It had been hours since Cordelia dragged her battered and bruised self from the caves. The city of Durem had all but changed in those few hours since sunset and was no longer the friendly, vibrant town it usually was in the day. The term "the freaks only come out at night" was pretty much the norm for Durem, yet none were as strange as a Raevan. Especially one all dressed in black with really sharp appendages protruding from her back. Thus little mind was paid to her as most simply wished to avoid her altogether, thinking that at any moment she would snap and attack whomever decided to so much as breathe in her general direction. Of course none of them could ever know that she'd already snapped earlier that day.

As she floated about the streets aimlessly, the snake was completely numb to the world around her. She wasn't even hearing the insistent ringing coming from her jacket's pocket every five to seven minutes. Though she did stop briefly now when the dark skies decided to open up and release a light drizzle upon her. Delia half registered the sensation of pain as water hit her directly, tiny puffs of smoke fizzing off of her like she was a hot skillet. Cordelia's energy dropped steadily as she looked up into the rain and yet she cared not, her silver eyes lackluster and lost.

Rivener had an umbrella and wandered through Durem, wondering if he'd lost his damned marbles. Earlier that night when he'd been feeding on the few stars visible between clouds, before the rain had started, the silly twinkling bastards had all but YELLED at him.

Smoke Snake is dissipating in Durem. Find her, bottle her.

He had no doubt who "smoke snake" referred to. Cordelia. But dissipating? it certainly sounds like she was in trouble! And bottling her, he had no idea what that meant, really, but he was going to guess it basically meant he should stop her dissipating. So, get her out of trouble. He'd taken to the streets, trusting his guts to veer him down this street or that- ever since the rain had started, the Starspeak was no help at all in giving directions so he had to trust to luck. And the rain was so cold... Dells was like himself, she didn't like the cold! He needed to get to her quick.

Suddenly Rivener turned a corner and lo and behold, Cordelia was standing in the street looking up at the sky and not moving, smoke sizzling off her as the rain pattered onto her body. It shocked him. It ALWAYS shocked him when the Starspeak actually said something he could decipher and it led him to things like this.

Wordlessly, he approached until he was within reach, extending the umbrella over her. "Dells? Dells, what are you doing out here? It's cold. You're WET. ...Are you okay?" There was something in her eyes, now that he could see them, that didn't seem quite right. The Scorpion frowned in concern, moving a little closer.

Delia was thinking, more like debating, that she should probably seek shelter from the burning cold of the rain, but there was also a tiny part of her that welcomed it. She blinked when the sky suddenly vanished from view and she was no longer feeling the pain of water droplets hitting her pale skin. For a moment the basilisk thought herself dead, that was until the night Sigel's concerned face filled her vision completely.

"Riven?" she questioned quietly before her mind suddenly jolted back to normal functioning and all that had occurred to her just prior came crashing back on her tenfold. "Riven..." she said again, but this time Cordelia found herself completely overcome by her emotions and collapsed into her friend, sobbing her eyes out. So wracked with sorrow was the snake that she still hadn't realized the near constant ringing of her phone, most likely one of her guardians trying desperately to find out where she was and why she wasn't home yet.

Rivener just blinked at her as she called his name so questioningly the first time, like she'd been sleepwalking and only now realized that there was a world around her. The Scorpion watched her face go through a change from empty and gray to utterly upset, and then she was latching onto him and sobbing so hard! For a second Rivener had gasped and just stood there with arms akimbo, stunned, but a second later he was cradling her with his free arm, pulling her close (mindful of both their sharp bits of course) to wrap her in his wings. The umbrella lowered to become the cover of their coccoon, shielding them from the cold rain. She was wet and cold already and it ached where she touched Riv, but he knew she'd warm up soon enough.

"Holy hell, Dells, what-... Dells, what happened? Shhh, shh..." For the longest time he didn't do anything but caress her back and shoulders, trying to calm the poor girl down. The rain was starting to come down a little harder though, so they needed to move... A quick look around yeilded one haven: an alley covered by a fire escape someone had covered with a wood plank "floor", making themselves a rough patio. They could hide from the rain there. Rivener slowly floated them over, murmuring reassuringly throughout, and when they were finally out of the painful cold he tried his hand at speaking to the upset girl again.

"Cordelia, what happened. Your phone's ringing off the hook, do you not want to talk to them? Do you want ME to talk to them for you?" Of course, Riv's first assumption was that Cordelia's Guardians had somehow done this to her.

It was such a dirty way to cry, tears flowing down her cheeks like a river all the while a most unattractive sound escaping her lips. It was very much the way a child would cry, genuine and uninhibited. As hard as it was for her to have Rivener see her like this, so very vulnerable, it was harder still for her to stop the deluge of emotions pouring out of her. At the present, all Delia felt she could do was sob and cling to the scorpion for support.

She still wasn't fully recovered even after Riv pulled them in out of the rain. She was still crying, but at least it had downgraded in intensity and her bawling was more of a whimpering now. Cordelia was so raw that everything instantly became too overwhelming in that moment that she just furiously shook her head at the other Raevan. She really hadn't heard what he was asking, but between him talking and her finally realizing that her phone was ringing off the hook, it was just too much for her sensitive psyche then. Abruptly, the basilisk stuffed her hand into her pocket, dug around and finally withdrew the despicable contraption. The caller ID read HOME, yet that didn't mean it wasn't Ebony. Hand curled tight around the phone, Cordelia looked like she was just about to chuck the thing, yet it was also evident that there was something holding her back from doing it as well.

When the screen went black and the ringing stopped, Cordelia was very much relieved. She didn't know what to say to her guardian or even if she actually did want to hear or see the human then. All she wanted was some peace and quiet, to cry until she couldn't cry anymore. Of course she didn't get that as the phone quickly came back to life in her hands, the screen now reading EBBY in bright, bold letters. Losing it again the snake cried anew and sank to the ground, completely at a lose as to what she should do.

Rivener frowned in concern as he let Cordelia move in his arms, reaching into her pocket and fishing out the phone. He watched her reactions, but she was inscrutable. Had Ebony REALLY done something to make Dells this upset? Was that why she wasn't willing to answer the phone? Riv grit his teeth and was about to reach for the thing himself when the noise suddenly stopped. He heaved a soft sigh and hugged at Dells, opening his mouth to reassure her some more, but the damned phone started again.

This time Cordelia crumbled, and Rivener had had enough. He snarled and bent to cover her form with his own like a protective coccoon, snatched the phone out of her hand and snapped it open, pressing "talk".

"Ebony?" he said snappily, having seen her name on the screen. "Look, I found Cordelia. She's alright, but she's upset so I'm taking her to my home. She'll be safe. NOW STOP ******** CALLING." He snapped the phone closed without waiting for a response, turned the power off, and stuffed it into his pocket.

Shushing softly, the Sigel then moved very gently to pry his friend off the ground so he could start guiding her gently out of their little haven, the umbrella providing cover. Riv was sure Zul would agree to letting her stay: both Sigels loved her dearly. "Come on, Dells. Let's get you somewhere safe and dry, with no humans around. It'll be just me and you and Zul. Okay? Shhh, you're alright Dells. You're going to be alright, I got you."

She flinched when Rivener ripped the ringing beast from her grasp and stared somewhat dumbfounded as the scorpion barked into it without remorse. Delia was very much relieved though when he turned off the phone and stuffed it in his own pocket, half wondering why she hadn't just thought to do that herself.

Cordelia wasn't crying anymore when the Sigel slowly lowered himself to be on level ground with her, but there were still tears in her big, grey eyes which was evidence enough to know that it wouldn't take much to have her bawling again. That being said, when Rivener mentioned Zul and no humans, Delia just about lost it. Luckily his yelling at Ebony moments before had snapped her out of her downward spiraling mood enough to allow her only sniffling and a quick nod before she wrapped herself around one of his arms and pressed her cold face against it, eyes shut tight. Cordelia didn't want to see anymore of the world right now, she had plenty enough this night.

"Thank you..." she murmured softly into said arm before going silent once more.

Rivener gathered Cordelia close and couldn't have explained how relieved he was that she seemed to have come around enough to speak. The Sigel had a soft smile for her and he caressed her hair soothingly under the umbrella. "Don't mention it, Dells. Let me know if you need anything. Or Zul. He'd love to help too, I'm sure. Come on, let's get you somewhere nice and calm and quiet, warm and dry. You'll feel better in no time."

Riv headed into the street and very gently, very carefully drawing her towards Durem Central. There might be more people there for a while, more noise, but once they would get to the Sigel's apartment, they would find the peace and quiet inside. All in all, they had to float for about half an hour just to make it to his building, since he was moving so slow and careful with his friend on his arm.

The building was a tall one, centrally located so both he and Zul could get to their work quickly, and Riv had insisted they get something on the top floor so he could eat starlight easier. With the city lights drowning out most of the stuff, a high apartment was a necessity. It also meant that that high up, the din of the city would be muffled to near silence, and Delia could have some peace and quiet. The Scorpion punched in a number at the door and the thing buzzed him in. They passed a security station whose lone guard just gave Riv a nod, blinking at a new half-torso person but saying nothing about it. Then into the elevator they went, all the way to the top, where one of the four doors led to the two Sigels' home. There were many windows letting in the dulled evening light of the city, though the glass was streaked with rain.

"Zul? ...Ah, he's out," Riv murmured as he noted the usual quiet sign they left each other when they were out to work: an apple left on the counter. Too bad, Rivener was sure his Flower would have liked to help take care of Delia.

The Scorpion's attention could settle on Dells wholly, then. Riv turned on the lights, guided Delia to the sofa in the open-concept main room, then made her sit. "Stay right there, I'll get you a towel." Even leaving her for two heartbeats so he could rush into the bathroom and get a fluffy white towel seemed like too much, and when Riv returned with the fabric he wrapped it around the girl's shoulders carefully and began rubbing her down, floofing her hair and frowning in worry.

Maybe, if she was a little more ready after that long walk... "...You want to tell me what happened?" he asked gently. "I'll listen, Dells. I got your back no matter what. Please, tell me what's wrong."

The journey to Rivener's home was much longer than originally estimated since they were floating so slowly, thus Cordelia eventually got tired of keeping her eyes shut and actually allowed them to slip open some time during the walk. Which was good because she got to see exactly where it was they were going, which wasn't at all where she was expecting. She knew the scorpion lived in Durem, but she'd remembered a place much different than this. This place was somewhere entirely new to her. Confused, her first instinct was to be suspicious and scared of entering, but once the older Raevan assured her repeatedly it was safe, she gave in to allowing him to continue leading. Honestly, if she couldn't trust him now, one of her own kind, who would/could she trust?

After a short elevator ride up, they had arrived in the scarlet and black Sigel's apartment. It seemed he shared it with Zul since he called out for the other Raevan whom didn't seem to be present at the time. So it would just be her and Rivener for awhile at least. As much as she would appreciate seeing her warm bodied friend, just having Riven there now was enough.

Cordelia gave a tiny hiss when the lights suddenly came on and blinded her for a few seconds. On the couch where the scorpion had left her, Delia rubbed her eyes to get them to readjust quicker to the brightness of the room, and maybe to wipe off any remaining tears her cheeks held. She felt a little silly when the other came back quickly and began vigorously drying her off. It might have been an adorable scene of big brother, little sister had the general mood been more light hearted rather than gloom and doom.

After he was satisfied that Delia was no longer dripping water, Rivener left the towel to her of which she kept wrapped about herself in an attempt to keep the warmth the scorpion had just now provided her with in. There was a good moment of silence between the two of which Cordelia knew what would follow. When the question finally came, the girl sighed greatly.

Staring at the floor, Cordelia replied quietly, almost a whisper, "I know where Ebony got my soul from...I remembered..." A look of pain crossed the snake's features then, giving more weight to her words as she did remember much as she'd like not to.

Rivener left the towel on Cordelia's shoulders and turned to the nearest end table, where the remote for the electric fireplace sat. He clicked it on, hoping it would help both of them regain some much-needed heat, more so Dells than himself. She seemed to be doing better, at least, not nearly as shivery and huddled as before.

The silence dragged on, but Rivener wouldn't press again. He would let her stew if she wanted to stew, would let her think if she needed to think, though frustration and curiosity both warred for top spot in his mind. Curiosity because he wanted to know what was wrong, of course, but frustration that she wouldn't or couldn't tell him. How was he supposed to stop whatever was hurting her if she didn't tell him what it was? The Scorpion's wings kept rattling as he twitched them in impotent rage, wanting to stab whatever was causing the problem so it would stop.

After a long quiet, though, Cordelia finally spoke. Her voice, though low and whispery, was at least more coherent than the half-catatonic words she'd rattled off in the alley. Rivener blinked and tilted his head, inching closer to hear.

...Ah. She'd learned where her Soul came from? And by that look of pain across her features, it was something she would rather NOT know. Riv sighed deeply, sympathetic to some degree but never quite all the way. It had been the same when Eiry had found out HIS origin, the ghostly Raevan clutching that bottle with a tiny dead body in it for weeks. That had been creepy as hell, but it had also nearly unhinged the green Frei. Riv hadn't understood then, and he didn't understand now, either. When he'd been very young, he'd asked Aphi where Raevans came from, and he'd gotten a very straightforward and informative answer. He knew his own origin and felt no qualms about it. But then again he didn't know the details of Dells' past life, either.

"...Do you wanna talk about it?" he offered quietly, moving close again to wrap the poor girl in a tight hug. "It helps to talk, Dells. I'll listen."
PostPosted: Fri May 10, 2013 7:47 pm

Eyes closed again, Cordelia's mind flashed through everything that had happened. Honestly, where did she start? Back when she'd wake up in the middle of the night with a longing she couldn't explain? To when she was in denial of anything and would just try to pretend nothing was going on? Or back to when she would wander all over Durem just to try and figure out where it was she was suppose to go? Maybe...

Frustrated and feeling like she wanted to cry again, the Frei curled up in her friend's hug. She really did hate looking so weak in front of Rivener right then, but at the same time she was so very grateful for him and wished this feeling of being loved and protected would never stop. Of course she knew now that all good things must come to an end, whether she wanted them to or not.

Sighing again while keeping curled up in the scorpion's arms, Cordelia spoke quietly and without emotion this time, possibly trying to keep herself from going off the deep end once more. "I never told anyone, not Ebby, not Adrian, no one...about the emptiness I'd feel sometimes...in my heart. Like my soul was longing for something I couldn't explain." Once she'd gotten started it was hard to stop and the words just came gushing out one by one. "I went searching. Today I was determined to find out why I was feeling this way. This longing, it lead me to the caves and that's where..."

Delia's voice wavered for a moment, tears coming to her eyes and threatening to consume her again, but she forced them aside and continued for Rivener. "...I found it...the statue. Or, that's what I thought it was when I first saw it. But when I touched it..." The girl looked at her hands then, they were shaking from trying to keep calm, so she promptly made them fists and withdrew them from sight. "...all these memory's came rushing back to me. I wasn't just any snake, I was a basilisk." Another beat of silence while her face gave a pained frown. "And Ebony killed me."

Rivener listened very carefully, letting Cordelia get everything off her chest without interrupting. It was all a little worrisome, this emptiness Dells spoke of, but she followed it and found herself. Her old self. And she found out her own Guardian had killed her.

The pain in the girls' voice was palpable, and Rivener squeezed her gently, offering support as best he could. Wondering what he could say to make it better. Wondering if the things he could say were the right ones. Wondering if he should speak at all. In the end he focused on petting her hair, held his tongue as long as possible but couldn't stay quiet.

"Cordelia, I know it wasn't a pleasant experience, finding out like that. But you have to know that a basilisk sounds like a really dangerous thing! It was likely trying to kill Ebony, too. Maybe she did it in self-defense. Ask her. And... Look, you're not only that anymore. You're not just a basilisk. You're also something else, something amazing: You're Cordelia. It must be so horrid to remember dying, but remember that you came back to life, too. You're Cordelia! ...You're Dells. Okay?"

Ugh, he suddenly realized he'd yelled at Ebony on the phone for nothing, then. He would have to apologize to her, but for now he needed to make sure Dells didn't lose herself over this. He didn't want to lose her, didn't want her to dissipate like the stars had warned. If he wasn't careful, he feared she would go away like Gage had, like Zave did...
PostPosted: Mon May 13, 2013 7:37 pm

Honestly she probably would have preferred Riven staying silent and gently comforting her rather than the words he said next. Yes he understood the pain of being reborn as a Raevan, what knowledgeable Raevan wouldn't? But something in the way he talked made her think he didn't really remember anything about his previous life. And for that...she would be eternally envious.

Cordelia would pull out of his embrace then and just frown, shaking her obsidian head in protest. "You just...don't understand! How could you side with her?! I had a life! I had a family!" She thought about how angry Zale was when he thought she was dishonoring his mother's memory, how the young basilisks fought and how Zaki told her never to come back.

"She took all that away from me! My own kids don't even want anything to do with me now! All because of her!" Tears anew, Cordelia angrily tried to wipe them away as fast as they were dropping. Obviously not an easy task. "The worst part of it all is that she's been lying to me since day one! Never once did she tell me what I really was! Who I really was! Would you so easily push that knowledge aside if it were Aphi that had betrayed you?" She wouldn't bring up the fact that his human had indeed played some minor role in her death as well. No, she was much more furious with Ebony than the white haired chef. Aphismet would be spared the Frei's fury.

"Whoa, whoa!" Rivener protested, raising both hands to fend off the other's temper. "Dells, it's alright, I'm not saying anything! I'm not saying any of that, I'm not siding with her, I'm on your side! On your side." Though he truly did NOT understand. Though perhaps that had something to do with not being in her shoes, of course. It really seemed like those whose previous selves had possessed some kind of consciousness suffered much more from it. Riv himself had only been a mindless little critter, he'd never once been subject to old thoughts, old emotions... But here Cordelia was talking about what she USED to have, what she USED to be.

For all he knew, Raevans were NOT new things. Perhaps those with old lives just changed. And that really was a scary thought.

"Okay. Okay, I hear you. It's true that I don't really understand, Dells, I've never been through anything even close to what you're going through, but it does sound... bad. Real bad. Here, come here, I'll be here for you, I promise. Get it all out. Yell, cry, anything you need." He tried to gather her up into a hug again, petting at her hair softly.

"Bbbzzzzzt- Mister Rivener, there's some frantic lady here saying she needs to go up. Should I ring her in?" The doorman. Rivener sighed. He moved to the intercom near the entry, keeping Dells beside himself if she allowed it. Otherwise, she could wait on the sofa. He pressed the button and sighed into the speaker.

"Is it a purple-haired woman looking pretty pissed?"

"Yup," the doorman said.

The Sigel glanced over at Cordelia, raising an eyebrow. "It's up to you, Dells. You want me to keep her away?"
