His torch was slowly but surely dimming, so he had to stop and replenish it. Ainsley knew he had no chance of getting out of that cave alive if he had no source of light, so he took the time to ensure his safety. It gave him chills to know that he'd stormed a Bognotti nest, but at the same time a sense of satisfaction in knowing that he was brave enough to go in on his own. He had his axe, his wits, and his frustrations - he didn't need much else. When the torch was ready again, the boy pressed onward, pushing past more webs and more...well, grossness, to put it bluntly.
He came into a bigger opening in the cave some time later; it looked like a hollow of some kind, but whatever the case he sensed another Bognotti coming his way. He wasn't wrong, and soon enough he was using his axe to keep a larger-than-normal Bognotti from closing its jaws around his head. The boy hacked and slashed and hacked and slashed, and the Bognotti was injured but kept on coming after him.
"Persistent, you lot..." the boy said, beads of sweat slowly rolling down the sides of his face and neck. He ignored the pulsating coming from his scars and the numbness that was slowly setting in on his injured shoulder, and he kept fighting. So did the Bognotti, much to his surprise and annoyance. It gave him a few bites of its own, specifically on his ankle. He'd slipped and the creature took advantage of that, clamping its jaws around his foot and dragging him toward it. Big mistake, as far as Ainsley was concerned, and when he was close enough he gave a quick, strong swing of his axe upward and at the Bognotti's head, cutting it clean off.
The hair body of the spider landed with a thud on top of Ainsley, so the boy had to squiggle and squirm to regain his freedom. The torch, which he'd dropped in the distance, burned on, so he picked it up and limped and further into the cave. He was tired and injured - he actually needed to get out now...
