After journeying all the way up to Zena, skipping the road home and going to Jahuar--yet getting sidetracked before she reached it--Winta had finally returned home, her grandmother overjoyed that she had returned without having obtained the knowledge she had wanted. It was frustrating to say the least. Her grandmother made every attempt to get her to focus her craftmaking skills on something like jewelry which was considered more "womanly" by her grandmother. Winta hadn't given in though. In fact, she was currently sitting up in the trees of Tale looking for a good branch that she could cut down and make into the most marvelous spear anyone had ever seen and put her grandmother in her place. It was worth a shot to see if she could actually pull it off or not. Winta finally gave a big grin when she found the perfect branch to make into a new and improved spear. Winta promptly picked up a saw and got to work sawing off the long and big branch that could probably provide the whole tribe with spears, but with Winta as the carver it was just going to provide her with two. "I'll show her!" She said happily to herself as the branch fell to the ground with a loud crashing noise. If the ground quaked at it's descent then surely foes would as well. Right?

Once Winta had climbed down out of the tree's, cut off the length she needed from the branch for one spear she sat down and pulled out a knife that hadn't been made for her. Which made sense because everything she made thus far had broken as soon as it was put to use. Maybe one day she'd make something that was actually usable. Hopefully this spear would be the first. It certainly had all of her hopes and dreams poured into it. Winta took in a deep breath, beginning her work on the branch as she exhaled.

Yaholo was on his way back to his settlement after spending the night in Jauhar. Although it wasn't typical for his Alkidike sisters to allow him to spend the night, it was nice when he was given the chance. Talking with them was always interesting, especially if they spoke of weapon making. He liked to listen about different techniques, how best to carve, and when to stop carving the piece to avoid breakage. Of course, he didn't exactly understand anything that was being said, he had always learned by doing, and went on his way without learning a single thing.

He found himself wandering down a path that his father had taken him on as a child, one that was known to lead to another Leaf settlement, and his attention was caught by a loud crash. "What the hell was that?!" He exclaimed, leaning away from the sound. Though visibly startled, he decided to investigate to sound, and spotted Winta sitting on the ground. He blinked and knelt down beside her.

"What are you making?" He asked.

Unfortunately, Winta had been so engulfed by her spear making that she had completely shut out the world. That was until Yaholo had popped up beside her. "WHOA!" Winta exclaimed, letting everything fall to the ground while she fell back onto her hands and held up a foot against Yaholo's chest. As if her foot could somehow conquer the world. "Wh--What?" She added, stuttering a little as her brain tried to catch up to what was happening. Then she realized the boy had asked her what she was making.

Winta lowered her foot while she leaned forward to pick up her items to once more begin carving, but she paused as she put the knife to the wood. "I'm making a spear!" Winta proclaimed enthusiastically. "Why are you going around scaring people?" She asked with all the subtlety of a Mammu found wandering the desert known as Tale.

"Naaaah!" Yaholo gasped, somehow frightened, yet again, by Winta's exclamation. He leaned back and raised an eyebrow towards her as her foot was pressed against his chest. Okay, seriously, she had to use her foot? Hopefully her foot wasn't too dirty or something. Green eyes remained perplexed as she resumed her carving, and leered back again as she practically shouted out what she was doing. Man, was today 'look like a scared dumbass day' or what?

"I was walking by and heard a loud crash!" He cried, as if she was about to thwack him with something. "Can't help simple curiosity, okay?" Slowly, he leaned in to get a look at what she was carving. "I've never done that, making a spear. Is it difficult?" The short attention span strikes again.

Winta was honestly so engrossed in her spear that she hardly even noticed the boy, let alone how badly she'd freaked him out with the things she did. "That was probably this hitting the ground." She said, tapping the side of her knife against the piece of the branch she hadn't touched. Her eyes momentarily left the task at hand and instead focused on him once more. "Yeah, it is pretty hard. This thing never comes out right." Winta said with frustration. Once again her attention was drawn back to the piece of wood that was being horribly hacked away at. Her eyes flicked to the other piece of wood, then back to her own for a moment, then back to him. A cocky grin grew on her face as the idea reeled through her head.

"Why don't you try to make one?" She asked before she began digging into a little bag and pulling out another carving knife. When she held it out for him to grab she wiggled it a little. "Let's see what kind of skills a newbie has." Winta's grin never faded. Admittedly she was just as fresh to spear making as he was, however, he didn't know that and clearly she didn't think he'd need to. At least not yet. When her spear was finished he'd probably think otherwise all on his own.

Yaholo pursed his lips a little and arched an eyebrow. Him, make a spear? He could barely carve his name into the side of a tree! Not that he was allowed to, that is, his father would probably hit him and tell him to focus on the hunt or something. After a moments' deliberation, Yaholo happily took the carving knife he had been offered and smiled. "Challenge accepted!" He said, giving the knife a little twirl.

Then, he sat for a few minutes, looking around in a perplexed manner. "Uh..." He began. "Where do I get the wood...?"

A grin once again made an appearance on her lips when the boy accepted the challenge she'd given him. "You can use this piece here. Our spears will be siblings." She said, shrugging a little before she began to hack at her own. "I'm Winta." She said smiling through her concentration. Maybe it would be fun to carve with someone else. It would be even better if she found someone who could make worse spears than her. It seemed like the only way that was going to happen was if she found a beginner. Or so it seemed to reason. She had no idea if Yaholo had some hidden talent somewhere. If he did she'd probably try to figure out how she could get it. "You just whittle it down until there is a staff."
PostPosted: Thu May 30, 2013 4:57 pm

"Okay, sure." Yaholo replied. Sibling spears, eh? Interesting. He supposed that he would have to make his spear look similar to hers, if they were to be siblings. He took his piece of wood and the carving knife before gazing upwards to Winta, smiling. "My name is Yaholo, nice to meet you." He said.

Then, he looked down at the wood before him. Whittle it down? What the hell did 'whittle' mean? Was that another term for smacking? Hm, well, if she wanted him to smack the wood, he would do just that! He raised the knife in the air and began stabbing at the wood, only to bash his hand in the process. "Ouch!" He cried. "...Am I doing this right, Winta?"

"Yaholo." Winta repeated softly to herself as if she was tasting the flavor of it. Yeah, it'd work. Her head raised in alarm when he began stabbing the wood, but she said nothing. Maybe he had a different way of doing things. Weird ways. However, when he seemed to hurt himself she stifled a laugh with a sigh, got up, walked over to him and sat down behind him. "Not in the slightest." She grinned before she put her arms around his and grabbed his hands with hers. "Let's try this." Winta said, putting her chin on his shoulder and realizing it was a little hard to see. He was a little taller than her. Darn. color=#CC0033]"So what you need to do is first put your knife at an angle sorta like this." Winta added as she moved her hand--and his--into the proper pose. "Then you gently begin to tear away the wood. Kind of like you're pealing a vegetable." That was a good example right? Regardless she waited for him to actually start doing it. "I'm not hurting your hand am I?"

Nope, of course he was doing it wrong. Yaholo had no idea what he was doing, as usual. At least he knew when to ask for help, which was the good thing, but not without a small sacrifice of his dignity. Eh, he would have to try to recapture his lost dignity by making a better spear than Winta.

"Nope, you're not hurting me." He replied, nodding along with her instructions. Carve as if he were peeling a vegetable, got it! He held to knife firmly in his grasp and began to tear at the wood as she had shown him, smiling when the wood began to peel away. "Hey, this shouldn't be too hard!" He exclaimed, smirking.

A smile made it's way to her lips when she saw that Yaholo was able to do it. "Good, looks like you're a fast learner." She said with amazement before getting up and returning to her own large branch. "Now all you got to do is carve it down until there is a spear there." Winta carved the entire length of her own branch a few times. Sure this method had proven to be the best way to get a spear to come out, but Winta had the horrible habit of making it too thin or making it just the right size and having to carve it down to a thinner shaft because she didn't quite like how it had turned out. Unless there was an actual nick in the wood then it made sense that she had to thin it down.

"It isn't! You just got to watch every thing you do. Otherwise a tiny error can cause it to turn out flimsy and unusable." Winta sighed. "I seem to make that mistake a lot, but not today!" Her confidence took a turn for the better. Maybe it was because she just wanted the chance to show off to someone for a change. Yaholo seemed interested in spear making too which actually made her happy. She found that it was hard to find others that were interested in the specifics of weapon making. "Not bad."

Sure, he was a fast learner, but was he as adept as some other boys in his tribe? Not really, Yaholo had a habit of being a klutz and always found a way to hurt himself, even if he tried really hard not to. However, today he was challenged to do something, and he had an amazing amount of focus that would typically be used for something else, like gathering food or finding a proper sleeping spot. He listened carefully to Winta's words and tried his best not to make a single error as he carved at his soon-to-be spear.

But just as he was about to raise his up for critique, his hand skidded down the length of the wood and skinned a large portion of wood off the side. This caused his to squeak, gasped and stare blankly at his "handy work." He was silent for a moment or so before closing his eyes and sighing. "Well, that could have been my hand." He said. "Close one, right...?"

Winta laughed a good hearty laugh. He had been so engrossed in his carving and just about took off his hand and she couldn't help but laugh at it. "I honestly have no idea how you still have one." She giggled out, slightly bending over as she held her stomach.

After she took a moment to calm herself she surveyed him. "I think next time I should give you a duller knife. Just to be safe." Winta grinned and shook her head. Hopefully the tension that might have developed would dissipate. "Less work you have to do now though." She said, gesturing to the piece of wood that laid before him. There was a bright side to this story at least.

Yaholo laughed nervously along with her. "I don't know how either." He said. "Guess I'm lucky..." He turned back to his carving, his face practically glowing bright red. Jeez, good work, you could have killed yourself. This is just a friendly competition, not a race. Calm the hell down, focus on what you're doing, and don't hurt yourself. He let out a sigh as he examined what he had "screwed up", and glanced to Winta as she explained that it meant less work. "Less work...?" He asked. "...I guess you're right. But I'll try not to do something stupid like that again!"

God, Yaholo was just way too adorable for his own good because Winta just couldn't help but want to tease him. It was her way of showing she liked someone. Granted she could show that in a normal way too but this was more fun. "Guess you are." Winta dismissed his comment with a shrug. Winta wasn't really one to believe in luck per say. Just happy coincidences. "Well, this is your first time carving something so you're going to get hurt a lot." She added, pointing to her arm that still had a bit of a cut underneath it from where she'd almost gouged herself to death with a carving knife. "It could be way worse." Winta grinned and waited to see how Yaholo would react. He always reacted oddly to things. It was really amusing to watch. Aw he was blushing!
