Adam panted and doubled over in pain. He wasn't hurt, but he was exhausted. He had run away from the office with all of his might and his legs weren't used to such work. His legs were made for walking around offices, jumping over fences, and sitting for long periods of time. When he caught his breath, he headed forward again.

It was quiet out here. Adam figured the monsters must've been attracted to places with more people for them to feast on. A lone man was probably too much work for the reward it entailed. He sighed wistfully. Even when things went well, he felt terrible. Why couldn't he just enjoy that it was nice and quiet? Why did there have to be all this emotional baggage with it?
It was still quiet. The quietude gave Adam time to think. He wondered what happened to everyone else. Was anyone in team mermaid still alive? Was Fluffy okay? What about that fu dog? The last time he saw him was back at Curiosity Coast before the whole building came crashing down. He sighed again. These were all depressing thoughts.

Adam was almost halfway to the helipad without incident. He actually let himself smile. But it was a bittersweet smile. Things really were going well, so far. But so much had gone terribly.
Adam threw his hands up at his sides and yelled. "Holy crap! Speak of the devil!" A fu dog had appeared before him. Then, it attacked his left shin. "Ow!" This one wasn't the same as the one back at Curiosity Coast. This one was definitely more lion than dog.
"Take that!" He pulled out one of his throwing cards and threw it at the monster. It flashed at its feet and gave him a chance to run away.

Having successfully escaped, Adam looked for a safe place to tend to his wounded shin. He pulled out the bandages and wrapped it up. "Ah, that's much better."

Adam had found a four-wheeler. "Oh, now, you show up! Where were you when I needed you most?" He thought it was kind of useless, since he was already within walking distance to the helipad. Still, it would be nice to be able to sit the rest of the way. So, he climbed into the driver's side of the vehicle, started it up, and drove off.
