"Into the Malro you go!" was the last thing Quan had said before temporarily bidding the teen farewell. Something about getting stronger and learning to fend for himself out in the wild in the harshest of territories. Ainsley, for one, was not pleased. The desert was hot and dry and humid, not to mention he was getting sunburned from the intense beat-down he was getting from, well.. the sun. For the first few hours he'd been meandering the dunes of the Malro Desert he kept on muttering about unfortunate circumstances and wanting to trade places with Quan, occasionally he'd go off about how he'd rather spend a week in Aisko rather than a day in the Malro. Still, despite all of his complaints, he kept on moving through the desert rather than back towards the town he and Quan first arrived in.
He was tired and was about ready to set up camp at a shelter he caught sight off a good distance off; the sun was still high in the sky but he wanted to get a drink of water and turn in for a nap. Unfortunately, as he clambered up a particularly high mound of sand, a shadow came upon him and, upon inspecting the size and shape of it, he uttered a curse under his breath just in time as the dragon landed no more than five feet from where he was. Large and golden yellow, and with matching eyes that were narrowed into near-slits, there stood before him what looked like a Kiandri dragon. At least, according to a textbook he'd read a while back.
"Well, crap," the teen started, then almost immediately turned tail. He slid down the mountain of sand just as the crackling of electricity sounded right above his head, followed by an ear-splitting roar from the dragon. So the teen ran back the way he came without much choice, at least not one he was aware of, and prayed to Serene that he'd survive his first day out in the Malro...

He couldn't have been running for more than a few minutes when he felt a bolt of lightning make contact with the sand just to his left. Ainsley's body reacted in the only way that it really could - he ran faster. The dragon continued with its chase, finding it rather easy to keep up with the boy considering it had wings. Ainsley could only dream of the day he had his fully grown set of wings like Quan's; gliding wasn't going to do him any good in this situation. He spotted a rock formation to his left and made a break for the area, winded and still gasping for air as he went. He was exhausted, to say the least, and his legs were about ready to fold right beneath him.
The blonde slid into a low-hanging shelter as soon as he made it to the rocks, trying his hardest to catch his breath while taking his axe into his hand. He couldn't run forever, he knew; he was in the desert, for goodness sake. There was basically nowhere to run, and with his luck running without direction could only mean running into more unpleasant creatures. The teen listened carefully as the dragon searched the area, sniffing and huffing and waiting...
When everything seemed to fall silent, Ainsley came up and out from where he'd been hiding only to come practically face-to-face with the beast. It seemed to smirk, then readied itself to fire off another blast of electricity. Luckily, Ainsley reacted just fast enough to duck down and deliver a blunted hit to the beast's throat before running off again. He couldn't think of a way to defeat the damned thing yet, but he knew he had to or else he'd be dead meat. Quan wasn't there to help him, which meant that for the next few days he'd be on his own.
He could hear the dragon give another ear-splitting roar behind him, then after glancing back over his shoulder he watched the creature take flight and begin the chase once more...

The teen could really only run for so long. The desert sand made running no easy task, not to mention the heat and all the dust that made it hard to see, and it was just a recipe for dying an early death. Ainsley, when he couldn't run anymore, slowed down to a stop to catch his breath; the dragon, in the meantime, almost laughed as it landed, looking over the Orderite as if he wasn't any new challenge in these parts. After taking more than a few deep breaths, Ainsley was feeling just a bit more revitalized. His lips were dry and cracked, his eyes stung and his legs were shaky, but he gripped his axe and readied himself for a fight. He couldn't run anymore - as much as his body couldn't keep going, his pride also couldn't take another hit. If these fights kept coming to him, he'd had to stand his ground and start facing them head on.
"No more running, then?" he said with almost a grin. The Kiandri snorted at that. "Okay then, dragon, here we go!"
And he made a run for the beast, who fired off another bolt of lightning his way. Ainsley did his best to dodge it with barely any luck, his arm getting a hit in the process. He felt a warm trail of blood begin to go down his arm but he kept on moving toward the Kiandri, which kept on blasting off one electric shock after the other. The teen did his best to bob and weave his way through, but his body was slowly but surely getting weaker. When he was close enough he made a fake motion to jump, which the dragon seemed to follow as it blasted off another electric shock into the sky and expected Ainsley to fall to charred pieces, but instead he slid beneath the dragon and, with his axe held up above his head, he gutted the beast.
The Kiandri let out a cry of pain and keeled over, and only minutes later the creature was reduced to almost nothing after breathing its last. The only evidence of its existence was the yellow orb that lay in the large creature's place, which Ainsley gingerly grabbed. He needed to find shelter though, so he couldn't dawdle for long. Quickly, the teen made haste toward the rocks he'd passed only minutes before. He wouldn't survive if he stayed out here without any sort of structure to keep him hidden, after all.
