Today he was in the Malro for personal growth, actually looking for a fight for once. Ainsley, who had a long talk with Quan after the man threw him into the desert without any idea of what he would find in there, and his mentor said that he noticed something about Ainsley that he found interesting. The boy - and he defended himself by saying that it started way back when he encountered his first dragon and was years younger than his current age - never purposefully sought out dragons to become stronger. They always seemed to find him, and when pressed for an answer as to why this was, Ainsley couldn't give one.
"It's just how it happens," was all he could say. Now, his mentor didn't say whether this was a good or bad thing; he merely brought it up as an observation, but he also shared with the blonde a story about another barbarian from his youth. Now that barbarian was someone who truly admired strength and purposefully sought it out. He didn't treat it as a sport, but he saw each encounter as an opportunity to learn and become stronger. Add on to his knowledge and experience. Ainsley went to bed with all of these thoughts, and upon waking he excused himself and took a short trip to Eowyn.
So there he was, wandering through the Malro once again. No dragons came into view, at least not for the first hour, but soon enough he caught sight of a shadow coming over to him from a good distance away. He didn't even need to think about it, his hand just went straight for his axe. The Kiandri landed, giving a frightful roar as it stared down the teenaged Orderite. It took all of a second for the Kiandri to send a bolt of lightning straight at Ainsley, who dodged it just in time before he quickly ran toward the dragon. With each blast of electricity Ainsley moved closer and closer to the beast, eyes narrowed and determined.
He didn't want to get stronger by accident; each encounter had to be on purpose, not by chance. Every encounter from this point on would matter - no more running, no more surprises if he could help it.
With a battle cry the teen jumped and hacked down at the foot of the dragon, cutting a toe clean off and, of course, pissing off the large beast as he lifted up its leg and let out a roar in pain and irritation. As a simple reaction it smacked Ainsley off to the side, and he landed roughly in the sand. Minor cuts were taken, but the teen quickly recovered and once again ran toward the dragon. Electricity crackled with each blast the dragon gave off, and every time Ainsley was barely dodging the attacks. When he got close enough the dragon lifted itself up off the ground, so he jumped up and barely managed to grab hold of its back leg. The dragon shot up into the sky, bringing the Orderite along with it, roaring and rolling and twisting to get the unwanted passenger off.
Ainsley did his best to hold on, barely succeeding. When he managed to climb atop the dragon's neck, with one swift motion he slashed his axe downward onto the dragon's head. Another wail came from the creature as it began to fall down toward the ground. Ainsley could only hold on at that point, and as soon as they landed Ainsley was sent flying off in a different direction. Much like the Ysali that he'd taken down in a similar fashion, the impact did most of his job for him, neatly leaving an orb in the dragon's place. He picked it up and tucked it away for safekeeping, then hurried back out of the desert and toward the town he'd docked in.
Today's encounter, at least, was definitely no accident.
