The business district was no place for mischief, and rightfully so. Sailor Vespa was warned to stay away from civilians, as they were considered innocents and drawing the enemy to civilians could cause a crossfire. Vespa may have been new to the war, but he respected his orders, and he obeyed them without question. After all, he was a soldier, and he was expected to obey!
So he kept off the streets and instead opted to sit it out on a rooftop downtown, just above a few businesses. He tried to keep out of sight, from either civilians or foes alike, but he kept his senses as sharp as possible. Had to be alert. He couldn't afford to be taken off guard again.
That would be bad. And Vespa didn't want another defeat on his hands. He was already ashamed to admit that he had allowed the Senshi of Gardens to get the better of him, but that wasn't completely his fault. He simply... had no control over his power. What sadist granted him such an attack that hurt him more than the enemy?
So, tonight, he was sitting on a rooftop, waiting for another chance to prove his mettle and show he wasn't a complete waste of time. All the while, unable to resist the urge to pull his hand into his own chest and marvel at the feat.
"Hand goes in, hand goes out, hand goes in, hand goes out, hand goes in..."

"...hand stays out." came a lilting voice from behind the blonde. Another corrupted sauntered up behind the new recruit, a newly-minted Super. Carnelian wore a look of concern and mild sympathy for the senshi he'd never met before. Red boots clicked along silent rooftop until he stood behind Vespa, hands in his coat pockets. "I don't believe we've met before. I'm Sailor Carnelian. And you are...?" This young man wasn't at the meeting - he would be recognized in that sort of getup, plus the visor? Never seen one like it, not on this side of the war anyway. He definitely resembled a bee or maybe a beetle? The redhead wasn't much interested in insects - they were disgusting and you had to call a professional with smelly and dangerous chemicals and have them removed. It was gross. Carnelian didn't like gross. He lightly tapped Vespa on the shoulder. There was no telling how old the blonde war, even with facial hair. He seemed young. "Definitely keep the hand-on-the-chest thing for special occasions. Believe me, it rattles the senshi and gives you time."

Vespa was still very, very new to this business, as he didn't quite feel his aura (of course, having his hand in his chest at the time was a fitting distraction). He was damn lucky that his nerves had locked up, as if he would have jolted to attention and his arm would have hit the side of his chest. He wasn't sure if there'd be a noise like in 'Operation' but he was certain that the pain would be unimaginable, and never a lover of pain, he was grateful that he had at least managed to pull his hand out without too much of a fuss.
He turned to look at Carnelian, only now feeling his presence and noting that he felt much, much stronger than himself. Which meant that this fellow was a senior ranking officer. Which meant that he was caught goofing off! And Vespa wanted to jump to his feet and salute him, but the hand to his shoulder prevented it. However, that didn't stop him from saluting from where he sat, and his shoulders were as stiff as his words.
"Sailor Vespa, Senshi of Wasps," Vespa said, then immediately added. "Sir!"
He was told to be respectful and formal with his senior officers, and dammit, Vespa was going to oblige! When Carnelian mentioned special occasions, though, he titled his head and his curiosity could not be quelled. "Um, what kind of special occasion, sir?"

Carnelian was taken aback and pulled his hand away as if Vespa was a hot stove. "Sir?" A hand anxiously went to his cheek. "...have I gotten that old? Maybe I need to borrow Euclase's wrinkle creme or something... she'd be so ashamed of me..." Another sigh from the super and Carnelian shook his head in defeat. He'd have to get some cucumbers for his eyes. They reduce those awful bags, or so people say. "Please don't call me 'sir'. It's so... militaristic. And besides, we're both senshi, right? Leave the sirs and the ma'ams to the Negaverse. Sir makes me feel about forty-five and believe me, nobody wants to feel middle-aged before their time." The sailor senshi in red decided then to take a seat next to Vespa, Senshi of Wasps. Thank goodness he was on their side - Carnelian hated wasps, bees and the like and he suspected an allergy was to blame. "As for when sticking your hand in your chest is a good idea... If you get pinned or something, threatened by a senshi of the White Moon and you can tell they're nervous, sticking your hand in there seems to rattle them. It worked on Sailor Pasiphae, for example. That distraction allowed me to get away with all my limbs intact." Carnelian stared off into the distance for a moment. Chainsaws... always the chainsaws... maybe laser."Anyway, did you awaken recently? Is anyone assisting you or are they letting you fly on your own for now?"

Vespa could tell that he had unintentionally insulted Carnelian, and he immediately bowed his head to hide his distress. He did the first thing he could think to do, and that was apologize and beg. "No, I didn't mean it like that, si-I mean, Carnelian! I was just trying to be polite! Please, don't report me to General-King Howlite!"
He had seen her once, but he heard enough about him from Mica and others that he knew he didn't want to invoke her wrath. He quivered at the mere thought of it, but it seemed that Carnelian was the merciful type, and the Senshi of Wasps was very much grateful for it. He'd never look a gift horse in the mouth or shake a hornet's nest. Of all people, he'd know better!
"I won't call you 'sir' anymore! Promise!" Vespa said with a firm nod, before sitting up on his knees and looking up at the senior ranking officer. By this time he was talking about creating a distraction, and he couldn't stop but ask aloud, "Sailor Pasiphae? Oh, I guess she's one of the White Moon senshi... uh, well, I'll consider doing that as a distraction then! If I ever need to run from a fight... w-which I don't need to! Because only cowards run away, right?"
He didn't want to come off a weak, or cowardice, or insubordinate. Carnelian seemed nice, but he never knew who would report him, or why. When asked a question, he immediately answered. "I did, Si-Sailor Carnelian. And as of right now... no. I'm sort of just... on my own. And admittedly not doing too well."

Carnelian was rather shocked at Vespa's reaction to his request of not being called sir. The young plan placed a hand on the blonde's shoulder with the express intention of calming him down. "Now why on Earth would I report you to someone? This is so minor in the grand scheme of things... Hardly worth bothering anyone about and either way, I'm not offended. So please, don't worry about it, okay?" If anyone should be called a coward, it was the senshi in red. He hated fighting more than anything else and was more than happy, usually, to allow his girlfriend--no, fiancee-- to do most of the beatdowns. He'd been trying desperately to gain more courage but it was a very slow process. Luckily he fit in well with the Infiltration branch. "Running when you know you can't win isn't cowardice, Vespa. It's smart - it's survival. You're much more useful to the Negaverse alive than you are dead, for example. They may not trust us much but why lose an ally when you don't have to, you know?" The newly-minted super chuckled for a moment, drawing one knee to his chest. "I don't like that they awaken us and just leave us to sink or swim. It seems to me like we're no better off than the damned White Moon. But anyway," Carnelian spat with a shake of his head. "Do you have somewhere to go? Euclase and I try to take care of the lost and ill begotten. Corrupted Senshi aren't liked much, near as I can tell, but she and I have an apartment. You could always come stay with us if you need to."

Vespa tilted his head, the confusion on him clear to see even though his eyes were hidden behind a bug-eyed visor. He explained himself, as he said, "But... I was told that the slightest offense would have me reported. General-Queen- I MEAN KING, King... Howlite said that she... erm, he, wouldn't tolerate insubordination of any kind. At least, I thought that's what was said... I don't really remember much except how frightening everything was. Besides, no one wants a grunt to think, right?"
Realizing he was rambling, his bit his own lip to stop himself, before forcing his attention back to Carnelian. What did he mean by 'survival'? Was the enemy of the Negaverse that dangerous? "Has any White Moon Senshi killed before? Like, a civilian, or one of us?"
He felt like an idiot. Of course they must have. This was war, and in war, people died. It was hard for Vespa to wrap his brain around it, and as much as he tried to simply shove the thoughts aside, they simply shoved right back. In response to his questions, Vespa answered truthfully, relaxing his muscles somewhat now that he felt that Carnelian was genuinely talking with him and wouldn't report him. "I have my own, but... not sure I want to go back there. Not with the family. I don't want them to get hurt, or know what I am, you know?"
He hadn't considered abandoning his family before, but when Carnelian said 'survival', thus implying that their enemy was capable, and willing, to kill... that made the Senshi of Wasps shudder.

Carnelian cast Vespa a worried glance. Poor thing was so incredibly new that people had already instilled a kind of hysteria into the blonde. The corrupted super would report people for things, certainly, but never something so minor. It just seemed ill-intentioned. Mean-spirited. "Vespa, you don't have to worry about me reporting you for," Air quotes. "The slightest offense." End air quote. Carnelian sighed. "There are far worse things to report than calling someone 'sir'. Really." Vespa's next question made his superior's shoulders slump a bit. "Honestly? Probably. I've never bore witness to it but I've heard rumors. When I was recruited, Euclase and I witnessed a White Moon senshi trying to... sexually assault a civilian." Simply reliving the memory made the redhead visibly ill. He was so very thankful he was able to awaken on the correct side of things. He didn't want to side with sexual offenders. "One named Tsui, she nearly killed me. Followed me around and assaulted me twice before letting me go. That's what I mean about survival. Some of them are very willing to kill. Too willing, if you ask me." Looking back at the blonde, Carnelian sat up slightly. "It's admirable that you don't want to get your family involved. As long as you keep your identity a secret, nothing should follow you home. But all the same, you still run the risk of them finding out. My apartment is separate from my family, thankfully. I don't want them getting involved. But like I said, we have a safe house. There are probably several safehouses across the city just for people like us."

It seemed that Carnelian's recent reassurance was finally enough to calm Vespa's nerves, and though it may have undermined his recent ordeals with being respectful and professional at all times, he couldn't help but allow his shoulders to slack as he gave a great, deep, sigh of relief. "Thank you, then... I tell you, this whole military persona is exhausting. I don't know how some people can do it all the time!"
Just because he had relaxed didn't mean that he wasn't listening to Carnelian, and just as quickly as he had relaxed was he now curling himself into a tight and twisted scrunchy of turmoil. "S-s-sexually assaulted? And someone that actively chased you down?! That... that sounds horrible!"
Nothing at all like the Senshi of Gardens that he had encountered. Perhaps Thraen had missed the memo? Or perhaps he was just naturally that kind? Or... it was all a ruse to lead him into a false sense of security! If that was the case, then he'd definitely foil that ruse!
His mind was pulled away from his recent encounter to take in Carnelian's next words, and just as quickly as his heart was red hot with anger, it was consumed with fear, and some remorse, as he sighed. "I don't want them to know what I am. People like us... Senshi that work for the Negaverse, or their officers too? Or are we not allowed to house with them?"

The corrupted senshi shrugged, brushing part of his coat with the back of his hand. "It was horrible. Witnessing that made me very thankful we were given the opportunity to make a difference. I just couldn't believe the senshi had the audacity to think they run the place. That they can do whatever they want because they have power." Vespa's next questions about the safe houses made the redhead to his attention to the blonde fully. "I imagine they'll allow anyone of Chaos to come and go as they need. That's what Euclase and I do. I've housed a few Negaverse officers, other senshi... whoever is in need, really. I'm thankful we have a little organization. We're not awakened and then left to the wolves like the White Moon senshi are. Even if we're not trusted much by the other officers, we're still better off in the long run." Casting a glance out onto the horizon of the city, Carnelian absently wondered what his fiancee was up to. Was she still dress shopping with her girlfriends? They had a wedding to plan, after all. "Just know you're not alone in this, Vespa. We're here to help you if you feel you need it. There are more like us in the organization than you think."

"Well... a lot of people get hungry when they get power, right? At least, that's how it always feels in the movies and novels," said Vespa, tugging at his long hair in hopes of hiding his nervousness from the other Senshi. What he really wanted, more than anything else, was to cut off all this extra hair, or in the very least, find a way to situate it where he wasn't going to break his neck tripping over his own hair. What a terrible time to be thinking about hair, he thought, giving it a painful tug before forcing it away with a huff. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely... or something to that effect. I don't know... just doesn't seem like a good use of their power to assault people like that."
Was that why he and his kind weren't trusted in the Negaverse? Why they weren't allowed to go to the Rift unescorted? Was this why he was to be disciplined harshly if he failed to meet expectations? Because of the White Moon Senshi? That wasn't very fair at all, he thought, but he tried not to question it with the Negaverse officers. He wouldn't dare. He was a loyal grunt and grunts didn't need to know everything.
But Carnelian... he was a grunt too, right? Surely asking him wouldn't be insubordination, right? It was worth a try- if he was willing to offer him housing, then he figured he'd be willing to answer his questions. "Carnelian... what did we do? In the past? That caused all this... why did the Negaverse feel I was worthy of their salvation, or you, when so many others aren't? I don't remember doing anything wrong, and if I don't remember what it is, how can I truly repent?"
Such questions weren't meant to come out of a soldier's mouth, but they would not be silenced. Best to ask here, than to let it slip with an officer, right?

"Yes, absolute power does corrupt absolutely. But what gets me is... why do the White Moon senshi call us corrupted when they are the ones causing the trouble. They're the ones putting people in danger and perpetuating the war that keeps tearing this city apart..." ...but then, why did they wear white and we wear black? Didn't the good guys always wear white? It was something Carnelian didn't want to think about it. He pushed it aside in his mind to focus on Vespa and his plight. Vespa was newer, less experienced. He was a bird fresh out of the nest and needed as much guidance as anyone could provide. Vespa's question was something Carnelian wasn't sure he could answer, but the redhead would certainly give it his best shot. "What did we do?" the super echoed. With a shrug of his shoulders and after a moment, continued. "...I don't know the whole story. I know the Moon Queen tried to enslave the Earth and the senshi were helping her. Something happened and the senshi must've been warring or something... because they destroyed their worlds at some point. Everything up there is dead now. And somehow, the senshi have been revived and now they're appearing on Earth. You and I were one of them, a long time ago." Carnelian shook his head. Sadly enough, the bits and pieces of the story he did know weren't connected very well in his head. "I don't know why they chose us over any of the other senshi. My guess is that it's easier to awaken a senshi into the Negaverse than to convert them but some do join us willingly. Ammolite was Sailor Lyra, for example." Leaning back, Carnelian sighed. "I'm afraid I don't know the rest."

Vespa wasn't sure what to make of his paradox. He considered the notion himself, giving his head a scratch and only after some minor consideration, he replied with a shrug of his own. "Propaganda, maybe? They try to make us look like the bad guys so they do things and blame it on us? Resort to using old fashion mindset of 'White good, black bad'? Though... in Europe, it's white cats that are feared, not black... or so I thought. Internet said so, anyway."
The internet also had trolls, so Vespa wasn't willing to bet any money on that statement. He took random info gathering sessions on the internet entirely way too seriously and even he knew it. Not that it helped here.
He listened to the better source of information, the one that came straight from the horse's mout, so to speak, and he listened to Carnelian with rapt attention. He took in his words, ate them, processed them, and then analyzed them, which probably meant he was looking like a fawning fool on the outside, but he gave the Super Senshi his full and undivided attention, never the less. Only when he had confessed that he didn't know the rest did Vespa speak up. "So... you and I, and that Ammolite... we did something in the past that we can't exactly remember, which... doesn't negate whatever we did. I guess destroying our own homeworlds and trying to take over other planets is a pretty big blotch on our record, even if we did repent."
He gave a sigh of his own, and it was heavy and filled with despair. "I guess I don't blame them for not really trusting us..."

"I guess I don't blame them for not really trusting us..." "I do." It was an admission Carnelian couldn't stop until it was too late. Such were traitorous thoughts but it was true nonetheless. "We atoned for our past sins by joining forces with the people who are working to save the planet. Shouldn't that be enough to trust us? None of us have left our forces as far as I know. Euclase and I have no intention of leaving and we've done nothing but show our loyalty again and again. But it doesn't seem to make any difference." Those facts had been staring him in the face for so long but it was only to Euclase that he could admit them. Until now. "Perhaps we did destroy our homeworlds and this one, the Earth, is the only one remaining. Taking up arms against our White Moon brethren is, to me, the utmost display of devotion and loyalty. You can't get much more loyal than that. And you and I, Vespa, we were awakened to the correct side; we didn't come here later. We were never White Moon to begin with." A sigh into the wind. "We were never traitors..." Carnelian's hand raked through his crimson hair and he shook his head. "Sorry. It's just been bothering me for a while, that's all. I didn't mean to unload on you like that."

Vespa wasn't prepared for Carnelian's confession nor the passion behind it, and he felt guilty for having opened that arc for him. But, sometimes it was good to let out such stress, and if Carnelian was worried that Vespa would try to report him for such thoughts, it was for nothing. Vespa was but a lowly grunt and there was nothing really treacherous about his outburst.
"Trust comes hard for them, I guess." Vespa said, not disagreeing with Carnelian's words but trying to think of a reason or even an excuse for why the Negaverse just didn't seem to trust them. Maybe he hadn't seen the full extent of this distrust as he was freshly new, but he wanted to think that there was justification for the Negaverse's actions and their stance. "Maybe once we help them defeat the White Moon Court, that'd be enough to prove it to them?"
He knew he sounded like a hopefully fool, but he was certain that there was a perfectly good reason. "Maybe we just need to work harder? Or start bringing in more recruits? Whatever it is, I'm willing to prove that they can trust me! That I'm worthy to be a part of the Negaverse!"
Carnelian's apology wasn't acknowledged because Vespa felt that there was no need for it. He didn't upset him and if listening to him helped his senior officer in some manner, then Vespa was willing to take it. It was what a good grunt would do!
