Frequently Asked QuestionsVersion 1.0 Q: What movie capturing tool should I use? A: There are two major tools that you can choose between. Either Fraps or GameCam. Fraps tends to give a little bit higher quality movies and better compability than GameCam but GameCam is more user friendly. http://www.fraps.com/http://www.planetgamecam.com/Q: Movie editing tools? Many use Windows Movie Maker 2 for the editing. Its a free program provided on the Microsoft.com website. Or if you apply all the windows updates to WinXP youll get it too. Q: How do you line up videos to music? Lots of time and effort. A good job can take anywhere from 5-10 hours. If your just playing around, I suggest using VideoMach. More on VideoMach in the guide. http://www.gromada.com/Q: Ok, I have made a movie. How do I compress it? A: VirtualDub is the program to use. It comes in the GordianKnot program pack, which has some fun things. http://gordianknot.sourceforge.net/VirtualDub: http://www.virtualdub.org/If you would like to learn more about video compression and editing, check out this site: http://www.doom9.org/

Making a Video with your PCVersion 1.0 This is not a guide to make effects (though it includes a bit of them). FRAPS The BasicsFor recording your video in game, you will need a video recorder. I recommend Fraps. Fraps is incredibly handy and easy to use even if you have never used it before. You can have the program from Frap's website: http://www.fraps.comIf you prefer a direct link, please visit: http://www2.fraps.com/FRAPS260.EXE-----------------------------The InstallationYou have the FRAPSXXX (XXX being the version number) on your hard-drive. Execute it. A full-screen window will appear giving you the 'Fraps Software License Agreement'. I suggest you to read this and make your decision to install or not. After pressing the 'I Agree' button, the installer asks you where the software should be installed. You can manually type the path on the text field or you can browse it by clicking the 'Browse...' -button. Once you are ready, please click 'Next' -button and enter (or accept the default) name of the start menu shortcut and click 'Install' -button. Now the installer will install the software to your computer (install speed may change on different computers, due to CPU and hard-drive speed). You can finish the installation by clicking 'Close' button. -----------------------------The Setting UpAfter installing the software, open it. A small, handy program will open. Move to the Movies tab and choose the folder to save the movies in. Then choose the button for start/stop recording (default: f9). Now it's the most important thing, choosing the FPS.. The better computer (basicly CPU, graphics card and memory) the higher FPS you should put, in order to make the quality look good. Choosing Full-size and/or choosing high FPS will require extremely much from your computer, so be wise in this part. Please do not ask "how much FPS I should use with this computer: xX XX XX", use your head and go try it yourself (remember, having multiple users will need more from the computer and therefore lower your FPS). -----------------------------The RecordingNow, just log onto the game (WoW for example, but Fraps works with all games) and press the video capture hotkey (default: F9) and once you are finished, press it again to stop the recording (unregistered fraps will only let you record for 30 seconds each time). Now you have a video clip and you can continue to take more of them and when you are ready you may put all the video clips together. -----------------------------The AdviceI advise that you try Fraps, and if you dont like it, another program to try is Gamecam. (http://www.planetgamecam.com/) Please make a note that if you dont like Fraps or Gamecam, your pretty screwed to find a decent recording program.

Making A Video with your PC (Continued)Version 1.0 VideoMachThe BasicsFor combining many video clips, you will always need software to do it. In this case we will use probably the most common software, Videomach. Videomach is incredibly handy and easy to use even if you have never used it before. You can get the program from VideoMach's website: http://www.gromada.com/-----------------------------The InstallationLike many other installers, this one will ask you to click 'Next' -button. Of course you can't forget the license agreement, which almost every software has. If you agree with these terms, choose the 'I accept the terms in the License Agreement' and click the 'Next' -button, otherwise click 'Cancel' -button. Now you will have to enter the path to install the software to, you can manually type the path on the text field or you can browse it by clicking the 'Browse...' -button. Once you are ready, please click 'Install' -button. Now the installer will install the software to your computer (install speed may change on different computers, due to CPU and hard-drive speed). You can finish the installation by clicking the 'Finish' -button once the installation is complete. -----------------------------The WorkNow it's the time to combine the movies together. You can easily 'drag & drop' ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_and_drop ) the movies to the first list (Video list). If you wish to have music on the movie, please 'drag & drop' the music files to the second list (Audio list). For adding effects, you must click the Video effect -> Add... and choose an effect of your choice. After having all the video clips and audio files on the lists, please click the 'Save output file' -button (the floppy disk icon). Now you are asked for the video attributes.. The most important is the Mode and the Format, for Mode you can choose 4 different things: - Video and audio - same file - Video and audio - separate files - Video only - Audio only I don't think I have to explain what they do, since you can read it above. Once choosing the mode, you need to choose the Format. Since this is a movie making guide, you should choose 'AVI, Windows audio video interleaved' and click Start (don't forget to pick the destination for the movie by clicking the 'Pick..' -button. Now you've made a 'movie'. The file is at the movie destination folder and the size of it is HUGE. If you wish to make it much, much, much smaller, you have to compress it, which is our next guide.

Making A Video with your PC (Continued)Version 1.0 VirtualDubThe BasicsFor compressing movies, you will always need software to do it. In this case we will use probably the most common software, Virtualdub. Virtualdub is incredibly handy and easy to use even if you have never used it before. You can have the program from Virtualdub's website: http://www.virtualdub.org/-----------------------------The InstallationThere is no installing setup you will only need to unpack the file from the .rar file, and it's easily done with Winrar which you can get from www.rarlabs.com or 7zip from www.7zip.org, sorry I don't have time to help you with that program. (Just install it and open the .rar file). -----------------------------The CompressionOpen the VirtualDub.exe and click File -> Open video file (or press CTRL+O). Browse your video and click Open. Now click Video -> Compression (or click CTRL+P). From now on, you just have to experiment the codecs by yourself. I can give you a hint: The higher quality and higher bitrate, the higher size will the movie be. After choosing and configuring the right codec, click the 'OK' -button and click File -> Save as avi... (or click F7). The compression make take several minutes, but the time will differ according to the resolution, length of the video, your computer's processor and other things.

Sound Packs Version 1.0
As we all know, VideoMach allows you to add music to your videos. Some good sound packs you may like will be linked here. If you like some sound packs and think they should be added here, please give me a link.
Note: Music/Sounds with words in them aren't usually that great for most movies, so please keep it just music, although minimal speech is acceptable.
Links:
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/downloads/index.html#c - This is the worldofwarcraft.com site's music section. Always good sounds here. The very bottom link is the one I mostly use
http://newgrounds.com/audio/list.php?which=genre&id=11 - Trance music. Search around for ones you like, this stuff is wonderful for your videos, and most of them loop well.
http://newgrounds.com/audio/list.php?which=genre&id=7 - Drums make wonderful beats for your videos. These are for more actiony upbeat videos.
http://newgrounds.com/audio/view.php?id=198486&sub=12922 - My personal favorite for music for your videos. Check out Double Damage, Poison, and a few of the 'Danger Ahead' ones. Wonderful stuff in there.

Sound Links Version 1.0
Using the sound packs above, I'm attempting to create a music link file for my one of my BG videos. I then thought it would be cool to show you guys some cool sound links using the files above. Mine probably suck, and I need to get more music, (most movie-makers I know have over 400 from some of those people on Newgrounds), but it'll be cool to see what I make, and what you guys come up with.
If you guys find any good things to link up with ParagonX9's 'Static Wave', tell me. I love that sound file, but hard as hell to link it to something good.

Mac Guide Version 0.1
I will not be making a Mac Guide, as I do not have a Mac, and therefore have no idea how to use one. I will be posting tidbits about what I do know, though. But this will be after I finish the PC Guide.

Heartificial Around how much ram do you need to run fraps without it lagging like crazy? 512MB is usually fine, FRAPS does kinda eat away at your processor's and video card's strength, though.
