Melvin had mentioned on Twitter that he was in the infirmary; that seemed unusual for the careful Life hunter. He'd also been making a point of avoiding Jordan. As well as checking up on the guy, this would be an excellent opportunity to interrupt that pattern.

He checked in the the nurse on duty, then rapped lightly on the door she pointed him to.

Melvin was resting in bed, as usual. There was little else to do, but thanks to Rin, he had his work tablet and was writing up a rather long-winded form about artifact theories for his own personal amusement more than actually thinking that anyone in the Life department would actually read it when he sent in his project report. It was soothing at the very least, to tap away and at least have something to do. That wasn't to say he wasn't slipping in a few games that game installed on the tablet. He made a mental note that when he had money and leave, he needed to add music and more games to his tablet if he could. Hopefully no one would question why his tablet had strange markings all over it.

When he heard a tap at his door, he naturally though it was Rin coming to check up on him, and turned his head as he set the tablet down on his lab. "Come to entertain me again?" He asked.

"Well, I did bring you some books," Jordan said as he slipped into the room. He had; he set down a small stack of his own books, about half nonfiction, on the bedside table. "I came by to see how you were doing. Being stuck in here sucks."

Melvin hadn't expected Jordan to show up and was both slightly flushed to have said that to him, and to also have him here. Then again, Jordan came off as the overly caring type and seeing as Rep and Harrison brought Melvin here, word would get to him.

He eyed the stack of books, not sure if any that were brought were to his tastes considering he mainly read Sci-Fi, but smile all the same. "That's thoughtful of you. It is a bit boring, but I've been entertaining myself with work." A gloved hand gestured at the tablet sitting on his lap.

Reaching a arm back, Melvin very slowly and very carefully rose up to slightly sit, but couldn't considering he didn't like putting too much weight on his body and instead more reclined on his pillows.

"I got painfully bored last time I was stuck in here." He'd also been pretty mentally fragile then, but he wasn't about to admit that to Melvin. "What are you working on? If you don't mind me asking."

He noted Melvin's effort to sit up. "Need a hand? I could grab you another pillow."

Prolixity

"Artifact information. I'm leading the project in researching them." He stated. In fact, he was the only person in the project, but saying he lead it gave him a glimmer of self-importance that he wasn't modest enough to pass by.

At the offer for help, he stiffed. "No. That won't be needed. I'm fine." He didn't want Jordan near him as, unlike Rin, he didn't know about the procedures. Not only that, a offered pillow came with the questions of it's origins. Would Jordan take from the supply closet of freshly cleaned ones, or the nearest vacant bed regardless if he was sure if the pillow had been cleaned or not? He wasn't willing to take that risk.

"Anything interesting coming to light, or are you still collecting data?" Jordan asked, then mused, "I wonder if the information available on artifacts in Halloween differs from what we've got on hand here."

"Okay." Jordan studied Melvin for a moment, considering his usual approach to tactful questions and Melvin's expressed preference for bluntness. It was awkward enough already, he decided; attempting to make further small talk wouldn't help much if at all. "You've been avoiding me," he said.

"I have theories, but just that. Most artifacts store some form of fear like weapons while others don't seem to take away energy from their owner. I still have many more artifacts to test." He said, to which he looked at Jordan.

It grew quiet after a moment, before Jordan finally said something.

"I haven't been avoiding you. I've been busy. It's not like we talk everyday." He had been, in fact, avoiding Jordan like the plague.

"I'm making progress on tracking down the one I've been researching. Actual confirmation it exists, anyway," Jordan said. "I'll be sure to bring it by for testing once I've found it."

He gave Melvin a flat look. "Dude, I'm not stupid. Every time I've had cause to be at the labs, you're elsewhere; you haven't been in the dorm commons at all since we spoke last, and that's before your infirmary stay; and you've made a point of staying away from the times that you know I'm usually at the cafeteria."

"Did I hurt your feelings? Seems the last few times we've talked, you weren't excited to actually see me. I didn't know you would get so heartbroken just because I'm not in the same cafeteria with you at any given time." Melvin didn't want to given Jordan the credit of noticing the Lifer had made himself scarce whenever Jordan was around. The man unsettled him, and the more observant he proved himself to be, the more he wanted to keep him away.

"Is that why you're here?"

"Yes and no. I actually like talking to you when you're not being a complete a**," Jordan said, angling an eyebrow at Melvin, "so I'm partly here to see how you're doing, and partly here to ask you why you're avoiding me." He shrugged.
PostPosted: Sun May 19, 2013 10:19 am

"Likewise, Jordan. When you're not being over the top, you're not bad to talk to. That being, I've been busy. I think you're making this up all in your head. I've been sparring when I can, I've been doing my Life duties, working on my own project, and helping Rin at her greenhouse. I've been grabbing food whenever I can and not at any set schedule. If you took that as avoidance, then that's you." He wasn't about to be sorry for something he was going to tell Jordan he wasn't responsible for. The first rule of a lie was to not back down on the lie once you decided on it.

"Was there something you wanted to talk to me that I haven' been around to talk to you with or did you just miss my company? I would think with all the company at home, you wouldn't feel so neglected."

"Well, if that's the case, I'll just have to make a better effort to catch up with you from time to time," Jordan said easily. He knew that rule too; he'd just make the lie more awkward for Melvin, if that was how Melvin wanted to play it. "I thought it might be about my course of study, from the way you ran off last time, though I really didn't know what was so scary about preparing for a career in higher education. That's a relief."

"Missed your company, certainly," he smiled. "Do I really need to have a specific reason to check on a friend in the infirmary? How long are they keeping you in for, anyway?"
PostPosted: Sun May 19, 2013 10:36 am

s**t.

Melvin held his neutral expression while he wanted nothing more than to frown. "I went to college. Higher educated doesn't bug me." He stated, and then placed a hand on his midsection.

"A few more days. They want to make sure I don't start walking around and wind up passing out and going down a flight of stairs. I'll probably just push it to get to my own room instead. Sleeping here or there isn't going to be a big difference to them, and they always need the beds." There were people with worse injuries then him at any given time, and he hated being here. He wanted his own bed, with his own sheets and covers, with everything he needed organized neatly around him. This place was like an uncomfortable wool blanket he wanted to throw off.

"Yeah, makes sense. They don't put up too much of a fight once you're not in immediate danger of popping stitches or reinjuring yourself - well, you probably knew that, this is your division," Jordan nodded. "Familiar surroundings are better for your stress levels, anyway. I know I couldn't sleep too well when I was stuck in here."
