, and Nivriti had become a mother three times over, far eclipsing her in motherly duties. She didn't want to talk to Nivriti about her jitters though, as it seemed somehow jarring for her to be asking her daughter for advice!
And she didn't want to bother Vespasian as she was a slightly old-fashioned mare, and didn't feel it proper to discuss labour pains with her mate. What she needed was a mare around her own age, but she'd fallen out of touch with her old friends. Well, she would just have to wing it, and hope it came back to her when the time came.
She tugged at some grass, wincing a little as the kicking started again. Apart from anything, she was sure she was heavier than last time. Did that mean more than two foals this time? Questions, questions. She quietly carried on grazing, whilst her unborn foals continued to act like they were running around in her womb.

She'd always had a knack for showing up when she was needed - it wasn't that she was ever called anywhere, she just appeared. Today was to be another one of those days as both she and Tranquility made their way into the meadow.
Her daughter was unsurprisingly beginning to flag, her stamina and fitness largely open for debate. Suffice it to say that Tranquility was extremely spoiled and as a consequence she hadn't needed to develop the same level of fitness as everyone else...alas, this was something that Yei would see corrected. Yei on the other hand was making ample progress as she strode across the expanse, her gaze set firmly on the horizon for any signs of the fabled stallion.
...As of yet, she'd seen nothing.
Alas there was nothing else for it and with a small sigh she cast her gaze about her for some other lead. No sooner had she done so, than her gaze settled on Aishwarya and she gave a delighted smile. She could ask for directions! Although now that she thought about it that mare looked frightfully familiar - interesting.
"Good moooorning!" she announced in a rather flamboyant manner, her smile lighting up her features as she approached the mare. "You wouldn't happen to be local to this area, would you?"

Aishwarya was just silently pleading with her foals to stop kicking her so hard when the two mares approached. Whilst one had wings, there was a definate resemblance between the two and she was sure they had to be related.
Her heavy belly forgotten for a moment, she answered the older mare's question with a nod and a reply.
'Good morning to you too. Yes, I don't live too far from here. Not been venturing too far lately.' she said, smiling in a manner that was meant to be serene, before one of her unborn gave a hefty kick and the smile turned to a wince.
'Are you looking for somewhere in particular?' she asked, attempting to take her mind off her pregnancy with a bit of conversation.

Yei couldn't help but let out a loud burble of laughter at Aishwarya's wince - she knew all too well what that meant. Nevertheless the mare did have a measure of sympathy in her eyes for the purple female. She was expecting and soon by the looks of it, more amusingly, it would appear that she would have her hooves full when they arrived as well. The energy already present in her belly would be somewhat worse (and a damn sight more interesting) when the gangly legged children entered the world.
Alas, now wasn't the time to gossip, though the elder did hold an appreciative twinkle in her eye.
She waited until her daughter had caught up and then returned to the topic at hand, momentarily dismissing the mild 'wheezing' her youngest child was doing. Her fitness levels left much to be desired, it was something she was going to have to address! Still, Tranquility did eventually recover and it was with a smile that she turned her attention back to Aishwarya.
"Someone rather than somewhere," she replied at last and motioned to her daughter with a nod of her head. "Specifically my daughter's beau -"
"He's not my beau," Lily corrected, though a shadow of a smile did line her features as she regarded her mother.
"Soon-to-be-beau," Yei corrected herself in a dismissive voice and cleared her throat. "When a mare picks her stallion, it's really only a matter of time before he caves," she pointed out before gazing at Aishwarya. "We were hoping you would have -"
"Are you related to someone called Nivriti?" Lily blurted out, interrupting her mother as she stared at Aishwarya, her gaze flicking towards her hindquarters. "She has a marking just like that one..." she mused before smiling apologetically at her mother who looked somewhat bemused at the interruption...though now that her daughter had mentioned Nivriti she was regarding Aishwarya with renewed curiosity...

'Feels like they are running a race in there.' Aishwarya said, giving the younger mare a concerned look, her ears having caught the slightly heavy breathing. She seemed to recover, and so she attended herself to the conversation.
She chuckled at the back and forth over the beau..supposed beau and then nodded. 'Well, when you're as pretty as your daughter, it's only a matter of time, I agree. I can't imagine the stallion in question resisting such charms.'
'Oh you know my Nivriti?' Aishwarya smiled at the thought of her daughter, though it had been a little while since they'd last met up, though she understood as Nivriti had become a mother for the third time in the past few months. They would catch up soon she had no doubt.
'My eldest daughter from my first relationship. Forgive me, but you do look familiar, but from description only.' she nodded, addressing Yei. 'You would be Althalus's mother?'
Aishwarya wasn't completely sure, but there was enough of a resemblance to what she remembered from all that Nivriti had said to make her believe she wasn't making a stab in the dark.

Yei's eyes creased as she smiled, nodding in response to Aishwarya's query. So Tranquillity did have a good eye; Yei was grateful for that, as it would prove very useful as she grew older. On the other hand, she couldn't help but conclude that this world was a rather small one given that she had just bumped into a relative. Fancy that!
"I am Althalus's mother, yes," she replied with a small chuckle and motioned to Lilli, "And obviously this is his youngest sister," she continued. "Suffice it to say that your daughter has made herself very comfortable among us, we haven't had the pleasure of meeting many of her relatives!" she tilted her head to the side and regarded Aishwarya with an increasingly warm smile - so the children now huddled in her belly were to be family members as well.
"It is a pleasure to meet you at last, as you know I'm Yei and this is my daughter Lilli," she concluded.
In response, Lilli lifted a wing and provided Aishwarya with a delicate wave, a smile lining her own lips as she lapsed into silence.
"Althalus is one of my eldest sons, from my..." she paused, furrowed her brow and double-checked her facts in her head. "First bunch, he was born alongside Adarna, Ambroise and Killian."

'Well I am very pleased to meet you both.' Aishwarya said, her face lighting up, and her pregnancy pains forgotten for the moment.
'And I am appreciative of you being so welcoming to her, I know that she has certainly flourished in the love of Althalus and your family, and she has certainly not been slow to make new additions.' she chuckled.
'Likewise, and I am Aishwarya.' she replied, although it was likely known, she gave her name anyway, dipping her head a little and then shaking her mane away as she raised it back up once again.
'You have many children then?' she asked, hopeful that the response would be in the affirmative. Here it seemed would be an opportunity to talk to a mare who knew what she was going through.

Yei had always had a rough idea of what Aishwarya's name was, but it had never come up in conversation enough for her to be certain of it. Thus to have it confirmed was exactly what she needed to be confident to bring it up in conversation! Rather than saying 'your mother', she would be able to say, 'Aishwarya' and then she could watch the awkwardness of the reactions her daughter-in-law and son might have.
Ooooh no, the in-laws had met!
Nevertheless when she asked how many children that the red mare had, she couldn't help but give a hearty chuckle. Tranquillity even had the decency to look sheepish, perhaps a touch embarrassed by her mother's activities. It should have come at no surprise that Yei cast an impish grin towards her daughter...
"Ooooh Lilli, how many brothers and sisters do you have?" she cooed innocently.
"Loads," Lilli replied, unwilling to elaborate on the activities of her mother and father!
"I have fourteen children in total, though two are adopted." Yei clarified.

Aishwarya laughed outload a little at was clearly a display of discomfort by the daughter at the thought of Yei and her mate being..active with one another. Children really never did like to think of their parents doing anything that led to babies.
'So you've birthed twelve children in total?' she asked, her estimation of the mare going up at that thought. Aishwarya had so far only had her two daughters, though she was still suspecting that the number would be raised by three when her current pregnancy reached its inevitable conclusion.
'If I may say, you don't look old enough to be mother to so many.' she added, looking to pave the way towards asking Yei for guidance with a genuinely meant compliment. The mare really didn't look as though she were old enough to have had so many children.

Tranquility had always been the more 'prudish' of the children, predominantly due to her sheltered childhood and the fact that she hadn't be exposed to the antics of her older brothers. While Fenghuang and co would have made it their goal to corrupt her, or at least remove some aspect of that innocence, Ambroise had always been firm and to the book, as such, she couldn't quite get her head around the fact that her mother and father had to copulate in order to produce her and her siblings...suffice it to say that she would have been somewhat ill if she discovered they were still 'active'!
Ah, but Lilli was fortunate in the sense that Aishwarya's attention was on her mother and the sheer size of her family. Lilli had been so accustomed to its size that she thought nothing of it, but according to Aishwarya it was most unusual. Alas, Yei's laughter cut through any 'tension' that might have existed, a response to the compliment that Aishwarya had bestowed upon her.
Young indeed!
"That would be correct," Yei replied with a small chuckle, recovering her composure as she regarded the mare curiously. "A batch of four every two or three years," she confirmed and then raised her eyes heavenwards. There was a brief moment of silence and then the warm smile returned to her lips. "That isn't to say that I was ever sure I would be able to have them at the start, it seemed I was barren for so very long... But the spirits had other ideas," she mused softly.
"I suppose in that respect, a good and healthy lifestyle keep me fit, healthy and younger than my years, no?" She finished with a wink, gracefully accepting the compliment regardless of how silly it might have been.

'Goodness. Well, if anyone could be called an expert on pregnancy and giving birth, then I would imagine it would be yourself.' Aishwarya said, unsure as to how she would have coped with that many foals.
'Well, it would seem they did, and possibly even making up for the lost time. I myself..well, these will only be my second lot of children, and it seems so long since I had Nivriti and Nituna that I've quite forgotten how uncomfortable a time it is!' she laughed at herself.
'And currently stress is making me feel older than my years..or younger and panicking about being a mother again, I sort of go back and forth between the two states of mind.' she let out a little sigh.
'I do feel foolish that I'm feeling like this.'
