Brightly coloured paws flecked with dirt. A breeze softly blowing with a surprisingly cold bite. The long, thin blades of straw-coloured grass tickled at Morana's belly. She couldn't help but giggle to herself. This was a nice place she had stumbled upon, a large open field, the beginnings of a forest nearby, tall snow-capped mountains in the distance. The sky was grey, yes, but the world below the clouds wasn't shadowy. It was just right.
A small shiver went down her spine. Someone must be walking over her grave~
Inhale. Exhale. She had been spending more and more time on her own lately. Trying to see the world, spend time as herself. She wondered how her 'daeva friend would respond to that? With sarcasm, no doubt, but undertones of happiness. Yes, deep within her friend would be pleased she was developing her own personality. Morana was pleased too. Since she was a kit, she had always tried to please everyone. Her heart was so full of caring for others there was no room for her to care about herself. She was a mirror...once. A thousand masks, a thousand different Moranas, for a thousand foxes. None of them the real her. So when she had stumbled upon her friend, and found there was nothing to reflect off...she had found her true self had all but vanished under layers and layers of lies. She didn't know who she was anymore.
Hence, she had slowly begun caring more about herself. Developing her own ideas, finding out what she really liked and disliked, and doing things for herself- not others. Still...all this time in solitude, it was lonely. She ached for company, yet was afraid that if she came across anyone, she would revert back to old habits...No. She couldn't think like that. What was the use of developing your own personality, only to have it crumble so easily. No. She had worked hard, she would keep working hard, and no amount of peer-pressure or anything would keep her from being herself.
Now was the time to test out how much stronger she had grown as an individual. She needed to find someone, and prove to herself that these efforts were not in vain.
Yes. She nodded to herself, a fierce determination in her eyes. She could still be kind and empathetic, while still being herself. Yeah!

A small cloud of dust whipped up into the air as blue paws dashed across the dry dirt floor of the forest. His frustration drove him onward faster. The joke was on them really. They needed him, they just didn't realize it. Without him, they probably wouldn't even survive. But that wasn't his concern anymore. No, now they were on their own and it was their own faults. Acting like their all grown up and capable of handling themselves in the wilds. Ha. He wouldn't be surprised at all of one of them falls off a ledge and hurts themselves and doesn't know how to tend to it. Or fall out of a tree. Or if get caught in a river. Or stumble across a pack of wolves. Or a bear. Or a 'Daeva. Rainir pushed himself faster, dodging low limbs and bushes, hopping over roots and fallen branches. He didn't want to think about all the horrible things that could be happening to his younger siblings right now. They had told him to leave, that they needed space to grow up. He was the only thing protecting them from the world and now they had pushed him away. They didn't even ask him to back off. No, just to leave. Finally, Rainir shot out of the forest and into the field that stretched out beyond it. His pace slowed until he finally collapsed on the dying grass. He forced himself to stay together. There was no way he was going to cry or anything else as silly. If they didn't need him, he knew he didn't need them. So, I'll just forget about them. He thought. I'll make a new life for myself and only care about me.

Ears twitched, picking up a new sound. What...what was that? A fox? Running for it's life? Eep! What if it was a bear or something? What if it was a fox being chased...or something charging at her!? Alarm bells went off in her head as she searched for the sound of the noise. Heart beat quickening.
She tensed when she saw it was indeed a fox running at full speed...but nothing seemed to be chasing him. She even let out a sigh of relief when she realized that, along with the fact that he didn't seem to after her. It-it wasn't like she had been scared or anything... She knew better than that. Even the so-called nasty 'deavas could be friendly form time to time. Ugh, she needed to stop being to paranoid.
Morana was so wrapped up in her own thoughts she hadn't noticed the fox collapse. Her eyes quickly scanned the area, where could he have gone? Where was he? ...Ah! There he was! Bright colours of his fur standing out against the cream grass. Uh...was he okay?
Tentatively she padded up to the male. They both had surprisingly similar coloured fur...maybe they were related? Nah, on a closer inspection she could see that the actual patterns were different. So...did he need help? He looked...upset. Not to mention exhausted. "Uh...are you okay, mister?" She gently chimed. No physical wounds...not that she could see anyway. "Do you need help or something...?" She leaned closer to get a better look at him.

From the time they were born he had been watching out for them, been there for them through thick and thin, and now he had been pushed aside. Banished almost. Cast aside. All the love and care he had given to them over the years didn't matter.
Rainir choked down a sob. He would not cry, no matter what the situation was.
He had raised his brother and sisters not to far from the forest he had sprinted through, about a two days trip. As a family, they had traveled to this particular field on a few occasions as a vacation from home. He had thought it was a safe place to run to to be alone. The field had always been abandoned and free of any other foxes scent so it came as a great surprise to Rainir when he heard the voice of another fox.
His head snapped up and his light eyes locked onto the face of a vixen he had never seen before. A small part of him wanted to snap at her for being in his field, for intruding on his crisis. Of course he wasn't going to though. From the way she was looking at him and had spoken to him, it was clear that she was a gentle soul who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Or maybe it wasn't wrong. Maybe she could actually help him. Direct him to a tribe or a really great get away spot perhaps.
"...You shouldn't sneak up on foxes you don't know. You could get hurt." He said finally with a sigh and looked away from her. Though he didn't want to ignore her, he really didn't want to answer her questions. No, he was not okay. No, he didn't need help or anything. But he didn't want to drag some unknown vixen into his family drama and he also didn't have the energy to lie to her and say he was fine. So instead he just chose the easiest way out and that was ignoring the questions.

He was clearly distressed. Seeing others feeling upset always made Morana upset herself. Her chest squeezed slightly, she was determined to help out, in any way she could. Okay, not any way. It was that kind of thinking that led to her problems from times past. How about any way she felt comfortable with? Yeah, okay.
Her ears flicked backwards and down a little. "Oh..o-okay. I just thought you looked really upset and..." She trailed off into mumbling, finishing with a timid apology that the male may or may not really hear.
He didn't want to talk, that much was clear. But...she had to try, right? Talking always helped you feel better, even just as a distraction from what was troubling you. "I'm Morana. What brings you here? Oh...uh...you don't have to answer that if you don't want to...um...What's your name?" She smiled sweetly half at the male, and half at her own social clumsiness. Social clumsiness when she was trying to be herself. Yes, that was a trait that belonged to her, and she cherished it despite the awkwardness it brought.

Rainir mentally kicked himself. His family just deserted him and this vixen was kind enough to show some concern for his well being and he was being rude to her. It didn't matter how upset he was, that was no excuse to be so rude to anyone. He would not let this effect him so much. He was better than that. Yeah...Right...
He looked up to her as her words became a low mumble that he didn't quite understand. He offered up his best smile, which wasn't much considering, but it was a smile none the less. A part of him wanted to scold her for mumbling but he held off. His family had just gotten rid of him for being to bossy didn't they?
"It's a pleasure to meet you Morana. I'm Rainir." He sat up so that Morana wouldn't have to look down at him. "I'm here because...." His voice trailed off and he looked back in the direction he had run from. "...I'm here to get away from everywhere else I guess."
After a pause, he sighed and looked back to her. "And you? What brings you here? I've roamed this field before and there's never been any sign of claimed territory." It wasn't an accusation, more of just a statement really.
