He was born the youngest of six boys, and not like quiet, nerdy boys, but rough-housing, foul-mouthed, built-like-a-football-player boys. They were all good looking and athletic, and built like a house. Maybe it was because he had five brothers to compete with for food and attention, but Garland was nothing like this. He was small and scrawny, with shaggy hair that grew too fast to keep truly short, and more pretty than handsome. Wasn't it bad enough that his name was Garland, but he had to look like a girl too? He was always afraid of being teased by his older brothers. Sure, sometimes they were nice and took him to the movies or helped him with his homework, but it seemed like more often that not, their only reason for existing was to give him wedgies or use him as a human football. As a kid, this just scared him into being timid and shy, and this made him an easy target for the kids at school, who made fun of his name and called him Judy.
This was until, of course, the 9th grade, when all of a sudden he got tired of being a human punching bag. He was Garland Octavius Smoot, goddammit, he had the world's stupidest name but he was meant to be more than this, so he wasn't going to let his name hold him back! He began mimicking his brothers after this. The problem was, they were all star athletes with super hot girlfriends and promising futures. They had reason to be confident and arrogant! When Garland acted that way, well... Let's just say that it didn't make him any more popular. But he kept acting that way, because all he wanted was to be great and cool and get cute chicks, too. Well, the greatest accomplishment he's gotten was an academic award for the cooking class he took in high school for an easy elective credit, and the only chick he "got" was one of the new maids his mother hired, and only for an afternoon. But he's sure that he's doing the right thing, because he read on the internet that if you put good feelings out into the universe, you get good things back. Though sometimes his "good feelings" leaned a bit hard on the "douchebaggery" side.
He was so busy trying to put out good feelings that he didn't do well enough to go to college. Not that he particularly cared about academics, but still. He bummed around his parents' house for a year. When he was nineteen he got tired of hanging around home in his parents' basement while his older brothers got jobs and beautiful wives, so he moved away. Nirvani seemed cheap, and even better, far away, so he packed up his things and moved to the strange island. He got a job as a stablehand because he already knew how to ride, and don't cute girls like horses?
Garland's pretty unremarkable and mediocre at most things, but there are two things he's really good at: cooking and somersaults.
