”Hey, Nema, I’ve got a surprise for you,” Dhoru murmured, as he gently nudged his mate’s head with his muzzle.
The sun was high in a cloudless blue sky, and the two were basking in its warmth as they cuddled on the beach. They had almost dozed off in the peaceful heat, but Dhoru had plans. He had been gradually introducing Nema to his relatives in the moons since they had become mates, and today was the day for her to meet the royal litter. Dhoru had checked ahead of time that Ugomvi and Vodnitvar were okay with it, and when they had consented he had set up a date.
Now, the cubs were known to be more than a little rambunctious. While Dhoru was sure that Nema could handle them, he thought it better to slowly introduce her to the rowdy litter. Today, he was meant to cubsit his grand-nieces; Ugomvi needed to discuss something with Shandor and Vodnitvar was taking his sons out for some ‘male bonding’. While his nieces were no less of a pawful than his nephews, at least there was only two of them. Baby steps.
Through half-closed eyes, he had noticed Vodnitvar heading off with the boys. Instantly alert, he turned his attention to the den and noticed Ugomvi watching him. With a slight nod and a wave of her tail, she turned and headed off. It was time to go, and so Dhoru roused Nema from her near-slumber and guided her toward the den.

When Mother and Father first told them the day’s plans, Hana had to admit that she had been disgruntled. Why should the boys get to spend time with Dad while me and Vanellope are stuck in the den? But when she found out that Uncle Dhoru would be spending time with them instead, her frustrations were swept away by excitement. An excitement that only grew when Mother told them that Uncle Dhoru was bringing him mate to meet them. Hana hardly listened as Mother sternly warned them to be polite and respectful to Nema. She had heard about Nema from Uncle Dhoru and was overjoyed that she was finally getting to meet her – she needn’t be warned about what would happen if she were rude, because there was no chance she would be!
It wasn’t long before it was time for Mother and Father to leave. Father left first, with Chaska, Asker and Nicolae in tow. Then Mother stepped outside, poking her head back in a heartbeat later to tell Hana and Vanellope that Dhoru was on his way and they were to stay in the den until he arrived. Hana began to knead the ground with her forepaws in anticipation. She turned to Vanellope and softly bumped her with her shoulder. ”This is going to be so fun!”

Nema had nearly dozed off, when Dhoru abruptly called her name and nudged her on the top of the head. She'd been sleeping more at night, but still she felt the need to sleep in the daytime as well. That habit, was going to die hard. Looking up from under her eyelids, she yawned heavily in Dhoru's face and giggled innocently at his response.
"Whatizzit?" She mumbled, as she rolled off her belly and onto her back. The decision was immediately regretted of course, as the sun nearly blinded her in the eyes. She could hear snickers coming from behind her, and grumbled at her family for being so rude. As the sun's glare began to dull, Nema finally rolled back onto her belly and looked into Dhoru's eyes.
He was up to something, he always was. But what exactly was it this time? Cocking her eyebrows in suspicion, Nema propped herself on her paws and waited for her mate to answer.
---
Needless to say, Vanellope was nervous about this new encounter. She'd spent some time with her Uncle Dhoru in the past, but never as much as her sister Hana had. It sort of made her jealous, but she really wasn't the type to show off such emotions. If she let things like that drive her down, she'd never get anywhere in life. Vanellope was nearly quaking in her fur by the time her Mother stuck her nose in to tell them Dhoru was coming.
Frantically she looked down at her fur, then back up at her sister, then back down at her fur. The quaking became worse. W-what if Nema said something about her fur? What if Nema noticed how different she was. The questions kept coming, drawing more and more butterflies into her tummy. She didn't want to meet Nema, not right now. What if she didn't like her?!
The swift bump on the shoulder pulled Vanellope from her shell long enough to look at Hana once more. Hana seemed far more overjoyed than she did. Perhaps she should take a page from her book? Besides, if Hana thought it was going to fun, how could it possibly go wrong?
"Yeah! I wonder what kind of stuff we'll get to do today? I bet the boys will be soooo jealous!"
Vanellope giggled her words, trying to brighten her outlook a bit to match her sister's. As long as she stuck by Hana's side, nothing bad would happen today.

Playfully dodging Nema's questions, he led her to the den and stopped just short of the entrance. With a mischievous smirk and a wink to match, he asked, "Are you ready? Try not to be scared; stick near me and no harm will come to you." He hoped that his playful demeanor would tip her off that he was only kidding.
Just in case, he dipped inside the den before there was much time for Nema to freak. It took a few heartbeats for his eyes to adjust to the sudden decrease in light, and before they had he was ambushed. Two high-pitched squeals were the only warning he got before the small bundles of fur crashed into his chest. Reacting quickly, he put on a dramatic show of being bowled over; he dropped down and quickly wrapped his paws around his nieces as he rolled as if he'd been hit by a rhino. Coming to a stop on his side, he released the girls.
In hugely exaggerated mock pain, Dhoru looked up at Nema and gasped out, "It's too... too late for me. Run - save... your...self." He then let his body go limp and flopped his tongue out of his mouth. Closing his eyes most of the way, he watched his nieces to see what would happen.
-------
As Hana heard her uncle's voice outside the den, her excitement finally broke through her bonds of control. So, when Dhoru entered the den, she leaped up and threw herself at him with a jubilant yowl.
Even though she knew he was pretending, she purred with amusement the entire time he was rolling around with her and Vanellope pressed safely to his chest. When he came to a stop, she instantly hopped on his shoulder and grabbed his ear in her teeth.
When her uncle continued the ruse and rasped his 'last words' to Nema, Hana finally looked at her new aunt. She was very pretty, and Hana liked the star-like ornaments woven into her mane, but they were in a battle! There was no time to think about how nice she looked! Unfortunately, Hana was unsure how Nema would react to being pounced on - Mother usually forbade her from attacking new people.
Instead, she leapt from Dhoru's shoulder to land ever-so-slightly clumsily in the sand. Regaining her footing, she dropped into a crouch, with her hindquarters up in the air and waggling. She waited in this position for some sign from Nema as to how to continue the encounter.

All this secrecy was beginning to drive her mad! Add to that the fact that her family seemed to know what was going on, and you had a recipe for trouble. She had followed Dhoru to the den, all the while curious as to why she was there. She knew the den well, as Lead Mummer she was often caught in conversation with Fireheart. But to be here without a prior announcement, that was just wrong! Fireheart would surely be -
Nema's thoughts stopped in their tracks at Dhoru's words, and she skeptically raised an eyebrow at him. As she opened her mouth to question him, Dhoru disappeared into the inside of the den. He was simply gone! All that was left were giggles and loud thuds. Confused, Nema pushed her way into the den where she saw the scene unfold before her eyes.
CUBS!
The female's eyes lit up like fireworks as she watched how happy Dhoru was rolling around with the adorable balls of fluff. She was so entranced by Dhoru's happiness, she had no time to notice that it was the royal litter.
"Dhoru ... they're so ... CUTE!" Nema nearly screamed the words as her paws began to prance on the ground before her. She so wanted to jump into the fray and play with them, but at the same time these cubs didn't know her. Nor did she know them.
Nema watched with tears welling in her eyes as Dhoru playfully feigned death before the cubs. "Oh no ... what have you done to my poor Dhoru? Is he ... Is he .... " Nema gulped heavily and bent down to the two cub's level. "Is he gonna be alright?"
-----
Vanellope had stayed back at first, allowing Hana to make the first move. Hana was definitely the fighter, and Vanellope knew she'd want first dibs on their uncle. Hana had only just recently told her the tale of their recent sparring match, and how excited she was about it.
But now Hana had done her tackling, and Vanellope was ready to enter the field of battle. She was nervous at first, taking a step, then quickly backing out of it. But the calls of battle stirred inside her and she belly flopped into her Uncle's arms, giggling like a schoolgirl as she nibbled on tufts of his mane.
As Dhoru stopped moving, Vanellope's giggles washed away too. The room became silent for a moment, and from a safe distance she watched Hana approach the new female. She was tall, and very thin. But her markings were very pretty, she really liked her tail the most.
It took a while, but the female finally spoke, and with it came words Vanellope hadn't expected of herself. "No! He's dead! Haven't you ever seen a dead lion before?"
The words were meant to be playful, but between her nerves and excitement it definitely came out far more harshly than she had intended.

Hana had no time for sympathy as the lioness showed her concern for Uncle Dhoru. She had called them cute. Hana wasn't cute - she was ferocious! And scary!
"Who are you calling cute?!" she yowled. Whether or not this female was ready, she was in for it now. Hana gave a little roar and ran at Nema, flinging herself at one orange-striped foreleg. Grasping with soft paws, she - carefully - started gnawing, her little tail lashing.
Meanwhile, Dhoru's act was shattered at Vanellope's words. It was hard enough to keep it together when Hana 'viciously' attacked Nema for having the nerve to call them cute; but Vanellope's grave words were just too much.
Purrs of amusement burst from his chest, and his body shook as it was racked with laughter.
Hana stopped her assault of Nema's leg to glare at him. "Hey! You're not supposed to be laughing!"

Nema was taken aback at the dark red cub's words. Well she had thought it was obvious who she was calling cute, but if the cub really didn't know... "Well you of c-" Nema had no time to react, having put all of her attention into answering she hadn't noticed the cub attach itself to her leg. She let out a small yelp, which soon turned into a faint laugh.
Trying to stifle the laugh from the rambunctious cubbin at her feet, Nema began to whine and groan as if in pain. Gently shaking her paw to try and remove the harmful cub. With a chance look up, she noticed the darker green cubbin sitting by herself in the corner, she seemed lonely which was completely unwelcome. Looking over to hear with pleading eyes she begged the cub for help. "Please, please help me! I'm being eaten alive, and this big oaf of a male is laughing at me!" Lifting her free paw, she gently shoved Dhoru in the shoulder and whined once more.
------
Vanellope was still in her corner, unsure of whether she truly wanted to jump into the fray. She might be OK if it was just Dhoru, might. But she knew nothing about Nema, and well it bothered her. How could her Mother leave them here with this stranger? Vanellope tried to stifle a grin at Hana's quick remarks at Dhoru's laughs. If she was fussing at him, it definitely wasn't a good idea for her to be laughing.
Instead she focused her attention on Nema, the new female in the den. She seemed innocent enough, at least by Vanellope's standards. By Hana's standards, Nema had broken the cardinal rule. 'She is not cute.' Her attempts to stifle the giggles failed, and she let them all out. Watching with interest as Nema tried to shake the vicious cub from her leg.
"That's not going to work y'know. You called her cute, that means you're in a fight to the death!" Hopping up onto her feet once more, her tail swished wildly behind her. She was totally ready to jump into the action -
Until Nema called her out. Instantly she ran and hid behind Dhoru once more, her little tail shaking in fear as she did her best attempt at blending in.

Dhoru stopped laughing as Vanellope dashed behind him. He was well aware of the small cub's timid nature, and had worried that it would take her a while to warm up to Nema. Hana's boldness seemed to be helping, but Vanellope was still a little frightened at being spoken to directly.
His smile softened from mirth to affection as he turned to look down at Vanellope. "Hey there, Sweetheart," he cooed casually, using his favorite nickname for the candy-covered cub. Lowering his voice to a whisper, he added, "You know, if you help me, I think we can save Nema from that terrifying brute you call a sister. What do you say?"
-------
When Dhoru started whispering to Vanellope, Hana loosened her grip slightly and leaned closer in an attempt to overhear. A gentle shake from Nema, however, brought her right back in.
"I won't be easy to beat! I'm a patron!" she mewed proudly. In truth, she'd only had one 'training session' with Gale Claws, but that was enough to qualify in her books!
Smiling playfully, she slid from Nema's front leg and darted underneath her, latching herself instead to one of the blue-striped legs at the rear. Using three legs and a gentle mouth, she held on to and chewed the leg while using her spare paw to swat at Nema's swinging tail. Taking notice of the cuff clasped around it, she made sure to aim for the end of Nema's tail.
She didn't know the story around the cuff, but she was well aware of how much some of the pride members valued their adornments. She wouldn't want to upset Nema - and, in turn, Uncle Dhoru.

Vanellope's eyes were as wide as saucers as she shook in her fur behind her Uncle. She was grateful he was such a large fluffy lion, because without him, Nema would surely see her. As Uncle Dhoru turned and began to whisper to her, her ears perked slightly, though she remained low to the ground , prepared to bolt at any moment. His sweet nicknames and cautious words were very enticing, but Nema was also very frightening ... and different ... just like her.
Perking her ears once more, she placed a paw on her Uncle's nose and nodded energetically. "OK Uncle Dhoru!" She paused a moment, leaving her paw steady on his nose. "But ... she won't be ..." Vanellope gulped heavily and tried not to upset her Uncle. "Be mean to me will she?"
Vanellope took a quick glance at the pale lioness and tried to hide a grin. It was quite a sight to see such a large lioness getting taken down by her sister. Of course it was all in good play, but she preferred to think it wasn't.
---
"EEK! A Patron Dhoru, what am I gonna do!" Nema whined her words loudly as she giggled in enjoyment. The sheer amount of joy exuding from her heart was too much to mention. These cubs were so ADORABLE! It was taking everything in her system to not tackle the cub to the ground, and begin grooming her.
As the darker cub scrambled under her legs, Nema ducked underneath her front legs and watched her attacker's every move. "S-She's going for the tail! That's my weakness! What am I gonna do! Won't someone out there help me?" Shooting a gentle glance at the other duo, she noticed the cub seemed a bit more perky. She could also hear happy whispers coming from behind herself and Hana. Her heart spilled over with happy.
It was then that she noticed the young green cub staring her down, she decided it was best to let her come to her. Instead she focused her attention on Hana and began padding herself in circles, careful not to knock her over. But also careful to make sure she got a little dizzy.

When Vanellope agreed to try to play with Nema, Dhoru rose to his paws, but her next sentence had him torn; his heart wrenched at the little cub's fear, but he also felt close to laughing at the thought that Nema might hurt her. Or anyone. Or anything.
Bending down to touch his nose to Vanellope's ear, he whispered, "Of course she won't. Nema is as gentle as a breeze." Pulling back, he locked gazes with Vanellope for a brief moment, hoping the affection in his eyes would comfort her. Then Dhoru glanced over at the two 'battling' lionesses and grinned.
He allowed himself to get lost for a heartbeat in the joy he felt. Playing with his nieces and nephews always made his heart leap, but adding Nema to the mix made it feel like it might burst. Seeing his mate get along so well with cubs - and these cubs could be quite the handful - made his hop and delight for the future even brighter.
Dhoru pulled himself back to the present and leaned in closer to Vanellope. "So - what's the plan of attack?"
-------
Nema's yowl (Hana preferred to believe that she wasn't pretending) only enticed Hana's playful ferocity; however, hanging on became her entire focus as Nema started to spin. The lioness wasn't spinning fast, in fact she was very gentle, but without using her claws it was hard to hang on to a moving target.
She refused to use her claws - that would definitely hurt - and she was hesitant to grip tighter in case that hurt. Quickly, she hopped off of Nema's leg. Taking a brief moment to shake her head so the world would stay still, she crouched down and waggled her haunches. Pouncing, she flew forward with her paws outstretched and managed to grab Nema's tail. She only had it for a heartbeat before the lioness gently pulled it from her grasp.
With a tiny growl, she tried again, hopping around after her new aunt and trying to attack her tail from the ground.Depawsit That post made me literally laugh out loud. XD;

Vanellope gave a gentle nod to her Uncle, her gaze still transfixed on Nema. If Uncle Dhoru said she wasn't so bad, then she probably wasn't. But it still didn't help the large ball of butterflies in her belly calm down. As she watched her sister and new Aunt tackle each other, she thought back to things her Father had taught her. Things that she never really thought she was all that good at. She could see that Hana had a soft spot for Nema's tail ... tail ... tail ....
"A DECOY!" Vanellope nearly yelped the words, throwing her paws in the air and slamming them down just as quickly. "We have to trick Hana into thinking she's got Aunt Nema's tail ... then when she thinks she's got it ... we tackle her!" Nodding matter of factly she offered her Uncle a bright witty smile. "But how do we make a decoy tail?"
---
All that spinning had made Nema far more dizzy than she'd expected, and by the time she stopped, she was seeing triple! Giggling, she slowly phased out of the spinning allowing her body to sway dizzily back and forth.
"Whoa .... i'm reaaaallly dizzy!" Giggling her head off she reached a paw back to try and latch on to Hana, but failed horribly. Instead the two toppled over to the ground. She hit the ground with a soft thud and simply lie there in a fit of giggles. Trying to catch her breath before Hana began her next assault.
In the back of her head she could hear excited whispers ..
'Help is on the way!
Decoy decoy!'
Grinning from ear to ear, the lioness stretched herself out across the ground and waited for her saviors to make their move.

Dhoru smiled, secretly a little impressed at Vanellope's cleverness. While brains did run in the family, at her age most cubs were prone to suggest just the last part of the plan. For instance, most of Vanellope's siblings. This litter was full of rough-and-tumble bundles of mischief.
"Well, I've got a tail. And with all that spinning, I bet Hana will be pretty dizzy. Do you think we can trick her into going after my tail, and then you can pounce?" As an afterthought, Dhoru quickly pretended to put on a brave face and added, "You'll have to be quick though, or you'll have to save Nema and me!
-------
As Nema collapsed into a giggling lump, Hana let go of her leg and leapt back a few paces. At first, she was proud, under the impression that it was her amazing fighting skills that had brought Nema down; that quickly changed.
The moment she was forced to be still - and on her own four paws no less - the ground started to move. She had never been dizzy before. Initially she was confused, wondering why no one looked upset that the earth was swaying as violently as the ocean in a bad storm. It didn't take her long to realize that only Nema and she seemed to be experiencing the movement.
With the mystery of why solved, the next puzzle was how to continue fighting when there was multiple everythings and none of them stayed still. Determined, she dropped into a crouch. Using her tail to try and steady herself, she attempted to find Nema's tail - the real one - and focus on it.
Depawsit I couldn't think up anything more to flesh out Dhoru's part, the poor baby. XD;

A wide grin spread across the cub's face as she imagined Hana's fury at realizing her plan had been foiled. Was it worth the tackling she was going get? After thinking for a moment the cub nodded her head firmly. It was definitely worth it. "I think we can do it!" Overcome with glee at the prospect of foiling her sister's plans, Vanellope let out an gleeful cackle. This was going to be great. Quickly she stood up from her hunched position and moved into a more comfortable striking position. With one quick glance at her Uncle, she gave him a toothy smile and nodded to him with a wink. "That's our secret code. You do that to me when you're ready OK Uncle Dhoru?" She whispered the words as low as she could, though she wasn't really known for being a quiet cub, just a very shy one. ---- Her world was still spinning in circles, and boy did she love it. Just having the opportunity to spend some quality time with cubs had really lifted her spirits. But to know that soon she could experience this for herself - with children of her own? HA! The thought made her want to jump for joy, but maybe she shouldn't do that just yet. Shrugging off her dizziness, she decided to fight against it, now having the perfect plan for revenge against the rowdy ball of terror known as Hana. With a wink in Dhoru and Vanellope's direction, Nema stood on her feet though she was still a bit woozy. "Awww down for the count already? I was expecting a better fight!" Letting out a girlish giggle, she tried to hide it from the cub. From what she knew of the royal litter, the family took great pride in their fighting skills. "Well if that's really all you've got ... I guess i'm the victor!" With a bounce in her step, Nema woozily trotted over to the cub who now seemed to be regaining her own sense of balance. Just as she got close enough for the cub to pounce, a wide grin came over Nema's lips, and she tripped. Falling over and landing gently right on top of Hana.

Vanellope's conviction brought a wide grin to Dhoru's face; he nodded in agreement with the cub's 'secret code' and moved into position. For a moment, he felt slightly apprehensive - tails weren't known for being resilient, and Hana wasn't known for being gentle - but he shrugged it off. A few pricks from thorn-sharp teeth and claws were well worth Vanellope's involvement.
Crouching low so that his belly fur almost brushed the ground, he pulled himself forward in a quick hunting stalk. It didn't take long for him to reach Nema. He slid into position beside her and prepared to stick his tail out, hoping that the dizzy cub would mistake it for Nema's.
He had only just started to turn around when Nema suddenly fell. He pulled up in surprise and worry, only to relax back into laughter when he realized that it was all a joke. In his defense, a dizzy Nema was quite likely to trip.
-------
As she crouched in wait for the dizziness to ease up, Hana suddenly noticed that the Nemas were growing. Wait, no - not growing; getting closer. She quickly stood up straight and proceeded to stumble ungracefully away.
She had just made it clear of Nema when she started coming down. Unfortunately, it was the wrong Nema. As Nema 'fell', she trapped Hana's hindquarters underneath her. While the cub wasn't hurt, she was definitely stuck. Bracing herself with her hind paws, she dug her claws into the ground and pulled as hard as she could, managing to pop herself out from under Nema's gentle weight.
Picking herself up out of the sand and shaking her pelt out, she turned on Nema. "You haven't even seen the half of it!" she yowled, and leapt at the fallen Nema, rolling her over onto her back.
Hana was hardly dizzy anymore, and once she felt stable enough she grabbed hold of one of Nema's forelegs. Gnawing at it, she battered her new aunt's stomach with her hind paws - ensuring to keep her claws safely sheathed, of course.

Vanellope kept a watchful eye on her Uncle as he snuck up on the duo. Her heart was beating wildly as she anticipated his next move. Her paws were itching to jump into the fray, but she'd given her Uncle a codeword. She wasn't about to go all crazy without the signal. Father would definitely disapprove. She watched as Dhoru got into position, his tail about to become the bait for their plan. Uncle Dhoru was probably going to be hurting after this one, but he must be OK with it since he agreed to quickly. She was at the ready, her rear angled into the air, front paws crouched and prepared to spring. But then the unexpected happened, and the lumbering giant Nema took a crash dive right on top of Hana! Frantically she looked from Hana to Uncle Dhoru - should she seize the opportunity? No. The code word was what was important! Besides, it would seem Hana was already prying her way out from under Nema's weight. Relaxing a bit, Vanellope waited patiently for the code. ----- Nema let loose a rowdy laugh as she felt the cub pry herself out from under her weight. For a split second she marvelled at the girl's strength, but quickly snapped back into character. "Well how about you show me the half of it! Before I decide to call upon my super powers and take you out Missy!" Crawling back to her feet, Nema shook the few remaining bits of dizziness from her system. Lowering herself to a crouched position she grinned mischievously in Hana's direction. She was no fool, she knew Hana would outsmart her every move. But that didn't stop this game from being some of the best fun she'd had since meeting Dhoru. "Well? What are you waiting for? Make.your.move." Lowering her eyes to an evil glare, she focused all of her attention on Hana.

After allowing himself a hearty laugh, Dhoru settled back into his 'serious agent' mode. Watching Nema and Hana tussle with each other, he couldn't stop his heart from soaring; however, he knew that Vanellope still lie in wait. Her involvement was important to him on a higher level than just fun.
And so, he forced himself to stop marveling with joy and actually pay attention to the 'fight'. At the moment, the two faced each other, both prepared to pounce. With a slight tinge of worry Dhoru noticed that Hana seemed to be getting a little too worked up.
While he was sure that Nema would be able to handle the situation, he still didn't want her covered in tiny little scratch marks. And so, just as Hana was getting ready to make a move, he caught Vanellope's eyes and gave her the signal.
-------
Hana had to admit that Nema was fun. But this lioness didn't know who she was dealing with! Hana was a powerful patron, and her new aunt kept taunting her!
Hana's claws slowly slid out of their sheathes - and she didn't even realize. She wasn't angry, but she was very intent on this game and on showing Nema that she was a fierce lion!
She grinned at Nema's latest taunt, and a mischievous look took over her face. Bunching her muscles for the attack, she gathered herself together and was just about to fling herself forward when she caught movement out of the corner of her eye.
